I went in and the woman in the front did not greet me but instead went straight to the back. When she did interact me, there was no greeting just a clear what do you want with a tone of voice that conveyed she did not care and wanted me to know it. I ordered, got my food, and paid and she did not say thank you. My cookies were the same type of cookies in literally every single bakery and supermarket. The supermarket is better because the self-checkout machine is equally uncaring, but its excuse is it is not in its programming to care. read more

I've been looking for a good Italian bakery, and didn't realize that one was right under my nose. As generically named as possible, Tarrytown Pastry chef is fair nondescript from the outside. Walk inside, and it reminded me a lot of a stereotypical Italian bakery in the 5 boroughs. Opens at 7 too just like one. Baked goods are more American than Italian, however there are the obligatory cannoli and the like. Service was friendly, and prices were on par with a local bake shop. Seemed a little high to me but I guess I'm an old fart now. Upon ordering the rainbow cookies I was not excited. They were very big (squares), color wasn't very bright, and they looked more cakes than cookie. I'm glad I didn't change my mind, as these were much better than I anticipated. They were clearly fresh, with the right consistency (if a bit thick), good quality chocolate, and they were very balanced with the apricot jam. I'm more of a raspberry guy as the apricot tends to fade into the background, but there was a judicious amount here. Not sure why they don't use a more bold food dye as that would largely solve the aesthetic issue. Got chocolate covered cannoli which was a solid rendition of a classic; their cream is not as sweet as some others, but with the chocolate covered shell it's a non-issue. Would like to try a plain one sometime. I'm damn happy to have this place nearby. One of the biggest fears of leaving the city was not having a good Italian bakery nearby. Generic name aside, these guys deliver on that. Will be here often and ashamed it took me so long to try. read more

I got there late in the day so the Pickens were pretty slim, but even so, I left with a beautiful cheese, danish, half a pound of assorted cookies, and a few croissants. Maria was my service and she attended to me with a big smile and a lot of patience. Do you know what it's like to try to find that perfect assortment of cookies? Food: the pastry and cookies were gifts so I can't vouch, but they did look fresh and delicious. I had half of the chocolate croissant and found the flavor to be quite nice. It was not a flaky pastry, so I'm not sure if I would purchase it again. A bit heavy. all in all, the experience was a good one, especially since I recognized upon reaching my home that I forgot my sunglasses on their countertop. A quick call to Maria this morning and she assures me. She will put them aside for me. My trip is over an hour , so I can't get back until next week but she assures me she will hang onto them. There's always a good reason to stop in at Tarrytown Pastry Chef, and over the past several years they've never failed to delight me with their baking. They have a wide variety. The typical spread of breakfast pastries includes all manner of traditional Danishes, croissants, muffins (cappuccino is my favorite), and donuts, as well as surprises like Portuguese custard tarts and lobster tails (sfogliatelle). When I bring a box home for family and friends, we end up dividing up each item so that everyone can try everything. Their food is delicious. In pre-pandemic times, my go-to treat for my students was a box of assorted cookies. The delight on their faces as they chose between the beautifully decorated cookies was matched only by their joy in wolfing down the treats. They offer good value. Even after going here for several years, I am always surprised by how low the price is when they ring me up for a full box of pastries. This is true for cakes and everything else on offer. Their competitive pricing really leaves no excuse for passing them up for the supermarket. They are reliable. We've done special orders here for cookies, cakes, and cupcakes on several occasions, and the orders always are accurate and ready on time. read more

I've only came here to purchase cakes for special occasions. They do a great job with the cakes but they seriously have to work on their customer service, especially the lady the picks up the phone. Every time I've called she answers as if I'm bothering her. She also gives half ass answers and doesn't like to help. For example, I asked if she can do a certain design on a cake and she tells me she doesn't know if they can do it, like okayyy? Why don't you find out if you can. After I tell her she's not giving me an answer she then tells me to email her a picture of the cake but never gets back to me. She seriously has to work on her tone and customer service. At least act like you want to help. After this experience I had to get the cake somewhere else and I didn't want to because I love their cakes! The other place that I went to asked me to email them a picture of the cake, took my name and number down, and actually got back to me. Tiny and unassuming place in a small town selling delicious cookies and baked goods. Located on Broadway in a row of stores and businesses. There are a lot of different desserts to choose from - cookies, pastries, cakes - all beckoning one to eat them. Coffee, cappuccino, and a few small tables to sit at if wanting to hunker down and enjoy on-site. Helpful and friendly staff that offered good suggestions. Some tasty Italian cookies and anisette toast made their way back to our hotel room. No complaints at all. Would definitely hit them up again if in the area. read more

Seemingly a lot of other bakeries in the area are closed on Monday, except this place. I got the Strawberry Shortcake Cake for a birthday and everyone enjoyed it. The icing/frosting was not too sweet, the cake was definitely moist and not crumbly, and the strawberry fruit filling had a nice amount of sweet and tart and was definitely not from a can. Each slice seemed to have several pieces of strawberry in it. Everyone who had the cake enjoyed it - so I would definitely be back. I've never really been a fan of Italian butter cookies, as they always seem to be dry and crumbly with almost no taste at all - likely enough their selection seemed to meet my expectation. read more

I've never reviewed on yelp before but my experience here has been so terrible that I feel compelled to leave a review for Pastry Chef. This place should be called Moldy 2-Week Old Pastry Chef- the food they serve isn't just bad, it's hazardous. I ordered a pineapple turnover and, as you can see in the image, it was filled with thick, dark patches of mold. The owners and staff should be ashamed to serve this, and I am especially upset by the fact that most of their customers seem to be elderly individuals who may not be able to taste the mold and whatever else is growing in their pastries but are more susceptible to foodborne illnesses. Please keep you friends and family away from this place as they obviously have little to no regard for your health and safety. read more

So many thanks to say to the fabulous staff at Pastry Chef. I ordered over the phone and simply told them I wanted all white for an engagement party. She went over every filling and icing option in white and finally suggested Cannoli filling with white and chocolate cake for the main cake. I didn't feel rushed or as if I was annoying them with my questions. It was something I couldn't imagine but was so pleased she did!!!! What I didn't expect was intricate almost lace like details, edible sparkles and pearls! I was blown away. I added the 'love' and rings to the cupcakes. They could work on their penmanship but honestly overlooked it because the cake was soooooo delicious and the decorations were impeccable. The cupcakes were just as good and over the top! read more

I really love how Pastry Chef makes their Napoleon cake. The flaky layers are always fresh and the cream is neither overly sweet or too custardy. I have tried a few of their other items and they are pretty good too. It's hard for me to find a good pastry shop especially after tasting some amazing desserts in Europe. Even 'authentic' bakeries in the Bronx just don't make things the old fashioned way anymore. This place, however, really does live up to high standards. These people are rude. I called to see if they deliver cake since it was my grams bday and she turned 73. I life out of state and wanted to surprise her with a delivered cake. The girl who answered couldnt speak English. She was rude. No customer service skills at all. Instead of putting the phone on hold to ask if my request could be delivered, she puts it down and I hear the whole conversation. I had friends and family who were planning a party in the surrounding area from out of State and needed ordered a Red Velvet Cake from Tarrytown Pastry Chef. This is a local Mom/Pop business and it seems like the local community supports them. We arrived shortly before the party on Sunday (06-16-2013) and were able to locate Tarrytown Pastry Chef with no problems. We walked into the establishment and found this business to be quite busy on a Sunday morning. People from the area were lining up out the door to get fresh Italian pastries from this place. Everything smelled so good but there were no Vegan options=( I guess us California folk expect to have everything out way. The Red Velvet cake was decorated beautifully and was a total hit at the party. I wanted to thank the staff at Tarrytown Pastry Chef for making the day extra special. There were no problems with the ordering, presentation or taste of the cake. It is always nice when a plan is executed without flaws. If you are looking for a professional Bakery in the business that will satisfy all of your needs no matter where you might be planning the party from, definitely give Tarrytown Pastry Chef a shot. I highly doubt I will be in need of another cake while in the area but if I was without question I would come back here. I do wish they had a Vegan / Gluten free option. I have visited this bakery shop now for 4 times and each visit was a let down. Maybe my expectations were bit high. Just moved to this area three months ago and been in search for a good bakery since then. It is taking forever and so far no success. Pros: the cookies and cakes looks really good. The people working in shop are all smiles and highly polite. The coffee is much better as compared to many surrounding coffee shops, except one. More on that in another review. Cons: oh boy, the pastry and cookies taste bad. Tried most of the cookies and few fruit tarts and they taste like it had been made for weeks. Cookies are so tough to bite in and I got the feeling the butter used in the ingredients are more like vegetable oil. Fruit tarts are soggy on bottom, like it sat in there for long time. Croissant is ok. The soda bread is mediocre. Well I will keep on searching for a better bakery. read more

I wasn't too encouraged by the name, but walking in, it looked and smelled like an Italian bakery. I was ready to walk out when I didn't see canolli, but I figured they make them fresh, and I was right. I picked out a selection of mini-pastries, a box of cannoli, and snatched up four of these italian cheesecakes I've been obsessed with for years (I ate one on the way out, it was not super fresh but the taste was spot on). Curse you, buttery Italian cookies!!) Try the chocolate rugelach and Italian cookies. The cookies seem to dismantle and unite with your tongue. I'm trying to give this place the benefit of the doubt. Mistakes happen. In the past, I've always been satisfied with the pastries and I prefer to support local business. However, I ordered a cake for my graduation party to be delivered, I checked in with the business the day BEFORE the delivery and was assured (with attitude) that it will be delivered, only to find that my cake never came. When I came the next day, I was refunded my money and given the cake (that I could no longer share with my guests), and the owner's daughter tried to blame the place that was hosting the party. The best St. Joseph sfingi I have had in years. Chock full of cannoli cream covered with flaky pastry. Even better than the ones I purchased on Arthur Avenue. Lovely staff! Another fabulous confection prepared by the geniuses at Pastry Chef. The Napoleon, precut, half sheet cake was such a hit that there were no leftovers. If you're looking for buttery cookies, this is the place to go. They have very fresh, tasty, buttery Italian cookies that are consistently good. They also have an excellent coffee/crumb cake with cheese inside that my grandmother loves. Their other pastries and cakes though, aren't as great, at least in my opinion. I bought a chocolate cake with white buttercream that tasted like it had pepper in it. The buttercream had a strange consistency and taste - it was neither sweet or fluffy.
