LA Times lead me to Taquearte California as a chilaquiles lover. After reading the article about this restaurant, I knew I had to visit. Thankfully one of my good friends lives in the area and vouched for it; so we gave it a try on a Sunday morning. The line was long but not too bad, I waited about 30 minutes. It's one of those places where you order at the counter first then grab a table. I tried their rojos chilaquiles and it was very good with a kick (despite it saying not spicy). The chips still had a nice crunch and I felt the portions were generous. I also ordered their bistec taco and that really good. I was surprised at the portion because one taco could easily feed two people. It also has some nice potatoes with it which filled me up. The restaurant cross between Rosemead Blvd and Beverly Blvd in shopping center on the left there's plenty parking on the street. Found parking just walking distance from the restaurant right ways we notice the restaurant is packed but there's a sign to have a seat and wait. We got a staff member hand a menu and order to the cashier. We look at the menu then we notice people were coming in and getting in line behind us. My wife order the Verdes classics not spicy with a egg on top. I order the same item but with egg and steak m,the eggs and steak are $4.50 each then we order our drinks she got Jamaica and I got a Mexican Coke both are refreshing with a meal are having. We're surprise our meals just arrived at the table so quick my wife couldn't wait to tasted the chilaquiles she love the chilaquiles she this were the best chilaquiles I ever tasted she please. It's a combo dine-in restaurant and pan dulce bakery, and it seems like the chilaquiles are the popular item or least it's main item and tacos. We ordered one red and one green chilaquiles plate, both with steak. The food came out pretty fast, and the ordering process was smooth. I really liked the flavor of the verde chilaquiles, but the steak was unfortunately very dry and tough. The highlight for me was definitely the pan dulce fresh and really good. It freaking burns my mouth lol, but was fresh. The steak was quality meat, but lacking in quantity. It's a better meat than Carne asada meat people usually use to BBQ, ** fun fact. you can use different meats when BBQ or eating "CARNE ASADA", Carne asada just means grilled meat, the meat could be flank steak skirt steak and others. Definitely worth it! The chilaquiles are one of the best we have had! We ordered both the green and the red ones with over medium eggs. The green ones were spicier and very flavorful!!! You could really taste the tomatillo flavor. The red ones were also tasty. I ordered the medium ones just in case they were too spicy but not spice at all. A hidden gem in Rivera to say the least . While they do have a limited menu the food is not limited in flavor and taste ! At first glance we noticed a line outside there's no reservations you basically just stand in line first come first served . The line moved quickly which was a good thing . As we can in we noticed a unique and inventive concept a restaurant in one side of the front and the other side with its individual doors a bakery . The restaurant was spacious and inviting several customers with families enjoying good traditional food. Ok so before we came here we heard about how good the food was so now I had to try it out for myself . I ordered chilaquiles divorciados (means two different sauces a green side and red ) spicy of course and a red chilaquiles traditional (non spicy) . Queso quemado (a burnt cheese chicharon that is a must to try and a taco with nopales , pork chops , chorizo and onions . The chilaquiles were crispy and not drowned in sauce with over easy eggs and steak (you can get different types of proteins sick as chorizo , chicken , steak and pork chops) cream cheese and of course a delicious sauce . These were a hit and loved it ! The taco was just ok and not really my favorite but still okay . The coffee was amazing they had self serve cafe de olla and regular coffee . The bakery is an added plus since I was able to get a fresh baked sweet bread to enjoy my coffee. Over all a good experience and a tasty one . When arriving, a server instructed us to wait outside and she would call us in to order as tables cleared up. This is not your typical restaurant where you sit down and wait for your order to be taken. Once you order, you look for an open table and sit down. It took about 10 mins or so for our food to get to us since it was made fresh, it was worth every minute of waiting! When the food came out, the first thing was the Quesadilla. Steaming hot off the grill. Wish I had a pic of the cheese pull. I got the classic chilaquiles divorciados, which are not spicy what so ever. The cashier will ask if you want them spicy or not. Since it was our first time there, I wanted to enjoy the food. We also got a side of scrambled eggs and chorizo which was not spicy at all. Chilaquiles here are decent (pasan) not the best I've ever had but good enough to keep coming back if you don't feel like making them yourself at home. It's very difficult to find a good Chilaquiles spot. Many try but fall short on something and it's usually the sauce and meat quality. Taquearte since day one has been consistent with their plate presentation & flavors. Staff is friendly and does their best to get orders out as quickly as possible. Like I said in the beginning not my number 1 spot for Chilaquiles but my number 1 spot closed down. Taquearte for now slid into number 1 by default. In the beginning the wait time was pretty long depending on the day. Honestly their serving system was a little unorganized and chaotic. You couldn't put in phone orders or do takeout without waiting in the line of the patrons waiting to dine in. The restaurant is small and ownership finally recognized the need for more seating and since have added extra seating and changed their takeout ordering system. Very much appreciate the extra seating and takeout ordering system. Don't get me wrong about this place. The tacos are also solid, especially the campechano style with different meats combined. Everything tastes fresh and made with care, and the portions are generous. It's a smaller spot and it can get busy, but the food is definitely worth the wait. We ordered our food to go. My boyfriend ordered the spicy red chilaquiles with beef steak and sunny-side-up eggs, while I ordered the green chilaquiles with beef steak, no spice, and no eggs. The reason for the missing star is because when we got to the park to eat, we realized they had mixed up our order. My green chilaquiles had the eggs, and his red ones had no eggs. I took a bite of the red ones just to see if I could maybe tolerate them, but they were way too spicy for me. It was disappointing, but I understand mistakes happen. Thankfully, my boyfriend was able to take the eggs off my green chilaquiles with barely any yolk left behind (I absolutely despise eggs), so it all worked out. The green ones still had a little kick, but nothing compared to the red. The other reason I docked a star was because the service wasn't the friendliest, which we also kind of understood since it was about 40 minutes before closing. They forgot our agua fresca, and I had to politely remind them we had ordered one. The girl helping us seemed a little bothered, but she did get it for us. This is a personal preference but I was looking at the health grade (after I sat down), and they had a letter B. Now I'm super big usually on checking this, but didn't this time and that also might have slighted my judgement. The chilaquiles aren't anything special in my opinion! Overall I'd give it 7/10. The chilaquiles were overly watered down, lacking the richness and depth you expect from a proper red sauce. Instead of being saucy and bold, they were soggy and diluted, almost like the sauce had been stretched too thin. The "NY steak" was the biggest letdown. What was served looked no different than a generic beef steak cut thin, uneven, and lacking the texture or quality you'd expect from an actual New York strip. If you're advertising NY steak, the cut and presentation should reflect that. This did not. The chorizo was acceptable, but it couldn't save the dish. Overall, the plate looked sloppy and rushed, especially for a place that gets so much praise. That said, I'm willing to give them one more try, because everyone can have an off day. But based on this experience alone, I would not recommend it outright. If you're curious because of the hype, try it at your own discretion, just set your expectations accordingly. $22 Dollar plate. read more
