    4. Curry Flavor Hot Soup
    Austin W.

Yesterday evening was my first time at this Tasty Pot location in Berkeley. I've been to Tasty Pot all around the Bay and the service is on par with any other location. Ordering is done via a QR code on the table, but you have to pay your bill by calling over a staff member. I ordered the curry beef hotpot, while my wife ordered the lamb hotpot. Despite the restaurant being pretty full, our orders arrived quickly. Throughout our meal, a waiter stopped by multiple times to check if we wanted more broth added to our hotpot, or more water. The hotpot itself is large enough that even the most hungry diners will be satisfied, especially with the extra large serving of rice that comes with the hotpots (you can optionally choose vermicelli noodles instead). There's a wonderful variety of ingredients in each of the hotpots, with a good balance between seafood, meat, and vegetables. If there's a specific ingredient you're craving and it's not listed as being included in the hotpot, you also have the option to add it on during the ordering process for a pretty minimal fee. The reason why my review is not higher is because the meat quality really fell short. For example, the lamb in the hotpot was completely shredded and didn't have an enjoyable texture, almost like it had been carelessly and forcibly scraped off from a un-defrosted slab of meat out of the freezer. Asides from the meat, I really enjoyed the strong curry flavor in my hotpot and appreciate that you can choose your spice level in the app when ordering. I went with medium and it was the perfect level for me -- enough to get me sweating, but not not spicy enough to make the meal not enjoyable. For $40 after tax and tip for the two of us, Tasty Pot is an affordable and chill dining option in the downtown Berkeley area. 3.5 stars, but rounding down to a 3.

very solid place :-) i always come in when im craving something soupy as i like to get the beef hot pot! it comes w a lot of toppings and actually quite a lot of beef as well. usually i opt to get the rice as a side since theres vermicelli included in the pot already (which is a big plus because i get the best of both worlds). its basically self seating when it's empty and you can just scan the qr code to order so not that much interaction is needed - i usually will maybe ask for an extra broth refill when its running low or for them to turn off the heat i wish they had caps for their sauce containers for when i do take out :( bc i love their sesame sauce... overall, v yummy easy meal (though i think i still prefer boiling point)

Food: This is a different branch I've been and the quality is pretty stable. I had Taiwanese Supreme Spicy Soup with medium spicy this time, and if you're an Asian, this spiciness is right around the level you can enjoy the hot soup. Very delicious! Service: Order with QR Code, and the staff is helpful as well. Ambiance: the restaurant is more of a medium-small spot with casual vibe but clean and nice. Definitely a place for students after school.

===TL;DR=== - #3 Cheesy milk hot soup w/ vermicelli - #1 Beef hot soup w/ rice ===TMI=== First time at this location, no wait for a Saturday afternoon. Pretty spacious place with a hole in the wall feeling since it's off the main street. They serve you with their house classic green iced tea and you order off their QR code. I got my favorite cheesy milk pot but in the very spicy level! Milky glory, -salivates-. If you're lactose intolerant, highly recommend the beef pot, a signature classic that you can't go wrong with. Self served sauce is on the side for easy access if you want to amp up the flavors. Overall, I still like their other chains more.

Came here during lunch on a Sunday. It wasn't so busy and I got seated immediately. You order through a QR code. I go the cheesy milk soup and got a few things removed that I don't eat. I added ramen and egg. The dish comes with vermicelli noodles, so I thought when I ordered ramen it would sub out the other noodle. Unfortunately, there were vermicelli noodles already in my bowl. I like vermicelli, but not with hot pot. The downside is they do not do substitutions here. Also, the price is on the high side. I paid $24 for everything. For that price, I can grab ayce hot pot for less on a weekday.

The perfect cozy meal for a cold, windy day in Berkeley. I really enjoyed the experience of individual hot pots. Solid ingredient variety and generous portion size, enough to last me two meals. Additional customization would be nice, but I was happy with what was provided.

    Taiwanese Supreme Spicy Hot Soup

Friend was in the mood for soup, so we got soup! Came for lunch and got seated in their upstairs section. Lunch comes with sweet tea which is a great addition to the meal. I ordered their Taiwanese Supreme Spicy Hot Soup (still not spicy enough for me!) while my friend opted for their lamb hot soup. They were both sizable portions and stayed hot through the meal thanks to the burner underneath. Food was tasty and each soup has a wide variety of ingredients. They have soybean paste on the side which always elevates a hotpot meal. The atmosphere is pretty casual and just slightly cramped, but worth it since there's not many other comparable options in the area. They also come around with refills for soup when it evaporates/you eat too much of it.

I didn't feel like cooking so I got this tasty seafood hot pot delivered to me ! It arrived piping hot and exactly as I had ordered it online. You can get these hot pot bowls with either rice, vermicelli noodles or ramen noodles and you can request the degree of hotness you would like but keep in mind.. the mild is still pretty zippy for me at least. The broth was very tasty and I had leftovers for the next day! Definitely will be going back !

    Beef hot soup

Good experience and the first time we've ever had hot pot come with everything already in it. The beef hot soup had really great flavors with so many things in the soup. The Sichuan hot soup was SUPER spicy; too spicy for me, but great if you like very, very, very spicy foods. I would have preferred to quick dip and cook the beef because it got overcooked from sitting in the soup for too long. Other items in the soup were great like the fish balls, meat balls, imitation crab meat, veggies, and vermicelli noodles. There was a side sauce that was really yummy for dipping the beef and other meats. Service was pretty good and quick. Water and soup was refilled consistently. Ambiance felt like a mom & pop shop making it feel very authentic and fun.

Came to the Berkeley location for the first time. Pretty close to campus, cozy space. The portion size is very good for the price. My friend and I are both very full. It comes with a side or rice or vermicelli, but each pot already has some so it's a nice extra. You order with a QR code and they come around to refill soup and water. Service was also pretty good.

It was our first time, but the process was pretty straightforward grab a bowl and tongs by the entrance and start picking from a great variety of meats, veggies, and more. I went with the signature spicy hot pot broth (medium spice), and I highly recommend it so flavorful! Prices were fair for the quality and amount of food, and I'd definitely come back. Only downside was that a few ingredients in the freezer weren't fully stocked, but honestly, still an easy 5 stars from me.

"Hot Pot, Mongolian Grill style, in downtown Berkeley"…read more Came here on Black Friday evening at 6:45pm, and it was pretty empty in the restaurant. The place is BRIGHTLY lit, but I confess I would have been confused on protocol without coming with two past diners. There are some large bowls on the side and tongs, and you stack the meats, veggies, and starches from the adjacent fridge/ freezers in the bowl as you walk in, then hand it to the cashier and note which broth you'd like. They then cook it up and bring it out to you. Because they cook it with materials you picked (rather than then giving you ingredients and you cooking it), that's why I call it "Mongolian grill style". The process was a bit difficult-- I don't know Mandarin, and some choices were only labeled in Mandarin (or were clearly mislabeled). For instance, I saw something that looked like fake crab meat sticks, but later discovered it had some sort of meat filling that was not obvious. I picked as best I could though, and everything looked to be in good shape/ quality. The choices were broad-- many veggies and meats, some starches like ramen or other noodles, etc. I got the signature spicy with a setting at mild, and it had some zing but was very doable for me. One of my dining partners had the tomato and asked for "no" space, and she got what she requested-- said it tasted like Campbell's tomato soup. Meanwhile others with us got the Sichian spicy and were sweating hard. The food took maybe 10 minutes to come out, which was fine. The price was about what you'd expect for the downtown Berkeley area-- not "cheap" but reasonable for what it was-- cost about $150 for the 5 of us. Overall, I enjoyed it. Not something I see myself craving and running back to, but a decent choice in the area.

Cool to see a restaurant stick around for that long. We got to the restaurant right when it opened for lunch at 11:30 on Sunday. Free street parking on Sunday! I thought everything was solid top to bottom, but here is my ranking in descending order: Braised Eggplant Tofu Clay Pot - I generally like this dish everywhere and they have a good version on this here - seasoned well, tender eggplant, and nice texture on the tofu Salt & Pepper Chicken Wings - non-traditional "salt & pepper" - thick coating of tempura-like batter, very peppery (black pepper), and wings set on a bed of sauteed onions. Sesame Bread with Green Onion - tasty, but unlike other "da bing" I've had. This was on the thin side, meaning you have a lot more crispy outside compared fluffy inside. This was also lighter on the green onion. Classic Shrimp & Chive Dumpling - can't go wrong with dumplings - an order comes with 12 dumplings, each filled with big pieces of shrimp. I liked the texture but it is a little different - looser filling instead of a solid meat/veg ball on the inside. Original Braised Pork Noodle Soup - I liked the flavor of the soup and noodles. There was a ton of meat (diced) but they were on the tough side.

It was pretty busy with not a TON of tables, but the service was still fairly quick. Our rolls came out faster than our appetizers, but at least we got everything eventually. We also ordered their vegan bao buns & they were SO delicious! Super doughy, & the stuffing was seasoned really well. Their vegetable tempura wasn't bad. Didn't have the same assortment of vegetables most places have, but it still tasted pretty good. Ours primarily had yam, broccoli, & green beans. For our rolls, we ordered: The Cha-ya Roll (The entire sushi roll, filled with asparagus, yam, avocado, and carrots, is lightly battered and deep-fried, Tempura style. Served with special house sauce.) This one was my personal favorite! We also got the Vegan Roll (A large roll with spinach, atsuage tofu, cucumber, broccolini, pickled burdock, seasoned shiitake and campy gourd, and pickled ginger.) We've had Cha-Ya roll, Vegetable Tempura roll, Agedashi tofu, Mushroom soup, Gyoza, and probably a few more dishes and all ha amazing. The Bao bun was a pass. The setting is good - intimate and some window tables. The bad - the host is a snob and service is slow since she's also the server. She's also not comfortable with English, which is fine for me as an immigrant myself, but it does cause some communication issues. The place doesn't accept cards - only cash (and Venmo). Not to be presumptuous, but when I see a restaurant accepting just cash I always wonder how accurately they pay their taxes? The ugly - we had a terrible (mildly racist) experience on our second visit. First as we sat down, the host got 3 forks for us. When she came back, we asked for 3 chopsticks. She responded with a tone "are you going to use chopsticks?". Like, what was she implying - brown people can't use chopsticks? "Yes" I said to which she pointed to a sign on the wall and responded in broken English "we have a policy". I read the flyer she pointed to and figured that you can get either a fork or chopsticks. So, why didn't she ask us upfront if we want chopsticks or forks? Sigh. I didn't want to confront her about it or be rude since I wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt. So we let this chopsticks incident get past us, started enjoying the food. She never came to ask if we were doing okay, which is fine by me since we didn't really need anything from her. As we were feeding our kid, she came by and dropped the bill on the table. Didn't ask if we wanted anything more. Didn't ask if food was okay. As we looked at the bill, we noticed a 15% mandatory tip. I checked the menus and the flyers - there's a mandatory 18% tip for parties of 6 people, but nothing below that. I went and politely inquired about it to which she said "well it's a restaurant", I pointed to the flyer that said parties of 6 people have a mandatory tip, to which she didn't respond at all, mumbled something, turned and went back into the kitchen! Extremely rude! Crazy thing - last visit a few weeks ago I didn't get mandatory tip on the bill and I tipped 15%. This time we had our kid with us, and whenever we dine with kids, it's always 20% tip or up, so I would've tipped that anyway. The racist and rude behaviour isn't worth putting up with. Such a shame.

I am glad we did because I was not disappointed. The place was busy but the service was prompt and excellent. We had ordered three dishes to share family style with rice. First off let me start by saying the portions are generous. All three of the dishes were a hit but to me the star of the show was the garlic chicken. The sauce was excellent! If spicy is your thing then order the beef, it was loaded with peppers! Finally the walnut prawns were nice counter to the garlic and peppers. We also ordered steamed rice to go with the meal. This was an excellent choice and we will most definitely be back.

Tonight I was craving good local chinese food and decided to give this place another try. I don't know why. I always felt bad with each previous sad serving. It was terrific! The order was ready on time. The containers were bulging with food when before the servings were getting skimpier and skimpier. The chow fun was not swimming in oil. The cumin lamb was no longer 90% peppers but a generous portion of lamb and a good ratio of peppers. The crispy chicken appetizer was delightful. The dry green beans had a snap. It was such a complete reversal from the last experiences that I'm glad I went back and we will certainly continue to satisfy our Szechuan cravings with this place. I had braced myself expecting in these dire times with many food places closing or gasping with high costs, a less than stellar experience. What a wonderful surprise!
