Stopped into Taqueria Huentitan to grab a quick bite as we were waiting for our car window to be fixed and I'm happy we did! The staff were friendly and welcoming and we received our food quick and hot. We ordered 2 large horchata iced coffees, 2 chicken tacos and two steak tacos. The tacos were filled with meat and delicious! The coffee was really the star of the show. I honestly have not had better horchata than this! Taqueria Huentitan is an excellent Mexican Restaurant on Grand Avenue in Chicago - 100% authentic Mexican food. The service is very good, our waiter was very friendly and inside there is a decent amount of seating if you want to dine in. I had the steak taco dinner - the steak has a ton of flavor and 0 fat to it it's great quality. Free chips and salsa if you're dining in - the taco salad was very good too and both meals portion sizes are massive. There's a lady that usually wears braids that wrap around her head that always gives a terrible attitude if you're not a Spanish speaker. The quality has went down since COVID. I drive over 12 miles one way to visit this taqueria. I ordered 4 steak tacos with everything. This includes avocado, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, cilantro and sour cream. When I ordered the lady repeated my order correctly and I paid for all these topping. But when I got home, I only got a lot of lettuce, some onion and almost no tomato. I was very disappointed. The tacos were very dry and not flavorful. The fresh lime and the green habanera sauce couldn't save these tacos. Well it's been a long time since I've been here despite living near the area for so long. An African American coworker took me here as a treat out back in the mid 1990s and I forgot about this place so it was really good and it is actually still decent now. A hole in the wall place but very good casual Mexican food. They're a big steak burrito is only 10 99 but with another dollar more you can put guacamole. which makes it better unless you don't like avocado or guacamole? Other than that it wasn't too expensive unless you go for the dinners later on tonight which is over $20 and I can't afford what I used to be eating fancy foods even though this is a hole in the wall it's still a little expensive. The salsa was searingly hot and fresh, has a kick that lasts for a second, and keeps you re-dipping your chips then re-sipping horchata for the cool down. I devoured the lengua taco in a heartbeat and could have eaten a few more but I had to save room for the torta. The lengua was tender and so, so good, the salsa verde a great complement. The simple ingredients (lengua, diced onion, chopped cilatro and two corn tortillas) and made the best taco. Next time, I could just order a whole bunch of tacos and call it a happy day. The torta was also great, in a way that the buns were brushed with butter/oil and then toasted. The neatness of how it was put together (unlike other tortas I've had), framed each layer of lettuce avocado, tomato, mayonnaise, lettuce and al pastor. It was stuffed to the max and... get this, they put AVOCADO in their tortas (not just as an extra)! The service! Let's start with the ladies in the front who answer the phones. TRASH!! Rude and ignorant. I asked a simple question and she hung up on me. Called back and the night manger "Mike" claimed it must have been a disconnection. At that moment I knew he was trash just as well. Explained my (2) phone call experience with the ladies in the front and he had all the excuses in the book to defend his employees. My husband called at 1:25 AM. The lady answered and stated we don't take over the phone orders so he asked her, then why are you answering the phones? She said you can come in ended the call. I then called right after someone answered the saying hello. I said hi, she said yeah(with a funky attitude)... I said who am I calling? She's like who do you want to speak to? The last time I checked when you call a business, they're to state who they are when they answer the phone. That didn't happen here. I asked if they're taking orders she's said no, so I asked if not then why answer the phone? Mind you restaurant closes in an hour from my call 2:30am. Called back Mike said they answer the calls because drunk and rude people call in so they need to let them know no phone orders to come in. If this business doesn't like drunk customers then don't stay open late. The disrespect over the phone was very inappropriate. My husband was inside ordering while i was talking to "Mike" and not one person was cooking all were leaning against the window talking amongst one another. When my husband asked how long would it take for one burrito to be made they were like oh it's in process FYI, not one person was cooking. I live around the corner and my burrito was ice cold! Apparently Juanita runs the restaurant Jim is the day manger and Mike who is upstairs is the night manager. I've worked in the restaurant industry and this would have never been accepted by niter crew nor manger! I asked to speak Juanita. But apparently she's in and out no specific time or date. I've been going to this place for decades, but today the rudeness lead me to write this negative review. The customer at the register was taking forever to decide and causing a line to form looking at the menu. After a few minutes, it would have been helpful to ask them to step aside and return when they were ready to order, not a big deal though. The other register was opened and the 2 customers in front of me was taken care of as well as a pickup order that walked in. The cashier who opened the 2nd register then walked away as if I wasn't still in line. I waited to see if she was actually doing something but it appeared as if she was just looking for something else to do other than serve me. Yahoo! Its been 10 years since I've had a burrito from here. I used to go to this place at 2-3-4 o'clock in the morning when I lived in Chicago and had the extreme munchies from clubing . There would be a line around the building to get in. Its not in a good neighborhood. In fact its in a bad neighborhood BUT it is the best steak burritto you will get anywhere, Period end of story!! Very little english spoken in this place. At least they have a police officer around that provides a little comfort. Something about the sign and building compelled me to stop in. It was also nice to see the guys in the kitchen working from outside. Inside, it's very casual. You place your order with one of the cooks and your meal is made to order. I had the Chicken Torta and the Plantano de Leche Licuado. The Chicken Torta was huge! All ingredients were very fresh. You can see onions, avocados, bananas and all sorts of fruits and vegetables on display throughout the restaurant. I wish that the Chicken was marinated in something as it was kind of bland. They serve limes, raw onions and salsa if you dine in. The Plantano de Leche Licuado was sooooo good. A must have! My meal cost me about $12 with tip. Next time, I'll probably order the Chorizo Burrito (first time I've heard of such a thing!) or the Carne Asada Tortas and/or Tacos. The menu displayed when you first walk in are not the only items they have - they also have a menu full of Breakfast and Dinner items on the tables. If you only speak English, there may be a bit of a language barrier. Don't let that stop you from coming in - it's a very diverse crowd here. It gets busy too - the food is great! Swindlers - do not entrust your taco ingredients on the workers, otherwise they will add ALL extra-costing toppings available, that'll cost you more than what's clearly stated on the menu. I had a Postmate delivery - a person that goes into an establishment to order and deliver things to you. I explicitly told Postmate to buy me a taco dinner ($5.59) and a seller ate order of individual tacos ($1.99). I received my tacos with sour cream and avocado on each taco, plus the overage charge for such additives...BARF. I called Huentitan and the man over the phone explained some illogical BS to me: "Our tacos normally have onions, cilantro, tomatoes, and lettuce. If we ask, 'You want everything?' It includes all ingredients that cost extra. People get angry at us if we don't put avocados when they say they 'want everything'; they also get angry when we tell them avocados cost extra because they already know." Sounds like someone's been well-versed on Chipotle's guac issue. Except none of the things he says makes sense. First of all, if a taco costs $1.99, and you ask a customer if they want everything on it, it's assumed that everything would be within the confines of the $1.99 charge - not everything including extra charges! If customers want extra toppings that are not included with the taco, it only makes sense for you to leave it up to the customer to request. MAYBE YOU GUYS SHOULD JUST STOP ASKING "EVERYTHING ON IT?" Not everyone knows that that's code for 'double the price of my taco'. Also, who are these customers that get angry with you for not automatically putting guac and sour cream on their taco? 1) that's disgusting 2) those aren't standard ingredients that one should feel entitled to be included in a taco. Even with chipotle, the only reason why customers get upset is because in the first place, they REQUEST for guac and then get told about extra charge. This guy's trying to tell me that all their customers know that 'everything on it' means that includes avocado and sour cream, and that if his cooks clarify the extra charge, they get angry. Yeah, because again, 'everything on it' means including the things not included in the regular price. This conversation went in circles, and he just won't admit to their mistake.
