Without the help of yelp I never would have found this gem. You can just tell that this restaurant does it all with LOVE. The staff were super friendly and really See to it that you are happy with your experience. I absolutely love that they have so many vegetarian and vegan options and they clearly mark them with a V or VG on the menu. I had the spinach enchiladas. They were delish and felt very healthy. Unlike just about any other Mexican restaurant, I actually felt good leaving there (not like I wanted to crawl into a ball and take a nap). I also love that they serve fresh smoothies and juices as opposed to margaritas and beer. The vegan horchata was great! As was the fabulous 4 smoothie. My girlfriend had the vegetarian chimichanga. Absolutely incredible!! Super hungry after paddle boarding for most of the day so the hot fries were spot on. Not sure if they home make the ketchup but it was delicious. Love the tomatillo with the chilaquiles, the mole sauce with the carnitas was out of this world. I was giving up hope of finding good Mexican food since moving to Colorado until Tarasco's! We were in town from Colorado Springs where I have yet to find good Mexican and had a great lunch! As many yelpers have stated- this is a go to 'hole in the wall' kinda Mexican place. We were looking for cheap Mexican food one night and this popped up! Sure the smell of the place isn't the best, and the floors are a little worn down.. but the food and the charm certainly make up for it. There are fun little sayings covering the walls that give it a unique charm. When we arrived we were instantly greeting with chips and salsa- which is a-okay in my book! I ordered the verde enchiladas - extremely gooey and CHEESEY. They were also COVERED in their green sauce. I got 3 enchiladas, a side of rice (perfect for soaking up all the juices), and fried beans for only $10. My husband got the 3 taco platter which also came with rice and a side of fried beans for $10. The waitress suggested he order a red/orange looking steak for his tacos and they were SO FLIPPING GOOD. I'm kicking myself for not remembering the name of the steak! Overall- we had a fun experience trying out a new place for only $20. I've been there four times now. Sopes (carnitas) are delicious. Steak tacos -- also delicious. The green sauce that comes with the tacos is amazing. Salsa is good. Enchiladas are okay but not great. Pass on the chile rellenos. ** This isn't a part of my rating -- mainly just to be helpful for those who are celiac. The restaurant advertises that much of their menu gluten free. It is fine if you are gluten sensitive; it is NOT fine for those with celiac. The first 3 times were okay; the 4th -- glutened. We had been warned the fryer was not dedicated -- and there isn't a separate prep area -- but we were lucky on the first three visits. read more

My sister was in town and she is Vegan. She was craving enchiladas and pulled up this gem on Yelp. We came here for dinner on (11/13/2017). Nice quaint place that you can kinda see from Federal.. it is next to Sweet Leaf Dispensary. The parking lot is a bit difficult as for getting out. Now to business. The staff are all wonderful. There are all positive quotes around the whole restaurant. Just great energy in there. A lot of the food items on the menu can be Vegetarian (V) or Vegan (VG) and it is clearly marked which is nice instead of having to ask the server. They are known for their Mole. They have plenty of Jugos (juice) to choose from, all made fresh, with their juicer. Since I was feeling under the weather that week I ended up getting their Caldo de Pollo and it is soooo delicious! We shared a guacamole and chips (it was very salty, whomever made it was very generous on the salt). You are welcomed with chips and delicious salsa. My sister and her boyfriend ordered the Vegan Enchilada plate (Carrots and potatoes), beans, and the rice is not your usual tomato Mexican rice. It was white with great flavor with cut up vegetables. She also ordered the Vegan Horchata. I enjoyed their food so much, I came back on 11/18/2017 for their Caldo, but they didn't have it (sad day). I tried their Grilled Nopales (Cactus) as an appetizer and wow! My friend was even amazed. He had nopales in Arizona and did not have a good experience at all. Quick disclaimer - this place is definitely a hole in the wall. Please do not go here expecting a fine dining experience. This place is as divey as it comes and thats what makes it wonderful! The hubs and I have been searching for some good Mexican and this place definitely hit the spot. The flavors are definitely unique and not quite what I think of traditional Mexican food but its definitely delish. So to start we ordered the guacamole which was made to order - very unique in Denver I have found. It was chunky with lots of chunks of avocado, tomato and the like. I ordered the fish tacos and they were awesome. I know fish and Denver don't always mix but these were good! The ambiance is definitely on the funky side - painted flags, Mexican wrestlers, etc - and the place is a little worn down. I can guarantee though that it is worth the gamble. Chili relleno had zero flavor or spice and more or less tasted like bell peppers and nothing to enhance the flavor. The rice was very odd, being that it was a white rice with peas and carrots and again no flavor at all, it almost felt like what you get at a Chinese restaurant, rather than Spanish rice. So thankful that Tarasco's offers such a huge selection of vegetarian and vegan offerings!!! While it might be considered "a hole in the wall" for its small size and kind of obscure location, it is well worth the hunt! While my meat-eating counter part only regarded it as being okay (he got the chicken flautas and one chicken enchilada), my bean and rice burrito smothered in veg friendly green chili was quite awesome! The green chili is very flavorful and quite spicy, so I couldn't really taste the beans on their own, but just the fact that their refried beans are vegan is amazing. I ate most of my boyfriend's rice and it was basic but very good! I will say that his enchilada and flautas both looked hand-made and hand-rolled! We both enjoyed the chips and salsa that were brought to us upon sitting down. I cannot wait to go back to Tarasco's and try their jalapeño peppers, cactus, fresh juices, churros, and the plethora of other veg options. One thing I will recommend for slight improvement is friendliness of service. I decided to try Tarasco's after I saw it proclaimed in Westword as 'The Best Restaurant on Federal'. That's a pretty bold claim, so I had to see for myself. I've only been once, and plan to go back (hopefully repeatedly). While I might disagree with Westword as to whether this is 'the best', I have no qualms with saying that it is pretty darn good. Given the numerous accolades I decided to try the mole. It was a bit too sweet for my taste, but it was complex, full, and tasty. Others at the table had the chilaquiles, which I tried, and which were dynamite. I will definitely have that next time I'm there. Tarasco's is a small restaurant. It's hidden away like the proverbial diamond in the rough. We had no trouble getting a table (on a Tuesday around 6:30), but I can't speak to other times of the day or days of the week. Even if there were a wait, it would be totally worth it. Great food, clean and colourful interior, friendly and helpful staff... the makings of a great restaurant. read more

This is a crazy, mixed-up restaurant, but the kind of crazy I love. Thanks to Thomas S. for introducing me to Tarasco's at an unofficial Yelp event last week. Here's why I like it: 1. Massive menu with lots of choices: American favorites, regional Mexican favorites, and a big non-alcoholic drink menu that would put any juice bar to shame. Try the avocado drink (with banana.) Serious. This is like a meal in itself. 2. Kick ass mole. The kind that leaves your tongue tingling afterward. 3. Small inside, but dripping in atmosphere. Maybe I should post some photos, because David S. took about 30 on my iPhone. (Note to anyone who leaves their phone on the table near David - please enable your password.) :) 4. This place is really easy to miss. If you're driving north on Federal, which I almost always do, you can't even see the sign until you've almost passed it. And even then it doesn't look like much more than a hot-dog cart at a quick glance. And they've got this strange Hotel California thing going on with the parking lot, where all of the parking spaces are angled forward, but you still have to back out on Federal when you are ready to make a run for it. Given that there's a hot dog cart out front, the massive drink list of very healthy and delicious shakes, and some of the best Mole I've ever had makes for a really great but slightly quirky experience. Once you enter it's warm and comfortable, although not the best for large groups. A group of 20 can overrun this place. Their Guacamole was really nice, and one of the appetizers was pickled Jalapeño halves filled with peanut butter and cheese. I know it sounds weird and it was but at the same time I loved it. I want to go back and try some of the other things on the menu, but I will have a hard time ordering anything that doesn't have their Mole just because it was so good. I write this review about 11 hours since I ate here last night for Thomas S.' UYE event and I am still full. The guacamole we started with was the best I've had outside of Mexico. It's served on cool wooden platters with chips. For my entree I enjoyed the Sopas with Carnitas. If you've never had these one could say it's looks like a tostada but the bottom tortillas is fluffy and thick enough to be picked up and folded. It was delish! A little salsa fresca on top would've added to the flavor even more. The serving is 3 large Sopas so Claire S. and I split them and the chicken enchiladas with mole. The mole was very good, but I couldn't have eaten a plate of it so it was perfect to share. This is a place I will be back to & soon. *The one downside and maybe you won't think of it as a downer was I left smelling of grease and everything I wore needs to get washed. read more
