Recently stopped into Taqueria El Tapatio for dinner with my love. We're trying more restaurants in our area and that night we were looking for something comforting and relaxing. We found that and more at Taqueria El Tapatio. They have a very large space that is brightly lit and very colorfully decorated. They have booths and stand alone tables, each of which feature carvings of natural scenes and animals. There were several families and couples already enjoying meals when we sat down. We were greeted with complementary chips and salsa. The chips were so fresh they were still warm. The salsas were all delicious. I was very partial to the chile de árbol. We chose to have tacos de al pastor, a taco de pechuga y queso fundido, and the Nachos Supremos. We took our time and zero pictures. The food was delicious, fresh, and generously portioned. On the way out we ordered a strawberry liquado and it was what dreams are made of. Highly recommend gifting yourself a chill night at this joint or grabbing some food for the road. This place made me feel like I was right inside my moms kitchen. Let me start by saying the salsa with chips here is so delicious. I usually am not much of a salsa with chips gal when it comes to restaurants like this. The chips were crispy, the salsa was perfection and just so savory and spicy! The green salsa was like a combo of roasted green peppers with avocado it was my favorite and the red salsa was the traditional tomatoes/pepper salsa. I wish we had them here in Des Moines. The service was amazing too. Just like at home they greeted us right away and told us to sit where we would like. The place also smelled so clean. I ordered to drink the carrot/orange juice. Made me feel like I was in the markets in Mexico picking up a fresh juice! To eat i ordered a steak, a tripa taco and a ceviche shrimp tostada. Needless to say this made me feel completely satisfied by the end. The shrimp ceviche tostada was a a generous amount and it was mouth watering good. The asada taco was delicious. The tripa taco was made how I like it crispy and just so good. The lady asked if we wanted the tripe soft or crispy which was so nice that they ask because everyone has different preferences on how they like their tripa. My mom ordered a order of the tripa tacos and she had them soft. My mom was so impressed by this place and that says a lot from a women who is a amazing cook herself. Anyway this is HIGHLY recommended if you love AUTHENTIC Mexican food. I will DEFINITELY be back here. I'm already planning my next trip! read more

The most delicious and best value meal. Came here for a late dinner during a weeknight and so glad we did. Will definitely be coming back more regularly! The mini tacos were $10 for 5 and perfectly portioned. We got Al pastor and it had a good Smokey and charred flavor to this. Taco birrias were amazingly crispy, meat was tender and moist. The good: Honestly, this place is an excellent value! Chips and salsa on the table, chef's kiss. It just doesn't happen nowadays except here. And the chips are a very satisfying texture. A little grainy, but still delicate and thin, but sturdy enough to dip. Comes with both a green and a red salsa. The green is a bit spicy, but flavorful and the red is very fresh tasting and a bit easier on the hotness. I love the ambiance, it's very bright and colorful. The location could be considered divey, but the decor brings it up a notch and is really pleasant. I'm grateful to the waitress that turned the tv off when requested! It was loud, but they were willing to turn it off for us. There was a really big party going on when we came, and it seemed they handled the business pretty well. I had one quesabirria with consomme and an al pastor sope. My friend had a beef milanesa torta which he enjoyed. I would pass on the al pastor, and the quesabirria was decent but the consomme was exceptional. Meaty and perfect seasoning. I would get the bigger one with the 3 quesabirria next time! The main complaints I would have is that the Al Pastor is way too charred and greasy! I have to remember not to get it next time. Bro this food was bussin bussin. And the supreme nachos was HUGEEE. Ther service was super friendly too, there are times where if I don't fit the race of the store, I feel like I get the cold shoulder but the staff here was so friendly and nice, I didn't get that feeling at all. Love at first sight. We went to Taqueria El Tapatio the very next day and ordered the Nachos Supremos. Warm chips topped with beans, cheese, and mountains of meat. 1/2 Asada, 1/2 Al Pastor. These nachos were PHENOMENAL! Also ordered mini tacos, 5 for $6. They come filled with carne asada (can't change filling), onions, cilantro, and red salsa. Washed down this meal with a large Horchata. It was on the sweeter end with sweetened condensed milk but still very refreshing. Loved this place. Great for groups. Great service. Great food. I came here after a long day of running errands, and I'm pleased to let you know, this food blew the hunger right out of me and it was actually worth every dime. I got the steak torta and the small tacos, I thought I was going to get one taco but it came in 6, and the total for both was about $13 which I thought was a reasonably price. This place has good food in a neighborhood full of similar restaurants with good food. We came in to try El Tapatio at the recommendation of neighbors. I was happy with my burrito order (very crispy tortilla, which I appreciate) but it was basically the same as the burritos at other restaurants in the area. Same with fajitas and tostadas. Service was OK but a bit slow at times. It took kind of awhile to get the bill and there wasn't really anyone else in the place. All in all, an A-OK place to stop in and get a meal. read more
