There are 6 locations, this location is closest, and it is in a gas station open 24/7. It's right across the street from the strip mall that has my favorite lunch in Texas: Empa Mundo (if you have not been there, get in your car and go to Empa Mundo immediately!) This place was also very good, but I think avoid it in summer b/c the only seating is in your car, or a partially shaded table just off the gas pumps. The one thing you need to know is: get the Trompo (HA!, I rhymed!). I opted for the 3 taco plate b/c I always like to try the beans in all mexican places, the rice was unremarkable. They ask if you want flour or corn tortillas, I got 1 corn and 2 flour to see which was better, and the flour was better for me. It also comes with grilled onions, fresh onions, limes and 2 (hot) sauces on the side. This Trompo meat was glorious... tender AND chewy, with bits of char in places, all well spiced (yes there were a few very small inedible bites, but that is to be expected). Looks like you can just get a big plate of the tromp meat to go, which would be fun for a quesadilla party.

Are the best tacos in Texas found in a gas station in Irving? I would love for someone to show me better, because these are slap yo mama, good. All I have had is the trompo. I keep thinking that I will try something else, but why? Fancy places that put micro greens on their carnitas, need to come work with these fellas for a day to see how it is DONE. Simple, delicious, friendly. Everything I want in a taco experience. Top it off with some lime, cilantro, onion, and a grilled serrano? It is everything you want a taco to be, and then some. I was excited to see the 30 five-star reviews of this place, and the taste of the tacos was great. I expect hole-in-the-wall places like this to "look a certain way", because aesthetics aren't what they're going for. Food quality, is. So when I walked into the gas station convenience store that houses Taqueria Charlys, I was a little surprised to see some of the staff cutting onions and tearing lettuce in the open tile area of the convenience store, in front of the open refrigerated area where customers were walking freely to pick up items. I can't find if there is a subparagraph of the Texas Food Safety rules that prohibits this, but I have to say that it threw me off a bit. I've never seen food prepared in the open air and not behind a counter at a restaurant, hole in the wall or not. So, if you don't mind this and want to roll the dice with some tacos that taste great and (thus far) don't seem to be contaminated, feel free to visit Taqueria Charlys. I have to say this will probably be my only visit.

I finally decided to give this place a try because of the good reviews and very close to home. The first time there had the Taco Plate special (3 tacos of your choice, rice & beans, plus sauces, grilled onions and a pepper). This was a great value for $10. The trompo was really good. As other reviewers mentioned the barbacoa was a bit fatty, but still delicious. I've gone back and only gotten the trompo meat. They also sell 1lb of any meat for approx $11. This comes with the usual sided that accompany tacos as well as tortillas which could make for convenient weeknight meals. Also noticed a sign that said Menudo is available on sat and sun.

I generally don't rate gas station food.... However, it was too good not to share! The food: I ordered a beef burrito. It was toasted, and contained beef, lettuce, sour cream, refried beans, carrots and corn. The flavor profile was great. There were grilled onions and peppers on the side, red sauce and green sauce.... I didn't use any of them. The burrito was that good. Usually I find that the beans are just a filler, however the beans complemented the burrito with added flavor. The service, for a walk up stand inside a quick stop, you get what you expect. They were responsive, working constantly, Nice folks. Ambiance, walk up food stand. Not a sit down restaurant. I would recommend calling ahead and you and your friends/coworkers have a delicious meal together. My cost for the burrito was just under $11 including tax. It will be two meals for me.

Don't let the surroundings fool you. This is one of the best places to get tacos. I often call ahead, pick the food up, & eat comfortably in my home. I usually buy 1 pound of trompo meat &/or 1 pound of lengua. It comes with salsas, veggies, & freshly made tortillas. Mmm mmm good! The only downside is that miscommunication is common, but they always fix my order.

Came here specifically to try the trompo tacos. They were delicious! The woman at the register was super friendly and it only took a few minutes to get my order. Also got a side of rice and beans which were also delicious.

OMG is all I can say. Where has this place been since I have moved to Texas? I ordered 2 beef tacos and the Big Burrito and walked out with more food than I have ever had served and it was delicious. No need to cover it in sauces either. This place is a gem.

Gas station tacos, sketchy right? WRONG!!! These guys make the best tacos around town. I prefer the trombo meat, its crispy and delicious. They have red and green hot sauces which have the perfect amount of flavor and heat, and their prices are very reasonable for the food that you get. If you're feeling like some tacos, or any Mexican food for that matter, I recommend giving these guys a try. read more

Bad take out service. Placed an order to be picked up @11 am two days in advance. Got there and one hour later still not ready to be picked up. Also, come to find out no rice and beans were given and when we called to have a refund, person said no refund because beans and rice were free. They are not free, they are included in meal which we paid for. Very disappointed. Will not return. read more

Ordered a big order for an office party. It was suppose to come with rice and beans ordered it 2 days in advance and still the order was not ready when arrived to be picked up. When we called to let them know the beans and rice were not in the bags and we wanted a refund they claimed if we wanted the beans and rice we needed to go back to get them and they do not give refund. Would never recommend such horrible customer service business. read more

Hole in the wall, gas station tacos. Currently the best pastor, Barbacoa, tripas, and lengua in the area. Street tacos with plenty of meat. They make their own hot sauce I think. The green is my favorite hot sauce no contest. They have THE BEST Al Pastor tacos in Irving, and that's saying something because there are so damn many Mexican places in Irving. They are literally on every other corner. This place is the best if you want a good street taco though. They have a 10 for 13.99 with rice and beans special so you have plenty to share at a great price. It's in a run down convenience store that's kinda grimy but ignore that and go straight to the back. I usually call ahead so I don't have to spend much time in that place. read more

DO.NOT.EAT. HERE. I've never been more encouraged to leave a review before. Do not give these dishonest people your business. The first time I tried the place because of the reviews, I figured the food must be really good and to my delight, it was! I promised that whenever I was in the area I would always visit. A week later I was in the area again and went. It was in the morning so I ordered a large steak breakfast burrito. As I placed my order, the cooks in the back along with the cashier started speaking in Spanish and laughing, immediately I got a vibe that they were talking about me as they also mentioned my order. But I shrugged it off as nothing but maybe a joke being made. As the guy rings me up I immediately notice that he overcharged me. The price is 5.99 but for some reason, he charged me $10 almost double...I try not to be a confrontational type of guy and there were other people behind me as well, so I convinced myself that maybe the order comes with a side of fries or maybe the steak was a premium item(even tho it didn't say that on the menue). I'm a little annoyed but since the food I had the first time was so good I figured it would be worth it. I get my food super fast witch was surprising but nice, and leave to my car. As I started to leave I get a screaming feeling to check my order. I open it up and it is NOT WHAT I ORDERED. It was not a breakfast burrito, it had lettuce tomatoes, beans, and rice. I realize what happened. Instead of taking the time to actually make my breakfast burrito which would take the time they just made me another item with ingredients that were already ready, such as beans, rice, lettuce, ect. Either A they thought by the time I realized what happened I would have been gone and wouldn't want to come back or B I would be too dumb to notice. I called up the store from my car and asked how much the large breakfast burrito was and what it came with. I was told it was 5.99 and that it came with literally everything that was not in my burrito. I was Heated. I wasn't gonna let them take advantage of me like that (btw I'm black & I don't speak Spanish which is why I think they did that). I went back in and I kept calm even tho I wanted to yell, and I asserted myself and asked him why he overcharged me for my food and then served me the wrong item on purpose. THE LOOK ON HIS FACE WAS PRICELESS. Pure shock, he didn't even consider the idea of me realizing and confronting him. He was stuttering and everything. It made it worth stepping out of my comfort zone. He refunded me the overcharged amount (which wasn't even my main concern it was about being disrespected and taken advantage of) but he couldn't tell me WHY he overcharged me or gave me the wrong order. Also, all of the workers were mean mugging me as if I had done something wrong! They remade my order correctly, which took time because they were actually making it how it should be(wasn't even good). They lost a loyal customer that would have spent hundreds at their establishment. I know this review is very long but I needed to get it off my chest because I'm so mad. I love Mexican food and always support small businesses but you should treat all customers with the same respect, regardless if they are or not Mexican. As people of color, we should be uplifting each other not trying to take advantage of each other! Food is good here but the people are unethical, I recommend supporting another business with better values. read more

Bang for your buck. One of the hidden gems on Walnut Hill, if you can get past the area the Trompo here is one of my lifetime favorites. The workers remember you and are really friendly. 12 dollars for a pound of meat making this place a hit for tacos for friends or even just yourself, please treat yourself if you have the chance! read more

BEST TACOS IVE EVER HAD!! ..and I've eaten a lot of tacos. Charly's has become my go-to anytime I want tacos. I even had them cater my birthday party and everyone was blown away. BETTER THAN FUEL CITY! One word. TROMPO. This is pastor cooked the same way as a gyro. They slice the meat then put it on the flat top to crisp it up. I crave these tacos at least once a week. This place will never cease to amaze with every bite. The salsa is always on point and the breakfast burritos are incredible. I can't say enough about this place. Victor is usually heading up the kitchen and wonderful. Please support this little taqueria inside a gas station. read more

I started coming to Taqueria Charlys about 4 months ago and it has the best tacos and refried beans and rice that I have ever had! This place is inside of the gas station on the corner of N Beltline Rd and Country Club in Irving Tx. If you are anywhere near this place you have to stop in and grab the 3 taco meal with rice and beans! And the price is great as well! read more

The restaurant itself is always clean and orderly. And the staff is always friendly and efficient. My favorite go-tos are the Queso Blanco and the Chicken Fajitas. The Queso is second to none. The Chicken Fajitas always have a nice wood grilled flavor to them that is sure to please you! A few times I have made it to dessert, but not very often. My favorite dessert herebis the churros. They are delicious in their own right, but they also give you different dipping sauces like chocolate, caramel, or even a vanilla cream. They are served hot and fresh!

All recent bills were anywhere from 13% to 16.5% hidden in the "tax" line, not even itemized. I'm sure because they know most won't realize it. The tacos remind me of the tacos I get in Mexico with the grilled pineapple and picked onions. The salsa offered with the chips is warm and I love that. Will definitely be a go to restaurant for me. Lunch specials- I don't even know if this is on their website but they have a great lunch menu and they have a lunch combo special where you can pick two items for $10.50 and it comes with rice and beans. I ordered the cheese enchilada and the mini chimichanga. Full disclosure I didn't eat the mini chimichanga because I didn't know it was covered in queso and I hate queso (unpopular opinion- I know). I loved the enchilada though and it had chili con carne sauce which was delicious. Rice and beans were also very good. Next time I'll just say no queso on the chimi. The restaurant is really tiny but cozy and you can tell it is family owned. Definitely will be a regular spot for me and will be back.

The manager also came and gave us free beef fajita samples since he found out it was our first time. The flavor and juiciness of the beef blew me away. My wife and I got queso to compliment the complimentary tortilla chips and salsa and bean dips. I was a big fan of the beans too, didn't think I would be. We ended up getting a trio (beef, chicken, shrimp) fajita 1/2 pound and it was perfect for the 2 of us. You can taste the grilled and charred flavor on the meats. The chicken and shrimp were slightly on the drier side but when combined with the sour cream, beans, guac, cheese, they were perfection. For the two people, the limitation ended up being more the toppings to the fajitas but it was just enough. At about $25 for 2, that was a steal. The queso was about $9. Right before we were about to leave, Kayla recommended the tres leches dessert and you know we had to try it. It was solid. Loved the cream on top. Definitely would come back again!

Now, was it the absolute best Mexican food I've ever had? No. But it was still leagues beyond most of what we've experienced lately back home in South Dakota. The carne asada especially stood out. The portion was massive, tender, and packed with smoky, savory flavor. You could immediately tell it had actually spent some time on a grill instead of simply being rushed out of a kitchen. We also enjoyed the tacos, enchiladas, and burritos, all of which had that comforting Tex-Mex richness and seasoning that we've really missed. Unfortunately, we were on a fairly tight travel schedule and couldn't linger the way we would have liked. Honestly, this felt like the sort of place where you could easily sit awhile longer, enjoy another drink, sample more dishes, and just soak in the lively atmosphere.
