Had a craving for a burrito and stopped in. I was warmly greeted and was given a menu. They had some dishes that almost swayed me, but in the end, I ordered the carne asada burrito dinner. As I waited another couple was eating and their food looked awesome, so I couldn't wait to get my food. The dining area was cute with plants on a majority of the tables. I received my food and went home, it was still plenty warm. The burrito wasn't packed with a lot of filler it had a nice ratio of sour cream, lettuce, cheese and tomatoes. It was a little greasy but it didn't fall apart. The flavor of the carne asada was seasoned well and it was a good bite. The carne asada burrito was good but to me, the rice and beans were the stars. Great flavor on the rice and the beans were creamy and once I mixed the cheese into beans, it was a game changer. I asked for the spicy salsa and it had good flavor but not that much heat. I put some of my own chile de arbol salsa on the burrito. Other than a greasy burrito it was a good dinner at an even greater price point. read more

I walked into Ciudad Hidalgo randomly and I'm so glad I did. This place is definitely a small hole-in-the-wall, but those are usually the best spots -- and this one did not disappoint. As soon as I sat down, the waitress brought out chips with a green salsa. It was flavorful but not spicy, so I asked if they had something with more heat. She immediately brought out a red hot sauce with a great kick -- exactly what I was looking for. I asked her what she recommended and she said their specialty is the huaraches. I plan on coming back for that, but this time I ordered a steak sope and asked to add nopales, plus a taco de chicharrón on the side. A few minutes later, my food arrived and wow -- the sope was MASSIVE and clearly homemade. From the very first bite, I was impressed. It was flavorful, fresh, and filling. Honestly, it was so big that I didn't even get to the taco yet -- I'm saving that for breakfast tomorrow. Safe to say, this might be my new go-to local Mexican spot. Affordable hole in the wall that serves up solid tacos and burritos. I ordered a combination burrito and got to choose two different proteins - I went for the asada and al pastor and could not stop myself from eating the entire burrito. Slightly crunchy / chewy, the cheese was melted perfectly and the amount of meat in the burrito was generous and filling. Firstly, great space, a lot of seating but still gives the mom and pops vibe. Second, the service was really great! Very nice and checked on you periodically. But the best thing? The tacos! SO GOOD. At that price? I got 6 tacos to eat there and my partner got 3. It was so good and so fresh that I bought 3 more to eat for lunch the next day. Both of the salsa at the table was so fresh. The feature here is the mini taco special which are solid, affordable, fresh and plentiful- considering that that they are "mini". The chips are complementary and come with standard homemade green and red salsas. The fajitas were also an excellent value, liquados are generous too. However, for me the atmosphere is the chief attraction, cozy, familiar, and on the shady side of Clark in the afternoon it is very comfortable and the service is consistent and very courteous. Two televisions play a tele-novella or family movie in Spanish to accompany your dining without being loud. Nice Mexican family vibe, regulars and great prices. The biggest torta I have ever had! $6.50 for this beast of a sandwich is totally worth every bite. This torta is made out of carne asada, cheese, chopped lettuce, chopped tomato, & sour cream. All ingredients stayed well in the sandwich & it was not a mess to eat even at this size. We got free chips for dining in & they tasted fresh out the fryer! I initially opted for a more extensive restaurant but reviews on Yelp brought me to this joint. We ordered steak tacos along with some rice and beans. Hit the spot, very good and we will be back. I love this place its a northside legend and i hope it never ever goes away. Something like $7 for a gigantic fresh handmade corn tortilla steak quesadilla. Yes. I am a fan of Taqueria & Restaurant Cd. Hidalgo! You walk in and can seat yourself. There are seating options for small to large groups. When you sit down you get complimentary chips and salsa (verde and roja picante). Our table ordered the taco plate (3 tacos + rice and beans) and a variety of their $1 tacos. You can mix/match meats for their taco plates. As for their $1 tacos, you can choose from asada, pollo, pastor, or picadillo. The $1 tacos are going to on a much smaller tortilla but it's what you pay for. You have options for onion + cilantro or lettuce + tomato. I personally loved the tacos! I ordered 4 asada and 4 pastor and thought both were tasteful and neither were drowned in salt. I did not see a vertical skewer in the kitchen but the pastor was well-seasoned and not overly fruity. I tried the rice + beans and there was a sweet/tangy taste to the rice and beans. It wasn't bad, just interesting. Make sure you wash your meal with a deliciousssss Mexican Coke. If you want to pound tacos at a cheap price, then I don't think you can go wrong with Taqueria & Restaurant Cd. Hidalgo. So I wound up on North Clark Street again, and my lovely friend was very intrigued by "the place that sells dollar tacos" per its sign in the window that proclaims "TACOS $1.00 every day." Say what?? This place actually has a name - Taqueria & Restaurant Cd. Hidalgo (I presume "Cd." Is short for "Ciudad") that all fits on its yellow awning, but that name is a mouthful so perhaps it is best known as the Dollar Taco place. Its printed menu does not say anything about Dollar Tacos, so perhaps this is a temporary bargain. We walked up to the counter and ordered 3 tacos each. We sat down and were presented with a tray of tortilla chips, red and green salsas in squeeze bottles, and glasses of water. Our plates of tacos came out soon after. Although the diameter of the tortillas are smaller than average, the tacos consist of double tortillas and generous piles of toppings (meat, plus onion and cilantro). My two al pastor tacos and one ground beef taco were pretty flavorful, and my lovely friend enjoyed her steak tacos. The side of avocado was our minor splurge for our meal (the guac would have been more of a splurge). The place has understated ambiance other than a few decorative touches and a couple of TV's, but the crowd dining here on this particular Sunday was decent enough. I saw one dude order an enormous burrito which came along with its own steak knife. The restaurant is BYOB so grab your own beer and have a few dollar tacos here. read more

I got the chicken enchilada dinner with red sauce rice and beans AND WOW. Some of the best mexican food i've ate in a while. Very authentic and you can taste the love in the food. They serve corn masa items (tortillas, sopes, etc) made from scratch. Such a treat to have them fresh. I had the steak fajitas. It was a generous serving and prices were great. Hey guys, Beth is right, this literally IS the best place in ROGERS Park to get your taco-eating on. $1.95 tacos regular size and $1 mini tacos for the kids (or if you just want a taster portion). There's something so very incredible and superb about their steak and chicken tacos. I haven't tried the others like carnitas or el pastor but I speak very highly of the steak and chicken tacos. This place is SUCH a good deal! They have a bunch of $1 tacos, and tortas for a little over $5. The tortas are delicious, and they are also unexpectedly big. One torta will probably be enough to fill you up. 4 tacos is also just about enough to make you very full. All of the meats are good. (Initially I only noticed the taste and texture was different but I wrote it off that it was long since we had ordered). Don't suppose they've been reading my original post? Either way - I guess this is more traditional - I think a combination of red and green salsas on it, topped with queso fresco (?) and onions maybe if I remember. Another surprise - I usually never order the pollo taco anywhere with the expectation that it will be dry - but I figured worth trying something different for their $1 taco.
