When I eat out, I normally don't choose Italian restaurants. Pasta is easy to make and very overpriced. Someone chose this restaurant and I tagged along. We came on a Friday afternoon. There were like 2 other groups seated. Great for us so food and drinks should come out faster. I ordered gnocchi, since it's an item that I think requires too much effort. It came out hot, the sauce and cheese were so creamy. It wad good. The accompany guest got fish sandwich. It was basic. Fries were hot and crispy. I also got tiramisu for dessert. Classic Italian, it was good. Not to sweet, moist. Perfect way to end the meal. As stated before, it is more on the expensive end. If I had to pay, I wouldn't have chosen here. read more

This area of Kapalua was really interesting. Pine trees and the buildings look like what you would find in the Sierras. In the dark, when we dined at Taverna, I had to keep reminding myself I was not in Whistler, where the place we stay has a similar look. We arrived about an hour prior to closing, and were seated in the outdoor area near the pizza oven. We ordered: - caesar salad - meatballs - brussells - marguerita pizza with prosciutto The salad was tasty, but not as good as another one we had in a place in Wailea (that I posted about previously). Unfortunately though, it kind of filled me up so that I didn't have a lot of room for the other items, which were kind of just so-so. The meatballs had bacon in them, which was interesting. They were nice and saucy and were good with the grilled bread they were served with. The portion size was large with 4 meatballs. The brussells were nicely flavored, however, they were too hard. I like to be able to easily stick a fork into them or cut them. I don't want them mushy either but there is a place in between hard and mushy. I kind of picked off the crispy leaves and left the rest. I did not try the pizza but their version of marguerita pizza was diced tomatoes and not tomato slices like most places. Hubby said the prosciutto was good. Note that if you make a reservation online, they want a credit card to hold it and if you cancel with less than 24 hours, they will charge you. I cannot say enough good things about Taverna! I was seated and greeted immediately. It was just me and I had a reservation just in case, but I easily could have walked in or sat at the bar. It was a Wednesday night and they were about half full. I had an espresso Martini (weak), the ahi Crudo (?) and the lasagne. I've been here before and I was there for the lasagne....they took it off the menu but thankfully it was a special that night! Excellent service!! Excellent food!! Service was friendly and helpful and setting and ambience is of course fantastic as you would expect for Kapalua, hard to screw that up as you are literally in a paradisaic setting! But the design and decor and patio, etc. are all very comfortable and nice. Its a short walk from the Ritz Carlton, and the prices are reasonable given the location, will cost about half what it costs to eat on-sight at the Ritz. read more

A rarely if ever do reviews but felt compelled after our experience this past week. Huge shout out to the staff (Sierra, Alex, Shawn (waiter) and Shaun "Chewy" for the incredible hospitality and service. We stayed at a nearby resort and being creatures of habit, once we find something we like we tend to just keep going back. Came in three different times, one for a formal dinner and two times for drinks at the bar and carry out. Each time we felt at home. Great food, great atmosphere and even better people. Very disappointed as this used to be a favorite restaurant. We were there with a party of 5. We were seated right away, but they tried to put us at a table sized for 4 people. This was frustrating as we had a reservation for 5. They found us another table and we had high expectations. Sadly, things did not get any better. The server was missing in action for large periods of time. When our food arrived we immediately noticed that the lasagna was not the same as it had been in the past. If you have been going to Taverna for long, you know that their lasagna was legendary. The lasagna was served in a skillet and was thin, crispy, and unbelievably good. The new lasagna was very different and similar to Stouffer's or Olive Garden. Even worse, 2 of the 3 lasagnas had to be returned as they were cold. Another person ordered the meatballs (also lukewarm and overly salted) and truffle fries (small bowl of tasteless, cold fries). The most frustrating part of the evening was that the server didn't even care to apologize for the inconvenience of having to wait for the food to be heated. She also didn't realize that much of the food was left uneaten. A simple acknowledgement, apology by the server, or recognition of management would have prevented us from leaving so disgruntled and leading to this review. We enjoyed Sunday Brunch on the patio and it was wonderful combo of views, fabulous food and great service. There was a local musician playing his guitar and it was the perfect balance of being able to hear it but not overwhelmed by it. We had the lobster benedict, custard French toast and braised short ribs. The lobster was well portioned and the egg cooked to perfection. The short ribs were tender and flavorful. The custard French toast was tasty, but if you are not thrilled with a soggier bread - this is not for you. I had the Go Tell Brian cocktail and it was so very good - I should have had a second! One of my new favorites! Was looking for restaurants to eat dinner tonight and this popped up in Yelp so gave it a shot. SO GLAD WE DID! We walked in and immediately I liked the vibe of the place. It was inviting and open, yet still comfortable with plenty of tables. Best of all our server was top-of-the-line! If you go, definitely ask to sit in Alejandro's section!! He was so knowledgeable about the menu and helpful with tips and recommendations. Also, the timing of the meal and service was exceptional. The kind where they are filling up your water before you even realized it got low. Next up is the food. Everything that came out was so mouthwatering amazing it was hard not to devour everything. I wanted to order one of each item off the menu. It all sounded so good, but we order the bread, caprice, salad, beet salad, fish of the day and bolognese. Wow! 10 stars for everything! We just dined at Taverna and it was by far our favorite meal on the island. I ordered the scallops/shrimp special, and it was amazing. My husband ordered the macadamia nut crusted mahi mahi and he loved it. We both shared the Caesar salad and it was excellent. Crème Brulee was great too. Well, I wish I could write a decent review for this place as the menu looked interesting. In short, pretentious and over priced. I expected it to be an upscale place, it comes off as an insider vs. everyone else place. Service was mediocre, food was "fine" but way, way overpriced for what it was. Do not recommend. Better food and service in many other places. Our server was inattentive. We sat for over 30 minutes with empty water glasses and not until someone brought our appetizer did she notice we had no water. The "locally brewed root beer from Maui Brewing Company" turned out to be a can of A&W root beer. We know because they actually brought the can to the table! We were told the fish of the day (Ahi) was $46, and when the bill came it was actually $56. Whatever, don't tell us one price and then ring it up for 50% more. Ahi was very tasty, on a bed of lentils with 3 pieces of asparagus. Pasta special of braised pork ribs was one dimensional and literally only pasta and rib meat. Pizza was bland, claimed to have prosciutto on it but we only found 2 small pieces. Pesto pasta was fine, but again, literally just pesto and noodles. Sides of sprouts and broccolini were fine but nothing special. Wine list was decent. Service was terrible. We sat next to the open air patio and our slow waiter guaranteed we were treated to the screams and shenanigans of a mob of under 10 yr old running on the golf course. Taverna has excellent atmosphere and superior Italian pastas. Surprisingly it has a 3.5 star review here. It should be a solid 4-5 stars. Pastas were far better than your typical Italian place in CA and better than some we had in Italy itself. Truffle Gnocchi was stellar. New Zealand Sea bass with crispy potatoes was divine. The meatball appetizer was really good too. Crowd is older locals in the Kapalua area it seems on a Tues night. My Mai Tai was not Merrimen's good but still good. Hard to compete with Lillikoi foam. First, I came to this particular Italian restaurant based on reviews that mentioned great gluten-free options. NOT TRUE. But let's start from the beginning. Annoyance began with the receptionist whose English was either so bad that she couldn't understand my request that my kids receive adult menus or was too dim-witted. I suspect it was a language barrier because we experienced the same issue with the girl who provided us waters when my daughter mistakenly thought she was our server and asked if they had strawberry lemonade. Definite language barrier issue. But the real moronic behavior occurred when our waiter arrived and I asked about gluten free options. He proceeded to identify the non-bread items on the menu (such as the crudo) to tell us that there was no gluten in crudo. When we stopped him to explain that we understand what types of foods don't have gluten and were asking about bread and pasta options, he got snippy. Then explained that they do not have any gluten-free bread products, but they can make a penne pasta that is gluten-free. Not what I was expecting based on other reviews I had read so I want to let others know how limited their options are if someone is hoping for gluten-free pasta. Mind you, I had also put in the notes of our Open Table reservation that we were interested in gluten-free options. Apparently no one reads the reservation notes... As a result of all of this discussion (related to 1 person in our party who is trying to limit gluten), I guess they decided to never bring bread to our table cause I saw bread arrive at all of our surrounding tables that were sat after us. In addition to ordering a Mai Tai, we brought a bottle of Far Niente Cab. We asked to have it opened. Had to ask twice in order to get the waiter to open it. After that first pour from the waiter, no one ever came back to pour our wine for us. We started with 2 appetizers to share. Then we ordered 2 entrees to share. We like to take our time at dinner. The plan was to then order another couple items. But when they brought out the 2 entrees, they spilled my husband's glass of wine (that I had just filled up), all over the table. Multiple plates were covered and the lasagna dish also had a couple ounces of the wine poured into it. But no rush to clean and clear items. No suggestion of how to compensate for the full glass of our expensive wine that you just spilled. Then, as the cleaning is happening, the waiter comes over and says he doesn't know what happened and asks if one of our kids spilled the wine. ‍ The lasagna (flooded with wine) is still sitting on the table with the suggestion that we should enjoy it. The waiter asks us if we want a new lasagna, which should have been an unnecessary question. Clearly the kitchen has not instilled any sense of propriety into the front of the house as to how the food should be eaten. Drenched in wine...whatever. They did bring a new lasagna dish eventually and didn't charge us for it. They still charged us the $30 corkage and no offer for a free glass of wine to compensate for our spilled wine. We knew we had to get out of there and quickly ended our meal at that point. I obviously do not recommend this place. That said, outdoor seating does provide beautiful views of the golf course. And the food we ate was tasty. But this is hands down the worst service I've ever seen anywhere on this island during my 11 visits over the many years. read more

Came for happy hour. Our server at the bar was delightful blonde who is leaving for San Diego -- she will be missed. Drinks:Enjoyed the well gin and tonic as the gin was actually flavorful and delicious. Also had the German beer on tap which was outstanding. Food: shared the Frito misto and two slices of pizza margherita and salsiccia. First off the Frito misto was way overdone and I think it's been a long time since the owner or manager tasted this appetizer because it was awful - the calamari were so dry and chewy that I'm certain they were frozen or very old. I didn't say anything because I'm not one to make a scene but this is one of my go to appetizers and I would strongly suggest people avoid. The pizza slices looked beautiful with the presentation being very nice for a slice of pizza. The margherita was bland but it's margherita. The sausage however was amazing and I will be back to reorder this. Atmosphere: beautiful decor with open air to outside. Bar was very clean. Servers were attentive and the handcrafted cocktails looked amazing. Saw a lot of the lavender gin drink going out and it was gorgeous and clearly tasty because people were ordering another round. When we walked in the restaurant there were only 3 tables occupied and so many open but according to 3 hostesses all tables were taken.. we set at the bar for like an hour.
