It's not wet, it has sauce on top, which is the way it's supposed to be as far as I'm concerned. Salsa is your choice and avocado wedges are more than welcome a compliment. They create a perfect harmony with the already tasty base. Depending on your spiciness preference, the staff will hook you up with a proper extra salsa (and on your table if you want more). Basic güero dish that will leave an impression without a doubt. Staff... Cordial, attentive and not intrusive. They made sure I got what I need, asked how I liked it and left me to eat in peace. Can you ask for more? Amenities... ... Which means "bathroom". I feel like they let me use the staff bathroom which I consider a credit to their CS. Music... We came on a weekday during lunchtime and to our surprise the service was moderate. Waiter was friendly when we would ask for certain things. Food was delicious. My gordita was a bit hard on the ends which made it hard to cut but overall it was delicious. A gentleman was singing as well which made the experience nice as we were celebrating a birthday. I would have given them the 5 start but the single beer is hot. I believe they sell so much the fridge don't have time to get them cold. You can't buy happiness, but you can buy carnitas. This place is known for their carnitas. I'm a fan of maciza (clean solid meat). The carnitas here is always clean and not greasy. They also have surtido which is different cuts of the carnitas. They being out two hot sauces for you to put on your food. I suggest you use both. The green one is mild with lots of flavor , and the red one brings on the heat. Carnitas are fried pork meat. When in the mood for carnitas and a good Michelada this is your place. They also have live Mexican regional music playing in the background. It can get a little loud, When you arrive they'll help you find a table if you are eating in. Note that this place closes early. Don't come in the afternoon and expect it to be open. I was feeling like menudo today, but I found out it doesn't have hominy in it. That's a big no for me. So instead I had the quesadillas. This quesadilla is huge and everything in it comes together nicely. In the past I've had the carnitas nachos. Those are always good. I would suggest to grupo one of their Micheladas. These are always good. My favorite is with a Pacifico. You can never go with wrong with a Pacifico. This establishment does not have regular restrooms. I would have never known about this place had not a friend taken me there. I was with my friend from Mexico and he said it reminded him of the places he eats in Mexico, in a good way. It's an awesome find. It's like you stumbled upon a well-kept secret. It's located in a light industrial area. There's a small parking lot. If it's full, there's not much street parking available. There wasn't a single empty parking spot on the entire block. Anyway, the food is off the charts, and the prices are very reasonable. The tacos are just $2 and they do not skimp on the ingredients. I had a breakfast burrito jam-packed with chorizo. Again, they don't skimp on the ingredients. It looked small, but it was densely packed with spicy goodness. My friend says their hibiscus agua fresca is really good. I'll have to try it next time. There's an outdoor patio with plenty of seating or you can take your order to go. Definitely bookmark this place for when you're in the area and want some incredibly delicious and authentic Mexican food. read more

The Mexican food here is one of two reasons I'm in El Monte, or "the mountain" (misnomered like so many places in LA as there are none around here and on most days lousy air quality obscures any view of the San Gabriels further north). In this area there many very highly rated folky mex places, and so little time to try more than a few of them. (Folky means better speak some Spanish or you'll get what you get. This place is for real.) So let's get right to it before I go on and on about matters of personal importance, the second reason I'm in this town. The carnitas is their headliner and is so good, it qualifies as one of my come to jesus experiences. It's worth going out of your way to see how good it can be when done right, as pork shoulder is a staple in most mex places but tends to be stringy and dry unless the cook knows how to do it. At periban someone in the kitchen really understands how because this is the most tender, flavorful braised pork shoulder I can remember. I had the basic burrito, no rice, and it was easily enough for lunch and dinner's worth of protein. Outstanding. The people here are kind and help you order if your spanish is a bit slow and uncertain, or if you're ordering something new to extend your lexicon. But make no mistake, Periban is an immersive Latin experience with absolutely great food. El Monte has an earlier history that I wanted to revisit, which had caused me to come here regularly some years ago when I first moved to SoCal. I had fallen in with a group of freaks who frequented a place here called the El Monte Legion Stadium, likely few of you have heard of this but perhaps it's something to know. Originally a large high school indoor sports arena for about 3,000, it was converted into a venue for music in the late 40s. All manner of early 50s rockers performed here, from Chuck Berry to Stevie Wonder later on. I of course was little more than a child then, but in the late 60s music of an entirely different group of musicians arrived, such as Big Brother, the Dead and my own fave... Frank Zappa. Of course Zappa, a pioneer jazz/rocker rejected by the merely weekend hip, brought along assorted similarly weird musicians from time to time like Captain Beefheart, and in a weak moment for him, Ry Cooder. You wouldn't see this kind of thing on Sunset Blvd because places like the Whiskey were after acts with a larger mainstream following. What went on here at the El Monte Legion "Stadium" was way past anything groups like the Doors were capable of, and given how strange the onstage antics of Jim Morrison could get, you can imagine what the Legion Stadium shows were like. So there you have it, too bad you missed the music but you can still come for the mexican food if you're ever driving out east of LA on the I-10. read more
