This review is late, but worth reviewing still. We flew from California and had a corporate party of 60. They provided 2 servers for the group of 60. Absolutely overwhelming the 2 individuals, who over-served some and underserved others. They missed one of the appetizers we had arranged to serve. The bread was good, my steak was undercooked but I'm okay with rare so I ate it. Stinks when you spend months planning a dinner only to be surprised by how chaotic 2 servers with a 60 person party can be! The golf course was a nice background, but other than that it was very underwhelming for what a nice venue it was. Update: I've attached our statement for the payment for the dinner as additional insurance, its odd the restaurant would respond saying they did not have steak as an option when their tiered group menu did have "Pesce Del Giorno Con Filetto Alla Griglia" which was pretty good actually, but again, horrible service and now the restaurant is questioning a legitimate review. Was able to make a last minute reservation on a Saturday night shortly before closing. Steve B. was our server and was very helpful and patient going over the menu with us as we were indecisive. We split the pane fresco which was delicious. I ordered the Lumache Al pesto genovese. Ordered the full portion so I'd have leftovers. It was fabulous fresh and the next day! My friend ordered the clam and sausage linguine which she thoroughly enjoyed. For dessert I had the Budino Al Carmello. If you like butterscotch and caramel, you will love this! Have gone to this place before and liked it but their fixed menu (which was a surprise when we arrived) lead to the worst dining experience in 25 years of coming to Maui. We spent $850 for portions and ingredients that were for small children and could have been purchased at the grocery for $50. It was a total scam. We dine at fine restaurants all the time and this experience was embarrassing (and slow). Sadly we were mortified for the guests we brought with us. We will never go back. Felt and tasted very store bought. The perfectly round, no imperfections, gooey pizza dough gave it away. Ew. My primary concern, though, we're prices. $16-18 per cocktail. Almost paid $21 for their signature Lattuga Cappuccina starter, which is like 4 random salad ingredients NOT mixed together. Luckily they forgot about it and offered it to me on the house. First we have been going to Taverna each year we come back to Maui. Service is good and atmosphere is great. Unfortunately this year menu changed a bit so pasta dishes all have a cream base. Also the chicken is sitting in a heavy cream based sauce that is so ridiculous. We like this restaurant but unfortunately it's so heavy based in cream they seem to be losing their way and we won't be returning anytime soon. This hurts me to do this because Taverna is a staple when our family comes to Kapalua. The food is and always will be top notch. But Alex S is the worst server and worst thing to happen Taverna since we have come here for years. Alex was no where to be found for our party of 6. At one point I walked up to the bar and politely asked the bartender if I could grab our drinks since they had been sitting for up there for 15 minutes while Alex was either smoking and joking with the other staff or doing God know what. He skipped us many times and was slow on everything. It wasn't that busy. I even saw someone who appeared to be a General Manager scolding him for something else he had done while we were there. Obviously there is a problem with him. To top it all off since we were a party of 6 he added a 22% tip for himself since we were a "big party". We don't know if that is standard at Taverna or not, but obviously since he knew his tip was already added in, I am sure that is why we were given sub standard service throughout the night. Wow!! Love the Sunday brunch menu. Chicken and waffles served with real maple syrup and local honey. The chicken is absolutely delicious paired with homemade waffles perfectly done. Try the 'smooth operator ' drink for a refreshing strawberry purée alcoholic drink to start your meal in addition to local maui coffee served. Live music, performed by a local guitarist during brunch hours creates a lovely atmosphere while sitting outside watching people on the Bay course driving range. Be sure to ask the guitarist to play " Somewhere over the rainbow" a classic Hawaiian favorite. Taverna brunch is a rare combination of great food, beautiful scenery and lovely music. I rarely leave reviews... I like to tip 25% even when the service and food is so so. But, you should listen to the previous 4 reviews in the last 30 days. When we made a reservation, they asked if there was a special occasion - we said yes! It's our honeymoon. They did nothing special (which is fine) but don't ask about special occasions then. We tried to cancel the reservation earlier in the day, but they informed us it would be a $50 fee, so we kept it. We got here at 6:50 (10 mins early), and they didn't seat us until 7:15. Something about needing people to get up but there were 10 empty tables and they sat 6 other tables before us (who didn't check in until after us). The server only asked us for orders and we barely saw him. The food was bland. There were no pine nuts In the pasta. The branzino was blah. They thought we were locals (we're not), but it must indicate that they don't treat locals very well? Positive note: the support staff is wonderful. We gave him more money than our server, cause we were unsure what our server even did. Better luck finding a cute food truck for a nice dinner!!! read more

We've been a regulars at Taverna for years. We stopped going for dinner recently because the prices have been going up and up. Today we went for happy hour and were surprised with yet another price increase. They've changed the pizzas for "flatbread" which are half the size and twice the dough. They also downgraded Prosciutto for ham on their "Conivoire" Our "Happy Hour" bartender was anything but happy to boot. Too many misses. Management has no idea how to manage reservations. Only reservation for the next night was 8:30pm and then the next reservation was 4 days later. Fine, 8:30pm reservation it is. Not only do we realize when we get there that we could have showed up at any time during the night (place is empty and has been empty), but the waiter is immediately looking at his watch like we are the problem. This place effectively closes at 9pm despite the fact that they offer 8:30 reservations and the website says 10. We parked valet because it was pouring and paid the guy with tip up front. Guess what, valet 'closes' before the restaurant so he interrupts our dinner to give us back our keys. And he forgot we paid so asked for payment again. Wonderful. They cleared our appetizer plates and never brought new utensils. Out of lasagna. Bathroom is outside of the restaurant. Brought the bread with the entrees like pilgrims. Food was mediocre. Olives tasted like mouthwash. Blamé desert was weak. Sorry Jason, this place is a miss. Go to L'artusi instead. read more

Our first visit to Maui and we decided to check out Taverna based on the recommendation of the condo owner where we were staying. This is despite meeting a local who said "it's okay. Not my favorite." The atmosphere is nice. Our food tasted fine. We went hoping to try the lasagna (signature dish) but they were out. Also out of all chicken. My wife and daughter had the duck pasta. I had the carnivore pizza. We had the shrimp and calamari for an appetizer. The shrimp was cooked perfectly, but the calamari was tough. The duck pasta was tasty but the carnivore pizza may as well have been a cheese pizza. Our server was mediocre. He seemed disappointed we didn't order cocktails. My pizza came out after my wife and daughter finished their meal. To their credit, the manager did give us another appetizer and took my pizza off our bill. I appreciated this. Dinner at Taverna wowed us. DH had the lasagna and said it was the beat he's had in years. They make it in a traditional style using both bolognese and bechamel. It's not a deep dish type, but the serving is generous. I had the short ribs, which came with parsnip purée and fried Brussels sprouts. This was unbelievable. No knife required for this ultra tender meat! DD has the kids Margherita pizza, which she liked. We also had a side of roasted fingerling potatoes and broccolini. Both were great. Our waiter was super nice and service was excellent. I also thought the location of the restaurant was interesting-located in the same building as a golf clubhouse, with views of the course. Oh, Taverna.. I want to say not 3 stars, not quite 4 stars either, but a little closer to 4 stars so I'll round up! I was looking for a place to eat dinner for a long overdue birthday celebration and wanted to check out somewhere new before we headed to the Montage. Taverna was close and is a newish restaurant located in Kapalua, near the Ritz Carlton Resort. So, we made a reservation just in case and got there a little before they opened. The reservation was really unnecessary since it was pretty empty, but better safe than sorry! Right when we walked in I was impressed with the interior design / decor which has that industrial vibe, but rustic at the same time. We were seated by the doors which had a view of the patio and the golf course below. There was a nice breeze flowing through and it's the perfect spot to sit on a hot day. We ordered the Fritto Misto (Crusted Friend Shrimp & Calamari), Caprese, Linguine con Vongole (w/ Manila Clams & Italian Sausage), & Filetto di Branzino. The Fritto Misto was seasoned very well and was really delicious. Our entrees however were heavily under seasoned. They both tasted light, fresh, and were cooked perfectly but really needed salt or some type of seasoning since it was really bland. We just decided that it was probably in my husband's best interest to eat something bland (due to health) anyway so we ate it as is. The service also left something to be desired. I felt like the the table next to us was given more attention. I'm pretty sure I knew our waiters whole life story with how long his conversation went with the table next to ours while my husband and I were waiting around just to ask for our check. When our waiter left to get our check, my husband managed to go to the bathroom, come back, & I was still waiting for our check. I don't normally notice these things, but the restaurant was not that busy and we were in a rush, so time was definitely of essence. We had to skip dessert which is actually what I wanted to try. So, we'll definitely have to stop by again for that and for a drink because the bar is absolutely beautiful. read more

Despite being surrounded by the Hawaiian culture, we needed to get our Italian fix while on Maui for our honeymoon and we were SO glad we chose Taverna. This Italian food blew us out of the water. So much so, that I compared my carbonara to the first and only carbonara that I had while studying abroad in Italy. Our server was attentive and so kind, she definitely had a few tough tables that night, so we were happy to be patient and understanding for her. Really pains me to write a review like this. The restaurant itself is beautiful. Gorgeous views, awesome looking dining room, staff was kind and attentive. But the food..... this is where it was bad. Appetizers: fresh baked bread, olive oil and salt The bread was "meh" at best. One piece and I was like "yeah I'm good" when usually with good bread, I'd order more. I was hoping for a soft inner and a crunchy exterior. There was enough olive oil on the plate for 2 slices of bread, not for a whole loaf. This was $10 and mediocre at best. caprese salad: not quite ripe slice of tomato with a teeny tiny piece of mozzarella on top. 3 pieces for a table of four people. $22. I can buy a good tomato and buffalo mozzarella at Safeway and have a better caprese salad than this. shrimp and calamari fritti: this one was actually not terrible, just over salted Entrees: Lasagna - so overcooked you couldn't tell there was pasta in it. Gnocchi - the winner of the three entrees Carbonara - overcooked spaghetti noodles with more of an alfredo sauce and very fatty pieces of ham. EXTREME let down for a $250 dinner. read more

I stopped by for a beer and a cocktail with my wife. I was told by the very rude bartender that they didn't have a particular brand of beer - even though it is clearly on the menu. He was very abrupt, bordering on mean, and a real spoiler for what should have been a relaxing hour. There is more to the bad behavior but I've said enough. I was there on October 13 around 4pm. Came in for a outstanding dinner the other night. We were greeted right away by the owner when we walked in the door! I made a reservation for 6:30, it wasn't to busy when we got there, but I did notice a line started to form around 7. I loved the atmosphere of this place. The staff was super friendly and accommodating. It's a large beautiful restaurant, but they made us feel like we were right at home. I didn't want to leave! We ordered the house baked bread with Hawaiian sea salt and olive oil to start. That's a must! For entrees I got there pasta special of the night. Vegan Pasta special: linguine pasta, grilled egg plant, zucchini, crimini mushrooms tossed in San Marzano marinara sauce, and mico greens. All ingredients were fresh and local to the island and it sure tasted that way! I wouldn't change a thing! My boyfriend got the small order of the house made pasta, lobster, garlic, Italian parsley, tomato cream sauce. Super yummy! We loved the unique scratch made noodles, they melt in your mouth and the small portion was plenty. If you are in the arena or not, come check this place out. We will for sure be back! read more

Taverna is an excellent new Italian restaurant in Kapalua, on the west side of Maui, near the Ritz Carlton hotel. First of all, you can take the shuttle there so that's super convenient. But secondly, and more importantly, the service was incredible!! 6 of us visited Taverna and enjoyed the food, wine & the atmosphere! It's not as expensive as the other fine dining restaurants in this part of Maui. It's only open for dinner. The menu includes many choices of salads, soups, appetizers, fish, meat, vegetarian, pastas, pizza and even burgers. Everything I have eaten here has been delicious. The ambiance is great and the setting is beautiful. Keep in mind for those ordering pasta- they make their own pasta so it will be served al dente- which is perfect, but if you like yours a little more done than tell your server at time you order and save them from having to recook your dish. I can't say enough about the service though, they accommodated multiple checks without showing any frustration as well as just being very sweet throughout the entire service. Would definitely recommend this restaurant to everyone!! PS: They've Wine Wednesdays and offer a long list of half off wine bottles. read more
