I've ordered their food for years. Always had great plates. Not mushy food. Always plated well with thought. The past few months everything is slopped together. Watery. Runny. Mushy. Jamie W. and I had been having major hankerings for Mexican food, but our problem was that we are 'straight-for-the-chips' type of eaters. It didn't matter if they were good or bad. We just couldn't help ourselves since they're usually complimentary and often replenished without provocation. We were strolling on Solano Avenue when we noticed how popular this inviting place was with the overflow diners sitting outside at patio tables. Could we behave ourselves in a taqueria where all the tables were filled with tacos, burritos, and enchiladas? We tried mightily, we did. Jamie and I decided to split two dishes. The first was the $9 Ensalada Verde (yep, a green salad), which turned out to be quite an abundant platter of romaine, jicama, carrots, and radish doused in a lime vinaigrette and topped with avocado slices and toasted pumpkin seeds (photo: http://bit.ly/2HLcB4j). The execution sounded simple and it was, but it was also awesome in a fresh, no-fuss kind of way. The second was the $12.90 Plato Vegetariano, really more of a sampler plate anchored by grilled vegetables, mostly squashes and peppers, seasoned with garlic, herbs, and spices. Three types of beans are served: pinto, black, and refried. There was no Sophie's Choice situation here, as the three were most compatible on the plate. Wanted to try this taqueria for a while. Its tropical vibe and plantains on the menus drew me in. However the food and service left me wanting more. I had a vegetarian plate and agua Fresca for $32. The plate came with 3 types of beans and a small helping of grilled vegetables. Plantains were late and Fresca was not what I ordered. Came to Talavera on a Thursday evening for dinner and they were somewhat busy, but the crowd started to die down by about 7:30/8:00pm. We ordered lime margaritas, which were surprisingly good (not too sweet, as at some other places), although $10 per glass is a bit steep, even for the Bay. I ordered a beef chimichanga, which came with black beans and rice and my friend ordered chicken flautas. A little bummed that the flautas did not come with rice or beans, but she ordered a separate plate of rice (yes, they did charge for it).The chimichanga was delicious! Very filling with the rice and black beans. Service was a bit slow, given the dinner hour, but our waitress was very sweet. It gets windy outside in the evenings, so bring a jacket! Some months ago I ordered a Plato of chicken carne asada w/o cilantro or onions for pickup. Picked up, sat down to have my dinner, it was covered in both cilantro and onions. I called and let them know of the mistake. They said they'd give me a credit. Since this is a restaurant in our neighborhood and one that I'd like to support, I let the credit slide but I've never ordered pickup from them again. I want to say that their carne asada is my favorite by far, as long as it's not covered in cilantro or raw onions. Today my friend wanted to meet at Talavera for lunch. I figured I'd chance ordering my favorite meal. When my meal arrived, it was again covered in cilantro and raw onions. I pointed out to the server that I had ordered it without cilantro or raw onions. they promptly took the plate back and a few moments later returned with one appearing not covered in cilantro or onions. What they had done was scrap the offending meal off the plate (not very well at all, still a lot of cilantro and onions remained on the plate) and reused the plate. I had to pick through my meal to avoid eating cilantro or raw onions. I was embarrassed because I had to pick through my meal like an 5 year old. Apparently saving washing on more dish is more important than giving me the meal I asked and paid for. Note to self, I'll never go there again. Sad because I'll have to find another restaurant that makes chicken carne asada like they do and I can't help but take this personally. Got me twice. SMH read more

My friend and I came here before a Cal game and the food was delicious. I ordered the Chile verde burrito and my friend ordered the Chile colorado. I thought the Chile verde was just right for me, tangy with a lot of flavor. My friend on the other hand thought her food was just okay, she thought it was missing something flavor wise. I also ordered a side of large chips and salsa but their spicy salsa was kind of disappointing because it was not that spicy. They do offer a variety of other salsas as well. The employees were very nice and the food came out pretty quickly. Parking wasn't too bad as we parked a few blocks away and walked. I was drawn to Talavera by their menu's description of the mole... "Best Mole in 40 years" (East Bay Express). I have to agree. The Poblano Chicken mole is one of my favorite dishes, period. The mole is dark brown, chocolatey, spicy with a touch of cinnamon. The flavor is perfectly balanced. Make sure to order a couple more corn tortillas. The three that come with the dish are usually not enough for me. Over the years, I have tried other things on their menu such as their burritos and enchiladas. You really can't go wrong here. SERVICE: the service is a bit slow because it's busy (and busy is usually a good sign!) and it's more of a "mom & pop" joint that adds to the authenticity of the overall food and experience. The guacamole was smooth and perfectly seasoned with pico de gallo on the side. We also had the platanos maduros on top of black beans and crema. Very nice. The real prize were the tacos dorados with carnitas. OUTSTANDING all the way. HUGE portions of food! One of BEST tacos dorados I've had. The shell was fried just perfectly to give it a crunch but not fall apart all over the place. The carnitas were delicious. My friend was eating light and had the sopa de pollo. She lives it. We had the chocoflan for desert and it was almost as good as mine and mine is excellent so ***** for the dessert as well. Personally, this place is perfect. Took my mom out here for a taco lunch. Got the 3 taco plate (we chose Carne Asada, Pollo Asado, and Al Pastor), a small chips and guacamole, and to top it off, a flan and a Jamaica. The chips and guacamole were really good, really well seasoned. The chicken and steak tacos were good, but my favorite was by far the Al Pastor. The Adobo sauce was delicious! A bit surprising, but the best thing I think we ate was the flan. I don't know how to describe it other than perfect. I'm surprised to see that I've never reviewed Taqueria Talavera. We've ordered takeout from them for years and were faithful customers all through the pandemic. My default order has been the Chile Colorado plate, typically with pork, black beans and corn tortillas. It's spicy, very flavorful and quite filling. Most recently, I decided to change things up and get a burrito. Although the mole burrito is one of the highlights of their menu, the person who took my order recommended the barbacoa burrito instead. He was absolutely right: the slow-cooked lamb was delicious, and it's not at all typical to find lamb burritos in Berkeley. By the way, ordering over the phone might involve some patience. If they're very busy, they won't pick up. If they're mildly busy, they will pick up, but they'll leave the receiver on the counter until there's a break at the register. Tuesdays are especially problematic because of their taco specials (which are very popular!). Pick-up can also be time-consuming: Talavera really does get busy at times. read more

I came in for a quick taco, and decided to have a Sangria too. The taco was phenomenal! I gobbled it up a little too fast. The flavors and textures were really amazing. I didn't like the Sangria, it was way too weak. I poured myself a cup of water but didn't drink it cause it tasted like dish soap. I've actually come here before and had really great experiences. I almost left today before ordering cause the counter person was on the phone and ignored me. It sounded like more of a personal call than anything, but I wasn't there for the whole conversation. I ordered two burritos over the phone, it was a simple order and I received a number for pick up. 20 mins later when I arrived it wasn't ready and I had to repeat the order. When I got home they had completely messed it up. Wrong beans, rice in one when it should have been in the other burrito and the wrong tortilla. This is not the first time either. I have lived in the East Bay for about a year, and I have been on the hunt for a delicious Michelada. I FOUND ONE!!!!!!! We got takeout over the weekend! I was impressed with the restaurant on many different levels. The ambiance is beautiful inside and out. Once it is safe to eat places again, I will be frequenting this place. The menu was extensive and had all the things I would want. They gave us four different salsas to try and all of them were delicious. I ordered the crunchy tacos and my best friend ordered the baja tacos. We both loved our orders. After working in the restaurant industry for ten years prior to the pandemic, customer service is always something I pay attention to. The staff here was extremely helpful and friendly. They even joked around with us a bit! I truly appreciate businesses that make it clear that they care about their job and have integrity in it. The young lady taking orders is condescending and not very hepfull with people. They have a system of credit card paying in which instead of just inserting your credit card, sliding it or using your credit card chip you have to dial a number which some people find unusual and need help figuring it out and this lady will not make or try to help you in any way, she acts like a robot saying and repeating : "dial one", " dial two" with no eye contact and a look of annoyance in her face. read more

Another win for Solano Ave, which I maintain has some of the most consistently solid cuisine in the East Bay. I'd walked past Talavera several times along this strip, but only recently stopped in for lunch. Although nothing fancy, they have a spectacular menu of well executed dishes that are clearly a step above standard Mexican fare. My chicken quesadilla was perfectly prepared, a decent portion, and accompanied by a chipotle crema and an outstanding cilantro pesto that I'm hoping to recreate at home. Named after the beautiful tiles that comprise the various mosaics on the wall, this is an aesthetically pleasing corner Mexican taqueria that is a bit more special, not only in the decor, but the cleanliness and attention to detail. Two types of mole offered (the one that titillates me is the guajillo chile with pumpkin seeds.. will try next time); a classic poblano with Mx chocolate is the other option. I ordered the Talavera nachos at 2120 the other night, and such flavor, all atop a bed of non-greasy, light, very crispy, fresh tortilla chips. Nachos were special in that the layering of thinly sliced jalapeno mixed together with nice bits of relish and black beans allowed me to really taste the ingredients....and, of course, that yummy cheese and sour cream! I added my own aguacate and diced tomatoes to it.... A rather large meal (couldn't finish it) at $6.50 Given that I ordered this late, 10 minutes before they were closing...
