Khanom Krok
Brian V.

Chiang Mai regional Thai breakfast/ brunch spot that is really popular in the Berkeley area. Came here with my parents on the weekend and as expected, there was a line. (It'a popular and the restaurant is pretty small). This place has a really cozy vibe because it kind of feels like a converted residential spot. And I'm not an architectural expert, but the windows have a Tudor style feel to them. The owner was here and she was getting people in and out as soon as she could. Everyone there was very friendly and accommodating, especially since my parents are getting a little old. We got a table inside eventually away from the draft coming from the entrance. We ordered the khanom krok to start and we ended ordering a few mains but shared everything family style. We ordered: Gaeng hung le (pork belly) Grilled pork jowl Sai oua (Thai sausage) Each of the dishes were served with a fried egg or 'lava' egg (basically soft scramble). The dishes were beautifully presented and tasted as good as they looked. There were plenty of spices, but it wasn't too hot. Just a beautiful spot with delicious food and really friendly service. I'm a huge fan.

Came here on a Sunday at around 11:30 and there was a 1 hour wait for 4 people. There is both indoor and outdoor seating with covering available. The indoor seating is limited and cozy. After we were seated the owner explained the menu to us which was helpful and gave us ideas for those with dietary restrictions. We put our order in, I decided to go with their warm milk drink and vegetarian lava eggs. The milk drink came out after a few minutes and was so warm and comforting. The food took about 30 minutes and by then we were starving. Definitely did appreciate that all food is made fresh. The flavors were delicious and the eggs had a creamy texture. We would come back but during off peak times!

Hot take: I hate brunch. When I was younger, it was an excuse to day drink and engage in debauchery. These days, no thanks to hangxity. The no day drinking aside, it often feels like I'm wasting money on mid, overpriced batched-made brunch fare that's created for content, rather than taste. OFC there are exceptions and one of them: Tanzie's. From Kin Khao (one Michelin star) alums, Tanzie's serves Chiang Mai-inspired Thai brunch crafted with locally sourced ingredients and scratch-made dishes. And, every detail is intentional, including the airy parklet with chiffon curtains and hanging plants to the thoughtfully stocked restroom, complete with 2-ply toilet paper, hand lotion, and feminine products (I know, TMI). Walk-in's only, no rezzies. Arrived 10 minutes before 8:30 am opening and was first in line. By 9:15 am, it was crowded with a wait. New prix-fixe brunch coming soon; rezzies will be accepted on Tock. F O O D * Khanom Krok: Coconut Cakes w/ yam, sweet corn and green onion ($14): https://tinyurl.com/ywbnr2vw A traditional Thai street food, the coconut cakes are freshly made and served hot with a crispy outer layer and a soft, creamy, and slightly sweet center. Think flan but not as sweet. While served as an app, I would request this as a dessert. * Moo Yang: Grilled Pork Jowl w/ local honey, crispy garlic, lava egg, brown rice ($22): https://tinyurl.com/3aw3udba The pork jowl's crispy edges were a satisfying contrast to the tender, fatty interior. A drizzle of honey added a natural sweetness that elevated the flavors. Tanzie's take on the lava egg is reminiscent of Japanese and Korean tornado eggs--fluffy, soft, and custardy. Paired with perfectly cooked brown rice, it was bomb. * Seasonal Special: Dungeness Crab w/ lava egg, white rice, nam jim talay ($40): https://tinyurl.com/4jdxhruf Simple dish done right, light and fluffy rice with distinct grains topped with the soft custardy lava egg and crowned with fresh chunks of sweet crab. The nam jim talay elevated the dish, adding a bold, sweet-sour herbaceous umami with a kiss of heat. S E R V I C E Exceptional Thai hospitality. Our server, Boom was so kind, gracious, and thoughtful...offering water to my dogs on several occasions. Each table receives a carafe of water - thank you! Positive vibes and smiles all around from other staff. Prompt food service. A M B I A B C E Cozy cottage with a small indoor dining area and a private room. There's three sidewalk tables (mostly shaded) and five tables in the parklet. Overall, Tanzie's is one of the more remarkable brunches I've had in the bay. It's clear that care goes into every dish, from thoughtfully sourced ingredients to skilled techniques and attention to detail. I get the hype and accolades.

Grilled Pork Jowl with lava egg + jasmine thai tea

Brunch!! went on a sunday around 11am-12pm? it was quite a wait even after joining the waitlist, but it was sunday brunch time, and i think there was a marathon that just ended so a lot of ppl there as well. smaller interior so my friends and I (4) shared a bigger table in a separate room with another 2 girls! it was very cute and i liked how it was a private area! we all got the pork jowl lava egg, and i got the green jasmine thai tea. both delicious!! the pork jowl was very crispy and the garlic crisps were so good. lava egg very creamy and soft and delicious. rice a little hard/dry but w the pork and egg it was fine. jasmine green thai tea super good! i love jasmine and it was pretty strong! good combo of jasmine milk tea and thai!! overall super yummy i will def come back!! hopefully at a better time with a shorter wait time tho...

This ain't your regular Thai spot with creamy/sweet curries. The food here is authentic and straight out of Chiang Mai. We came here for an early (10am) brunch to skip the lines and it was totally worth it. The staff were super friendly and had good recommendations. It's definitely more on the expensive side given the relatively small portions but I think it's still worth it if you're an adventurous eater looking for new stuff to try once in a while. We got the black cod curry and the crab omelet. The sauce that came with the crab omelet was the real star of the show and we wanted to bottle it up for home. We'll be back to try more the next time we're in the area!

Jasmine Thai Tea Chia Bowl
Esther W.

Very cute place and very popular for brunch! Had to wait on a Saturday morning for brunch at 10 AM. I frequented Tanzie's since they first opened and have always been a fan of the green Thai tea as well as the pork rice bowls. Service is also friendly and very fast. During my last visit, I had the Jasmine tea chia bowl, which was beautifully presented. I have noticed that the prices have significantly increased (understandably), so this is probably a location for a special brunch - not just your local diner vibe.

This place is jumping and packed so get your reservations in early or prepare to wait! Really wanted to try their lava crab omelet with fresh crab and that's why I came here, and it was tasty. I probably could eat three of these, no joke..portion is on the small side for a grown man, but hey, I'd come back again for this dish. 10/10 stars. Thai tea is on point. They even have the jasmine green thai tea and fresh juices. They had I think pineapple or something that day. I wanted to order almost everything. Their coconut snack appetizer was a hit. Each small coconut had a small topping like corn and was bite sized and tasted like a coconut pudding bite in top of a banana leaf. Service was friendly and top notch. I can totally see this place expanding and wish they would. Great brunch/lunch or any time meal place!

We got here and there was a line. We got seated pretty quickly. My favorite dishes were the khanom krok and crab lava eggs. I was so glad they had the crab one in season. It was delicious!! I still think about their crab lava eggs and definitely need to go back for it but I'm not sure when they have it. The Thai beignets were good too. It tasted kind of like a Chinese donut/youtiao.

Grilled Pork Jowl
Sherard C.

Amazing brunch spot tucked away in Berkeley. The menu, while simple, is mostly rice dishes, with a well-cooked protein and the signature lava eggs on top. It just works well. This just goes to show, perfecting something simple goes a long way. The grilled pork jowl was amazing and the Dungeness crab special that day, while $40, was actually worth the spend. Would highly recommend to anyone who has a knack for Asian fusion spots and isn't afraid to fill up their taste buds for brunch!

Crab special $40
Cin-Yee S.

Well worth the accolades. Came specifically for the grilled pork jowl, which is a Thai dish that is hard to find. Then was seduced by the special, a crab dish that features the lava egg over rice ($40). Pricey for the portion (see pic with spoon for scale), but satisfying and served with a delicious spicy sauce that was the star of the dish. Pork jowl was outstanding! Perfectly grilled and a must order. I'll be back for this item specifically and to try some other dishes when next in town.

We decided to come for brunch on a Friday afternoon, and it felt like the perfect time. Every time I drive by here, the place is always busy but today we got lucky! Restaurant is on the main drag, so try and get street parking if you're lucky or on a side street. When you come here you HAVE to try the beignets and coconut cakes...the flavor profiles are delicious and so unique. We also loved the lava egg with the beef and Thai chilli sauce. The food was enough to share between us both. (FYI - you have to pay for water!) Ambiance was quaint, and very home-y. Staff was prompt, made appropriate recommendations, and were friendly. I love the Brick in here and fireplace) Try and score a counter spot inside ! I'd definitely come back to try some other items on the menu!

Nam prik ong
Kayla S.

Amazing thai brunch food. I came here with a few friends for brunch on a Monday and there was a 15 minute wait. It can get busy, but the servers are kind and attentive. The interior is small but decorated with plants and there is an outdoor seating area. The food: We got the Grilled pork jowl and the Nam prik ong (skillet fried rice with ground pork). The food was so flavorful and even a little spicy. The pork was garlicky, tender, and savory. I would love to go back here again!

Grilled Pork Jowl

I just ate here today. It's the middle of the night. I live 30 minutes away. That said, I'm debating if I should drive back tomorrow to eat here again. I'm so impressed with the food here. I ordered the garlic pork jowl and I'm still thinking about it. I'm not even an egg person--I usually end up giving my eggs to whoever I'm with--but this one was delicious! It was so light and creamy, it didn't tase "eggy". I also got the jasmine chia bowl. It's very pretty and also tastes good. But the stand out was definitely the garlic pork jowl. Parking isn't the best here but it's not terrible. It's located at the corner of a neighborhood with street parking so you may just need to park farther away. The restaurant kind of reminds me of the restaurants in New York as part of the seating is in this outdoor tented area. Also there's a line so expect a bit of a wait.

I understand if they couldn't do it for whatever reason, but we were just met with so much passive aggressiveness for asking. It made the mood very unpleasant. But honestly, I find it strange as most restaurants are pretty understanding of dietary restrictions and can make modifications to cater to their many costumers. Okayyyy now let's get into it. Parking here is definitely challenging, so give yourself extra time. We came on Mother's Day with reservations at 2 PM, right before they closed for their dinner reset at 3, and we were still seated pretty quickly which I appreciated, especially with how busy it was. We sat outside on the patio and honestly it was such a nice vibe. They do have outdoor heaters if needed, but the weather was perfect that day. We did everything à la carte for a party of 7. Appetizers: Vegan Spring Rolls: 5/5 Super crispy and fresh. The chili peanut sauce was so good we kept going back for more. Crispy Pork Belly: 1/5 Way too overcooked for our liking. It came out super dry and chewy, almost like a thick pork jerky. Definitely not something we would order again. Main dishes: Panang Neua: 5/5 OMG. This was the dish I came for and it absolutely delivered. The meat literally falls off the bone and melts in your mouth. The sauce leans salty, so pairing it with the blue rice balances everything out perfectly. So rich and flavorful. Crab Fried Rice: 5/5 The large chunks of crab really made this dish stand out. It was flavorful, not dry, and not overly mushy either. Solid all around. Hat Yai Fried Chicken: 2/5 Too thin and too dry for us. I would not reorder this dish, but the roti it came with was actually really good dipped into the sauce. Beef Larb: 5/5 Wagyu beef? Say less. This dish was perfectly seasoned and packed with flavor. Straight chef's kiss. Yellow Curry: 4/5 Honestly you really can't go wrong with yellow curry here. Comforting, flavorful, and paired well with everything else we ordered. And of course we ended with the mango sticky rice to share because you simply have to. It was the mango on top to finish the meal. Overall, this Berkeley location easily gave us the best experience out of the three. Great service, beautiful patio seating, and several dishes that were genuinely memorable. We'll definitely be back for that Panang Neua alone.
