This place is pretty cool! Not much need to be said here that already haven't been said. But I came here for a date and only sat outside as it was pretty warm that day. The lighting and décor was super intimate. The built patio was very private and felt like we had a room to ourselves. I had beers and my date had cocktails. The selection of both is good and unique outside of the mainstream stuff. Ordered a side of fries as well. I came to Tanner Smiths for Easter brunch-- the restaurant was fairly empty, which was a bit surprising. The wait staff was friendly and attentive, and the chicken and waffle was perhaps the best that I've had. I could taste the sweet potato butter and habanero honey against the heat of the chicken, and the collard green waffle was moist and delicious. For my first drink I got The Winona ($16) which is their signature cocktail. It's essentially an old fashioned infused with smoke. It's injected in a small bottle and you can decide how smoky you want it to be. If you want it to be more smoky wait a little bit longer before pouring it in the glass. The bartender Claire advises me to try a little bit at a time at different points to see where I liked it. It was a really good drink and I enjoyed the smokiness of it. It's considered their signature drink so if you want to see how they make it, order it! For my second drink Claire recommended the Order No. 7 ($16) which tasted like a Manhattan. First time here and I can't wait to return. The decor and speakeasy feel was amazing. Came in during their brunch but decided to nibble on something small at the bar. On Saturdays and Sundays, they have live swing/jazz during brunch hours. This was very relaxing and reminded me of jazz brunches in New Orleans. The New York style poutine was delicious. Served in a hot skillet with a nice gravy and plenty of cheese. Delicious! But, the absolute star of my visit was their "tipsy tea". Went here for brunch with a few friends, and had no reservations. They don't accept reservations for groups smaller than 8. The place was not that busy at 11:30 am but by the time we left at 1, it was busy and there was a slight wait for seating. The staff is very attentive at Tanner Smiths and friendly too. They always checked on us every few minutes when we needed service. We did not get any cocktails and coffee/tea were the only beverage we got. For mains I got the Lamb Burger ($17) with Monterey Jack Cheese (+$1) and Sweet Potato Tots (+$4) without the burger bun and got lettuce wrap instead. The burger did taste pretty good. Came for brunch. They had a nice jazz band playing inside, but the weather was too nice not to sit outside. I ordered the avocado toast which was quite good. My friends all enjoyed their dishes too. Checkin for reservations was easy. Service was friendly but a little slow at times. The pumpernickel bread that came with the avocado toast was much better than I expected. We went to many bars & restaurants but none of them were better then Tanner Smiths, true story! We came here on our first night & made sure to go back on our last night & we were glad we did. EMMAAAAAA!!! That was our waitress, she was awesome, sweet & very attentive the kid did a great job. All the drinks & food she recommended were on point! My wife wanted to take her home to San Diego I told her "Baby she's not a puppy she's a human" she didn't care, I got a bit nervous I thought she might leave me in NY & take Emma with her... We spent more money then we plan too because Emma kept recommending great drinks & they were all worth it, she earned the good tip we gave her. And kudos to the bartenders because every drink we had was great! The lamb burger I ate was one of the best burgers I've eaten, it was orgasmic I tell you orgasmic! Great job cooks. You can eat upstairs, it's more family oriented upstairs but for us we loved the downstairs with the big bar, dim lights & candles. Visited this bar with a couple friends on a Friday night. Doesn't look like much when you pass by but it has a massive underground spot with a dedicated entrance which was extremely spacious! Cocktails were great! The Winona and The Gunshot were my favorite - can't go wrong with whiskey, maple syrup and coffee! The interesting part of the Winona was that they had it served under a glass canister to seal in smoke. Wasn't a fan of the Swan Song. Sometimes you really just need to meet someone in a central place, and I get anxious finding something decent in a touristy area. Thankfully, Tanner Smiths is a great example of a restaurant that manages to offer something special and tasty and provide a great refuge. Without reservations, I was able to walk in with a friend for brunch at 10:30 on a Sunday. By the time we left around noon, it was much more crowded. Our waitress, Anna, was bubbly and yet chill - and I loved her accent! Brunch menu is short but offers so many great options. I went for the brussels hash since I was trying to go a leeeetle bit more healthy. It was a nice combo, perhaps a little too greasy, but I'd order it again. Really nice NYC bar in midtown. Drinks are very unique, surpassing your typical cocktail selection. The smoked bourbon was exciting to see in presentation and also a blast to taste. The fruit cocktails are very strong and fruit forward, and the mules are tough for sure. I ordered in cahoots which is a lemony gin drink which was delish (not worth 17$ but whatever when in Rome) and my friend got a Moscow mule. We also go the Thai curry deviled eggs and some fried eggplant chips. I didn't try the deviled eggs but they looked yummy! The eggplant chips were amazing! A group of us came here to celebrate two of our good friends engagement celebration over champagne and live music. Tanner Smiths looks like a touristy restaurant from the outside, but as soon as you step inside your perspective would change for the good. It all went down on a winter Sunday afternoon and we were not sure if we would drink it up at the bar or grab a table. Well I was the first one to arrive and decided to order a stiff mimosa that just set the mood right. When the rest of the group showed up, we thought it would be a good idea to sit at a table right by the live band. Happy to say the wait for the table was roughly 5 minute or so. We ordered a bottle of champagne cost around $40 and asked for a few champagne glasses to toast to our friend's new chapter in life. We also thought it was a good idea to ask the band to play a song and that process was fairly easy. We collectively tip the band. It was an Irish band performing. Overall the customer service and ambiance was excellent! I'm looking forward to come again and enjoy their brunch, I heard their egg Benedict's is off the chain. read more

Tanner Smith's provided a solid brunch for us on their huge outdoor seating area, and the food was fantastic. We visited Tanner Smith's on a relatively cool weekend right before lunch, and sat outside to enjoy one of the last nice weekends in the city before it gets back to the cold. The outdoor seating is solidly constructed, well spaced out, and has lots of built in heat lamps that will provide solace should it colder than is desired. We ordered a tipsy tea, which is a cocktail served in a beautiful and ornate tea pot, which you pour over similarly ornate tea cups that hold a large sphere of ice. We got the paloma, and it was made well and tasty, and also fantastic value. For food, we ordered the double smoked cheeseburger and the New York style poutine. No regrets, at all. The burger was huge and cheesy and decadent, and absolutely everything I wanted from every bite. The poutine, which we hadn't had since moving to New York City from Canada, was ooey and gooey and so full of gravy and cheese, that it really hit the spot. Took a star off because of the service, to be frank. Our server was fine, but there are two things that stuck out, and both had to do with communication. 1) I asked to replace the fries that came with my burger with tater tots, which are the same price on the sides menu, but they weren't sure if that could be done. They said they would check, and let me know if it was possible. After a few minutes, they came back and said yes it was possible! I was pumped, until the server then casually mentioned before they left that it was $4, and I told them to put it back because I would rather have been told that before having the decision being made for me. 2) The price shown on the receipt is the "cash discount price", which sure I get, and is visible on the receipt, but our server did not bother pointing it out either when bringing the bill or picking up my credit card to process the payment. Small issues, really, and I would give a 4.5 if I could, but those two things took away from the level of service provided. Either way, would definitely come back for more drinks and food, which far exceeded expectations! read more

I've never eaten at the restaurant before so this review is for the bar: I am a huge HUGE fan of speakeasies and this is definitely one that's at the top of my list. I've visited this place on several occasions and enjoyed it every time. I've been here both on dates and with friends. They have a prohibition era type vibe, complete with artwork and awesome decor. There are seats around the bar, a few on the outer edge and plenty of standing space. What I love is the extensive signature cocktail list. Their drinks menu shows what kind of glass the drink will come in and I like that. The drinks have very creative names and I love having so many to choose from! I have been meaning to go to Tanner Smiths for a while now due to the fact I've heard such good things about their brunch. However, I haven't been able to go during mornings but was able to go with a friend on a Tuesday night which is the next best thing. My friend and I entered the restaurant around 7:30 PM. The place was pretty packed and so we waited around 20 minutes before we were given a seat. When the waitress took us to our spot we walked from the outside stairs down into the basement area. The area was definitely not as noisey as the upstairs but still high level of noise. We were seated in a large booth area that was more than enough room for two people. The area was dimly lit by candles and had a nice, romantic setting that is a great place to bring a date. The waitress came out right away to pour out our water for us and take our order. The glass was dirty so they got it switched right away. This was good example of how service was great and efficient. For our meal we got a few dishes to share: -NEW YORK STYLE POUTINE: Surprisingly yummy poutine. Though the cheese was more melted than curd-y. It was still a nice combination. The gravy was also appetizing and was a tiny bit too salty but not enough to overpower the dish. -MEDITERRANEAN MEZZE: A cute set up of grilled pita and dips. The hummus was pretty good. The white bean truffle dip was just ok. And the roasted eggplant dip was pretty good as well. -FALAFEL BUN: When I saw that the slider came in a bao bun I was kind of weirded out. And even though the falafel and sauce tasted good just did not work with the bao bun. All in all, a good experience and night. We did let her know that we were in a bit of a rush (work) and she said the food is on her way out. she was kind enough to bring me a second cocktail on the house (she didn't charge me for the 1st one either)...excellent customer service...they didn't wait for a complaint...they made things right on their own!
