TLDR; Hanam is among the very few artists in the area I'd trust to do any Hanzi/Hanja/Kanji characters, and his skill is amazing. Plus, this isn't even the best part At the close of one of the most horrid summers of my life, I wanted to commemorate what got me through this hard time. For reasons I won't get into here, I wanted to commemorate it with a tattoo of the character "無." I'm sure you've heard of bad Kanji/Hanzi/Hanja tattoos, so I looked all over the Portland metro area (by internet, naturally) for an artist who had actually had some experience writing Asian calligraphy. (As a practitioner of Asian calligraphy I knew what to look for.) It is surprising - uh, maybe not really - that there are folks in the area without training in 書道 who will try to execute such things anyway, and there's some really bad examples out there that they're actually promoting! Anyway, I found Hanam who does have the experience and background and skill to execute Asian character tattoos. He tolerated my changing mind, which I appreciate greatly. And the thing is, his skill set is immensely broader than Asian characters; if you want a street art tat he's probably the best in the area for that too, as well as manga styles. I just walked in to get a fine line tattoos. some artist was out but they decided to come back to do my tattoo. a lady who did it for me was Kimber and I highly recommend her !!! i checked mine for 2 or 3 times and she did it for me kindly. i told her to make it as fine as possible and she definitely made it!!! it took 2hours total include waiting time. printing on my body tool 15-20min. （i changed the place a little bit twice and that took a time) tattooing was approximately 10-15min. for me, it was not so long time. totally, this is amazing. i came here by bus to get a tattoo and that was absolutely great choice to choose. read more

My favorite shop to go to hands down. I've gotten almost all of my work done here by the same artist, Kim, and I've never been disappointed. The other two artists are very friendly and talented as well, so I'm glad that it's just the three of them again. I've gotten tattoos at a couple other shops in town (regrettably) and nothing compares to the professionalism and talent of Hawthorne Ink! They have a really cool atmosphere, the best music playing (plus they don't mind if I join in and sing loudly and off key) and such a unique style that keeps me wanting more. The artists have always been awesomely fair with pricing and I've never felt overcharged or hustled. I've even let a piece dry heal (not so much on purpose) and the artwork didn't get all fucked like other ones I've had done elsewhere, that's how I know Kim is doing it right. I'll always keep coming back until there's no open spaces left to tattoo! Thank you all at Hawthorne Ink for being such great people / friends to me and always making me feel welcomed / at home here. I walked in one day with a vague idea of what I wanted for a cover-up tattoo. Ryan helped me figure out what I wanted and he drew up a beautiful rose (City of Roses!!) to cover up my previous tattoo and then did it the same day; it only took about 3 and half hours and he was very fun to talk with, and didn't mind me rambling about brunch, politics, cats, etc. :) I would definitely recommend checking this place out--they make you feel at home and do a great job of making sure that you walk away satisfied. read more

Honestly disappointed with this place. I came here looking for Hawthorne Ink to find that this place has since changed both management and name. Had a few tattoos here about five years ago by a really cool guy who forgot to give me his card, and came to ask about a retouch on a piece close to my heart. Instead of being helpful by trying to help with the identity of the artist or anything at all(as he had been there for quite a while before new management came in and they could've crossed paths), she bluntly stated that they would charge me and basically treat it like a new piece. For taking over a pretty popular tattoo spot on Hawthorne, you'd think they would want to keep some of that location's client base. All I needed was a touch up on some lines, didn't need to be sketched up and done anew, it's a simple trace that I obviously would've still tipped the artist for on their time. I won't be back. I can find other artists that will be more helpful and kind to potential clients. read more

I hate that this place has one review, and it's negative. I would like to fix that. A little over a year ago, I came in to get a rib piece done by Kimber, after falling in love with her artwork. I was very impressed with her work, and she was very laid back and easy to talk to, and I felt comfortable being tattooed by her. She works quickly, and does an outstanding job. I will never let anyone else tattoo me ever again. She is my go to artist, and has done 4 tattoos for me so far. Toby and Memo are the other artists there, and they (as well as Kimber) all have their own unique styles. Everyone there takes their art very seriously, as well as their shop. And they will always work with you so you are 100% satisfied with your tattoo. I spend a lot of time in this shop, as I sometimes work the counter when they have specials. I decided while I was in Portland visiting family I wanted another tattoo. I googled a few different places to see how welcoming they were to walk ins, and this place definitely topped the list. I walked in on a Saturday afternoon and was helped right away, Jake was my artist. He was super friendly and everyone in the shop made me feel very welcomed. I looked through his book and picked a design. He was super chill and easy to talk to which always makes getting a tattoo a bit easier. While I was getting a tattoo a young girl walked in with her friend, also without an appointment, and wanted to get her first tattoo. The female artist helping her was so nice to her &her friend, and helped her feel at ease which I thought was sweet.
