As soon as we arrived, the parking lot was pretty small, and we walked in through the back door near the bathroom which, unfortunately, smelled really bad. Even just walking by it made us hesitate, and we looked at each other like, "Do we leave?" We almost did. But we decided to go up and check the place out anyway. The menu is very small, and there was only one guy running the whole place, so it felt like they might have just recently opened or were just getting started. We ordered tacos de canasta, a torta ahogada, and a quesadilla with meat. The torta ahogada was really, really good. The tacos de canasta were so good that we ended up ordering a second round. They're a bit small, but I think that's just how they're supposed to be. Still, they were packed with flavor. Everything we tried was delicious. We were actually the first ones there around 11 or 12, and not long after, once lunchtime hit, the place filled up quickly and there were no empty seats. This food was so good! We started eating before we took the photos! That's how delicious their tacos de canasta and tacos dorados are! These are so unique and yummy! They're like nothing you've ever had! The tacos de canasta are soft and have a delicious sauce on top, served with pickled onions and shredded cabbage! Their chile is perfect, not too hot, but has a perfect kick! The tacos dorados are served with some really good tender carnitas on top and with crispy fresh cabbage and the addictive sauce! Tried the Torta Ahogada and a couple of the tacos de canasta. Tacos had no business hitting that hard, they were so good. Torta was good salsa was good and hot salsa for the torta ahogada brought it together. Also tried an order of the tacos dorados for my buddy, also delish. Expect a short wait, food is prepared fresh, pro tip order ahead if you are strapped for time. Staff was super friendly, parking is small for in the back dedicated for just the business. When I saw OMG I mean it and wish that everyone who sees this place would stop and try the food. It's amazing. I felt like I was eating in Guadalajara. The food and service is excellent. This review comes with some help from my backseat yelp*er, my hubby. He loves to follow food accounts on IG, and La Chiva Tapatia is one of them. He's drawn to foods that he grew up with, especially foods that remind him of his Dad or his grandparents. I never got around to trying any of mi suegro's cooking, but I'm sure it would have been something I'd enjoy. We only tried La Chiva Tapatia once, but it'll be a place that we'll return to in the future. Their food has great flavor, is reasonably priced, and service was quick and thorough. This is a small place, as I drove right past it, but there's plenty of street and lot parking, outdoor seating, and enough indoor seating for at least 16 people. We ordered the Torta Ahogada, Tacos Dorados de papa sin carne, Tacos Dorados de panela con carne, Carne En Su Jugo, and an horchata. I wanted to order the Tacos de Canasta, but there wasn't enough for a full order (5 tacos). I took that as being a popular item, and will be willing to try it the next time around. We ordered everything to go, and were given a nice baggie full of their very spicy red salsa and the "drowning" sauce for the torta. We poured some of that sauce all over some of the tacos, too. The tacos all had a great crunch to them, and the fillings were just enough. The cabbage and pickled red onions on top added another layer of freshness. I've read that some people thought there was too much cabbage, but our orders had just the right amount. I've made Carne En Su Jugo plenty of times before, so I get kinda partial to my own recipe. Fortunately for La Chiva Tapatia, their recipe doesn't differ too much from mine, lol! It was a good enough portion with plenty of beans, bacon, and beef for every bite. The picture I took of the Carne En Su Jugo does not do it any justice, as I took it right after taking off the lid, and it wasn't mixed around. The flavors are definitely there, and it was still piping hot after the drive home. When we arrived there, there were maybe 4 tables occupied and everyone seemed to be really into their meals. There was an older couple that ordered more food for dine in, and then ordered more food to go. That has to be a good sign that the food is good, yah? When we got our order, almost all the tables were full. We actually got up from waiting from one of the tables to better accommodate the people wanting to dine in. We assumed that it was the grandma, dad, and daughter running the show. I'm always one for supporting small businesses, even more so, family businesses. My daughter and I thought they did a great job getting all the orders out, were very friendly upon entering and leaving, and they communicated well with each other and the patrons. This is one of the few spots that really has authentic food from Guadalajara. I was hesitant going because I just got back from Guadalajara and was left craving a torta ahogada. To my surprise, the sauce for the torta was very flavorful! Traditionally the torta is not served with refried beans so I simply told them to hold the beans. I just wish they added more meat (carnitas) into the torta. Mine had little meat that didn't balance with the torta and cabbage. Also, I ordered the carne en su jugo and wow! It had soooo much flavor. I'm definitely going back soon as every bite took me back to the motherland. But I will definitely ask them to be generous on the meat for the torta read more
