I don't like leaving bad reviews, so I first emailed Tartufo about my poor experience to give them a chance to address it. But they didn't bother to reply, so I hope this review helps someone avoid a bad experience. If you read the positive reviews on Google, I can now see that so many of them are fake. I was at Tartufo May 2026, to host a college graduation dinner for 20 people. I made the reservation a year in advance, as Tartufo was recommended on a Facebook group for parents whose kids attend this university. My experience with the staff and servers that night at Tartufo was inattentive, unprofessional, and fell well below the level of service any guest would expect. I had asked Tartufo months ahead of time if I could bring a cake for dessert and the woman answering the phone said I could and would be charged to slice it, which was fine. When I arrived early at the restaurant for the reservation. I went to the second floor where our tables were and was looked at blankly by staff--no greeting. I approached the woman who was later the server in charge of our two tables, Alexia (her name was printed on our receipt at the end of the night). I approached, greeted her, and asked if I could place the cake somewhere the graduates could see it. She simply said, "no" with no alternative solution offered other than putting the cake on the table where we'd be dining. I told her that wouldn't work as there would be no room on the table while dinner was served and we would figure it out later. Throughout the evening beverage service was virtually nonexistent. During the course of dinner, the servers did not ask guests if they wanted even a first drink--guests had to try to flag down a server to get a soda, iced tea or alcoholic drink. I had one glass of wine that night and wanted another, but staff weren't checking in on guests at all. This continued throughout the night with guests having empty glasses. Water glasses were often left empty and not refilled. As the host of a large celebration dinner, it was embarrassing to have guests repeatedly searching for staff to obtain basic beverage service. At one point, an appetizer, tuna tartar, was brought to the table. We told the server no one ordered it. Despite this, the server left this appetizer on the table, and we were charged, and paid, for something no one ordered. When the cake was served, servers did not ask any guests if they wanted coffee or tea. One guest approached a server for coffee, and it took a very long time for the coffee to arrive; we thought it had been forgotten. I asked Alexia if staff offered coffee/tea to everyone, and she said that if they ask for it then they would serve it. I consider this approach very poor customer service. Alexia was not pleasant at all during the night and answered any question curtly and flatly. As the night progressed, the staff increasingly made the diners feel that we were not welcome at the restaurant. The dining experience was embarrassing and very disappointing and I would not recommend this restaurant at all. Their staff needs training on what customer service is. read more

We came here for our friend's birthday tonight. We had a 6 o'clock reservation and weren't seated until 6:20. Things only got worse from there. One of our glasses had left over water from someone else's drink. We weren't asked for our orders until 45 minutes after being seated. There were no apologies for our table being late nor the slow service. Once we ordered the food took forever to come out. We had to rush to eat to make it to our next reservation. The food was good but never have I waited that long for food and service and not received any sort of acknowledgement from the staff or manager. I asked for a drink twice and never got it. No one seemed to be bothered by it.. For the prices and reputation as well as the delay in being sat we were all floored. read more

Olive Garden quality, Newton prices. Food was awful. Like legitimately terrible. The chicken was rubbery and covered in a red sauce straight out of a jar. The cheese on top of it was deli sliced and looked like Kraft singles. It was 30 minutes before we got a waiters attention. We never got water refills. He also forgot to bring a few sides that we were charged for: Automatically added a 20% gratuity because we were a table of 5, have never seen that when it's less than 6 people. Had a great meal here! Honestly I've driven by so many times and had never tried this restaurant before and I'm so glad I did! We had an excellent meal here! We started with a couple cocktails (mojito and French lady) that were both great! For apps we got the tuna tartare avocado which I personally loved! I only wish it came with a few more bread pieces, but it was delicious! We also got the meatballs and let me just say the sauce on these was exceptional! For mains we got the pappardelle al tartufo which was a mushroom and truffle based pasta that was super rich and decadent and the veal marsala which was also super flavorful and food! We also got mushrooms and broccoli rapini for sides that were well seasoned! Of course we couldn't pass on dessert so we tried the warm chocolate cake (my personal favorite) which was so decadent and chocolatey, the cannolis, and the lemon marscapone cake which was super refreshing (and was a close second to the chocolate cake in my opinion) Definitely worth checking out this spot!! read more

Very good old style Italian meal, with a good variety of dishes. I tried the seafood risotto and it was excellent. The smoked salmon linguine was also a treat. The beef carpaccio appetizer is meltingly good with a bright arugula salad that goes perfectly. The service is attentive and the old world settings with white linen tablecloths is very classic. We arrived on time with a 7:30 pm reservation in OpenTable. The host said people are finishing up. They said we could wait and have a drink at the bar if we could find a spot . There was no space at the bar. The restaurant was packed. People were waiting and we were waiting outside. After 15 minutes, I told my husband to call sushico close by to see if could seat us. We left. Here's the issue, if you can't seat us on time, then you shouldn't take reservations. The host was unapologetic. No manager was present either. The impression was to make us wait and have a drink at the bar to drive revenue. We were hangry! This is not professional and it lacked personal presence. read more

We have lived in Chestnut Hill for over 20 years and just discovered this gem of a restaurant. Our first visit was such a delicious surprise (we went on a slow Monday), that I took friends back (on a very busy Thursday). Though we had reservations, Tartufo is not going to hurry diners through their dinners and we had to wait 30 minutes past our reservation. Had we not had teenagers in tow, we would have happily waited at the bar because the restaurant is truly charming. Our appetizers and cocktails were taken off the bill as an apology for waiting, the food was delicious, and the waitstaff delightful. Though I was wary of a roaming magician (!), he was weirdly talented, understated, and everyone from ages 17 to 70 enjoyed his tricks-- he is only there on Thursdays if that isn't your thing. Definitely make a reservation for this lovely little white table Italian restaurant, be flexible if it's a busy night, and definitely order the shrimp appetizer and mussels. read more

I AM SO HAPPY I HAVE DISCOVERED A SOUTHERN ITALIAN RESTAURANT NEAR ME!!! Tartufo is absolutely incredible, and is perfect for any occasion! Date night, casual drinks with friends, family lunch, birthdays... you name it, it's perfect. I came here with my mom for lunch, food was incredible and service was pretty nice! White table cloths, love it! They have all different types of tables: for families, date night tables tucked away, and a full bar. This place is awesome! We started off with some fresh bread and oil, it was fantastic. Super warm and oil was good, it also came with complimentary salted butter which I liked. For an appetizer, we got the mozzarella caprese salad. It was good overall, but tomatoes were a bit pale and it could've been heavier on the balsamic vinegar and pesto-- the fresh mozzarella was the star of the show here, truly amazing. I am happy we got it, but next time we will probably skip it. For our main courses, my mom ordered the shrimp piccata and I the chicken parmigiana. My mom loved her dish, and it had so much shrimp which was great. My chicken parm was excellent! Super great quality chicken, and full of melted cheese which I love (absolute cheese connoisseur here). The marinara sauce was great, homemade and tasty. The rigatoni pasta was good, but I would've preferred it a bit more al dente, that's just a personal preference though. I have lived in Newton all my adult life. Aside from the Berkowitz Legal Seafood there has rarely been a good restaurant. This one has nice -white tablecloths but that is where the goodness begins and ends. The food is heavy on red sauce. Seems to be a popular filler for large plates these days. Meh. The food was just so so or tasteless. I compare to il Capriccio in Waltham. A little way away and still too much red sauce but leaps and bounds better. There have been a couple of other good restaurants in Newton but not now. Service was slow. The waiter needed attention. People don't go to a restaurant to feed wait staff ego or watch them smack their lips dramatically to emphasize an over priced dessert. At least we don't. read more

Plus the salad was 1/2 to 1/4th the size it would be at someplace else. Two Cannolis were just too small. I ordered a full meal, but not nearly enough food for dinner. SHAME ON YOU. Now I have yet to have an evening meal there but have had lunch on three occasion and could not be more pleased with the food.Now I was there on a week day for lunch so it was nice and quite. I had misplaced my wallet and called the restaurant and they were super not caring and dismissive not taking my name and number and abruptly hung up on me. A friend wanted to take me to lunch for my birthday, and suggested Tartufo. Neither of us had been there before. Our reservation was for 1pm, but there was hardly anyone in the restaurant. Our server suggested the Shrimp al Cognac appetizer, and what an excellent choice. Shrimp, perfectly cooked in a deliciously indescribable sauce. For lunch I went with my old standby, Chicken Parm. This wasn't any ordinary Chicken Parm - It's the best I've ever had. Why? I have absolutely no idea... possibly the consistency, the sauce, the way the cheese was cooked a little more than usual with some brown on it (I loved that). The rigatoni with it was cooked to perfection. My friend had Chicken Milanese, which she loved. I didn't want dessert, but my friend had already asked the server to bring me a birthday dessert. It was carrot cake, which is not my favorite, so I brought it home for my husband. He said it was the best carrot cake he's ever had. Nice spot to grab a decent meal with some live music. I went with a larger work group, everything seemed to go smoothly. There were only a couple of times that we felt the server disappeared on us. The wine selection was pretty good with some reasonably priced bottles. The veal chop was very tasty and tender. The only dish that we felt was not tasty was the carbonara, it tasted more like a ham dish than bacon and more watery than creamy. I would eat here again and recommend it. read more

I dined here last night to celebrate a friend's birthday; there were three of us. My first time and I *will* be back. We sat upstairs which was more intimate than downstairs, which was hopping and a bit noisy. We started off with wine--2 glasses of sauvignon blanc and 1 of chardonnay, which were fine. The birthday girl and I had the Scallops and Pappardelle, which we both declared delicious. Four large scallops and the pappardelle was cooked to perfection in just the right amount of a nice creamy sauce. Our companion had something similar which she also loved. The bread offered was less than impressive--I'm sure it was authentic but not to my taste, too crunchy. I did a quick internet search and it looked close to crostini. Service was outstanding, attentive but not too much so. When the waitperson found out we were celebrating a birthday he offered a dessert on the house -- classy, Tartufo! He was incredibly knowledgeable about the menu and helped us with our selections. The food was outstanding. This is pasta heaven! Last night. chicken parmigiana and eggplant rollattini, It came with two little rolls with butter and sprinkle parmesan. Also was wrapped really well. I should have taken a picture last night but I didn't. HOWEVER they were so good I ordered there again tonight. Last night, the chicken parm was perfect, it wasn't mushy from the steam the cheese was browned up nicely and there was the perfect amount. While it shouldn't be the star of this dish... The Pasta. Whoever was on duty last night knew EXACTLY what they were doing. First thing I did when it arrived. Took a bite. Perfection. Al dente perfection. Back to the chicken this may sound weird, but I could tell that great care had been taken to ensure the thickness was consistent and that make a difference with the taste and crunch. 10/10 Eggplant Rollatini, another 10/10. This is one of my favorite dishes. The sauce was slightly sweet, the eggplant cooked/friend perfectly. The filling let's me know there is a god. The bread, in theory nothing special. But it was special. Care had been put into the packaging. It was also spongey enough to soak up sauce and had a nice chew. Tonight: Pappardelle al Tartufo. Amazing again. Great tasting mushrooms. Again pasta was on point. Caesar Salad: door dash said it was the number 1 most ordered thing. It kind of fell flat for me. The portion was small for a $14 salad, the lettuce was ok, fresh, but was missing the crunch I was looking for. Dressing is great. Little bread thing great. And solid portion of shaved cheese. Now general ramblings: Tartufo delivered. Things I think about prior to ordering pasta take away. It is always questionable. Will it be over cooked and mushy? Will it spill? Is the cheese going to be congealed? Will it be to temp? Their packaging was perfect. It seems like a lot. Separate bag for hot and cold, etc. The Saran Wrap over the plastic is appreciate by delivery drivers everywhere. Temp perfect and the delivery containers are durable enough to get reused. We asked to move and were told by the waiter absolutely not and was unnecessarily rude from then on. There's inflation and there's exploiting town residents... like $37 chicken parm inferior to Bill's Pizza directly across the square (which only lacks table cloths and a waitstaff). As far as this restaurant's waitstaff, you'll pay a mandatory 20% tip for more than four (4) people in your party. Newton's businesses, especially in the center, are known to be pricey. These guys push the limit to the point of ugliness. But if you're on a budget, they'll be happy to serve you steamed broccoli for $14. read more

Waiter was earnest but inattentive. When we would ask him for service (since he did not volunteer it), such as ordering drinks or food, he made the excuse that he didn't want to rush us. Very long waits to get help, including paying the bill. As for the meal, appetizers and dessert were very good but my expensive filet mignon had the consistency of mush. Pasta portions were small and the quality and taste were mediocre. Very disappointing all around; feel cheated. These are things you can overlook in a cheap restaurant but not in one that is so expensive. I will not go back and will not recommend it. read more
