I was pretty disappointed with my experience at Take Eat Easy. I tried the curry fish, fish siu mai, sticky rice, and roast duck rice bowl, and everything felt like it had just been reheated rather than freshly made. It was especially disappointing to find out that some of the items seemed like factory-produced frozen food you could easily buy at a grocery store. The Milk Tea here are priced at $4.25, and Honey Lemon Tea at $4.50. But if you order in a set (with an accompanying food order), you can add either of those beverages for $1.99, and the portions are *large*. They also have a Saturday deal, where you can get some of their most popular dishes for $3 off their normal price. By far, my favorite orders have been the Sichuan Spicy Chicken Rice and the Sichuan Spicy Beef Tripe Rice. For $13.99 and $14.99 respectively, you get a generous portion of the most juicy and succulent chicken and beef tripe, with a side of cucumbers to balance out the spiciness flavor. I heard about this counter from Cal students, who told me that the lunch crowds are so large that it's a good strategy to show up at 11AM. They gave me the name "Gangli (港丽)" for this establishment. Their description made me think of the food court in lower level of the student union, but in fact Take Eat Easy is on the ground level of Eshleman Hall. I noticed recently that 港丽 is open on Saturdays but not very busy then. Even on Cal Day, I was able to order with no wait. On the advice of friends, I got the duck special, which turned out to include a large amount of rice, two pieces of broccoli and a decent amount of bone-in duck. The duck was pretty greasy, but there was enough rice that I didn't feel grossed out by the grease. The dish included a small thimble of sauce; there are nearby packets of soy sauce in case of further need. The food was OK, but well below the standards of Great China, to cite one nearby place. Although Take Eat Easy was described to me as "Hong Kong-style," the closest match to my recent experience in Hong Kong was my meal in a student restaurant at the HK University of Science and Technology. Take Eat Easy is a great choice if you are nostalgic for authentic Chinese food but do not expect to return to China any time soon. This counter reminded me of my visit to an Ashley American Grill & Salad in Seoul: Ashley hits the spot if you miss the States and want to chow down on pizza, burritos and spaghetti. The shop owner packed up the bowl nice and full, told me he threw in a free extra egg, and asked me what beverage I wanted (included free with the bowl!). I said I'd skip the drink for today since I had plans to get boba later in the day but he insisted I have something as substitute. I left with a free banana and a smile Plus: This whole encounter took less than 5 minutes so if you've got a short lunch break, you won't have to worry about waiting! Food: This bowl was two meals worth of food for me!! The chicken was very soft and tender and the two sauces were the perfect balance - one is tangy and spicy while the other one is your traditional ginger scallion sauce. No, but I haven't come across another in Berkeley. It's a good gateway to HK style. It's just one flavor, sweetness adjustable, but still, this has depth. He makes it in front of you. It's not some sort of instant powder. It doesn't bring attention with new fancy gadgets and bling. It brings attention by being itself. Classics need not be altered. The HK milk tea is made fresh daily and comes in a disposable cup; I loved that the guy asked how sweet I would like my drink to be (I said 25% and that is just the right amount of sweetness honestly). Upon check-out, he gave me two free Hawaii caramel-covered milk chocolates. The owner is fluent in English & Cantonese...passionate about making/selling good food and treating the customers right. Food: The chicken bowls were good- not the best I've tasted (especially when I compare to those I've had in HK and some of the decent HK restaurants here in the Bay Area), but it will definitely satisfy your cravings & tummy. Large, tasty portions of chicken that come with sauces. THE CURRY FISH BALLS WERE AMAZING. Up to par with those I've had in HK...and among the best in spicy curry taste/portion size ($4.99 for like 10 balls) to other places that sell fish balls in the Bay Area. Visited at 530 pm on a Saturday. Ordered two meat dishes- were reheated meat and clumpy rice. Was told closing soon (though posted sign says 630 pm). Tea drinks were over sweet - and when I went back to state my cup was leaking- - had a crack along side - I was directed to use a free water cup- which were not available. You have to sit with all students studying in student admin building. I had the Hong Kong Style Milk Tea, which was very good and it's also significantly cheaper than other places you can get Milk Tea in Berkeley. I also had the Siu Mai and the Chiu Chow Dumplings, which, while it's not the best Dim Sum I've had, it's probably not fair to compare this small, hole-In-the-wall street food style spot to a large sit down Dim Sum Parlor. I highly recommend their food bowls for a quick meal in between class Food: I got the cha siu and roasted duck bowl and it came with an egg, broccoli, and rice. Whenever I go through Sather Lane, I have to get a Hong Kong Milk tea. It is cheap and one of the best milk teas I will never get tired of drinking. I have gotten the Hong Kong curry fish Balls, Roast Duck, and Unagi Don. The portion sizes are significant, and for the roasted duck, I even saved some for dinner. My favorite dish so far has been the Unagi Don. The Unagi was tenderly cooked superbly, and the sauce was flavorful. You can tell that the owners take pride in their dishes. This place is a no frills, comfort food dream. For $31, I got two plates (which honestly could be stretched out to 4 meals - the portions are generous!!) and 2 Hong Kong milk tea. The milk tea was soooo good - probably one of the best I've ever had. It's so simple - creamy and not too sweet - the best compliment to the meal. It's a one man show serving and ringing you up so service can be a bit slow but it's well worth the wait. Got the Singapore Chicken Rice and Fun Gou, plus lemon iced tea for drink. I grew up in Hong Kong and let me tell you the chicken rice is legit. The chicken is tender and flavorful, not dry like some other places. The sweet soy sauce and ginger scallion sauce that came with the order really enhanced the rice. You should try mixing them with the chicken and rice. The Fun Gou is shaped slightly different from the Dim Sum restaurant but the fillings are delicious. The skin is not too thick which is good. Also the peanuts in the filling are not cooked too soft which I really like. The lemon iced tea reminded me of the ones in HK. And the nicer owner put a lot of lemon slices in there Overall this is a great meal. It's such a hidden gem around the area. I'm so glad to have found it. Ambience of the store is extremely homey, and the snack selection has a variety of options that I haven't seen around since my childhood years. It seems as if they've also been expanding their offerings, as they were marketing their new dish - curry fish balls (with a few signs proclaiming more dishes to follow). The curry fish balls were very good, and were prepared extremely quickly! The curry used was the perfect blend of spicy and savory, and had seeped into the inside of the fish balls, which made for a nice blend of textures and flavors, in contrast to other similar dishes I had tried before, which simply coated the balls.
