Hatch Sandwich Bar is a casual, locally-owned sandwich shop nestled near the town square. They offer various specials each day, along with a consistent menu, which is pretty neat to be able to have the energy and resources to have different sandwiches available. There is a decent amount of seating inside and outside. I also found the service to be warm and friendly with my food coming out promptly as it was made on the spot. I was raised in Hickory all my life, but never really ventured out to enjoy the local food scene. I am trying to do that a little bit more whenever I come back. I got the Turkey, Bacon, & Avocado sandwich without mixed greens. It was a really messy but a pretty good and filling meal. There was a bit too much avocado, but I liked the aioli as it added some flavor to the sandwich. Each sandwich also comes with a bag of chips! Overall, I would be interested in coming back and trying their other sandwiches... only if I had an out of town friend visiting. I think that the sandwiches are overpriced ($14 for a simple deli meat sandwich?). It also pains me to see their version of banh mi being priced that high as some of the best banh mi from Vietnamese-owned shops cost half that price. P.S. Time for lunch and I was able to get a parking space close to Hatch. We ordered at the counter and took a seat in the back where sandwiches were delivered about 15 minutes later. Made to order and they were busy, so this is an appropriate time. They have a cooler with beers and canned/bottled sodas. There is also a self-service soda fountain in the back. It's a nice dining area with different options for seating including a large communal table, some high tops and low tops. There might be a wifi. Restrooms were clean. Sandwiches arrived and they were great. I had chose the "Club" which was ham, turkey and bacon with appropriate fixings. Delicious, slightly messy, very yummy. We have traveled through here for decades and never ventured off the beaten path. So glad we did today and found this amazing sandwich shop! Thanks to Yelp for helping us find it. The food menu is creative and provides healthy options as well as gluten-free. We had the Pork Belly BLT and the Turkey Rueben. Delicious! We just returned and loved the pork belly BLT and the chicken salad plate with sweet potato fries and shishito peppers. The aioli it came with was fantastic. Perfect place to stop by for lunch after visiting the science center. My dad and I enjoyed a delicious Hatch Burger and the pulled pork banh mi. Today we happened upon Hatch sandwich bar - the staff was friendly - the menu looked appetizing- we had a pulled pork and grilled cheese which my sweetheart liked- but his Mac and cheese was tepid and cold in places. I had the local beef burger - the bun was soft - it was supposed to have tomatoes - someone forgot and it was hugely over salted and not the tenderest beef I've eaten- not such a great choice. We needed to grab lunch before our event started, and this was close by. It's on the corner downtown. Parking is typical for the area. You may find something in front of the building or have to walk a couple blocks. Inside is small but efficient. Seating for maybe 20. The menu board is to the right as you go in. The selection is large but not overwhelming. Everything is arranged logically, so you can zero in on what your want quickly, even for first timers. They also have a good beer and juice selection. You order at the corner of the counter. They don't ask for a name or anything. Someone just remembers who ordered what. I only noticed one hesitant order placement, but that was due to the customer not remembering what she ordered, not because of a mistake from the kitchen. I ordered the Veggie Bahn Mi sandwich and my dining partner tried the Pork Belly Cuban. Both came with a bag of chips. Their own sides were available for $3 more. All sounded good, but we were trying to stay light. It was nearly full when we got in and quickly filled up after we ordered and sat down. Our food arrived in about 10 minutes. My sandwich was very good. It has a mix of broccoli, carrots, Brussels sprouts, and cilantro, with a nice Bahn Mi sauce. The broccoli added a nice crunch giving the sandwich some weight. The bread was soft enough so it didn't squash down and fresh so it didn't crumble. I would absolutely recommend this. The Cuban was also excellent. The pork was very well made, tender and moist but not falling apart. There was a good amount of juice making the bread too soft by the end, but it was so good my dining partner just scraped the plate clean. Another winner. Something I noticed was how well the kitchen was run. I heard the staff talking several times about what was being made and what went together. It seemed very efficient and the staff experienced. What a great find in Hickory! On a road trip through NC we needed lunch. We were so lucky this was close. My husband had the recommended Pork Belly Cuban & says "It was WONDERFUL!" I had the Plate of Chicken Salad, a delightfully different flavor with cumin and added apples and sugared pecans. I ordered two sides to share: broccoli and Brussels sprouts! What an amazing find in Downtown hickory! Was in the area with family and looked for best lunch spots nearby, this small sandwich bar came up as #1, so we found street parking and ran over! They have a great selection of local and other craft brews. It was around 1pm when we got there, so the place was still relatively packed with the lunch time rush hour, but tables were starting to let up. You order your food at the counter then find your seat. The pulled pork grilled cheese was TO DIE FOR! The blend of pulled pork with the 3 cheese blend and avocado was absolutely amazing. It was saved perfectly hot, and it's got the perfect amount of hot sauce to give you a kick but not over take the flavor.
