This place is a MUST-visit. The servers are great and the atmosphere is top-notch. We started off with some great drinks only to be one-upped by the delicious garlic butter with the starting bread. I'd HIGHLY recommend the wagyu sliders and will have to be re-ordering them every time I come back. Fair warning, the Caesar salad is a bit anchovy-y for my taste but I can see how others would enjoy it. Wonderful restaurant and pretty great experience. My husband took us for a belated Valentine's Day. He could only get a 7pm appointment but we thought we'd go a bit early and get a couple drinks. However, when we showed up, the host appeared quite agitated that we were early and said there was no room to wait and seats at the upstairs bar to partake in a couple of drinks. There was a bar downstairs they advertise as a Speakeasy but at first, they were not going to let us go down b/c they said there was no room. Yet, we saw another couple show up early and they went down. So, we helped ourselves down and I am glad we did. The bartender downstairs was fabulous! She was very professional and personable and she fixed some mean drinks! Much better than the ones we got upstairs with our dinner. I would absolutely go back even just for drinks in the Speakeasy. There is in fact not a lot of room, but enough for about 8-10 people at the bar. And then there were some tables as well. It is a very quaint place which is why they say reservations recommended. And the building looks like an old general store. Inside there were about 10-12 tables upstairs. It was really neat. Ambiance inside was rustic and cozy. The service was okay. The food was excellent! I had the mushroom soup which was heavenly- one of the best I've had. My husband got the lobster bisque. It was not sherry forward enough for me, but it was decent. We then had the waygu beef flank appetizer. It was good, but I didn't read it close enough- it said chèvre; that's goat cheese; I'm not a fan at all of goat cheese. But, I did have a few bites and aside from the chèvre, it was good. For the main course, we both had the surf and turf and it was fabulous! Beautiful presentation. It didn't look like much, but it felt like we just ate enough for three each. For dessert I had a peanut butter pie - it wasn't great, but it wasn't bad. But, I wouldn't order it again. My husband and I truly enjoyed our experience at The Lion's Den 1837 - our waitress Rebekah was incredibly kind and attentive. She even took a Polaroid photo of us for our scrapbook! Food was wonderful. The burrata with olive basil tapenade was light and airy. The bread was perfectly done and warm when it came to the table. I ordered the scallop and shrimp risotto, which was excellent! Large size shrimp and the scallops were perfectly cooked. Not only was the food delicious, the experience was incredible and gave an authentic 1800's vibe, from the dark wood stain walls and original flooring to the soft jazz played in the background. As an unexpected added touch, the waitress wrote a congratulations card signed by staff and two chocolate truffles to take home. 10/10 experience and a lovely find in Mineral. read more

We decided to try this place for our last night in town for a family lake visit. What a lovely meal. This is a warm, friendly environment with well-executed food and excellent service. It is elevated cooking without pretension. The scallops Rockefeller were tender and rich (and our server, Gabby, wisely suggested some bread to mop up the sauce). The wine list was well-curated and my Boulevardier was nicely balanced. All our steaks (Wagyu flank, NY strip Leon, two filets mignon) were prepared as ordered and finished nicely with an array of compound butters, au jus, and sauces. The sides were excellent: perfectly cooked broccolini and asparagus alongside mashed potatoes that our older daughter - a veteran of renowned steakhouses - declared the best she'd ever had. They accommodated our autistic younger daughter's needs (no sauces, subbed butter noodles as a side, made her fresh lemonade). As a side note, I suspect that the butter noodles were cooked to just shy of al dente and then poached in butter to finish, as they had a flavor and texture pleasantly reminiscent of mac and cheese. For dessert, the kids enjoyed Nutella cake and Black Forest cake while mom sipped some wine and I enjoyed a generous pour of Buffalo Trace. The service was friendly, professional, and unfussy. Gabby's instincts for when to check on us were preternaturally accurate and always welcome. It was the most expensive meal we ate this week, but the quality is head and shoulders above the other lake offerings. Well worth a visit, and I hope this place gets the recognition it deserves. The Lions Den is truly and surprise from start to finish! When you first walk in, there is dark wood, antiques and crystal chandeliers, giving off an old elegant feel. One arriving through the original front doors of the building, we were greeted by a warm and inviting host that took us to our table that is set with fresh pressed linens and beautiful glassware. Once the server arrived, we were greeted and asked if we have been here before. When we let them know it was or first time here, they gave us a little history on the building and the menu has a full history listed on the back. The building exudes historical charm and is a registered historical building dating back to 1837. Upon ordering our food, we received bread with three house made compound butters. I took one of my adult children initially, and she raved about it so much that this last visit was with my older son and my wife. What a treat it was, from beginning to end. My son was not used to the level of service you will receive from TLD1837 staff, but it is second to none. We did not have reservations but were seated immediately because it wasn't crowded at all. Waitstaff was attentive, knowledgeable, and pleasant. We chose the Lions feast for two (from the specials menu) which gave you a choice of starter, soup or salad, entree, and shared dessert. Initial bread and butter flight was tasty and complimentary. All courses were staggered and ample time was allotted before the next arrived. The food was beautifully presented and very tasty. As Louisa County residents, we were excited to have an upscale option without having to drive to Richmond or Charlottesville. The meal was very mixed. Enough good that we will likely give it one more try, but by no means stellar. Made an early dinner reservation for four of us, and the place was almost empty when we were seated. Nice ambiance. Drinks were brought out promptly. They brought out bread and 3 house made butters. The bread was nothing special (I doubt house-made) and the butters were good. The mixed greens and house dressing (green goddess) were fine but VERY overdressed - I will ask for dressing on the side next time. One in our party had the lobster bisque. He commented that it was very heavy on the lemon but ok. My husband and I split a smoked salmon appetizer and it was tasty but most of the salmon was from the very tail end of the fillet , so was quite chewy, with quite a bit of connective tissue. One person in our party ordered duck breast, and it was supposed to be medium. It was very rare/bloody (the waiter later told her it was initially medium) and she sent it back to cook a little more, and it was returned more to her liking. They also brought her a complimentary glass of wine. Her husband's main dish order was correct, and he was happy with it. My husband and I both ordered the American Wagyu flank steak, his rare, mine medium rare. They brought him a medium-rare filet, and my steak (an actual flank) was very rare (not a big deal, I like prefer medium-rare but rare is OK, and not worth sending it back and getting it too done). I had asked for my steak with the garlic-herb butter rather than the standard horseradish sauce, and my husband wanted the horseradish, which is how we know who's was who's, yet the cooks on the steaks were reversed. When it was pointed out that they brought him the wrong steak, they initially took it back, then a manager returned and offered him the filet at the same price as the flank steak. He actually preferred the flank but did not want to wait for them to fire a new order, so he agreed. He said it was an excellent filet, just not what he wanted, and was medium rare, not the rare he ordered. My flank steak was well seasoned and tasty. I would make the suggestion that flank is a steak that should be sliced prior to presentation. It is a cut that should be sliced across the grain in order to keep it from being really chewy, and between the sauce on top and the dim lighting, it was hard to figure out which way to slice the meat. The steak knife provided was not all that sharp, and when combined with the very rare steak, it was difficult to cut. The side dishes were good. There was a smashed potato dish that was well seasoned and appropriately cooked, and asparagus and baby carrots - both simple but well-executed and fresh. We ordered two desserts. One was a chocolate lava cake which was pretty much what you expect - a good chocolate lava cake. I ordered the apple rosemary bread pudding. The only detectable rosemary was the garnish, and there was no detectable apple. The bread pudding was, for lack of a better term, hard. There was plenty of custard mixture but it didn't really soften up the bread sufficiently, so it was very difficult to break up with the spoon provided. What should have been soft and luxurious was... chewy. The flavor was nice, but not what I expected (again, no detectable apple or rosemary). Service was good (other than putting in the wrong steak order, which the server admitted to), attentive without being intrusive. read more

Celebrated our anniversary at The Lion's Den this evening, driving out from near downtown Richmond. To say it was worth the trip would be a HUGE understatement!! From the handwritten anniversary card to Breanna's (and the rest of the team's) attentive and helpful service to the absolutely pitch-perfect decor and atmosphere, we had a fantastic experience. And that's not even mentioning the food! The lobster bisque was extraordinary, my pork chop and her surf and turf were perfectly prepared and delicious, and the desserts were outstanding. Went here to celebrate my 24th birthday here with my dad since he lives in Lake Anna and this is by far my new favorite LKA restaurant. Yes the prices are very high, but you get exactly what you pay for with high-end quality food that tastes unbelievably good and amazing top-tier service. Throughout our meal, we had a nice long conversation with the general manager Misty, who is very sweet by the way and deeply cares about her customers and waitress Zoey was also absolutely phenomenal as well and even though I made a last-minute phone reservation, Zoey was still able to fully organize our table by giving me a birthday card and everything and Zoe also recommended some really good dishes like the pimento cheese dip which is by far the best pimento cheese I've ever had and I'm a huge fan of their Burrata Caprese which was full of mouthwatering flavor. Of course the highlight was my Wagyu NY strip steak in which I'm not really a fan of steak but when it comes to high-end high-quality meets like Wagyu beef then it completely changes everything about steak, especially when it comes with homemade red wine as jus and horseradish sauce. And then when they brought up my dessert, they sang a really nice happy birthday song to me and I was treated very well. I was not expecting this dinner to be the highlight of my 24th birthday, but it's sure absolutely was with how amazing the food and service was. Great place for higher end dining out in the country. The surrounding area really doesn't have a lot of restaurants, so to find fine dining and a fun speakeasy out here is just amazing. Great back story about the place, great atmosphere inside as well. Food and staff were both great. Portions are smaller, but so delicious. The pasta is amazing, probably the best pasta I've had anywhere, and the steaks are cooked perfect. Only reason for 4 stars is the portion sizes on some dishes. The portobello mushroom app was just one single mushroom cap, our son ate it quickly. For the price it would be great to see slightly larger portions. read more

Took my wife to the Lion's Den to celebrate her birthday, she turned 25 again . Our son, her and I had a wonderful experience! Really cool ambiance tied with some pretty neat history. There was a hand written card pre-placed at our table, which was a very lovely touch she greatly appreciated. Food was excellent, especially the filet and pumpkin crème brûlée. Recently my wife and I had dinner at the Lion's Den 1837 and enjoyed the 4 course special. I had the salad with mixed greens with a homemade vinaigrette and she had the lobster bisque, which was good but had to much pepper. I had the bone in Pork Chop with Grits and Spinach and it was all excellent. The pork was cooked to perfection and the 2 sides were equally tasty. My wife had the Salmon with Wild rice pilaf and Fresh green beans. According to her, the Salmon was excellent and cooked just right. The green beans were a little too crisp and bit chewy and the wild rice pilaf was too salty for her taste. We each had a dessert, Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie and the Bread pudding. These were delicious and some came home in boxes. read more

We ate early when restaurant was nearly empty, but the server sat us close to another couple. Without the white noise of a crowd, their conversation was distracting and we asked for a different table. The pork chop was also flavorful, well seasoned, and had a great sauce, but it was a bit dry. The side dishes (spinach, fingerling potatoes, and green beans) were nothing special. The lava cake we shared was good but pretty common. In all, Lion's Den needs to improve to justify its up-scale aspirations (and prices). It's better than several restaurants near Lake Anna and we would welcome a Lion's Den that truly reaches its aspirations. read more

I'd like to start this review with a huge positive; the food tasted very good. Second, I have zero problem paying high dollar amounts for good food, if it's satisfying. My wife and I visited the restaurant for Valentine's Day this year. The restaurant is cozy with low lighting. A very nice atmosphere. The service was spot on. Now, the negative; we dropped almost $400 on the meal, which included a couple adult drinks. I ordered the surf & turf. The menu mentions blackened shrimp and some type of steak medallions. It presented very well, but looked as if it should be on the kids menu. There were 3 small shrimp and 1 tiny medallion. For the money, the portions could have been a little better. I politely asked the server about the misleading medallions (plural) on the menu and she asked and the chef (or whoever) said its based on weight. That's fine, just make sure the menu is correct. Say "3 shrimp and a half ounce steak medallion", this way anyone with an appetite greater than a 7 year olds can skip over it. I do recommend the restaurant for the taste, history, and ambiance. read more

I had the pleasure of dining at the lovely and cozy Lion's Den 1837 restaurant on Sunday evening, and it was a completely exceptional experience from start to finish! I was greeted immediately upon entering and seated by the charming hostess Alyssa. While I was being seated the manager Misty came over and greeted me and made me feel very welcome. My server for the evening was Trinity, and she was wonderful, making sure I had everything I needed throughout the evening. My choice from the menu was the prime rib special, and it was indeed special! The cut of meat was superior to most I've had in the past--and since prime rib is one of my go-tos that is phenomenal! The meat was tender, well seasoned, very flavorful and prepared with obvious care and attention to detail. The sides were equally well prepared and paired nicely with the prime rib. I truly enjoyed every morsel! And a sweet addition was the best old fashioned I've ever had, which Trinity made to my request with just the right amount of sweetness! Overall a totally awesome experience which I will repeat as soon as possible! Thanks to the entire staff for treating me so warmly and with such attentive kindness! We had heard such great things but our experience wasn't quite what we expected. We went here for our anniversary and did the speakeasy first. No complaints there. When we went up to the restaurant, however, our experience wasn't as great. The appetizers came out lukewarm and we waited over an hour for our entrees. The positives...the food was tasty and the staff were friendly. It was our anniversary and there was a handwritten note and a beautiful flower waiting for us at our table. Ambiance was great. Servers were great. My ginger ale was 90% small ice cubes. Why so much ice? If I had wanted ice water I would have requested it. (The water glasses had zero ice. Go figure.). Nothing more distracting than a watered down drink. Bread and 3 types of butter were great. The $10 Garden salad should've been fed to the pigs. I have seen the main green used as a garnish before, but never as the main green. The 3 Tommy-toe tomatoes were overly ripe (actually on the verge of being rotten). The only saving grace for the salad was the basalmic vinaigrette dressing, which was pretty standard fare. My main course was the 6 ounce fillet mignon. I had dreams of a succulent, melt in your mouth piece of meat. Boy was I sadly disappointed. When presented I thought they had made a mistake and given me a small ribeye (minus the marbling and fat around the edges). The steak was cooked to perfection, seasoned to perfection, but was tough and grizzly like a sirloin. Very disappointed I was. Desert was fabulous. All in all,...I won't be back. Sorry. read more

Really weak service here. Our waitress couldn't open our bottle of wine, she had to take it back to her manager to open it. She swore she'd done this before, didn't look like it. Our food eventually arrived and it was wrong. The table beside us had the same problem. It was finally served 90 minutes after we first arrived. That's a long time, we almost got up and left. And of course my steak was way undercooked and barely warm. I ordered It medium, it was gooey raw in the center. I ate it anyway, I was hungry. Pretty stringy. The flavor was really good though. This was the second time my wife and I have eaten at the Lions Den. First experience was perfect. Great food and great service. A 5 star experience. I wish I could say the same about our second experience. Evening started out with a warm welcome and seating. We had 2 waitresses. One was training. Service started out excellent. Food as always was on point. Things went south after the entrees were served. Our waitresses literally disappeared. We sat for 20min waiting to order desert. When the waitress returned she said she was sorry but she had a large table downstairs. I asked for a drink refill and we ordered desert. For the next 20 min we sat. No drink, no desert. When the waitress finally returned she said she would get my drink and desert would be out shortly. The drink and dessert were then plopped on the table. Shortly after the bill was plopped on the table with no response from the waitress. We paid the bill and left rather than wait for her to return. Very disappointing that we were abandoned for a larger group. Not what I expected from a restaurant of this caliber. read more

We went for the first time since they opened. The building and inside are very nicely updated and decorated. We went on Wednesday for the $35 special menu. 4 courses, limited choice, but as far as we could tell they were all dishes from the main menu. The bread loaf was freshly baked and came out hot, with a variety of butter. The appetizer was a choice of side salad or soup of the day, (which we all got; homemade tomato bisque soup). Delicious! My wife got Waygu steak, daughter got bourbon bacon burger, and I got a pork chop. All top notch and delicious! Side orders come too. Dessert was a lemon bar and a raspberry bar. Also excellent. Service was very attentive and excellent. The manager stopped over to see how everything was. All in all a great experience, and getting the special is a great way to try it out. Next time I'll probably up my order with the regular menu; I saw some nice dry rubbed steaks on there! I highly recommend it. read more
