My family visited Taqueria La Unica on Cinco de Mayo and it was, as you could imagine, slammed. The wait wasn't horribly long given how busy it was (approximately 15-20 minutes). I was expecting our visit to be horrible given the day but I was pleasantly surprised. The servers were on top of everything and somehow managed to take care of us and their many other tables despite the overwhelming number of people. The food here is typical of a Mexican restaurant but really good regardless. I filled up pretty quickly on chips and salsa but continued to gorge when my tacos came out. I enjoyed my meal and will be back if I'm in the area. Highly recommended. I would normally say this was a four-star restaurant however, given the situation the staff earned an extra star. read more

Ordered a deep fried chimichangas which, what was received was a Luke warm, soft product that came out of a warming tray/oven. refried beans were only lukewarm, surface cheese wasn't melted. I would rather wait for a freshly cooked meal rather than getting a meal quickly that was dished from a warming tray. Temperature of our meals would fail a health department review. read more

Well...boys and girls, women and men, THIS is an authentic, like in Mexico, restaurant. Somewhat off the beaten path in Monroe, this cafe in a strip mall has all of the Americanized tacos, burritos and fajitas, but they are different in an very nice way. First, the meat selection is more than hamburger meat and beans. Whether it is in the form of taco, burrito, or quesadilla, choose from Carne Asada (roast beef), Grilled steak (stirps of real steak), Lengua (tongue...give it a try on a taco rather than thinking about it), Beef tongue (you got it), Barbacoa (very finely chopped soft meat, very savory filling...like shortribs), soft shredded beef, Al Pastor (marinated pork that is roasted on a spit, like gyro meat, and could have a sweetness to the meat as traditionally a hunk of pineapple is put on top of the pillar of meat to drip down as it cooks..give it a sampler try), Pork, Pollo/chicken, Huevo (egg) y Jamón (ham), vetariano (you got it) and Chipotle (chicken flavored with a few types of chile peppers...not hot, just flavorful...chef's choice...ask if you must). However you get your meat, it is priced as $8.50. The meats can also be ordered as a plate meal, with sauces and sides. Also, seafood, fish filets, shrimp, oysters, octopus, served as ceviche (raw, but cooked in lime juice...VERY typico and flavorful). Very common in central and south america, esp with ocean-facing locations. Be brave...it is really refreshing. Fajjitas and sandwiches, also vegetarian plates. The burritos are HUGE and stuffed full. A for sides, there are a good variety but two stick out for me: Cebollitas (Small Onions at $3.50) and Queso Fundido (warm white cheese dip, like white velveta at $3.50) We had it with our basket of topopos...tortilla chips). Really good and the same cheese sauce is served on burritos, but you can still get red or green salsa. If you really have room for dessert (this is a major issue here as you will be stuffed with whatever you actually order) there is Flan con Rompope at $5.00. Yes, it is flan but flavored with Rompope, which is a rich, thick banana liquor. A real treat. Wait staff are running around very busy. Take your time and they are happy if you ask questions. Want to practice your Espanol? Do it and they will help you to learn those certain sentences you should know when going south...or is certain locales. Parking is out front, there is a full bar so you can get beer, wine and (I love this: Tequila at $9 a shot). Food is rich and the flavors and combinations will bring you to your knees, stuffed so much you might topple over. But everyone will laugh with you. Get down there and don't be surprised if you are the only gringos, especially during lunch. The Latinos, esp the Mexicanos, come here for home cooking. You will understand why when you go. read more

Let me start by saying that I am a Mexican food snob. Having said that, Unica used to be my favorite but lately the quality has been going down and I'm not inclined to eat there any more. Staff is always good, but I feel like the food is becoming more and more Americanized, which I don't enjoy. They have cut back on the selection of salsas brought to the table and more and more items are smothered in that cheese sauce which is NOT typical to authentic Mexican food. I came to Taqueria La Unica by total chance. Thank God it happened. My friend and I had played Eagle Chase golf course nearby and were brainstorming what food to eat after. We went from burgers, to burritos, and eventually settled on general "Mexican." We saw there were a few different restaurants in the area but thought this place looked the best. Spoiler alert - It is probably the best. I'm just going to go in list form of what was incredible about this restaurant. -The Dr. Pepper was FRESH as hell. Plus they served it in a bucket like cup so there was a ton. -Without even asking, they brought up a smorgasbord or salsas, pico de gallo, chips and queso, FO FREE. Not only was it mind-blowing that it was included in the meal, but it was mind-blowing how delicious everything was just related to the chips. -I was going to go with something like a burrito, but on my way to wash up I passed a guy who got the mixtas fajitas. Then it was an easy decision. The chicken and beef were both delicous with a crunch but also still tender and delicious. The standout was the shrimp. Never have I had shrimp in fajitas like that. 10 out of 10. My only gigantic issue with this mexican restaurant is that I live 45 minutes away from it. Visiting family and my brother recommended this spot. We pulled in and found quick parking, however there was a line out the door. Guess that's a good sign! We opted NOT to choose any appetizers since little bro warned us that we would get a lot of food. We were given fresh, warm tortillas chips and...how salsas?? Oh wow this was heaven. We tried all of them. Each delicious in their own right. Sis had a delicious chicken quesadilla, the guac was devine. Bro had the steak and shrimp skewers, wow. Charcoaled to perfection. This place is soo good and affordable. A friend recommended and so we embarked on a journey here for lunch. This place shares a gravel parking lot with other places. We came around 12:30 on a week day and couldn't find a park in the lot. We eventually found a place and went inside. As soon as we came in we were greeted. The prices were realistic and the portions large. It was clean and the staff were friendly. There is a wide selection of food options on the menu. The provide a large selection of salsas options to go with the chips when you arrive. The food was great. I had the enchiladas. The food came out at a good temperature and appeared very appeasing. We stopped here for lunch traveling through and were seated quickly. I was impressed with the variety of dips that came with the chips including cheese dip, pico de gallo, limes, two salsas and a guacamole dip.The chips were great! Our drinks came in huge plastic cup so we never needed a refill. I ordered a speedy Gonzalez and the wife had a beef burrito. The food came in about three minutes which was really fast. The food was pretty standard Mexican food, no complaints there. My only issue was these two files that kept trying to land on our food and drinks. Their priority is money, not customer service. When we had a mistake and issue with our order and asked about it she blamed us then walked away and refused to serve us. We were calm and talking normal. Then the far too young person in charge came over and could care less about our experience. We were charged $1 per kids meal for the lettuce and cheese they brought out since kids tacos only come with meat (no one said that). Just disappointed in the absolute lack of care or concern for the customers. It was alarming the attitude they had, abrasive and just downright mean. When my husband went up to pay they sneered and giggled and never even apologized. It was just sad that people would act that way over a taco.
