I waited to post this as was concerned a bit by the lack of communication which I felt could have been better. I chose Tanner Motors as I recently purchased a used Volvo and had an issue needing attention. Being familiar with the Tanner name (Ray Tanner Volvo was in biz in Phoenix for many many years) I needed to find a competent shop. I was very satisfied with the repairs and the overall experience, barring the slight delay in return calls. But I recently found out that is now the "norm" for repair facilities which never existed in my days of Auto Repair. I will be a returning customer once my vehicle requires further service. My experience with Tanner Motors far exceeded my recent service at a Dodge dealer in town and my car was repaired right the first time. That is what is most important. read more

I am SO happy that I found Tanner Motors. I have a 2004 S40 with only 55K miles that had been making a terrible noise for months--sounded like the bottom was falling out! I started with my regular mechanic--nice guy and I trust him. Four different evaluations and almost $1200 in extraneous repairs later from two shops, the noise was still there and actually getting worse! The last diagnosis was that MAYBE it's my struts for another $800. Needless to say, I could not accept a maybe. FINALLY found Chris at Tanner Motors through an online search...drove all the way across town to see him and within minutes, he knew exactly what it had been all along: an engine mount. Total bill: $276. Chris was great and the price certainly seemed fair. Best of all, no noise and the car is fixed!! I love this place and will not take my Volvo anywhere else for repairs. Mr. Tanner does not shy away from helping people in their time of need. He has been very helpful to me in my time of need. Dealing with auto accident injuries and insurance agents regrading the totaling of my car was one of the most horrible experiences of my life. Mr. Tanner was kind enough to appraise my car and work with the insurance agent to make sure I received a fair appraisal. Due to that I did receive the true value for my car which was way SIGNIFICANTLY than what the insurance agent had come up with. He has been such a blessing. I did a drain and fill of transmission fluid and was concerned I had overfilled. I wasn't sure if I was reading the dipstick correctly (at the right temperature of the transmission) so I wanted someone else to confirm my suspicion. I called and was able to bring the car by shortly thereafter for a free check. Nobody tried to get me to buy any other services though I asked about having the overfill pumped out (a fair price given). In the end I decided I could handle draining out the excess fluid and was on my way. It was a pleasant experience and I'll probably be back to have some bushings pressed in eventually. read more

I, like the rest of the reviewers, want to let the Volvo-owners of the world that Tanner Motors is the BEST volvo shop I've ever been come across! The hood on my 2001 Volvo C70 would not open, so I initially took it to the dealer. They quoted me an exorbitant amount of money but could never get the hood open, so I was referred to their body shop. The body shop claimed they could not get the hood open so they suggested damaging the hood just to get inside, fix the problem, then repair the hood. Oh, for double the first quote. So I googled and found Tanner. THANK HEAVENS. I got there, and Derrick, the service advisor, was nice and thorough. After they diagnosed it, he explained what parts I needed, how much it would cost, and how long it would take. It was literally 1/4 of the price the dealer wanted me to charge (not to mention, the dealer did not itemize exactly what was needed. He gave me a quote without ever being able to open the hood). I left it there over night (waiting for the parts to arrive before they could start work). The next day I got a phone call -- my car was done! We did a walk-through when I arrived, and he showed me exactly what was done and explained how it was done. The parts worked perfectly, and they even fixed the grill that AAA broke while trying to get the hood up a week earlier. As long as I'm in the Phoenix area (I'm only here for 1 year for school) I will be a loyal customer to Tanner Motors. They will have my business AND the business of any Volvo owner I randomly meet and can convince to try Tanner Motor! lol read more

When I bought an older Volvo 240 sedan I knew I'd have to spend some money no matter where I took it to make it a reliable daily driver. Tanner motors has done a great job of getting the vehicle road worthy, safe and comfortable. Upon initial drop off of a non-running vehicle, they did a full evaluation of it and explained what the car needed to have done now to get it not just running, but up to my specific standards. They also informed me of what I would want to plan for in the future as it would eventually become necessary. The staff has been great. Always polite, helpful and informative. I was contacted as needed with updates and when I called, they answered. They've worked on the car a number of times now as I decided to repair the additional systems. Tanner came to my rescue when I needed a quick oil change before a trip. I have Mini Cooper turbo. I've heard from other Mini owners horror stories of how they took their car into a shop that did not specialize in Mini Coopers and something was missed or done improperly. All I needed was an oil change...or soI thought. I called a few places recommended by Yelp. They all were incredibly expensive. Then, I found Tanner. Chris and Derrick were beyond friendly. First, Chris knew how to spell my name correctly. A sign? Then, I had my oil changed, but something showed up on my diagnostic check. It was an item that had been replaced by the dealership where I bought my car. Apparently, it was faulty and the connection was as well. The dealership told me the "idiot light" was still on because they didn't know how to reset it. Not true! The item was still broken. Thanks Tanner for catching it. I'm coming back. read more

After trying out almost every Volvo repair shop in the Valley, I think I've found the best place to take my car, even if it takes almost an hour to get there from my home. From the minute you walk in Derrick is at the front desk and is warm and friendly. They aren't overly aggressive with treatment recommendations for your car (unlike my unpleasant experiences at the Volvo dealership) and do a good job with their repairs. Tanner Motors also give nice little thank you gifts they'll put inside your car after service, which is a nice touch. They focus on doing a job well done and good customer service at reasonable prices, so there's no shuttle taking you around if your car is being fixed, free car washes, etc. The only thing that it is inconvenient is that it's a little difficult to go anywhere entertaining if you need to get your car fixed and no one is taking you away for a couple hours, unless you walk a couple blocks to Biltmore Fashion Square or possibly another couple blocks to The Changing Hands bookstore. They do have a small waiting area with free wi-fi but the waiting area is tiny. But those are minor inconveniences since I know I am getting great service from a repair shop that I trust at reasonable prices. read more

I've brought my 2007 Volvo here for the past few years and Derrick and crew have been wonderful to work with and incredibly honest. When I recently took my Volvo to another shop that was closer to my house I knew in my gut I had made a mistake and should have taken it to tanner first. When I discovered the "other shop" lied to me about their diagnosis, I brought my car to tanner for a second opinion and to fix the problem. They not only saved me $1000, they reaffirmed my hunch that the other shop was just trying to pull a fast one on me and didn't even look at the problem to begin with. They've recently partnered with uber to give you a free ride to wherever you need to go when your car is in the shop. I brought my Volvo into Tanner based on the Yelp reviews, and I wish I never had. I brought it in for a specific issue, and instead of fixing the actual issue, they fixed two things that had nothing to do with why I brought the car in to begin with. The "email summary complete with photos" that another reviewer spoke of, is just smoke and mirrors and should be taken with a grain of salt. I was really disappointed as a new woman to Phoenix that this was my experience here. I tried to work with the owner directly after the work that was done did nothing to fix why I brought my car there to begin with and after a month of being blown off by Chris Tanner, I filed a report with BBB and suddenly Mr Tanner called the next day. Instead of listening to me, as a customer, he went around and around, blaming me for not having repairs done. When I said that I had brought it to a different Volvo repair shop and the car had been diagnosed correctly and the repair in total was going to be less the $300.00 he argued with me that there was no way I was getting an original part, even though I was looking at the part at the shop. I was really disappointed because while I like to give people the chance to make things right, this was not the case with Tanner Motors. I just wanted them to make things right and they refused to do that as well. They didn't respond to the BBB's inquiry as well, and that to me, is just the sign of bad business practice. I would avoid this place at all costs, because it will cost you an arm and a leg for repairs that don't actually need to be done. read more

Had my car towed on Wednesday night, allowing the shop to start working on it first thing Thursday morning. I had it sent there because they came highly recommended. I called early Thursday and mentioned what had happen and why I needed it serviced. I spoke to Derrick . I got no response till Friday in which got a brief explanation on what they had found. They are closed on Saturday's , so Monday I assumed they would have by than figured out my cars issue , but nothing new . Derrick mentioned that he would call me Monday before closing with more news, no call!! Tuesday I called and had gotten the same story about my car that I gotten the Friday before. They couldn't find anything new wrong with my car and wanted to keep an extra day, I declined and asked if my car was able to drive safely since they found nothing, I was assure it was ready. It was middle of the day Tuesday so I didn't have a ride so I took and uber. Picked up my car and not a block away from their shop my car did the exact same things I took it in for the previous week. They did absolutely nothing to my car In 3 days the had it, they also assured me it was ready to drive. I could have done more damage to my vehicle because they didn't have a clue what was going on with my car. I had it towed once again to BMW, they had found a solution and proper diagnosis in a matter of hours. I guess going the cheap way always catches up to you. I will never take my car there again. read more

These guys are hands down the best machanics and just darn good people i have a horror story to tell you the year before last i took my car to deer valley car care and to make a long story short they caught my car on fire didnt tell me and almost everything they did to my poor volvo has had to be redone by the boys and girls at tanner we are almost 4000 dollars into this thing with tanner but everything theyve touched works better than ive ever seen it this car has been in my family for over 10 years and its been rode hard and put away wet more than once derrick the front desk dude is awesome he has gone above and beyond to make this situation as stress free as he can hes been working his butt off to find good used parts when he has to and i just cant stress how good these guys are it might take them a couple days to fix whatever might be going on in your car but thats just because they want it to work they way its supposed to so they take the time to make sure its done right again THESE GUYS ARE AWESOME thank you Mr. Tanner for hiring only the best and holding them to the high standards that you do you are a good man and a darn good boss Thank you so much read more
