Very... Meh. I just recently moved to alpine from going back and forth between LA and San Diego, so maybe I just have higher expectations for my Mexican food. The customer service is great, the guy at the register was very nice and my order didn't take long at all. The salsas are AMAZING I was impressed with all of them. But I wasn't really stunned by anything I got and most of it ended up in the trash. the horchata was bitter and had almost a stinging aftertaste (SUPER cinnamon heavy and not enough milk) also came out of a soda fountain so I doubt it's made in house, the "guacamole" was literally just a blended avocado that resembled watery wasabi in the corner of my plate, the beans were bland, the rice was bland, carnitas were overwhelmingly salty and still nothing had any real flavor it was all bland or disappointing. I came here for a quick breakfast burrito once as I was passing through alpine. Alpine isn't really the type of town I expect to find true socal Mexican food, but the burrito was perfect. So I thought I would try it again since I live in Boulevard and alpine is easier to stop in than messing around anywhere deeper into San Diego area. I got the carne asada, and although this "good standard" (for my testing of Mexican food anyways) was not my all time favorite, it is a step above the average spot. So we went with some friends last night and had a Diablo shrimp burrito and a surf&turf burrito. Both were excellent. The prices here are still a little cheaper than other places too. Great spot. Definitely top 10 for me. Only downside is that the bathroom was kindof gross and smelled real bad and this is right next to the tiny sitting area inside. i give it 4 stars because my husband LOVES their machaca burrito. Says its the best he's ever had. unfortunately i can't rave about the food i had. Rolled taco's were teeny and overcooked. the Quesadilla, while the flavor was good, was super greasy. As was the beef taco. the meat was some sort of pressed meat that did not taste good at all. people inside are super friendly. Place is neat and clean. I have had there breakfast burritos, nachos supreme, carne asada burrito & rolled tacos with American guacamole. Along with Jamaica to drink. Poor service. Usually good food. With so many choices in Mexican food, why go here where they are rude and don't care about your time. They would rather have fun behind the counter while you are waiting 20 minutes for a bean burrito and some rolled tacos, which they mistakenly try to serve to two other people. We love this place. We have made it our new stop on the way to and from the desert. We love the enchiladas and the flautas. The kids are addicted to the carne fries. Swapped it up and tried the machaca burrito. It was ok. Probably will stick with my flautas like I normally do next time. read more

This little taco shop is great. They have very reasonable prices and it tastes good! There are other places you can choose to go to in Alpine to get some fast mexican food- but Tapatios is the best. The staff is friendly, and the carne asada is great. Also great salsa bar- believe them when they say the habanero one is HOT. Only downside is you usually have to park up or down the street due to limited spaces and it being so close to Alpine brewing. read more

The food channel has a program titled "The Best Thing I Ever Ate". Tapatios has an item on their menu that qualifies for me as one of the best things I've ever eaten. Out of the dozen or so mexican restaurants in Alpine, Tapatios is probably the best which isnt saying alot because for some reason Alpine has some of the worst mexican food in the county. I think Ive only eaten at Tapatios three times over the last few years that they have been in Alpine due to the fact that their lettuce is always very wet and causes the tacos to fall apart as you eat them and turns my tostada into a soggie mess before I can finish it. After experiencing this every time that I have eaten there tells me that it is obvious that they rinse their lettuce after cutting it and they are failing to take the time to drain it properly which takes a couple of steps. Hopefully they will change this practice as their food is tastie and pretty darn good overall. read more

We've been here three times now and I can give this place a solid 4 stars. The service is fast and friendly. Their breakfast burritos are big and delicious and I LOVE the tortillas they use. I've had the carne asada nachos too which were ok. I didn't realize they put both nacho and shredded cheese on them. I prefer all shredded cheese as the nacho cheese made the chips on the bottom soggy. The potions are HUGE too. My husband is a big fan of their California burrito. We both also enjoyed the rolled tacos. They aren't shredded beef though.. I believe they're ground beef. I forgot to ask the last time we were there. They also offer both Mexican and American guacamole which is awesome as I love Mexican guac and my husband prefers American so... bonus! They have EXCELLENT salsa (a bit in the hotter side) and offer complimentary chips while you wait. This place is VERY small inside. They only have 3 tables that each seat 4, however, we've been very fortunate each time and got a table. read more

Honestly, these are the best tacos I have had in my life. Yes, I am from the East Coast but I have spent a good amount of time eating Mexican food in SoCal. It is always a good sign when the cook isn't speaking in English. Service was fast and food was super fresh. I had the taco al pastor and also a carnitas. My dad had a carnitas and a fish taco, He was super duper impressed with the quality and size of the fish. My favorite was the pastor. Try the hard shell- they are so good. Right out of the fryer!
