I don't eat at many Mexican restaurants because I am extremely picky and the best Mexican food IMO is found at my grandmas house. This place is decent though. Prices are inflated because of the area (Solano) but there is a mostly Latino staff in the kitchen. Maybe I am biased because the style of this Mexican food is from my family's hometown but I thought it was pretty good! I don't like tacos from restaurants since the tortillas don't absorb the flavor as well as in the taco trucks but this asada taco was alright! (3$ taco Tuesday special) The decorations are well thought out and not trying to do too much and the ambiance is bumping!

Well we read the Yelp reviews so we gave it a try. We had a chicken burrito and it was just ok. We opted for the extra charge of guacamole and felt it wasn't worth it. We asked for whole pinto beans but it sure seemed like refried beans.

Recommended, will be back, and the food was great! Sopes just might be my favorite Mexican dish, so I ordered the Sopes plate with carne asada, hot chocolate because it's been extremely chilly as of late, and a strawberry margarita. Hot and cold drinks together are the best of both worlds. It could be snowing outside and I'd still get a cold beverage. Love the clay mugs the hot chocolate came in. It kept hot while I focused on my marg. I thought I'd be able to body my plate because i was so hungry, but I ended up taking a sope home for leftovers, which was just as delicious the next day. Something really nice happened here. Apparently my margarita tasted too much like lime to who I assume is the owner, and he came by my table with another margarita on the house. That was thoughtful and something my friend and I really appreciated because who doesn't like a free drink? But seriously, it's the customer service behind serving something up to a standard that one feels confident in that really stood out. This looks like a popular spot. There were a couple people inside when I arrived, and several pick up orders. I love this area, or rather this small strip of restaurants and other stores along Solano Avenue.

Talavera is a great Mexican restaurant located on Solano Ave. It gets busy during certain hours but fortunately there is plenty of seating both inside and outside of the restaurant. The simple process of ordering the food at the register, taking a number, and the time to prepare the food is fast. All the food the kitchen made looked amazing. I ordered: Ahogada Torta: this is a pulled pork torta covered in a delicious rojo or red sauce, topped with avocado, onions, and jalapeños. Delicious and satisfying. Can't wait to go back to try some of the other delicious offerings

We were looking for a half way point to meet a friend for dinner and landed on Taqueria Talavera as our destination, because who doesn't love Mexican food? This is a casual and small restaurant that also has outdoor seating for warm summer evenings... which this year are a mythical event. So we ate inside. diners place orders with the cashier, and grab a number to take to their selected table. Some tables are by the open kitchen so you can watch the chefs work their magic! We ordered the Talavera Nachos with black beans and a side of the most delicious guac to share. Nachos were layered with the good stuff so every chip had something on it. Yum! Friend ordered the three taco plate with both beef options and one chorizo. Husband ordered the shrimp taco, and I had the "custom" plate and selected the pork carnitas and two chicken tacos--this came with rice and beans--I chose refried beans. I split this plate with my husband. Everything we had was slammin' good! Carnitas were well seasoned, crunchy bits on the edges and juicy otherwise, with just enough succulent fat. I tasted the chicken from a taco, and it was moist and flavorful--but hubby ate the tacos. Our friend devoured her tacos and loved each one. The shrimp taco looked and smelled amazing, and I was too full to get a taste, so have to trust it was as good as my husband said it was. Only downfall was it fell apart when he tried to eat it like a taco, and ended up using a fork--but who really cares about that?! We also had a Mexican hot chocolate and Mexican mocha, which were yummy. We looked at the breakfast menu and will be back soon -- maybe today-- to try some of the delights! I might add, although small, this place does some business! Lots of take out orders. Sorry for the pics -- forgot to take them before we swooped in!

Taqueria Talavera was good! I'm a burrito person and decided to try a different type of burrito instead of my regular carne asada. I decided to go with the specialty Mole burrito and it was spicy and flavorful, I was shocked how good it was. They had music playing also, so while you wait for your food you can could enjoy the music. The service was fast and efficient although I showed up close to closing time, I would for sure eat here again.

Found this spot while taking a walk and decided to grab a quick bite! Ordered some conchas, a chile relleno plate, chicken enchiladas with salsa verde, and a horchata latte. Chile relleno plate was okay! Definitely filling however it wasn't MY favorite.. I definitely enjoyed my boyfriend's chicken enchiladas a lot better. Horchata latte was a little too grainy for my liking, and conchas were actually great! For sure coming back for breakfast to try their chilaquiles and other drinks next time! Workers were very kind and helpful :)

Platanos with black beans (sour cream on the side)
    Marc B.

Really amazing platanos (plantains) and excellent tacos de papa (potato tacos). You can order the platanos as a side or a dish with black beans (and sour cream). When I'm in Berkeley, I try to at least stop off for side of platanos. Many Mexican restaurants are getting on-board the potato taco train, and I couldn't be happier. Fried hard shell with a mash of potatoes inside and cabbage, crema and pico de gallo on top. Yummmmm! Once you order, there are a good number of spots inside. If it's nice out, there's plenty of outdoor seating. They bring your food to the table once it's ready.

Looking for a new taqueria in the East Bay? Taqueria Talavera on Solano Ave. fills any craving! Quick and friendly service (order at register), fresh ingredients, vibrant atmosphere, seating indoor/outdoors, parking, delicious food for affordable value and filling portions! Not only do they have a breakfast menu and celebrate Taco Tuesday, but offer an eclectic variety of options including a few of my personal favorites: chicken fajitas, torta or the quesadilla with any meat, wet burrito, and of course, their guac & chips. They also have a special menu for the kiddos, veggie options, refreshing agua frescas, beer, wine/sangria, and have beautifully made desserts..the chocolate flan, chef's kiss!

We are in search of a Baja fish taco that is satisfying since both of the places we loved either closed or stopped serving the baja style. We went to Mersea earlier for the views and to check out TI and it was uninspiring so we rambled back to the east bay and decided to try Mercado. Reviews looked good (thanks y'all, I appreciate you) and despite a few misses on the baja taco (according to some reviews) we decided to take a run at it. The man was feeling jaded after the am stop and wasn't going for the fish, I stayed neutral...no one wants their little taco loving heart broken twice in one day...ultimately, he decided to try the fish taco plate with 1 baja and one grilled. I had the poblano mole tacos w/chicken. We shared the guacamole with chips. I had cafe de olla (it is called something else here) and he had the mocktail with the ginger beer. The ordering at the counter wasn't my favorite but the spot was pretty quiet for a Friday midday and the service was still exceptional. They were attentive and responsive. I would definitely go back at the same time cuz I don't like crowds. On to the food. Dayum! Everything was good. Well seasoned, beautifully plated, and sufficient serving size. I pigged out. For real...I waddled out of that joint. Brought every drop of the leftovers home so I could have the chocolate custard (DAYUM) for dessert with the remnants of my coffee. Him: he preferred the baja style to the grilled fish. As some others have said, it can fall apart (really stuffed with goodness) but he didn't want his fixins on the side. VERDICT: he'll be back for that taco. Me: I enjoyed the mole but the chicken in chunks didn't work for me. I would have preferred it shredded. I'll try something else next time and there will be a next time. Oh, and the black beans and green rice were flavorful as well. Standing order: guacamole and chips Cafe Chocolate custard... What? No pics? Come on now. I wasn't thinking 'bout y'all when my food came. Go take your own pics.

My party ordered the verde enchiladas, vegetarian burrito, platanos, and flan. Enchiladas - filled with chicken and the sauce was spicy. However, it wasn't very flavorful, just hot. The rice and beans were very disappointing. Bland and the cheese on the beans was cold, stiff, and clumped. Vegetarian burrito - Delicious! No complaints. Platanos - Served over refried beans with a super unappetizing sauce splashed on top. The taste was just okay but I've had better. Flan - definitely a different texture than the average flan. Overall, it wasn't something to drive home about but it was cool. Overall, the lunch wasn't bad but it wasn't great nor was ti worth almost $80. I may come back to try the tacos, which seem to be a top seller, but I'll hold off on anything else.

Both were excellent and paired very well with their salsa. Carne asada was cooked and cut perfectly, and tasted much better than when I had it in burritos in the past. Al pastor is very authentic and tastes better than most you can find in the area. Generous amount of onions (and some pineapple for the pastor). I really really enjoyed this, and I'm happy to have this option here in my neighborhood. Only negative is that their tortillas seem to collapse under the general sauciness. I usually prefer to have my salsa on the side, so maybe that's on me. Came out to about $15 for the three tacos which is pretty pricey. However, you do get some chips and salsa for free, and the quality of the food is pretty high. I'm reasonably happy to pay this price to support a nice establishment in my community. The place is clean and recently renovated, with a fairly friendly staff willing to accommodate customizations and requests.
