I can't believe the service my friend and I received today. To the staff members that were working today, April 4th around 6:30 PM - you're incredibly rude and unprofessional. Try not to let the girl with the nose piercing and roman numeral tattoos on her arm help you. Apparently she doesn't know what a real $2 bill looks like, let alone how to appropriately check bills. I am SHOCKED. We came here with a group of friends (read: gave them a lot of business). One of our friends tried a new flavor and realized after a few sips that it wasn't quite what she was hoping for; she tried to like it, but it wasn't just going to happen. She explained her situation and asked if she could get a different flavor. The employees said sure, BUT SHE WOULD HAVE TO PURCHASE ANOTHER DRINK. Seriously? I feel like in this day and age of customer service, it is typical for a business to replace your order if you're not completely satisfied. Please know, I do not walk around with entitlement issues -- far from it. If I'm ever dissatisfied with an order, I will usually be fine with it and brush it off; but this case just rubbed me the wrong way. My friend didn't end up purchasing another drink; she just walked away with a drink she didn't love...or even like. And she was the one who recommended the place, because she comes here regularly. First impression: this place is dirty. Not like they just had a rush and need to catch up dirty, but let's ignore this dust that's been building up for months dirty. Lamps covered with months of dust. Curtains that look like they haven't been washed in a couple years. Deep stains on the walls. Menu boards look like they haven't been taken care of in forever. Passion Fruit snow bubble with Mango Jelly is now the new fave. I cannot up the stars because of an incident that happen last week. They totally forgot about my order. I saw everyone who ordered after me get their drinks and food before me. I finally go up to the girl and I asked about my order and I hear one of the girls in the back say to the cashier "that's the one I asked you about." Ok where is the communication between employees here? This location I have to admit is better then their other locations, parking isn't complicated at all. Staff greeted me right when I walked in. Took my order and then asked me to checked the screen to make sure it was correct. I hate to say it, but it sucked. At least the thai tea that we got sucked. We went to this location after dinner last night to try it out, and it was a bad choice. We got our thai teas half sweet and it tasted like half milk half water. It wasn't good. At all. We've gotten it half sweet before at other places and they still tasted like thai tea. I don't know, maybe other drinks here are good, but we had a bad experience, and probably wouldn't be coming back here. The place is also very small, with what looked to be 3 tables inside. Let me say first of all that I absolutely LOVE Tapioca Express. Ever since my brother brought my family there a few years ago, I had been going to the Convoy St. Tapex every chance I got for some bomb boba and delicious chicken, spending hours there with my friends playing Apples to Apples til closing. However, with this particular one, I found myself to be just slightly disappointed. Okay, being new, I guess it would be fair to give them a kind review. But the thing is, there is still a lot--emphasis on A LOT--of things they need to work out. For the time being, I would really only recommend people purchase drinks here. This tapex is a lot smaller in comparison to the one in Convoy so buying a drink here during those late-night-green-apple-green-tea-cravings-but-I'd-rather-not-use-up-all-my-gas nights is a lot more convenient than driving the extra fifteen minutes up north to convoy, looking for parking, and THEN purchasing your drink. Why I say that this particular location is only good for drinks is ALSO because I didn't exactly have the best food experience here. While the servers were nice and as accommodating as possible, they're food sizes were a lot smaller than expected. For example, a friend of mine bought the calamari and the bag had only about 2/3 of what we normally receive at tapex. I purchased the fries, expecting the giant box that they normally give since it was the same price as the box of fries at convoy. But no. I got a bag of fries, with about 12 fries in it. These fries, however, did taste a lot better; I just wished that they stuck to the protocol of tapex in terms of portions and presentation (only one stick in a bag of calamari? Haha. Funny.) I was perfectly satisfied with my Milk Tea and baby boba. THAT met my expectation and kept me happy. I may edit this review once the facility is completely up and running and menu savvy, but for now, this is as nice as I can be. -------edit-------- Sounds like they read the reviews since their portion sizes got bigger. However, their crispy chicken ISN'T crispy and they gave lumpia sauce instead of the sweet and sour sauce that they normally provide. Still good, I guess. I'm glad that theres finally Tapioca Express around the SDSU area. I've been to alot of Tap X's in the Bay Area and the one here by Convoy and I must say that this one is average. FIrst of all they have a smaller selection of drink choices and don't have some drinks such as Avocado and the classic Hong Kong milk teas. Second, they also don't have all the jelly/boba options like other places. Lastly, they have no combos as of right now, but they're "Coming Soon." Hopefully they'll have the "full" menu of everything up by then. I ordered the Honeydew Milk Tea w/ Boba and it wasn't bad considering they just opened. I also got the Spicy chicken, extra spicy, the portion sizes were moderate but less than what they give you at the Convoy spot. Although I gave it a 3 star, its definitely worth a try. To tonight's employees: However, today when I went, my drinks were very lazily prepared. One drink was spilling out of the sides as soon as it was put on the counter and as I tried to wipe the excess around the rim, one employee said "don't worry about it we'll clean it" but that wasn't my issue. My issue was not being able to take my drink off of the counter without making a mess everywhere. I had to aggressively drink my Thai tea while they were just chatting amongst each other. After I finally reached a point where I could safely take it out, I noticed my other drink was noticeably lacking in drink toppings. Please pay more attention to your customers needs, especially when there are only a few. Again, this is just for the specific persons working that worked this shift. I often come here after school cause it's so close to the SDSU campus. Their prices are very reasonable in my opinion compared to other boba places. They have milk tea, snacks, smoothie icees, and others. I usually get the honeydew milk tea or the original milk tea. They're not too terribly sweet and the bobas are delicious. Get their crispy chicken! Sooo good, a nice portion for a smaller lunch or snack too. I really like the crispy tofu as well. I'm not too sure if this place has AC so in the summer it's really hot in here. Some people working here are really nice and occasionally you get the okay ones that have an attitude.
