During the winter this place changed hands to a new owner. Prices have gone up a few dollars on the Chef's Specialties menu. I order a shrimp and scallop dish and I noticed that the scallops are much smaller now since the new owner took over. Besides that everything was the same. The service was always a bit average, it would be nice if they were more pleasant and sociable. They need to hire more servers. Went here at 12 on a Saturday and there was only one other guest- a lot of people started shoveling in around 1pm though. The aesthetic was typical elegant Chinese restaurant- somewhat surprising from the unassuming outdoors. Complimentary green (or was it jasmine?) tea was served to our party of 5 as well as those wonton crisps and two types of sauces (duck and spiiicy!) I got the steamed scallops and vegetables (diet menu) item because I'm gluten-free and can't have soy sauce, and there was a HEFTY amount of scallops much to my pleasure, plus the sauce on the side added a lot of flavor and was quite yummy. My party got pepper steak w/ green peppers which was fab, and the service was quick, cordial, yet to the point and not drawn out like most American restaurants. Updating my review from previous year. Their food quality has improved and we enjoy our monthly take out meals when we visit mom in NE Philly (we live in NJ). Their soups are very good -- not overly salted -- and we enjoy the vast quantity of entrees in our take out dishes. We always take our cooler with us and bring 2/3 home for another meal at home. Folks there are very friendly and glad their dining room is always busy when we pick up our meals. read more

My fave Chinese restaurant and they have sushi now. Sushi is pretty good too. Although pricey, I think the cheapest roll is like 4.00 and is an avocado roll. I tried this restaurant because of the reviews. The food was not good at all. It was cooked extremely fast. I placed the order and 10 minutes later I was notified the food was done and the courier was on their way to pick it up. The chicken was rubbery. The sauce was thin and watery. The rice was mushy. The spring rolls were soggy. I had to heat them in the oven to harden them. Overall, I should have gone to my local Chinese restaurant because this was not worth the money, AT ALL. Very disappointed. There is no ambiance to speak of at Taste Queen, and it may take a while for someone to take your order, but once the order is taken it comes out fast and it is good. The entrees come with soup, which is nice on a cold winter night, but the soup didn't have much taste. I also had some eggrolls as an appetizer. They were tasty, but a bit overcooked. My entree was the spare ribs with rice. The spare ribs were delicious. I originally wanted to save some to take home, but they were so good I ate them all and was licking my fingers afterwards. I highly recommend those spare ribs. Taste queen is a good spot for when you are craving some Chinese food. But I wouldn't travel far for it, as every neighborhood probably has a Chinesse food restaurant on the same level. read more

I have ordered from Taste Queen previously and thought their food was delicious. However, today, I noticed a slightly hard/see through ball in my rice. It looked clear with a tiny black dot. It didn't look like rice at all. Upon further research, I believe it is a WEEVIL EGG..... which are found in grains (such as rice) when not stored properly. It's so hard to find good Chinese food these days but this place is great. Excellent lemon chicken, boneless white meat chicken fried perfectly and sweet lemon sauce. Pork fried rice has lots of lean pork in it. Wonton soup is excellent. Bonus - you get hot tea and fried noodles with hot mustard and duck sauce- a rarity these days. The girl practically threw the tea cups and flatware at us. Just piled the forks and spoons on the end of the table and says nothing. Miserable. What is this, McDonald's? The broth in the chicken soup was absolutely flavorless. The Moo Shu, which used to be the best around, was also flavorless and seemed to have a lot less chicken than it used to. I've only gotten take out from them and I'm not sure if they got new cooking staff, but the food was not good the final time we ordered. It was OK every time before but this time was the final straw. I say ok, because all american chinese food tastes identical. My orange beef was dripping in grease and the coating was soggy. That means the oil wasn't proper temperature and the batter absorbed it. Gave the order over the phone & when it was brought to me wrong dish was sent . I contacted them & they replaced it . The chips and duck sauce that came to the table were good, I love the extra large ones and they serve those here. I ordered the Chicken w/ Cashew Nuts lunch special. This came with choice of rice and soup. The wonton soup was also well seasoned and the meat in the wontons was flavorful. My chicken with cashews was good as well. It was made with celery, carrots, mushrooms and zucchini. The sauce was delicious and the portion was just right. But the fried rice wasn't desirable at all. Generally speaking, the Chinese restaurants in the far Northeast Philadelphia have been disappointing. Most seem to have settled into a "good enough" attitude when it comes to their kitchens, with little effort for excellence, nor originality. It is regrettable that the locals have few decent choices until they are prepared to travel farther down Bustleton, or all the way to Chinatown for a good meal. One of the few exceptions to such poor performances is Taste Queen on Krewstown Road, just off Grant Avenue. We settled in there for dinner late last week, and found it to be refreshingly concerned about quality cooking and satisfied knowledgeable customers. While it is accurate to called the "Queen" a study in pink as others mention, that eye-irritant is soon forgotten when dinner is brought to the table. We were able to request a higher heat quotient than normal from our Hunan Chicken and Orange Beef, and actually have it prepared as we wished. Both were large platters, with extra spicy black bean sauce on the chicken, and real Szechuan peppers mixed in with the tender beef. They were so satisfying that we did not need to ask for more sesame oil or chili sauce. Very good job! What was even more surprising was their rendition of Pumpkin Soup, on their Specials Board. It was rich, creamy and very fresh. Someone in the kitchen knows a thing or two about non-Chinese cuisine. Service was friendly and prompt, and the server didn't mind me practicing my baby Chinese. She was quite amused. Finally an above average Chinois joint within range of home that meets our expectations for good Middle Kingdom dishes. Return guaranteed. read more

This is a pretty tasty option while in the Krewstown/Sun Valley area. I always find myself here strictly for lunch. My go to is their bean curd and veggie soup for two, or in my case, for one hungry veg-head. I ask for some of their chili oil for an added kick to the big comforting bowl of fresh goodness. It's a simple dish, but really something I crave often. The fried chips here are by far my favorite of any Chinese restaurant. They sell them by the bag also. That is VERY dangerous. If you can make it here for lunch, I think you'll be fairly happy with your meal. They offer a variety of lunch specials which are priced from just under $5, to just over $6. They include your choice soup, wonton, hot and sour or egg drop (no veg substitutes unfortunately) and a side or either white, brown or fried rice. The meals are sized appropriate for the price and really are enough. The place is also empty during the day so there's definitely no wait. Makes for a great, quick stop if you need to be in and out, or a leisurely lunch of you so choose because no one is rushing you. They also offer fresh rolled sushi which I have never tasted here as well as daily specials listed on a board as you enter. The pumpkin soup has me intrigued, but I have yet to indulge. The food comes out extremely quick and service is always fine. The servers don't speak a ton of English, but it has never been an issue. If you're nearby, I say try it! My family has been coming for years and have always enjoyed their meals each and every visit. I am Chinese, I ubderstand people put cornstarch while cooking, however, the chef from this restaurant put way too much cornstarch in the Buddhist delight which make it not only look sticky but also taste disgusting. So I called the restaurant, whoever pick up my call is so unpatience. They won't give me refound and tell me to complain on Uber eat.
