This is a tiny Russian deli shop and market. Their biggest draw for us is not the occasional German tea or Milka bar. Rather, their deli counter offers many meats and cheeses that you simply can't get at the big box stores. My husband is a long-time European transplant, and is always on the hunt for meats that are more like what he grew up with. The shopkeepers barely speak any English but are friendly, and prompt. We've tried some of their cakes, too. I highly recommend you give them a try for a nice sandwich during the day and maybe sample a bit of their market offerings. I came in to get some stuff for a few dishes that I wanted to try to make at home but left feeling confused . I don't understand how the store is laid out and even though there was a good selection of items with my incapability of reading labels (not English) I had to take pictures to ensure if I was indeed buying the right thing . They have a variety of Eastern European treats and teas , plus a pharmacy section The deli counter had lots of meats and cheese but the packages sizes were too big for me to just buy out of curiosity . I eventually found out that they can slice it up for you if needed . The staff is very to the point and not very chatty . The selection is amazing and they carry a lot of my childhood staples, so I was really excited to find this place after moving to PDX. Yes, a lot of labels are not in english, yes, the employees have english as their second language. It's a store that imports authentic goods by people who actually grew up consuming these goods. If the employees are not smiling or making small talk, it's a cultural difference, not a sign of rudeness. If you're unfamiliar with stores likes this, just have an open mind and have google open on your phone to look stuff up lol, I promise you'll find some delicious stuff unlike anything you've had before. I have been shopping at the Roman Russian Deli on SE Division for years and was excited to find Tanya's because I'm in this part of Beaverton frequently. However the offerings pale in comparison. They don't offer the hot deli items like stuffed cabbage rolls or fresh pastries, blintz and blini. They do have a good selection of Eastern European pantry items - cabbage leaves, pickled veggies, sauerkraut, lots of Ajver (pepper & eggplant spread), fruit jams, and dried spaetzle and other noodles. Vast selection of black and other teas. Plus an assortment of packaged sweets and cookies and fresh breads. Also a variety of beers. For those who love pierogi and dumplings, you can buy bags of frozen or by the pound. Their deli counter has lots of meats and cheese that you can purchase and they make a few sandwiches daily, including the classic Reuben on dark rye. They had a counter with bakery cakes that were quite large and I wasn't sure how long they were sitting there so I didn't purchase a slice. If you need hard to find tea or pantry items, and deli meats and cheese it's worth a stop. Prices are definitely high. just know they don't have the prepared hot dishes. read more

I gave a 2 star review before (hopefully that shows up as well) but now I'm back to downgrade because one of the two things I managed to buy there is unusable. I bought a jar of grape leaves a few weeks ago and hadn't opened them. I just went to make some dolmas out of them and as I picked it and took off the rubber band (holding paper on the lid) the lid just came right off. I immediately realized that these weren't properly sealed. I looked and there was mold and other grossness all over. Just take a peep at the picture I just took. Selling food like this is dangerous and in my opinion someone ought to hold this place accountable. I'm a Russian speaking American. The employees are Moldovan.... AND INCREDIBLY RUDE... who put on marks only when we walked in. My wife and I went in to find some Russian and Eastern European foods that aren't available in a regular market. I spoke Russian with the employees who refused to respond....I asked where they were from thinking that maybe I was being rude presuming Russian. One girl looked at the other and said, he's just American. I let that go, browsed while several maskless (despite ordinance) Russians came in and shopped, tried meats from the deli and we stood there for 10 minutes watching these ladies help EVERYONE ELSE before deciding that was enough and walked out. Selection is piss poor, the prices are high, though some good deals to be had in the deli.....mortadella, Canadian bacon. Basically, there is a much better alternative at the intersection of Scholls Ferry and Beaverton Hillsdale. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME HERE!!!!! read more

Cakes are never fresh, they won't let you taste but have been embarrassed by their "fresh claims" to get them home for company and have they be stale and rotten. Even the canned good have three stamps of expiration dates and prices! And don't get me started on the HORRIBLE, customer service! When I'm by myself I'll play game ans pretend to speak my broken Russian, I sometimes get better service. I mainly go there though for the outstanding rye breads and the assortment of delicious beers. I've been there twice and will not return. A very sad place with potential, but the two ladies who work there have zero passion for work. Glass-jars and crates of food are on the floor. Walked into this place the other day after craving some of the awesome cuisine served at Kachka. The selection of teas was out of this world. Black currant and peach passion. It was just as good as I imagined. Grabbed some frozen potato perogis- a little bland but sour cream helped it out. The selection of cold cuts and bulk assortment of candy was very enticing- had to hold back to give me something to look forward to again. Fridge area had some "herring under a fur coat" that layered cold salad of potato, beets, pickled herring, etc. I could eat that all day at Kachka but I have to admit... the package I got was NOT good. I hate to waste... but I tossed the whole thing. We did get some fresh meat and cabbage perogies that we ate on the spot. read more

For the true Soviet era experience this place can't be beat. Moldy bread and cakes, outdated meats that they cleverly peel the "use by" dates from. Bad Russian TV shows... oh wait they didn't have many TV's in Soviet Russia.... The woman who works there is very quite attractive... but she yaks forever with the customers at the counter and it takes like 45n minutes to get out of there. I wish there were more choices.. but sometimes ya gotta have that Eastern European stuff... and waiting forever for really outdated and stale foods brings a nostalgic tear to my eye. I've bought packaged goods here before, like tea and the like. But, yeah...stay away from the baked goods. I brought home a slice of chocolate cake covered in ganache and a slice of tirimisu. The cake was MOLDY on the inside and the tirimisu was stale and tasted horrible. I'm going to attempt to get my money back tomorrow. read more

This was the best "Russian" store I ever been to so far in this area. My husband and I were shopping and we wanted to be recommended about certain kind of meat. In respond to my question, the owner of the store ELENA said she was too busy and off that day and can't help us.She was extremely rude and didn't care that we are paying customers , so we decided to spend our money elsewhere.We figured since she didn't obviously care for our business and we certainly decided she didn't deserve our business. I have walked by Tanya's European Deli many times over the years as I pass back and forth from TJ Maxx. I'm not sure why I haven't gone in and perhaps I should have paid attention to that little voice in my head. Perhaps it was the high expectations I had for the place because of the word "European" in the store title. I don't know what it was, but I wished I had paid attention to that little voice. At first, I thought maybe it was a store devoted to coffee and tea because several aisles are devoted to those two things. There are a lot of choices, but while I don't read Russian, the packaging for the tea and coffee just didn't shout "high quality." Things changed as I made my way from aisle to aisle, but it was uncomfortable to go in too deep to look at things because the aisles are narrow and the shelves over-stuffed with items. I felt like I might knock things over, sort of the "bull in the china shop" effect. About halfway through the shop, everything opens up around the deli counter, but again the deli cases were so stuffed with different meats and products that it made me uncomfortable about wanting to order a sandwich. The truly interesting items were the preserved fish and whole smoked fish. These are things dear to the Scandinavian heart of my father, and these items actually looked high quality enough that I would purchase some for him. The baked goods looked dry and listless and almost past their pull date. They are not baked on the premises, but baked and packaged elsewhere in Portland. Perhaps it would be better to seek out where these items are baked and purchased them there. While I was looking around the deli cases, I watched the young lady who was fixing the sandwiches and cashiering. She hardly spoke, never smiled, and did not look anybody in the eye, not to speak of a word of thanks. I don't think anybody has ever told her that you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. There's a dairy case in the back that did not inspire confidence in me. Sad. One feels this store is a diamond in the rough.
