The old western, general store front absolutely does not represent the amazing-ness that you will find inside!
    Deanna P.

Five stars doesn't seem sufficient for this hidden gem! Don't be fooled by the old, western, general store look of the outside. The inside is intimate and lovely with dim lighting and perfectly set tables. The absolute perfect way to spend a slow evening with plenty of conversation. Our party of six included two kiddos. The bread and butter that came out with our drinks was delectable. The adults all ordered seafood, which was fresh and prepared perfectly. My seafood casserole was unbelievable. My husband's fried oysters were the best we have ever had. As good as, or better than, dinner was the perfect peach sangria. I have never, ever had better sangria anywhere. And finally... dessert. We had cheesecake, which was expertly made with delicious sauces and whipped cream. Our waiter was attentive to our needs, friendly, and knew exactly when to return to our table. The food was all prepared perfectly. The atmosphere is one of a kind. Don't look any further for an amazing, unexpected place to enjoy good company and good food off the beaten path.

This was an amazing find! We were at Lake Anna Winery for the Renaissance faire. After the faire, we stopped by the visitor center, the guy that worked in there said we must try this place. It was 15 minutes away from where we were. I was sold after he said everything is good at this restaurant. When we first got here, from the outside it looked like one of those typical American restaurants. But the building was historical and the inside atmosphere was very nice and classic. I almost feel like we were so under dressed. All the tables were set and seem like a fine dining place. Our server was very friendly and helpful. she went over the special with us and was very attentive. Bang Bang shrimp was the appetizer on special. I am not exaggerating, this was the best BANG BANG dish I ever had. The crunchiness and sweetness was on point! I ordered the Casserole. It has baby lobster tails, crab meat, shrimp. The flavors were so tasty and all their entrees come with 2 sides. Even their fries was amazing! I don't know who the chef is. At the end of the day, I felt like I just ate at a 5 star restaurant and pay for a fair price. All their entrees price ranging from $17-$25. I would pay more for the quality and the taste of the food here. I had a great meal and definitely recommend give this place a try if you have within 10 miles radius.

So finally...we found it...the best restaurant in the Lake Anna area! From the moment we crossed over the railroad tracks and saw this little gem, to stepping inside the year 1837 to eating the food, we were hooked!!! Think the movie, "Fried Green Tomatoes"... "Whistle Stop Cafe"! Tavern on the Rail was actually a general store on the rail tracks/stop in 1837. It was remodeled some, though go downstairs to the pub and you will see the original ceiling and walls. The atmosphere and decor in Tavern are so great! Very Civil war era..ish! Loved the cloth tablecloths that are changed out after each customer leaves their table. Our server was very sweet and friendly and brought us a photo album with the Tavern's history as we were asking a lot about the history. I ordered the fried green tomato sandwich which had a slice of cheese and bacon. I did not eat the bread so I could eat my mashed potatoes. Both were amazing!! Hubby ordered the thinly sliced prime rib sandwich with potato salad. Sooo good!! When I saw the dessert tray I knew we had to share a piece of something. We (I) opted for the chocolate caramel turtle pie...chocolate ganache crust...homemade whipped cream on this decadently rich, amazing dessert. The prices are also very good. We were there for lunch...we will go back again...for lunch and for dinner! Cannot wait and are so excited to have found this wonderful gem.

First time here and cannot wait to come back! Service is outstanding. The owner is very friendly and answered all questions we had. My meal was amazing. Grilled shrimp skewers, mashed potatoes and broccoli. It was all cooked perfectly. Looks can be deceiving, upon walking in I was pleasantly surprised. You'd be ok dressing casual here or dressed up.

Only giving 4stars because it's slightly too expensive for us. The food was good, but the environment and people were what made the experience. Everyone was so nice and welcoming. We had the chilled shrimp cocktail for an appetizer and it came out quickly and was very good! The cocktail sauce was perfect, not too much ketchup but not too spicy either. My husband had the roast beef special, it was a little tougher then he would have liked, but the french fries totally made up for it! He couldn't stop bragging about them! Overall our experience was great and we will certainly be returning!

A great experience. Service was excellent and food was delicious. Portions were more than ample. We greatly enjoyed our dinner here and if we are back in the area we would definitely eat here again.

It took about 15-20 mins for the bartender to get to us, she did acknowledge us before then tho. They should probably have 2 bartenders on weekends; one on well and the other serving guests. Eventually we were able to give our orders. I ordered a blueberry basil martini with vodka, my husband got a pineapple ginger drink (I think). My drink was ok, the basil was over powering tho. My husband liked his. For an appetizer I ordered the sausage lentil soup, it was really amazing. The flavor was savory and the sausage was minced so you didn't have any huge pieces. For dinner I had the saffron chicken ragu. I enjoyed this pasta. The pasta isn't home made but you can tell it's fresh (not dried out before cooking); It reminded me of a cheesy spaghetti, the chicken is minced as well so it's not like chopped/sliced chicken breast. My husband ordered the summer pasta. I liked that one as well. It had whole garlic Cloves, which I love garlic, and a fresh light flavor to it. For dessert we ordered the vanilla bean crème brûlée, no complaints there. The restaurant itself is small, a bit loud since it was busy, and you'll definitely need some patience on a busy night. Overall, I'd def go back if we're near the area.

Stopped here on a road trip headed down I-95, convenient location just off the highway. Food, atmosphere, and service were all excellent. Menu has a great variety but isn't overwhelming. Excellent wine list and selection of beers, and mixed drinks, as well as appetizers and deserts. We had cheese steak egg rolls with fries. The specials were what we ordered for dinner: Lobster Ravioli- great portion of lobster meat with a creamy sweet pink sauce; and the AHI tuna special with a really nice red sauce with diced green peppers, thinly sliced onions, and chopped olives, with a side of spaghetti and marinara sauce. It was more food than we could finish so we took away leftovers for lunch tomorrow. Was sad to pass on the desert menu- lots of great options to choose from. Our server, Fawn was very polite, super attentive, and very cheerful. We came on a Friday night after the dinner rush and had a very quiet and relaxing dinner. Highly recommend for a far better than average casual dining experience.

They were cooked to perfection and had a great sweet sauce. I enjoyed the salad too. They also brought out wings, mini burgers, mini fried chicken sandwiches, and tuna. Some were overcooked, but the flavor was nice. The seating was a bit awkward for a group our size in the private room, but we made it work. It was nice how casual it was.

The lady that took my order was soooo sweet and of course knowledgeable of the menu. I didn't feel rushed, just relaxed. Steak tacos were delicious (see pic). Menu said they had steak, cheesy scrambled eggs, tomato salsa, breakfast potatoes and cilantro. I didn't see or taste any potatoes, but the tacos were still delicious! I'd only recommend draining the salsa through a sieve because of the excess juice affecting the integrity of the tortilla. My husband's frittata was awful. The eggs were dry; he compared them to "eggs at the bottom of the warming tray at a cheap breakfast buffet." The chef also served a side salad alongside. My husband asked about subbing potatoes and Ms. Lashone made it happen. She was the star of our brunch: drinks were delicious, the conversational quips were quick and funny. She was attentive without being intrusive and made sure we felt welcomed and taken care of. 5 stars for her and my food; 1 for the frittata. I don't want to average it and tank the rating.
