This place is so close to our house and we finally grabbed some food last night which was amazing! It's a late night taco spot with a wide variety of different food options. I got the quesabirria tacos with consome and the meat was delicious with a lot of flavor. My boyfriend got the Al pastor alambre which was full of flavor. We both got elote which hit the spot per usual. To end the meal we each got a churro, super soft in the inside. Inside was a cute ambiance with a full house of customers, which is always a good thing. The service was efficient as we ordered to go and it was ready as soon as we got there. Parking lot is small yet always available 1 hour spots for the restaurant. Food 4/5 Elotes with lime are my go to! One of my favorite spots. I was in this neighbourhood to check out the Winter Block Party along W. Lake Street a few weeks ago. There was a food truck selling tacos and more. However, the lineup was long. Across the street was Taqueria Los Ocampo. It had places to sit down and eat. It was time for dinner for me, so I decided to come here. It's not completely clear when you first walk in as to what you need to do. A couple was ahead of me and they were also clueless. You have to walk past the kitchen area where you think you'd place your order (there's a long menu there). There's a small station on the left of the kitchen with a couple of menus behind the counter where you place your order. When it was my turn to order, two women were speaking Spanish to each other. Their conversation seemed far more important than asking me what I wanted to order. So, two minutes later, they were ready to take my order. I got these items: - Pineapple Jarritos - Spicy chicken taco - Churrasco I paid with a credit card. It was fine. I said that I was dining in. One of the women said that I could take a seat. I ended up sitting at a booth. I got a receipt with a number. My number was called out perhaps fifteen minutes later. I had received my pineapple Jarritos first, so I enjoyed sipping on it. It was cold and delicious. Once I heard my number, I didn't know where to pick it up. I went to the place where I had placed my order. To my dismay, another woman came with my food packed up as if I had ordered takeout. Um, no. I was dining in. I think the conversation between the two women was stuck in their minds that my request for dining in was ignored. I still took everything and sat back at the booth to eat. The spicy taco was a special $2 this Thursday night. I enjoyed it. The spicy chicken was yummy, although there could have been more of it. There was cilantro, tomatoes, and onions on top. There were two soft taco shells. Yum. I got the churrasco mainly because the fried egg intrigued me. It had rice, refried beans, sliced avocado, deep-fried potato wedges, a thin beef steak, and a bunch of tortillas. The tortillas were not yummy. They were hot and bendable, but they lacked interest or flavour. Even adding some of the stuff from my churrasco in a tortilla didn't do a thing. I ended up leaving them alone. I loved the refried beans, rice, and avocados. The egg was over-hard. I would have preferred the yolks more runny, but it was fine. The pounded beef was so tough to cut through with a plastic knife, let alone eat. When I could chew parts of it, it was flavourful. I'd come back for tacos and some sides, but it wasn't my favourite place for Mexican food. I have had better. I ordered two Huarache (one shredded chicken and one Mexican style pork) to go through DoorDash. I put my order in a few hours ahead of time, but it still arrived warm so that was a huge plus! The order came with four (four!!!) different dip options which was super cool. The pros: HUGE. You definitely only need one per person. The meat was very well seasoned and covered in toppings. I'd definitely order the pork one again!! The cons: this is pretty greasy (but that's pretty typical of this dish). The real unfortunate part for me was that all four of the sauces were not great. Three of them were way too spicy (and I have a low spice tolerance so take that with a grain of salt) and the 4th was a cilantro sauce which I am not a fan of at all. The flavor of the rice was decent actually, but I just don't prefer it prepared however they do it. There's always pepitas in it which I've never heard of before. But if you're into that cool. You can not go wrong with Taqueria Los Ocampos- big delicious portions at great prices and the salsa verde is amazing (ask for extra!)! i've had the tacos (lengua, quesabirria, carnitas, asada, etc) and all are fantastic every time plus the consume that comes with the quesabirria is so flavorful and comes piping hot. This is real Mexican food made by real Mexicans! I judge Chinese restaurants by the blackhead count (The # of actual Chinese people in the place eating...the higher the # all but guarantees the food will be great) and I am applying the same rule here. Every time I walk in here, there is only 1 non-Mexican in the place and that is me! Given that ratio, you know the food is going to be great! Although it's always busy around meal times, there is a parking lot off the busy street which is a big plus in my book. Also, the ladies that work here are very helpful to people like me that aren't Mexican food experts. We may not speak the same language but they are able to make their recommendations known to me and they are never wrong! I usually get the platillo gustilo or #21. This seems to translate into a "plate of meat" accompanied by some avocado, tomato, lettuce, onion, and a slab of queso blanco. There are at least a dozen meat choices so decisions are tough and they always have offal on offer such as tripe and tongue if that is your thing. One of the best things about this platillo is the 5 thick, steaming hot homemade corn tortillas that come with it. I'm a low carb advocate but trying to resist these is always a complete fail. On Saturday and Sunday, they have 2 specials that I have yet to try. One is lamb barbacoa and the other is goat stew. Next chance I get those will be my choice since today I noticed that about 75% of the customers in the place seemed to be eating those. There are so many great authentic Mexican places along Lake Street and this ranks among them. Finally though, one thing that sets this place apart is that it is also a Yelp cash back spot. Great authentic Mexican food! The menu is pretty big, a lot of dishes to offer. You can order pretty much any dish with any kind of meat which is nice. They prepare each meat 3-4 different ways, for example you can get pollo (chicken) - chicken tinga, chicken and potatoes, marinated chicken, etc. They have elote!!! My favorite. I ordered an authentic chicken tinga taco and an americanized chicken tinga taco. The difference is the authentic taco is topped with onions, cilantro and comes with a lime wedge and radishes. The americanized taco is topped with lettuce, tomato and sour cream. They offer two sauces which automatically comes with every dish, both are kinda spicy the red being more spicy. I also ordered horchata which is rice milk, always good! The food is decently priced. There was not very much interaction with the staff as this is more of a fast food place. The restaurant was clean and I did notice after people were done eating the staff came out and cleaned the tables right away so other customers could use them. How have I never heard of this place - this would have been so useful yo know existed for all those late night weekends. The food is bomb! The tacos range but start at $3 each and there is a variety of options (honestly my mouth is watering just thinking about them). This is the best taqueria in Minneapolis. I'm lucky to live 2 blocks away and thus have been there close to 100 times... yikes... I always get al pastor (nice and spicy marinated pork) but their carnitas, chipotle chicken, and picadillo are favorites of my friends and roommates. Some of their best options include quesadilla, tacos, sincronizada, and burritos. The quesadilla is more like what Taco Bell would call a chalupa. It comes served with lots of yummy fresh veggies (lettuce, tomato, radish) cotija, and crema. It's probably the best bang for your buck-- $4-5 for a decent meal. If you're looking for what is commonly called a quesadilla, go for the sincronizada. It is even more food but can get a little greasy. It comes served with guac, sour cream, lettuce, and tomato. Tacos come served in 2 corn tortillas with cilantro, lime wedges, onions, and radishes and they really are to die for. They are especially great if you want to try a few different meats. The burritos are huge but come with a side of guac and chips which are a nice touch. I'm a heat fiend so I always ask for their avocado sauce-- its super spicy and creamy green in color. I got the Carnitas Tacos the number 1 - 3 carnitas tacos with cilantro/onion/limes and beans and rice on the side. My carnitas was seasoned well..maybe I got the end of the batch, even though I had very good portions, I felt the carnitas was at the 'bottom of the pot' as it was chopped pretty finely. If this is how its served dis regard. If not I felt there could be bigger pieces...but again, good portion sizes. 2. Beef Tacos Combo- same thing above for sides but with beef. I thought the meat would be 'heartier' but mincing the meat must be how they present it. I was not as impressed with this one- a little dry/overcooked/lost the juiciness. This San Diego girl is ALWAYS on a hunt for some delicious, authentic Mexican food and I think I found my spot here in Minneapolis. First off, they have a parking lot, which is a definite score in my book! Second of all, they had so many authentic meal options from your traditional street tacos to menudo (my absolute favorite soup) to enchiladas to tortas (Mexican sandwich). I didn't know where to start! I ended up ordering the menudo, which came with a side of your choice. I went with the tostada (basically a gigantic tortilla chip with refried beans, lettuce, queso fresco, avocado, onions, and tomatoes). The menudo was delicious with tastes that are reminiscent of my Abuelo's dish. The only complaint I had that it didn't have hominy in their dish. My partner in crime ordered the enchiladas with green sauce with shredded beef and he was very content with his choice! And because we didn't have nearly enough food, we ordered an al pastor taco just to try! The flavors of the meat were so delicious and the taco was topped with radishes, cilantro, and onions. They had quite a bit of sauces to choose from and we went with the avocado hot sauce. Usually avocado hot sauces are a little milder in spice, but this one had a delicious kick! My local prospects are looking up, for mexican/tex-mex food, now that I've tried Los Ocampo! I will admit that I haven't searched real hard, but Pepitos left me a little fearful for the MSP version of one of my favorite fast foods. I got excited about Los Ocampo after checking out the reviews on trusty old yelp and, have to say, I was not disappointed. At first glance, the facility looked a bit polished for what I expect from a place that serves down and dirty tacos, but my suspicions were quickly washed away. My tacos came out topped with only cilantro, onion, and radish... the perfect taco toppings. The corn tortillas were satisfyingly earthy and the unidentified salsa verde had a little kick to it. The carnitas was perfectly tender, although slightly bland, and the al pastor, oddly red, was tangy and flavorful. 3 lime wedges provided the "cherry" to top off my taco trifecta. The side beans and rice were topped with just a little bit of grated queso and there were vegetables peppered throughout the rice... yum. I'm excited to go back and try some of the other taco meat toppings and various other menu items. They have Jarritos sodas (excuse me, "pops") for those craving the, now rare, real sugar sodas, and I think I even spotted a Mexican Coke if you want to get an idea of what real Coca-Cola used to taste like before the corn syrup apocalypse. Oddly enough, I was distracted by the American wrestling being broadcast on "Mun2" (The Telemundo version of MTV2?) from the 2 TV's inside. Love this place! Best Mexican food that I've found in the Twin Cities. I've had the chicken tinga enchiladas with green sauce, the huarachazo, and the veg quesadilla combos, and loved them all. It looks like it would be an innocent avocado crema, but holy cats it is HOT and so, so yummy. The first time I ever ate here was actually quite the memorable experience, as it fell on the day I closed on my first house. It was an exciting but stressful day, and that evening my boyfriend and I both packed our compact cars as full of boxes as we could get them, to bring our first load of stuff over to the new house. Exhausted and starving, we stopped at Los Ocampo on Lake & Chicago along the way to get some takeout. After unloading our cars, we perched on the kitchen counters (as we were still furniture-less) to eat. It was then that we realized that they had forgotten to give us utensils, and we hadn't brought any over yet. So we ended up eating enchiladas, rice and beans with our fingers like savages. Actually we first tried to fashion a utensil from the top of a beer can, but quickly realized that was a major dental injury waiting to happen, so we abandoned that strategy. We eat here about once every week or two now, always at the Lake & Chicago location, which makes for some highly entertaining people-watching late at night. Thanks to all of the great reviews, I got to enjoy a dinner that reminded me of my lonestar state! I ctrl+f'ed "authentic" and to my surprise, it was included in many reviews. I became an anxious skeptic! Overwhelmed with the selection of menu items and accompanying meats, I just told the awesome, friendly cashier to put 4 of her favorite tacos together for me. She was really surprised and her hesitation was followed with a couple "are you sure" and "is that okay". She got me the: 1. Suadero (intermediate piece of meat next to the udders) - Great! 2. Chipotle chicken - Great! 3. Buche (pig stomach) - Interesting / pretty good 4. Steak - Good The tortillas, meats, onions, cilantro, lime and salsa truly reminded me of the low-key taco stops in dallas and austin. An awesome surprise considering how far we are from the third coast. I ate 1/3 of my friend's quesadilla which was okay. I think I was too into my tacos to be giving any real attention to the quesadilla (maybe that doesn't make sense, or you don't understand true love :p ). The horchata was buena, and their cups are Texas-sized so plan accordingly! The platanos fritos were eh. The server will call your number out in spanish, so pay attention to that. The menu is written up on the wall (in Spanish and English), with large pictures of each dish to let you know what you're getting into. It's a good value - the burrito combo meal was about $9, which came w/ chips and guac (albeit a tiny side order) and a soda. Being from the DC area which doesn't have a large Mexican population, I never knew what good Mexican food tasted like... Now I know. The torta cubana here was amazing as were the tacos. Had the tongue and cheek tacos and yes. YES. Come here. read more
