The best polish food in the city!! Authentic and tastes amazing! Very friendly personnel short time waiting for food!

    Rosa J.

Rosa J. has been curious about this place. Unfortunately, the current Yelp page and reviews didn't really help her understand what kind of place this is. I didn't see "Tasty" on the sign, but this modifier is absolutely accurate to describe the food hubby and I had this evening. By the way, the prices are quite reasonable: $14 and some change for two (2) orders of cheese/mushroom zapiekanki and one (1) bowl of zurek (soup). Please have green bills ready because your plastics won't grant any access to the fast, delicious, and economical Polish food here. What's a "zapiekanka?" Baguette is the bread as the base. Depending on what ingredients you want on top, it can be loaded with veggies, mushroom, and cheese. It's finished off with sprinkles of green onion and drizzle of "ketchup-like" sauce. I LOVED the soup. The main components were leeks, boiled eggs, and sausages. It's heartier than the cure-all chicken noodle soup. I saw the photo of zurek on Yelp and wanted to try it. Well, great move, Ms. Rosa J.! The studious Rosa jotted down the other two (2) menu items to try in the future: knysza (pocket bread) and gofry z owocami (waffle with fruit). There were a few patrons having the waffle topped with fruit. It appeared appetizing, so I will keep that in mind. Where's it located? It's within the commercial plaza south of the Belmont Central free public parking lot. Their business hours are Mondays to Saturdays, 10am to 9pm (closed on Sundays). I know I've written longer reviews than this one, yet my i-pad mini has a strong resistance to the Polish language and kept on auto-correcting the technical terms. I've got to go now to end this struggle!

Holy zapiekanki! This small Polish sandwich shop is as European as it gets! I've had veggie zapiekanki twice and I absolutely love them! It's a pretty busy business strip so expect to not find parking. ***cash only***

Chicken kynsza (hope I'm not misspelling that)

I first had the chicken kynsza here about 8 years ago. I had it again yesterday and it tasted like the first time I tried it. The quality is consistent and the sandwich was really good, huge and cheap. Definitely worth the try.

Zapiekanka with ham and mushrooms. So GOOD!

Best zapiekanki on this side of the pond! Not a lot of seating room inside so it's best to order out. I wish they had more locations.

The Chicago hot dog was exactly what I hoped for, but the surprise was the fried shrimp. Easily some of the best I've had. Crispy, flavorful, and good enough that I'd return just for the shrimp. The customer service was also excellent. They were patient, friendly, and helpful while we figured out what to order. That kind of service matters, especially when you're visiting a neighborhood spot for the first time. With its proximity to Comiskey Park, I'm sure Jeff's is no secret to Chicago locals. But it rarely shows up on the national lists telling visitors where to eat in Chicago. It should. The restaurant itself has an older, small diner feel with plenty of character. Nothing fancy or manufactured for tourists, just a longtime neighborhood spot serving really good food. Chicago has plenty of famous restaurants. Jeff's Red Hots deserves to be one of the places visitors hear about before they arrive.

We arrived just after they opened on a Saturday morning and had no issues with parking. Charly's was not opened for more the 10 minutes, and they already had 8 to go orders being cooked when we were at the counter. The menu is very basic; 5 burgers, a Polish Sausage,  and a Chicago Style hot dog. You can upgrade your burger by adding an additional patty, bacon, an egg - cooked to order, or cheese sauce. You can make it a meal with hand cut fries and a drink. All drinks are cans or bottles so no refills at $3. You can upgrade your fries by adding Cajun seasoning or cheese sauce. The also have something call Charly Fries (loaded fries with a hamburger patty) at $14. I went with the Charly Burger: two six-ounces beef with bacon (90/10) patties, cheese, grilled onions, and a pickle. Apparently, all their burgers meals are served in a Styrofoam containers, even if you are eating there. As it turns out that was a good thing as there was no way I could eat this whole thing. $15 burger and you have a second or even third meal for home. We were there for around an hour and all their other customers were to go orders. There are two tables for four people and a row of stools along the window (you can look at all the lemmings at McDonald's right across the street while you enjoy your substantial juicy burger).  The Cajun seasoning was a tasty upgrade, next time I will try the Cajun seasoning WITH the cheese sauce. The atmosphere was rustic and basic. The staff were nice and genuinely happy to see us eating in the restaurant. Absolutely coming back.

After looking over the menu, I had it narrowed down to a couple of burgers, then the lady told me about the Burger of the Month named "Good Night Irene" which has a panko breaded crab cake with pico de gallo and a spicy remoulade on top of half pound in-house chuck and pork belly blend burger patty. Thats all I needed to hear, so I order the burger and the garlic Parmesan fries. While I waited for my food, I noticed how cool the place was. Rock and Roll memorabilia all through the restaurant. They had a Heart concert playing on the screens. Even the bathroom had rock and roll quotes on the walls. I received my food and after the first bite I was in burger nirvana. The crab cake was crisp and seasoned well. The burger was cooked to a perfect medium. They combined for one hell of a delicious bite. The remoulade and pico de gallo had a nice zip that pulled the entire burger together. The garlic Parmesan fries were crisp and fluffy with just the right amount of garlic and Parmesan. My food also came with a delicious Almost Famous butter cookie. It would have been awesome with a milkshake. They have milkshakes on the menu, but I didn't order one. At the end of my meal I had to tell the gentleman behind the counter that it was an awesome burger. All in all, great burger, great service, great music and a great vibe. I'm looking forward to the next Burger of the Month.

Always happy to support and tell others about the really good local spots. Thats what makes the local spots the real gems of our communities we can literally walk to them. The high cost of produce and groceries keep rising and it might be more expensive to buy those ingredients and provide the same level of quality. But the cost of respect and appreciation towards your loyal customers hasn't, and it shouldn't! Throughout the years I felt the quality had been declining but my old man loved them so I kept coming back. Neighbors would ask why I keep getting the subs and would all say the same thing "used to be good". Service has never been amazing, but I don't think expect it to, I'm just here for a sub. It tells me more about the owners/managers than I need to know. When the employees talk out loud about personal issues with equipment being busted or things being held together with duct tape don't exactly scream out safety, quality, or freshness. Even then I can get past it. When I see a business like this whose quality has declined, whose employees are aloof and allowed to treat the preparation and sanitation of food in such an unprofessional manner......Well, that tells me more about how you feel toward me as a customer. Maybe you're bigger than my favorite little sub shop that I used to tell everyone about. Maybe you don't need my dollars, or maybe I didn't spend enough to be treated with respect, I should've spent more. Either way it's obvious, you don't need my money. I'll be happy to take it elsewhere.
