Best scene on Shem Creek! A bit pricey. Don't go if you're overly hungry, but the drinks and deck area are a great draw.

I have heard rave reviews but was nonplussed. The pastrami salmon dip tasted like lard; the liquid center of the S'mores cupcake was a gelatinous chocolate mass; and the meat and cheese plate was so-so. The brussel sprouts were delicious. Tavern and Table is one of the best "chill" yet fun places to eat. It's a bit nicer and a little pricey (not too expensive though). The back bar on the water is a top 5 place in Charleston to hang out and just wind down. And the brisket mac-and-cheese might be one of the best things I've eaten in Charleston (came in second in the Mac Off). Great place to go! read more

Recommend by a friend in the area and our hotel concierge. Beautiful restaurant with great waterfront dining. Cocktail and local brew were good. Artichoke and crab dip was good, but kinda bland. Homemade pita chips were good, but I don't know what the fuss is about them. Bang Bang Shrimp was really good. Peel and eat Shrimp were kinda soft, so the texture was not good. Cocktail sauce was good. Kids Mac and cheese was sold as homemade and not a cheese sauce. Ummmm not homemade like real southern Mac n cheese. It was a cheese sauce, homemade white cheese sauce, so yeah not yellow sauce. Homemade chips on kids meal tasted burnt, so we asked for apples. They were warm (not supposed to be) and mealy. The staff was nice. The view very pretty. Beautiful restaurant and location. Food was ok. Probably wouldn't go back or suggest other than a cocktail. read more

Great place. Pleasant staff and interesting menu. Went with two other couples during happy hour. We started with drinks and appetizers. The pimento cheese spread and fried deviled eggs were excellent. All six of us really enjoyed our entrees. The shrimp and grits I had were outstanding, as was the seasonal desert we shared. We came here to sit by the water and have a drink. Bar was very limited. The waitress made a suggestion on a drink and said if we did not like it, she would bring something else. The drink was Black and Blue Mule and it was disgusting! Burned and tasted really bad! When I told her 3 of us tasted it and it was obviously mixed wrong. When we got the bill, she charged for the drink and did not offer an alternate drink! When we asked why we were charged she said they told her we still had to pay. Walked in optimistic. Decor was right out of restoration hardware. Menu was eclectic but I wasn't deterred. It was amateur hour when it came to service but hey a new restaurant gets a pass right. Then I got my food. Everything had an identity crisis. The attempt at being chic by pairing saltys and sweets was painfully obviously and a real palate killer. Popcorn was soggy and awful. Oysters were so rich the flavor of the oyster was nonexistent. Flatbread was bland, undercooked and underwhelming. Had dinner at this place thinking it was a family atmosphere. It was more of a Bar type crowd. We were seated in a corner away from the bar but it was still very loud. Upon leaving there was group of about 8 people leaving and one of the girls was so intoxicated they were practically carrying her out. Once we were able to get past them and proceeded down the stairs, there was another group hanging out at the bottom of the landing sitting and standing on the steps being loud and vulgar. I had to say excuse me several times just to get by them. No management around anywhere. My friend has trouble walking from a foot injury and they wouldn't move so she could hold on to the rail to get down the steps. I visited last Friday evening and was excited to see that they were still serving dinner at 9:30 p.m. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and the crowd was mature and energetic. I was starving and ordered the Pan Seared Scallops for $33, which when combined with taxes and a 20% tip, ends up costing more than $40. I don't mind paying for a delicious meal but was truly shocked when the plate came out with 3 scallops. In my opinion, there should have been 5 or 6 scallops on the plate at that price point. Sunday brunch brought back a string of memories for me. I visited Tavern and Table for Mother's Day. Around 40 years ago I went to the same location when it was the Trawler Restaurant, one of the only places to go back in "the day". I had fond memories but really it was a glorified Fried Seafood joint like RBs and some of the others on the creek. Back then Charleston only had about 5 "fine dining" options and this was one of them. Mother's Day was their first day ever serving Brunch I believe and we were quite impressed. I had the Chilaquiles, which was red & green chili pork, corn tortilla, queso fresco, sour cream, cilantro, with a perfectly cooked baked egg. We did not have a reservation but we were the first people to get there for a 11am opening and were easily able to sit at the bar and got the best seats at the outside bar. Great spot with a nice breeze coming through the entire time. We had 5 people with us and the others got different meals including the T & T Omelet, and the Toad in the Hole. I had bites of each and the potatoes with the T & T were impeccable but the Omelette tasted too healthy. I like my veggies a little more cooked but it seemed like a good healthy choice. The Toad in the Hole was real nice and my sister was happy with that. We had a great view of the creek the entire meal along with great service by the bartenders as well. Good drink suggestions on the brunch menu which did not go to waste. Our group tried the Bloody Mary, the Thai Bellini, and the Man-Mosa which was probably the best. My sister felt a little funny getting a Man-mosa but it was great, refreshing, and really a good drink for brunch. We plan on coming back. Really a great spot and brought back a flood of memories and the food was probably 10 times better than the old Traweler Restaurant of days gone by.. read more

Ate here for the first time yesterday at lunch and had the short rib grilled cheese. It was absolutely amazing and I'll definitely be back! The menu had a lot of great options, however I didn't see where sides were specified and failed to ask when I placed my order as I was in a meeting. My sandwich came with potato chips which were good, but the fries looked so much better! I just had water to drink and the glass was very small, never got a refill. First, the positives; Creative menu, nice, new interior. Obvious that they spent a lot of money on the interior. Will be great to be able to sit creekside when it gets warmer. Very busy bar area. Now the negatives; service was slow and everything was done wrongly. Our entree's came to us maybe 30 seconds after they delivered our appetizers. When we questioned the timing, the response was "well, do you want us to keep your entree's under the heat lamp until you're ready? As if anyone would want a fish dish sitting under a heat lamp for 20 minutes! The whole fish was delicious, but over priced at $40.00. One of the floor managers came over to see us and discuss the unfortunate timing of our meal. We thought that he was offering us a bottle of wine on the house. We said that we didn't need a whole bottle, maybe just two glasses of your house Pinot. The bill came, and those two glasses of wine were on the bill! Thanks a lot! Hint: Don't accept a seat in the smaller dining room. The acoustics are terrible. we had to shout to each other, yet we could hear every word from the table across the aisle. In all fairness, after seeking out Andy (one of the owners) he did the right thing and comped our drinks. So, I'll try it again because the food was very good, but I'll sit outside or in the main dining room. I suggest "boot camp" for the front of the house, but the back of the house seems to be humming. read more

My mother and I literally paid our bill and walked out of the restaurant after a few bites of our lunch entrees. We came in for lunch at 12:45 and it is now a little after 2pm. Very long wait for our appetizers and dreadfully long wait for our entrees. Restaurant was not busy. Beet salad was bland and the cheese was tasteless served with unripened tomatos and soggy beet chips. Soup was decent. Ahi tuna wrap (asked for no wrap) came out smothered in dressing to hide the greyish barely edibile tuna. Salad that accompanied tuna was wilted with dried out cucumbers. Fish tacos came covered in a Siracha like sauce that was uncomfortably spicy and defintely was not made in house. Fish was just a few bites of previously frozen mush. Server was very nice and accomodating. Not her fault. Typical tourist trap. Nice location. Nice decor. Crap food, cooked by a kitchen staff who cuts corners. Go elsewhere. read more

We stopped here for lunch because of the location with the view of Shem Creek. We sat outside hoping for the best view. Unfortunately, the design of the deck is such that there is a large rail at eye level, so one must stand up to enjoy the view if you are seated. The view may be better from the outside bar. That being said, the decor of this restaurant is stunning and suggested a much more upscale restaurant than what we were about to experience. Also, contributing to that expectation was the write-up about the chef in the menu. After reading about Chef Katie, I completely changed what I had planned to order from the Asian chicken salad ($14). I asked our erstwhile server about the house specialties and she suggested the roasted Brussels Sprouts($10), pimento cheese and bacon jam ($10), fire roasted oysters (market price) and proscuitto & fig flatbread ($16). I selected the Brussels sprouts and pimiento cheese and bacon jam. The Brussels Sprouts were in a flavorless, gloppy cream sauce that I tried to avoid since it was mostly in the bottom of the dish. I live in California now, but I grew up in the South and I loved pimiento cheese when I was growing up. You can't find it on a California menu, so I ordered it here. I could hardly find any pimiento in the cheese and no flavor. The bacon jam was not appetizing looking at all. It tasted about the same as it looked. What can I say about the Ritz crackers? They are what they are. My husband decided to stay with his original choice of fish and chips($11). Smart guy! They were edible. read more

While in town visiting friends we made our way to Tavern to Table. The decor in this place is beautiful its very rustic chic'. The drinks were really good but it took us three times to order our drinks because they kept running out of liquor for what we were ordering off their cocktail menu! The services was a little slow but then again I think that is what "low-country" living is all about. We're just not use to it but when the food did arrive everything was absolutely fantastic. Beautiful with unique dishes. We were here for brunch which has a delightful mix of sweet and savory choices. Our favorites were the shrimp and grits and the Madame Croque. We ordered a pitcher of mimosas which were very tasty. The shrimp and grits had a delicious kick in the sauce. While the Madame Croque was a great blend of flavors, some parts were burnt. A little disappointing when this is the entire meal. We were happy our friends invited us to join them here. Service was very good too. read more

Atmosphere is fantastic. We have fond memories of a former restaurant housed in the building and called, "The Trawler." Reserved a table outside, but the front desk didn't know of my request, even though I called back to confirm. Food was too salty, salty, salty. The view and overall appearance of this place is fantastic. Grab a cocktail, sit on the plush outdoor couches. Unfortunately, the food and the service need some work. We ordered all the small plates for our table. The sesame sticky wings were dry & over cooked. The burnt ends Mac & cheese was oddly sweet. The kung pao lettuce wraps had a bizarre consistency. The location is beautiful and the ambiance superb, the food on the other hand leaves much to be desired. We went there for the first time about a month after they opened. We loved everything about the place, except the food. Figured it may have just been the night so we tried it again this evening... Even worse this time around. Again the restaurant was beautiful and the appetizers were good but when it came time for the main dish there was nothing but disappointment with all six in our party. Advertised lump crabmeat dip showed no lumps and taste was off-putting/old. Lettuce wraps with kung pao sweetbreads looked great, and sweetbreads were crisp and spice level was good, but somebody let loose with the salt. Suggest lower-sodium soy and this could be a real winner. Grilled cheese and brisket sandwich was delicious -- hot, tender and a little bit of the onion jus added fine flavor to an already-terrific combination. read more

The food was delectable...cheese plate, fig and prosciutto flatbread, and Brussels all cooked and presented perfectly. We ate every bite. Our service from Derek and Cassandra at the bar was fantastic as well. We never waited for a drink and they made wonderful recommendations. Have visited twice - our first experience was great - we sat at the bar and enjoyed delicious food/drinks and exceptional service. Decided to bring my in-laws for dinner during their visit to Charleston. Made a reservation a few weeks ahead of time. Once we arrived, the hostesses ignored me for 5 minutes before finally getting our name. Our table was not ready until 10 minutes after the reservation time. Service was not acceptable - specials were read directly from a handwritten list, drinks were served 15 minutes after ordering, appetizers arrived 55 minutes after ordering and directly prior to the main course. The server had no interest in apologizing or offering any explanation. When pressed to explain, he simply said, "yes, it's been 45 minutes, I've timed it." No apologies. He did not ask if we'd like another drink. The food was mediocre. When he dropped off the check, there were again no apologies and no mention of thanks. When asked a question, he became incredibly defensive and rude. A $300 dinner should provide a much better experience and service. Extremely disappointed and will not be returning. read more

Went with a large group for a dual birthday party! Jammed packed on Friday night. Hostess, bartenders, and the wait staff were all great! Very nice renovations to the former restaurant. Amazing outside deck and bar area! Food was good, we tried almost everything on the menu. Kid's pizza, kid's mac and cheese, cornbread, deviled egg, pimento cheese and bacon jam, lobster beignets, mushroom flat bread, chicken wings, fried green tomato, kale and brussels salad, glazed cod, pollo a la brasa, chimmichurri salad, whole fish, and seared scallops. Mine was a to-go order that someone picked up for me, so I can't comment on the atmosphere of the restaurant but I can comment on the food. First I wanted the lettuce wraps because they sounded delicious until I found out what sweetbreads were (calf or lamb pancreas). Some people would find that very appealing but usually people who like that kind of meat are true meat lovers meaning whenever they eat out they more than likely are not going to order a lettuce wrap...so I was a bit confused as to why they chose that meat over let's say chicken. So I had to change my order to the BLT and then found out it is not a BLT, it is a wedge of lettuce with pork belly (my mom ordered this and said it was not good). Finally I settled on the fried chicken sandwich because you can never go wrong with those. The sandwich wasn't terrible but for the price it DEFINITELY was NOT worth it. also the breading separated from the chicken completely, leading me to believe they were frozen which is a huge no-no. Then as I'm eating I notice little hairs on the breading of the chicken...still grossed out by that. I will say the bleu cheese on the sandwich was on point and the duck fries were incredible. my fiancé ordered the butchers cut burger and it was not cooked the way he asked (which also happened to my mom a couple weeks ago when she dined here and ordered a burger). lastly, he said the bread was dry and if he was going to spend $16 on a burger it definitely wouldn't be here. My aunt said she enjoyed the kale and brussel sprouts though. I'm leaving this in hopes the owner/chef will read it and take it as constructive criticism. I would love to see this place thrive since it is very close to where I live. I hope they make the appropriate changes needed. read more
