Got the coffee ice cream it was good it has actual pieces of coffee bean. Tried a lot of the other flavors which were different, but that doesn't really mean they were really good...I could eat some of the other flavors but I don't think I'd buy them lol. Oh and if you're like me and you just love the ice-cream....try not to get the cone. The waffle cone is good as far a waffle cone goes but it takes away from the taste of the ice cream. But if you like waffle cones you'll probably be fine with it. read more

Great alternative to waiting in the sometimes-ridiculously-long line at Ici. The flavors don't change much here, so it's nice to know I can look forward to having my favorite flavor, Sweet Corn, upon arrival. Don't get me wrong, the fact that a lot of the flavors are consistently available doesn't mean they're conventional. Far from it. There's all sorts of exotic combos, like black sesame, minted lime agave, Turkish coffee, plum ginger; i mean, the world in an assortment of sweet frozen cream at your finger tips. There's always a few enticing flavors that seduce me into having a taste, just a tiny one. Then I ultimately decide on the ever-reliable Sweet Corn, you know, the safe flavor you know and trust; the one you think is least likely to let you down. Kinda like deciding who to marry... This place is always packed, and that is not a bad thing!!! Innovative flavors make waiting in line almost necessary, because it definitely takes some time to figure out which flavor to go with!!! Say goodbye to the days of plain and simple days of ice cream flavors...when the combo of strawberry chocolate and vanilla making up Neopolitan was complex. Sure there are some great ice cream shops in the city [Humphrey's, Bi-Rite, Mitchell's] but welcome to Tara's Organic Ice Cream. Check the Facebook page for flavors offered that day. Out of all the flavors she makes, I'm surprised it changes daily. She is super friendly and encourages you too sample as much as you want. I'm always wary of sampling too many kinds for fear of inconveniencing them, but you don't have to worry about that here. I ended up settling for a small cup with two flavors: Strawberry Agave Sorbet and Pear Ginger Agave Sorbet. The girl had a small cup also with two flavors: Edamame Lemon and Lavender. The girl and I are both lavender fiends and we have never tasted anything more delicious than Tara's ice cream. It is amazing. I will just get a honkin' scoop of that next time!! read more

An update: I came here while on the Paleo challenge because of their Agave Sorbet - made with Agave instead of sugar! I feel like it qualifies as a "sometimes" paleo food. I got the minted lime and hibiscus agave sorbets. Both were delicious and refreshing! The hibiscus was slightly sweeter, but bother were amazing. Even though the paleo challenge is over I would definitely get the sorbet again! and again and again and again... note: I actually got the sorbet at the Oakland location, but I feel like the two places are essentially the same... read more

Mmmm.... Smooth, light and crisp. I have a soft spot on my tongue for herb flavored ice creams, and Tara's sage ice cream really hit the spot. I tried the Garam Masala ice cream as well, and was very impressed. The agave nectar vegan sorbets were okay - I think agave doesn't mix well with sorbet (too sickly sweet), especially when you're using already sweet fruits like mango (where you shouldn't have to add anything except water and maybe a stabilizer). The only other ice cream I've had recently that's so satisfying is the Sketch fresh mint leaf ice cream (fantastic). I had this a day after giving ici another shot, and this just confirmed that ici is totally overrated. read more

Been here a number of times and I have never been dissapointed! It is hard to find a place that actually does unique ice cream flavors well. The customer service is great! There are just so many flavors I never know which one to get. They let you have free samples which is always a plus. Great place to go to if your sick of the Ici line and so so ice cream. Has not been that busy everytime I have gone and they're open til 10pm which is great if you have an ice cream craving after dinner. Go to their facebook page for their daily selection of ice cream! Mmm... ice cream! I've been wanting to try Tara's for a while now. I've never had agave sweetened sorbet before, and she has so many interesting ice cream flavors like lemongrass (which I love, but I realize not necessarily in ice cream) and bay laurel (just tasted creamy). My friends liked the Tasmanian Honey flavor, and I tried a bit of the Lavender which was nice and strong. I also sampled the lemon blueberry, which is a great combination, but wasn't lemony enough for me. I ended up getting a medium black sesame cone for myself, with a big scoop of black sesame ice cream and two smaller scoops of mango agave sorbet and the strawberry balsamic ice cream. If you like black sesame you should definitely get that cone because you can taste it in there, and the black sesame ice cream itself was fantastic. Has that slightly savory taste of toasted seeds but the sweetness of a dessert. Now, the strawberry balsamic. It has wet swirls of balsamic vinegar, the strength of which brought out the flavors of the strawberry ice cream. This flavor is awesome. I've had strawberry balsamic ice cream other places and was really underwhelmed. Here you can taste both flavors complimenting each other, neither gets lost, and it's fun getting different amounts of vinegar and ice cream on your tongue to play with the combination. On the lighter side, you have the sorbets. These are not as smooth as the ice creams and can break apart in chunks, but that doesn't stop them from being refreshing. I enjoyed the mango. Other flavors available were lime and banana. I went on a hot Sunday evening and there was a line out the door. It took awhile to get to the front because people sample so many flavors, but take the opportunity to figure out what you want to sample! And fail to convince yourself that one scoop is enough. They've also opened a location in the Temescal area of Oakland. Which I will be visiting when I'm in the area! read more

I CRAVE Tara's Ice Cream! I DREAM of Tara's Ice Cream! I Scream for Tara's Ice Cream! A friend lives just blocks away. I have her to thank for introducing me to Tara's Ice Cream last summer. I was dropping her off after a long road trip. We were stuffed from a late lunch and we stopped by Tara's searching for a sweet end to the day. Thank you to the staff person who patiently let me taste every flavor, despite the line behind me. I was only going to get a baby cup, but I couldn't resist. I got a medium scoop of cajeta, a rich caramel ice cream made from goat's milk. In the past year, I've been back numerous times. I've tried almost all their exotic flavors including pandan, black sesame, camote, cardamom, corn, sweet cream and strawberry balsamic. My only lament, their closest location was in Berkeley or Oakland. But then it was like Tara read my mind when I discovered they have a Pleasanton store! DANGER, Will Robinson! made a day trip out here with the wife after she got a living social coupon for half off.. I was quite skeptical, but being a foodie, i couldn't say no. we got there on a sunday afternoon and there was a line creeping towards the door. I wasn't thrilled about having to wait after a longass drive, but alas! i started looking at all the different and unique flavors that they had and i was sold.. when your ice cream shop is popular and you offer flavors like green chili and garam masala, it's gotta be damn good. I ended up getting a double scoop (one of the green chili and one of the garam masala) in a sesame cone. best ice cream i've ever had. can't wait to go back and try the other flavors.. oh and don't waste your time getting it in a cup.. the sesame cone rocks with really any of the ice creams that they have there. read more

My girl had regular chocolate & mint chip in a plain (handmade) cone. Her words "it's good." My Girlfriend and I recently discovered this place and it is our new favorite ice cream spot! We like the fact that each portion isn't a beheamouth of ice cream but tasteful size in either compostable cups or yummy waffle cones, my favorite is the Sesame:) A truly unique and original ice cream shop that I can't share with enough people. I even talk about it on my film sets in LA... I will admit that this place does get packed during all hours as we've been there at all times of day or night but good things come to those that wait! I've been in yogurt/ice cream shops across the US that may have compostable cup options though most do not. Tara's is the first I've seen that is completely organic and sustainable for something simple as ice cream which requires a fare amount of energy to create, freeze, dispense, consume, and dispose of the cup/fork that are destined to be tossed. This type of establishment should get awards for their thoughtful design of this shop for something as simple as ice cream. The fact that it's GOOD ice cream is almost beside the fact. First of all amazing Ice Cream! The texture and flavor are spot on! Service was great, we sampled a lot of flavors and with a metal spoon. No lines but there was an on-going entry of people. Once you step in you smell the flavors and feel the heat of the place. The place has 3 stools to sit on, but it's really hot in there. It was fun trying all the flavors as they each tasted exactly like the name of the flavor. Mint - It tastes like the mint herb. Like the actual herb. Not like any other mint ice cream. Like the herb. Mint. Walnut - It tastes exactly like Walnut. You get it... And the regular flavors like chocolate, vanilla, and cookies and cream. Too yum. Hello my new local ice cream heaven. I have a rule to not have ice cream in the freezer at home, because if it's there I will eat it until it is all gone. SO with that rule, I walk to go get ice cream a lot. A LOT. Before, I'd go to Dryers because it was the closest and when I wanted to torture myself, I'd wait in line at Ici. From now on, it's Tara's all the way. Just as good and even more selections then Ici and it blows Dryers out of the race all together. They have so many flavors that it takes me about 15 minutes to decide and they're flavors change daily. Talk about heaven!!! read more

it's nearly invisible, and almost a secret, even though it's received a lot of reviews. I went for the Bay Laurel flavor in a big way. It's very entertaining to watch one employee specialize in the hand scale manufacture of waffle cones. Tara has easily as many great flavors and textures as Ici, but isn't over-patronized by lines wrapping around the block. I like Tara and her ice cream. My friend who is the ultimate food snob turned me on to this place and I tell everyone I can about it. It is a shame that Ici ... a few blocks down ... gets a lion's share of the attention. I see the long line and I am often tempted to hand out Tara's business cards and tell those waiting in line, "Walk a few blocks to Tara's! You'll be glad you did!" (But that's what happens when you don't have the Chez Panisse connection and all the attention that goes with it!) Tara's is VERY creamy. I also like Lush near the Piedmont Theater, and Naia on Shattuck. Those are my three favorites (sorry Ici). They are quite different yet all are exceptional! read more

Poor Tara's. I feel so bad for Tara's because it is forced to sit in the shadow of Ici just up the street. When I moved to the neighborhood I went to Tara's a lot, but since I've discovered Ici I come here less and less. It's not fair for Tara because their ice cream is delicious; it just has the goddess of ice cream a few steps away. I went here again last night, and I'm glad I did. It's really good. In particular, I love the spiced pumpkin which they have regularly. Although it's kind of expensive it is definitely worth it to share the Apple Pie Frappe, which is in essence an apple juice milkshake. It's amazing. I need to remind myself to come here more often and not just give Ici all my attention, because Tara's is nearly as deserving. read more

Childhood homie Tammie K. suggested this treasure of an ice cream joint if I were ever in the Berkeley area. We decided to obtain some sustenance here before taking a stroll through the UC Berkeley campus. The attendant present for our visit was both super friendly and super helpful when allowing us to sample a lot of the exotic flavors. I settled on a medium-sized cup with three scoops. I put together the spicy Mexican Chocolate with a scoop of Vanilla Bean and Peanut Butter. Yes, nothing really uber exotic, but yet another shining example of my perpetual devotion to the Peanut Butter/Chocolate ambrosia fusion. The place is small. Tiny store front and amazing ice cream! It is just as good (with more interesting flavors) as Ici and there isn't a ridiculous line. The staff are generally friendly and patient as I try most of the ice creams they offer. Anytime I am with in 20 miles of this place I stop to get a scoop or two. I love the unusual and inventive flavors. I have had the black sesame, basil, lemon thyme, ancho chili, and corn. I am sure there have been other, but those are the ones that stand out in my mind. FAVORITE Ice cream place!!! The flavors are unique (and change daily), and all taste amazing. Service is always great, the guy (i think he's the owner?) is so friendly! Annnd, they're organic! Mmmmmmm. Sooo tastey!!! Omg. I love that they have flavors I have never seen before, but they were surprisingly delicious. When I went there, I got a scoop of sesame with a scoop on cajeta on top of it. (Cajeta is a caramel like flavor ice cream made with goat's milk.) It was delicious! I wish I brought my own pecan to add on top of it. I was kind of scared of prices before I came, but it is the same price you would expect of any ice cream shop.
