Store is in steep decline from what it was years ago, when it was spotless, organized, and they paid attention to checkout lines so you never had to wait long. I was looking for men's clothing, and it was as disorganized and messed up as a scene from a post-apocalyptic movie, with brands, sizes, and colors mixed up in total chaos and things just stuffed on shelves and racks, kinda like a clothing donation dumpster. Checkout line was long, and no more cashiers were called up to handle the surge like they used to do. Reminds me of the sloppy, decrepit Kmart in Assembly Row before it closed. read more

This Target is bigger than a City Target (yay) but smaller than the more suburban locations (like Everett). So it's a bit of a mixed bag on what you can and can't find. They don't have a fresh food section, but do have a dry-good and beverages section. They also don't have beer and wine, which is quite unfortunate but not surprising in the puritanical land of Massachusetts. On the other hand, they are very walkable from Union Square which is something you usually can't say for most urban areas. And being used to only City Targets in SF, and the limited selection that comes with, it's pleasing to have a substantially bigger location close by when I need it. read more

The road work makes it difficult to get to the parking lot but other than that I appreciate this Target. Its never too busy, making it easy to get what I came for in a timely manner. I love this Target store. The staff is very helpful and will go out of their way to help you find what you are looking for. The store is always well organized and clean whenever I have been there. They have a lot of excellent deals, especially if you get a Target Red Card (if you're worried about getting one, make sure you pay it off each month so you avoid interest charges. The Red Card gives you 5% off each time, special deals/coupons, free shipping for online orders--it's a great thing) and use Target Circle for coupons. They have a large parking lot and I've never had a problem finding a place to park. I come here every two weeks...sometimes to get needed items, but sometimes just to browse...but I usually will end up walking out with something. Ha ha! The customer service representative & cashiers were very helpful! BUT I couldn't get over the plain clothes security person who targeted myself & husband! Literally, he popped up and appeared in each and every isle & Department that we entered. This is HORRIBLE customer service! Borderline harassment. I was not able to simply shop, in peace. I could barely concentrate on what I was shopping for, as he idiotically tried to appear as to look intensely at any item, any item close to us (in multiple departments). BAD experience! We left one area, went all the way to customer service for "price match" inquiry, then returned to shop & guess who returned?! Hovering & making for a very uncomfortable & unsatisfactory experience! I should have brought this up to a manager immediately (hindsight is 20/20). **Get it together Target! & train your cheap, ignorant & uninformed security to look out for actual dangers & threats to your establishment! This is a fantastic Target and I will tell you why.. First off they have the biggest Starbucks I have found in any Target. The store is clean, organized and the staff is always willing to help which is something you don't always find at Target It's located in a good location in Somerville and there is lots of parking which isn't always a given when shopping near Boston. They have a great sports card selection and games if that is something you are into And finally they have everything you would need from a basic Target experience. My review isn't of the Target itself - if you've been to one Target, you've been to this Target - but rather the terrible parking lot situation. Yes, there is parking, and lots of it! But buyer beware: the Target works with a truly predatory tow truck company, Pat's. Pat's pays someone to sit in the lot and wait for you to walk away from your car and the store, and when you do, they tow you. Yes, there are signs - read them. But then also consider the reasonable experience of a person going to a shopping plaza. Perish the thought of a walk to a nearby mailbox to drop your mail off after you park, or grab a cup of coffee across the street before you go shopping - you'll come back after your Target run bearing five more bags than you intended to leave with because that's what happens at Target, and you'll find your car gone. Save yourself $180 and several hours and go to another Target. I contacted management at both the store and corporate...they say they'll take it under consideration - and that even their employees have had this happen! However, for a company that claims they take fostering local economic development seriously...they really seem to only be fostering the economic development of an extremely predatory company. Wow, whoever the Svengali marketing wizard they hired over at Target three years ago should get an ENORMOUS raise. Target was right there in the thick with K-Mart, WalMart, boasting a depressing array of slightly-lower priced items where people who needed discounts could go to get them. And then, those little bulls-eyes were appearing everywhere, and slowly, slowly but surely, they have managed to become a genuinely hip, genuinely fun, and highly utilitarian place to buy foodstuffs (lots of specialty items-- who knew?), adorable clothes (it's practically a staple in my wardrobe these days, something that if you'd told me a year ago I would have either laughed or cried), and lots of nice cosmetic/electronic/etc. products at a reasonable price. Weirdly, I have also really appreciated--this is specific to the Somerville Target--the pharmacy, where very respectful and knowledgeable people fill your scrips with these cute color-coded bottles to delineate who in your family is taking the meds. They even give you some crazy discounts on generics, once going a number of dollars beneat my typical insurance co-pay. For those of you out there who have experienced the embarassment and anger caused by the disdain some pharmacists don't bother to mask when filling certain scrips (no matter how legit) like birth control, pain meds, psych meds, and I'm sure lots of other things-- my experience is that it's not like that here. Which is really, really nice. Some downsides of the Somerville Tar-get are that the clothes selection is not the bargain goldmine I was used to finding in rural Ohio, but, I can live with that. Also, it's really crowded at peak times. Try later in the evening, it's much nicer. Now, my recommendation is not without certain ethical reservations. I mean, beneath it's newly-trendy image, it's still a jumbo multinational corporation probably exploiting workers around the world. And that really sucks. But, sometimes, you have to go for the best of the worst, and Target is it. read more

It's not godawful, mind you, but in comparison to the Everett Target, it's just a wee step down - especially in terms of key product availability (see: Cherry Coke Zero 12-packs). After a drastic revamp that expanded foot space and stocked shelves with consumer packaged goods, the outlook is brighter. Couple the facelift with probably the most enigmatic and engaging Electronics department staff I've ever met in any retail location worldwide, It's crawling its way up Olympus to sit with Everett's Zeus on high. Out of habit, and for geographic designation, we'll probably always call this one "Shitty Target." Shame too, because that title belongs to the one in South Bay Shopping Center. I'd get Coyote Ugly and chew my arm off to escape that hellhole. Yeesh. read more

I'll admit, coming from Indiana, I've never been particularly impressed by Target. The Target in the town where I grew up was rather run-down, and I always thought of it as a low-end department store. I was pleasantly surprised by the Somerville Target. It has definitely changed my perception of the store in general. I specifically went to this store to buy furniture. I had a rented Zipcar and had to find someplace close so I could reach them before the rental ran out. Target isn't a typical stop when you think of furniture, but I was on a mission and it was the closest place I could think of that might satisfy my needs. When I arrived, I was surprised by the selection. The store is large with a variety of products. They carry 'value' brands, but I was surprised to see that they also had a number of more expensive 'quality' products (and not just in relation to furniture - I wandered around a bit before reaching my ultimate goal.) The second surprise was the service. I decided I wanted an insanely heavy dresser. I tried to pull it off the shelf, realized it was more than I could handle, and so went to the nearby pharmacy to ask for assistance. They called someone on a radio who quickly showed up in my department to ascertain the nature of my request for assistance. When she saw the massive box, she called for some guys who came and hefted it onto a flatbed cart for me. They rolled it to the front of the store, I checked out, brought my Zipcar to the doors, and they loaded it in for me. It was very friendly and painless. I was really pleasantly surprised by the experience. After assembling the furniture, I'm pleased by the quality and craftsmanship. I'm ashamed to admit that I've bought furniture from Wal-Mart before, and it was of a much lower quality level. The dresser, especially, is a very heavy piece of furnture that you might find at Jordan's or a traditional furniture dealer at a fraction of the cost. If you're looking for selection on a budget, this Target seems to be the place to go, not only for furniture, but for a wide range of product. Atypically high level of service for a retail department store. It's a very pleasant place. I recommend it for all your department store needs. read more

Holy hell this place is HUGE now. It no longer looks like the Target that time forgot and more like Joan Rivers 699 face lifts ago. You know, freshened up but not quite fembot yet. They now have groceries (no produce still...) which is great. The prices still can't compare to Market Basket but put Shaw's to shame (what doesn't though?). They're also installing a Starbucks which, meh, but whatever. I am really astounded at the work they've done here even if no one can explain how they expanded the store without taking over the orange box next door. Thankfully I no longer live so close that I spend 2/3 of my paycheck here but it's nice to know that when I need my Target fix it'll be all shiny and new now! read more

I used to like shopping at this Target until recently when I needed to ask for assistance. I bought a Nintendo 3DS game on a Friday. The following Monday I was in the store and noticed they had a promotion where you could buy 2 and get the third one free. So I picked out two more games and asked the clerk if I could take advantage of their promotion. He had to pass me off to the Store Manager. The first thing the Manager said to me was "No." I could tell he didn't even understand what I was asking but I also thought it to be incredibly rude for him to just say no right away. After a few minutes of reexplaining, it seemed like maybe he was finally starting to understand but still replied with, "You have to go home and get the game you bought and give it to us and we will give you a new version of the same game along with the two new ones you picked out." "Why?" "Because." I had the receipt with me while I was talking to him. I wanted to keep the game I had already bought because it wasn't defective and I'd already started playing. It's almost as if this particular Target's Store Manager doesn't like customers, doesn't want them to be happy, and doesn't want to take their money. To be honest, I like all the other interactions I've ever had with everyone in the store, which makes it all the more frustrating that the one person in charge of it all has such poor social and customer service skills. read more

I just moved here and my apartment is bare because I'm waiting on the movers to bring me my stuff. So my husband and I wanted to spend our remaining wedding gift cards from Target along with the 10% off registry completion coupon on stuff we knew we'd need. Luckily, this place is 1.5 mi from our apt and has a huge parking lot. There was no way we were going to walk with the amount of stuff we were planning to get. We ran all over the store, me ignoring the clothes and accessories, he ignoring the Legos. We stocked up on pillows (do we really need 6?), batteries, wardrobes, shelving units, a cool Michael Graves laundry sorter, wall hooks, and I let him buy a drill. And yes, we walked around with a registry gun and zapped everything we put in our 2 shopping carts so we could save ourselves 10%. I have no shame. Everything we were looking for was in stock. I wish they'd carry their double-hang closet rod in stores and not just online. Closets in these Cambridge apartments are tiny, I'm sure everyone could use one! At least now, our apartment no longer looks completely bare and sad. read more

High marks for a clean, well-stocked store and friendly, happy-go-lucky staff. There's a Starbucks. Lines typically move along quickly. They don't make you feel guilty for not opening a Target card. But what is it with the ethnic hair section and the multicultural hair signs? Is this standard across all Target stores? Seems like a bit of a throwback to the sixties. I get what they're trying to do, but it's not like you'll ever see a Non-Ethnic Hair aisle in a predominantly Latino or black neighborhood store. On the whole I'd give Target 4 stars. As a corporation they are so much less evil than Wal-Mart - or at least come off that way - that I'm a big fan. The Somerville Target is about average for a Target store - 4 stars. I have been to nicer Targets, I've been to worse. The video game section is lame. Go to Circuit City in Assembly Square if you want to find the game you're looking for. The housewares section - particularly dishes, glasses, and silverware is often poorly stocked. On the plus side I've never had a problem with any of the staff there. All have been friendly, and quite a few have been cool too, something I wouldn't even imagine saying about retail store employees. The fact that it's the most urban of the Target stores in the area (and a few blocks from my home in Union Square) makes it really appealing. read more

Target! My favorite department store! This Target is on Somerville Ave at the intersection with Medford Street. This was a Bradlees a long time ago, but after Bradlees went bankrupt, Target fixed up the store and moved in. This store is also near my work so I am here often. Location: Can't much better. Near several major roads (Somerville Ave, Medford Street, McGrath Hwy, Washington Street). Almost in the heart of Union Square and definitely in the heart of Somerville. Store: When Target leased the property after Bradlees went bankrupt, Target totally renovated the store. New floors, ceilings, walls, etc etc. So as of 2004, this was a brand new store. However, unlike most Targets in this area, this is smaller than most Targets, so the product selection will be limited. Selection: Because this Target is far smaller than most Targets, the selection of products they carry is limited. For example, this store does not have a home improvement area, or the full suite of fresh groceries that other stores have. BUT for everyday staples, this Target should have what you need. I do, however, think this store gets picked over a lot due to its location (especially after a weekend or major holiday). They just may not have the room for the extra stock and need to wait for the truck to come. Price: It's Target. Prices may be SLIGHTLY different than other local target stores (but typically not that much of a price jump). Overall, the prices are very average for this area. Staff: I Haven't had much interaction with the staff at this location, other than being checked out buy someone. But what interactions I've had with staff members have always been good. My biggest complaint about this Target is just the lack of floor space. It's too bad they didn't take over the CW Price next to Target (when AJ Wright closed), and made the store bigger. I don't know why they don't,as this store is busy enough to warrant it. *shrug* Overall, I like this Target, and I'm sure I'll be back since it's close to work. I am consistently disappointed by the employees at this store. They don't know where anything is, and instead of helping you they will just tell you it's backordered and there's no way to tell when something will be back in stock. Example: I wanted to buy a bike light. Any bike light at all. I was really not picky. I could not find a bike light in the bike section, searched the store for available employees for help, was told there are no more (without the employee even going with me to that section, just telling me in the section I found him), there was no telling at all when any would be back in stock, and shrugged off. No apology for taking a trip to target for nothing and not finding what I was looking for. No customer service whatsoever. I asked to speak to a manager to see if maybe they might know. I had already given up on getting it at Target and planned to get it from Amazon, but at that point it was the principle of the matter. I was told there was no manager there. I asked again. Finally I got a shift manager, who asked the employee what he said and agreed it was true. Again no apology, no further explanation, no sense of being appreciated as a customer. I have more stories, but this is probably the best one. Almost every time I go to this target they are out of something and/or employees are unhelpful or condescending or just not very good at their jobs. ("Where is...?" "Oh....maybe over there?" Or "No bag, please" twice followed by putting my things in a bag, then saying it again, then having to request the 5 cent bag discount without them doing it automatically). Every time I say I will only shop local or at the dollar store or on Amazon. Of course I will go to this target again, but I will avoid it as much as possible and use other options instead. read more

OK, so I love Target. But this one just isn't as good as they get. I recently moved and needed to pick up a couple things. After working late I was so tired and not really wanting to be there, so I was hoping to run in and run out. Not so fast though...I think the ceilings are lower than other Targets I've shopped at, and the walls separating the middle section were so high, I couldn't see the ceiling signs that easily identify the departments. So I had to go around the whole store to find two departments. Waaaaahhhhh! And the lighting seemed dim, which made it feel like an old time store. Since it was my first impression, and I found everything I was looking for, I'll give it 3 stars...but I won't be shopping at this Target regularly, that's for sure. read more

Dear Target, please buy more Brita filters. Love, Devon. This is the Target near our house, and so far we've been there everyday since being in the new place. Granted, we are still getting settled and buying various things that come up that we've missed on other shops, but it's still good. The staff is helpful, more so than some other locations, and the selection is decent. My only complaint is that they are all out of Brita filters and we need a new one.....we are drinking tap water, so it we die randomly, that's why. The selection of home stuff is good, and I bought a pair of sheets there was match our stuff perfectly, and they have a good selection of kitchen stuff (I bought a coffee maker for $7 for when I don't want espresso!). I may also splurge on the $7 waffle iron, too. I love a bargain, but not so much in a Christmas Tree Shop crapfest sort of way. read more

Target's an interesting animal. And by interesting most of the time I mean confusing. Sometimes it can be hard finding things in the grocery section. I remember the first time I went after the renovation I had to flag an employee to find out where they keep the foil paper. It happens to be tucked all the way in the back in a corner. I find their layout slightly confusing but hey I enjoy browsing the aisles looking for stuff that I wasn't aware I didn't have or needed. And when I'm done with real shopping I skip on over to the electronics section where I play a game of chicken with all those big screen TVs. Target's such a tease. But I've won every game. As pretty and affordable as those TVs are I know I don't need one and if I did I can always get it on Amazon. One of these days though, I'll lose the game but it's nice to know that I can get a technician to come out and install anything I purchase for a modest fee. Checkout though is where Target shines. I think this is the one store where the lines are never long and they always seem to have a good spread. Even when I'm doing a large amount of shopping I can always be sure my checkout will go quickly and smoothly. Our monthly meetings always end on a positive note. read more

Holy crapola! They really do have everything. I've gone to Target a few times but having come from a place where a store 1/4 of this size is considered huge, I've always been a little overwhelmed to browse through the whole store. I'd usually run in for toilet paper, paper towels, shampoo and other stuff like that, sticking to about .0001% of this store. Then this past weekend, my friend and I decided to hit Target up. Damn! They really do have everything. Me, being the cultured city snob, has always turned my nose up at buying clothing at these buy-it-all chains. But the clothing is actually really cute! Who knew? Not to mention, pretty decent low - mid end electronics section, furniture 1/4 the price of Crate and Barrel and West Elm, yet still the same fake-wood quality, sleds, housewares and maxi pads. In the end, I ended up walking away with a medley of items including several pairs of socks, feet warmers, a vegetable peeler, a hand juicer (!!!!!!!), a dish tray and some other random crap, including a set of rubbermaid storage containers for 49 cents! This Target seems small now, which is strange. Before we had any Target Greatlands in the area, this was the place to go for cheap clothing, or shoes/accessories. I realize now that I can't seem to get in and out of [any] Target without spending way more money than I intended to... I don't allow myself to go all too often anymore because of this. They have a decent variety of items here, I've noticed that if you have a size 8 foot and are a lady, your shoe choices can be a little tricky, but they always have a bunch of jeans in VARYING sizes and are a decent choice when you need a last minute outfit. read more

I have to preface this with the fact that I absolutely love going to Target. It lets me get suburban bargains without having to live in the suburbs. This is a pretty good midsized Target, and although the surrounding area is definitely shady, Target is always clean and neat and lacking in sketchy-types. It is accessible from Lechmere or Davis Square by the 87 bus, although the bus runs infrequently, and it's also a short drive past Cambridgeside Galleria, so you can get all your shopping done in one day. (If you go by bus, try to be done early and bring a buddy!) I always hit up Target for toiletries, since most of their toiletries are much cheaper than CVS or Shaw's. For some items the price differential is narrow, but it adds up if you buy a lot of things. (For example, I got saline contact solution, 24 oz for $8 cheaper than CVS/Shaw's, but my moisturizer was only $.30 cheaper) I also really like some of the Target brand toiletries- they are only slightly lower quality than the major-name brands, but easily 50% cheaper. Plus, they don't smell funny like CVS brand anything. They have decent quality affordable housewares, but if you are careful about saving those 20% off Bed, Bath, and Beyond coupons you can often get an equal or better deal at BB&B, so it's worth checking out Target .com for price comparisons before you make the trek out to Somerville. I do agree with the Yelper who said some of the impulse-buy displays need to be moved to better places. I found a 4 pack of Chapstick next to the electric razors that could not be found in the actual Chapstick aisle. This Target also sells a lot of furniture, so you can pick it up instead of paying the obscene Target .com shipping costs. I also love the Target snack bar because it has mall-snacks without mall-snack prices. It's also good for seasonal buys, since they sell tons of midpriced seasonal decorations you can't always get in the city. Registry warning: Don't ever use any of Target's registries. I registered for 5 items at Target for my wedding (BB&B didn't carry them) and the registry didn't update to reflect when an item was purchased. I ended up with a ton of duplicates and damaged items, and I only registered for FIVE THINGS. read more

This isn't the nicest Target I've ever seen, but it gets the job done most of the time and the location is great if you live in Cambridge or Somerville. This store is definitely focused on housewares and the basic things you need to set up an apartment. The store isn't very large, but they've got a big selection of linens, towels, curtains, rugs, small furniture items, etc. The food section is mostly snack foods but you can occasionally find a good deal on basics like cereal or tea. The only problem I have with this Target is that they can't seem to keep the shelves stocked around September 1st so it's not uncommon to come in looking for something and leave empty-handed. If you can drive a little further out, you might be able to avoid the move-in madness. read more

I'm not sure how or why they are capable of achieving such a frustrating experience. Expect a single employee up front to ring you out and a long and slow line. Self checkout gives you one chance to enter your target card pin and then locks you out and don't expect an employee to come to your rescue. After locking out 2 machines I gave up. I bought cleaning supplies and fresh produce and she asked if I wanted a bag and I said yes. After she put them in a single bag I asked for a second bag to separate the cleaning supplies from my food she said "that will be 10 cents". I only had a $20. Good luck shopping here. This is your typical target, a store we often use when we are at home in the wine country of California. As we were exiting the store the security guard (a young white man) had stopped an African American couple with a shopping cart full of target bags with groceries. He ask to see their receipt, while my wife and I with a personal backpack of groceries and two bags of chips we were carrying (no grocery bag) were waved through. When the security guard was questioned about this he said it was store policy to check all items in bags. I cry racism! My wife and I who are an older white couple were stereo-typed to be okay, while the middle aged African American couple were stereo-typed to be crooks. Shame on you target!!! I will think twice before returning to any of your stores. read more
