Having been in the laser cut plastic business for years now, I am no stranger to the places around the bay that sell plastic. Unbelievably rude service. Maybe I caught them at a bad day, but there were two people at the counter, no customers (I patiently browsed while they were helping (?) someone that was at the counter before me), and when I approached, I was given the "Hi, how can I get you out of my store?" tone of "can I help you". I came there with some basic research of what materials were common and what I could ask for, and the first thing I was struck by was a lack of available materials or even a catalog or specs/price list. So I figured I had to ask. I wanted some sheets of two-ply acrylic, the type used in sign-making, that reveals a high contrast color underneath the top layer when machined or etched. I'd take anything, but I'd hoped for a black-over-white (is black, reveals white). "Go look at the color wall". Well, so I did. But there's no information there... just colors. Is this a choice of what colors they'd sandwich together? Is that even a thing? I don't know, and I felt incredibly stupid. A billion shades of color and transparency when I'm just looking for black and white... Now horribly embarrassed and awkward, I eye-plead to the other guy at the counter to take over instead of Ms. Grouchy, but I go back to her and, again inconvenienced, I explain the idea in hopefully a less alien way - I even go grab a sample (at least, I thought it was, before I looked closely and saw it was a raised-print sign, not engraved) and explain it. I left with the feeling that they only serve people that have exact catalog numbers and specs out of an invisible catalog, and they won't be bothered to help anyone that doesn't know that exact thing. Needed a single piece of acrylic sheet and they are super busy with local stores modifying cash registers with acrylic panels. Was lucky to get my order in two days after emailing my request and paid over the phone with contactless pickup. Over the years I've needed this location for different projects and I'm grateful that they are here for us during the pandemic. I've always had good service one would expect from this type of business and the staff are always nice. There was a melt in the plastic, it was blatantly clear it was prior to shipping (shipping box had no corresponding). I called and spoke with a manager who refused to believe the item was defective and refused to accept the item shipped back (at my cost in original packaging to show the package was not damaged in transit) or a video to show there was no corresponding damage to package. This is not the first time that it happened to me at TAP Plastics in San Jose... It made me decide to write a review, a bad review. I came in looking for a product that I was not sure if they sell it. The front desk representative who has no idea what I need goes back to the behind the glass guy (who knows about the process that I am talking) and asks him. She comes back with an answer and it's totally not what I asked about. So, she goes back and asks him again. And it's not a full answer again. And she goes back and forth. I asked if I can talk to the guy. The answer was "no". It was annoying and disrespectful! Why doesn't the guy who knows what I am talking about comes up to me to discuss it? He may have the answer or not, or TAP may care the product or not, it doesn't matter! Just give me a minute of the time with somebody who understands what I need. It is especially rude given this store current setting: I am not allowed going inside the shop to check their products myself. Perhaps TAP Plastics became too fat making plastic screens for the businesses during pandemic so that they don't care about regular customers. I am sure not going back soon. read more

I don't normally write a review unless my service was exceptional or it was horrible. Today I'm writing this review to share with everyone my exceptional experience with this store! I had a an idea and lots of questions about plastics and when I came in the store I was greeted immediately and already had a good feeling that I was going to get the help and advice I needed. I believe it was Jeff the store manager and Joselito were their names who helped me throughout. They didn't make me feel rushed or stupid for asking so many questions. They were so friendly and helpful and I just wanted to let them know how much I appreciate them both taking their time and sharing their expertise with me! I ended buying everything I needed. Not very helpful. Spoke to a big guy with glasses at the counter ... looked like he was ready to take my order rather than answer my questions ... I asked if he sold multi tool blades .. he said no ... I've never used a multi tool ... ok so I said then I'm limited to tools you've used before then ... he said nothing ... so I said then there's nothing more I can ask you then ... that was my experience after walking around being followed by a store employee for 20 mins while waiting for the long line to die down to ask my questions. I arrived 10 minutes before closing and the closed sign was already visible. The employees inside were chatting and when I knocked on the door, I communicated that it wasn't 6pm yet. A portly bearded gentleman unlocked the door and repeated that the shop was closed & I repeated that it wasn't 6pm yet. At this point the employee asked me if I had ever been to Michaels and I communicated, no. At which point he communicated that like Michaels, Tap plastics now closes 15 minutes before the closing time listed on the door. In response I communicated if this is the case, then they should post a sign stating this closing policy change on their front door. In response the gentleman communicated that they didn't need to do this and that shutting off the closed sign should be enough and then he closed the door and locked it. Absolutely ridiculous and a notice or sign should be posted accurately stating their actual closing time which now differs from what's advertised in the front door. It's clear that Tap plastics continues to disregard its customers. In time I suspect brick & mortar shops like this will be a thing of the past; and in the case of this particular franchise, I can honestly say I won't miss them. read more

Gave me a business card for the other plastics vendor and assured me the other vendor could handle my project. Excellent service! I was helped by Nikki and she was incredibly helpful. I needed three small projects and she walked me through the options of materials and processing of different materials along with her suggestions to help me make a decision on the best material option for each of my uses. Nikki had the guys in the back produce two of my projects right away. It turned out that I messed up on giving her the correct size for one project and she promptly made another one for just a small up-charge. I have nothing but positive things to say about this place. I came in with a project in mind, and they helped me draw it up, gave me great suggestions (all of which I had already considered but we're important if I hadn't already thought of it), and cut the acrylic pieces to size in less than 10 minutes. I went home, remeasured and realized that I needed it to be a tad shorter. I went back and they adjusted the length for me in two minutes, free of charge. I assembled it back at home and the project came out just as I had envisioned - which almost never happens to me. I'll post photos of my final project as well. I went here in the early afternoon to get a plastic form made. The service is that of a car repair shop. No smiles or hellos, just "What do you wants?". As I left with my plastic form and headed out the door, I decided it would be better to check out the store. I could only hear murmurs of the lady who had helped me talking to another employee. Walking back through the store, the lady who had helped me earlier said, "Oh I'm really sorry... I didn't know you were here." She turned pale with embarrassment as if she had said something really bad behind my back. Her shift from being a totally cold salesman to an apologetic one was puzzling. I'm no psychic but I can definitely tell when something is aloof. After perusing the store a bit I left somewhat insulted. Just what did she say? It had to be about me since she said "sorry". I just went in this morning to get two acrylic short folding boards made for a Christmas present this morning. (Yes, I know, strange present, but, a certain someone has been eying the ones we've seen at stores, and thinking of pilfering one and is a little obsessed with the "perfect fold".) I walked in right after opening, told them what I wanted, he sketched it out, asked for the measurements that I wanted, wrote a few things down, and told me how much it would cost. Best thing is that it will be a quick turnaround (done before 5 tonight!) in time to give as a gift for Christmas. It was a little pricey ($36 for the two that I ordered) but the majority of it was for the labor costs; so I can't complain. Major props to Tap Plastics! read more

I rarely write reviews, but these guys need one. I am replacing an acrylic window in my boat. I had them cut the new piece to size, which means I didn't have to buy an entire 4x8 sheet. The new piece matches the dimensions precisely, I couldn't have cut it better. The piece shipped from their shop within a day or so of placing the order and they did a great job of packing the piece so that it wouldn't be damaged during shipping, but I also didn't have excess packing materials to get rid of. I will definately use them for future plastic needs. read more

I had a cracked window on a refrigerator bin. The refrigerator manufacturer would have sold me a new bin for over $100 plus shipping. I emailed Max at at the San Jose store asking if he could fabricate just the clear window that required a bend, which is tricky to do well. Max quickly answered explaining Tap doesn't offer that service, but when I responded that I'd like to order a sheet and try it myself, he had not one but two "samples" waiting for me at the store the next day cut to the right size. I purchased online 2 acrylic display cases to save time from going into the store, haha! Both pieces came with broken tops. Packaging was less than professional & I searched in the box for any missing pieces - there was none so I believe that the damaged acrylic cases was packed into the boxes that way & not damaged by delivery. I went online to request for a refund or return & there was no response within an acceptable timeframe. I had no choice by to drive out of my way to the physical store where I was greeted by Heidy Morales. She informed me that the store did not carry the item & we agreed to exchange for a different item. However, she let me know that the shipping cost was non refundable at the store & both floor managers were on breaks to verify. So I let her know that I will be visiting Yelp & that's what I do! That's when Heidy said she would call the general manager to confirm. She came back saying that the shipping cost was authorized & I choose another item to equal the shipping. She also offered me the damaged items. So all in all, it took a some time but I'm happy with the outcome & Heidy has potential to be a good employee. Conclusion, I believe in the store & its products but won't be ordering online any time soon. read more

I came here for an estimate for materials for a project and their staff is extremely helpful! Although they are pretty old school (no email, no online orders), they sure know their stuff and they are able to give a lot of tips if you come into the store and tell them what you're looking for. This is also a good shop to browse around for more project ideas, as they have many plastic items ready for sale. Tip: do not ask them if they do online orders (made that mistake once and did not get a very friendly response). read more
