stopped in after hiking in cuyamacs. didn't know what to expect as we pulled in. went in and looked at menu. decided to get a plate. 2 beef tacos with rice and beans. food came quick. food was good. red sauce was good but not too hot. my friend got 3 rolled tacos. shredded beef inside and a bean and cheese burrito he said they were pretty good. overall good food. inside had 3 tables. not too big but enough. we ate inside and person working came and picked up our plates from the table. overall a decent experience. Not sure why they have three and a half Stars although the food is really good and the salsa if you like it spicy it is delicious. I love the way they put all this cheese on the real tacos and I'll definitely be back for more and try some more different items. Good job guys read more

Got my order wrong, charges me $62 for two burritos and two crane asada fries. The prices on the internet were wrong, then the prices on the board at the shop were wrong too. One burrito was too much salt, the fries had no salt at all. Fish burrito was soggy not cooked all the way. I didn't see them wash hands handling food and money. I had two people in front of me order. Never used the cash register. When it was my turn, got charged the $62 dollars, I said that was wrong. Just stared at me. We went to Diego's today the menu board didn't have prices displayed at all. My friend ordered a carne asada burrito which they forgot to add sour creme and cheese, just a crappy burrito that had meat, lettuce & tomatos, we paid Xtra for sour creme and cheese but paying 15.00$ for that burrito was a huge mistake. My 5 rolled tacos cost 9.50 they were ok. Our check was 26.45 for that junk. Never ever go there bet your ass I never will. They forgot the hot sauce too. Spread the word. Diego's Taco Shop is an unassuming little taco shop attached to a Shell Gas Station. It is off Exit 30 on Alpine Road. You would never know from the outside, just how good the food is. We actually stopped to get gas and I wandered through the Shell convenience store to see what we could get for lunch. I didn't see anything that caught my eye so went through the plastic partition to go into the taco shop. We decided to try it. My husband selected a carnitas burrito and I had the tacos. The burrito was HUGE! It was two meals. We both thought the burrito was the better than the tacos. We have also tried the pork adobado burrito. Hubs thought it was really good, me-just pretty good. Next, I will try the machaca burrito. Or the Beef Res. They have so many items that we can't wait to try. And we will stop again the next time we drive in that direction. This could have been a good breakfast burrito but unfortunately is was filled with mostly unseasoned potato. They could have cut back on that and added more egg and sausage to balance out the overall flavor. Their red and green sauces were both very good and the service was friendly enough. I know a good burrito when I taste one...I grew up in the 90's when carne asada burritos were a pound each and only $3.25. That being said this place has some very good burritos. Good variety of flavors and meats. Yes they do add lettuce to their Carne Asada burrito (a little odd) but once I had it, it was bomb. The rolled tacos are excellent and the price is right. There's just rolled tacos, but I do like my rolled tacos to have a good amount of tender shredded meat, tasty guacamole, and a good hot sauce to accompany them. The ones I experience from this little taco shop adjacent to the Shell Gas and Mini Marker, were decent but needed a little help. At four dollars, you get three rather skinny crispy rolled tacos. They were skinny and came with very little slightly overdone shredded beef. More meat would of been good because it tasted pretty good. The guacamole that came on top was okay, but it really needed some seasoning because it was bland. The rolled tacos came with a good amount of white and yellow cheese which tasted okay, but is quality was suspect given it had a dry texture. The corn tortilla used in the rolls were a little overdone. The hot sauces were okay. There flavor was mild with some sourness to both the red and the green. Both had a mild heat level and in the end, they did not add much to the quality of the rolled tacos. read more

Helpful staff and great tasting food. Don't worry about the fact that it is in a gas station, this place makes really good tasting Mexican food. My kids love their bean and cheese burritos and French fries. I'm a big fan of their carne asada burrito and their carne asada fries. My only complaint about the burrito is that the cheese is rarely melted when you ask them to add cheese. My wife really enjoyed their shrimp quesadilla. Don't go into this place expecting anything fancy as far as ambiance, but as a kid, we always found the best food at the dive shops, so enjoy. read more

The best Mexican. Food in Alpine! I go out of my way to come here. The taste is great and the guys are fabulous. At one point my friend forgot her wallet and since we only get 30 minutes for lunch she couldn't go back for it. They let her have her food anyway. The first time I ate there was 2 weeks ago, being enticed by the "Taco Tuesday" banner for 99 cents each. I order 3 tacos and am told the price has gone up to $1.49 each, which I accepted. Their drink machine was down, so they were selling 12 ounce cans for $2.85. (There is a gas station attached to the restaurant where I was able to get a 24 ounce drink for $1.29.) Today, I went back and the banner for 99 cent tacos was still up. I ordered 3 tacos again, telling the cashier that I know the price is really $1.49. He tells me the deal is no longer valid, but he can't take down the sign because he doesn't have a tall enough ladder. The price per taco is now $2.89 each. WHAT A BLATANT DISPLAY OF FALSE ADVERTISING!!! I will NEVER go back there again!!! You shouldn't either!!! Don't waste the trip!!! read more

This spot became my go to taco shop in alpine due to being the only drive through taco shop nearby. Food was decent but not great. It always takes 10min to receive my food even when I'm the only person there. The problem is I can't trust them anymore! I found a wire twist tie in my burrito when I was chewing on it. Look at the picture attached. I went back and asked for a refund and the guy didn't have much remorse. Gave me my cash and I walked away. I should have counted it because he shorted me $5. The best thing I can say about this divey little joint? Boy, oh boy, they have some excellent customer service and the young dude that has helped me the last couple of times was very friendly. My barometer is set by how a taco shop makes their roll tacos...well, holy hell, these folks got some damn good rolled tacos! The tortillas are light, not heavy and thick, a decent amount of shredded beef, way decent guacamole with no excess layer of lettuce and the hot sauce is righteous. I also tried the Chile rellenos and my husband had the carne asada burrito...both very satisfying and fresh. It's not uber cheap but it's tasty and that's all that counts right? read more

I mean, we already have great Mexican food here in Alpine so pretty much the only thing this place has got going for it is the drive thru aspect. But anyway, I've tried their carne asada burrito, carnitas plate, and cheese enchiladas. All of them were decently priced and decent tasting but nothing to get excited about. Hands down the best bacon breakfast burrito I have ever had! The bacon was crispy not fatty and rubbery. The eggs are cooked perfectly (can't stand when some places overcook), and the perfect amount of potatoes are inside. Not greasy at all! I also love both the green and red sauces.
