I have to admit it takes getting used to eating here in Italy. The service is not what I am used to, but that doesn't mean it is bad. The waiter was very friendly and checked in sporadically. The Bruschetta appetizer was very good and the mozzarella was good. We also had Supli were different but also very tasty. I had the veal, pounded nice and thin and breaded just right. Fantastic spot. We had the chicken Marsala and a veal with lemon wine sauce. We didn't realize the main dishes didn't come without sides (lost translation) but the dishes were fantastic. With a side of noodles they would have been over the moon. Great table wine as well. Definitely would return and would recommend to anyone! read more

Conveniently located across the street from our hostel (The Yellow) without the screaming high schoolers frequenting the hostel bar (The Yellow Bar), Tavera Pretoriana made for a lovely dinner spot two separate nights for us while we were in Rome. (Honestly, just walking like 12 miles in a day will wear you down enough that proximity makes things more desirable.) There is a nice, smaller patio as well as a handful of tables inside. Wherever you dine, service is quick and friendly, and you will pay inside. (Pro tip - they accept credit cards.) Very tasty. read more

The food was fantastic and fast. Even though we had to show up around an hour till close, the (who I think was the owner) happily took us and the food came out extremely fast. The restaurant was around the block from our hotel and we arrived after along day of touring the city. We had six in our party and so they asked a couple to move to the end of a long table (several tables pulled together) outside. So we sat with one couple on each end of our table. A little awkward but it appeared to be the norm so we went with it. The menu has plenty to offer for everyone. Wine choices are about like you would have when going to an average pizza joint but all Italian. Complimentary bruschetta is brought out for everyone. We went here just because it was a local area. Even though Yelp has it at less than 4 stars we didn't care since we went by word of mouth. They served some of the best pasta I ever had. My experience at this restaurant was one of the greatest dining experiences I've ever had. It has been a month since I left Rome and still my mouth waters when I think of the delicious food here. I tried multiple dishes at this restaurant. Because I went in a matter of two days, not once or twice, but three times. This was hands down the best pizza I have ever had. The service was absolutely incredible. The wait staff here were friendly from the start... And welcomed me with open arms every time I returned. I regret not discovering this gem earlier on in my stay in Rome but this will be one of the main reasons I return. On my last night in Roma I was fortunate to share it with some of the new friends I made from this wonderful restaurant. This spot was our back-up plan when another place was closed--the last weeks of January are the very bottom of low season and some places close. The staff speaks excellent English, but they don't provide "American" service for tourists. They serve at the pace and in the style expected by the locals, who were plentiful the Sunday evening we dined here. Extremely professional servers, but they are not warm, smiling and friendly. Be gracious and you will get good service. The food had a nice homey quality about it. This is not fine dining or anything terribly creative. It is satisfying, traditional, and cooked very well. They bring the bread with the meal--use it to sop up all the nice sauces. If you are a group, order the liter of house wine. We had the house red, which is delicious, and they serve it at the correct temperature. Oh, yeah... it is 5 euro per liter. Worth every cent! Clean bathrooms--never pass up a free bathroom in Rome--but mind you the sinks operate by foot pedal. (You're welcome.) ;) read more

Honestly one of the best places we ate at in Rome. It looks tiny and old school but the food really is worth it and you can't beat the prices. This place was dreadful. We ate here when we first landed in Rome and checked in to our hostel across the street. It looked unkempt, but I kept an open mind. The first thing I noticed was that the menu was packed with a huge number of dishes. How can a restaurants food taste good if they spread themselves so thin? Maybe that's the point. Variety distracts people. The next thing that caught my eye was the fact that the glasses were dirty. There is never an excuse for that. Also, the water came in bottles for which they eventually charged us (13 euros for two). The food finally came out. I tried to play it really safe by ordering a simple four cheese gnocchi. The pasta was not fresh, and the sauce was really bland and watery. That's all it was. My travel companions both ordered the same pizza with prosciutto. It was just a cheese pizza with some prosciutto thrown in a pile on either side. The combination of this crappy food and our jet lag left us feeling very lethargic, so were about ready to take a nap. But no, of course this place has to ruin that too. After our plates were cleared, we had to wait 20 minutes for our check. We tried looking for our waiter, but wouldn't you know it: he's nowhere to be found. Overall, despite being somewhat cheap, this place is a tourist trap and we were duped. If you are the touristy who generally eats fast food or packs sandwiches, eat here. If you have a more discerning palate, look somewhere else. Also, the 20 euro wine was shit. read more

Service receives zero stars. Food is two and a half. Server seated us quickly and was prompt about giving us the complementary bruschetta. But never came back to take our order..we flagged him down twice but it still took 10 min after he took two orders from different tables. He took others orders before us so we figured he didn't speak English because he was so quiet and didn't smile. Food was good enough. Others in my party liked their pasta dishes and their calzone. My pizza was fine, nothing special to be honest. Barley any ingredients, crust not crispy, and not hot enough. My cappuccino was very good though, also could be warmer. Maybe I expected too much for my first time in Rome. We asked for dessert menus and when trying to order, he bluntly cut off my aunt and gestured to follow him to the dessert table. He then instructed her to choose from what they had left. So he does speak English! Dessert was too sweet and not fresh. Just not good. Don't do it. Server did not smile and except for calling out the orders, did not speak to us. After our meal, we called him and asked for the bill. Seemed like everyone got theirs before ours. After we flagged him down again, he came with our bill 5 min later. No apologies or smiles. Whatever, we paid and left. As we were leaving, we saw fresh dessert being brought out. No word about that. This place is LITERALLY (not figuratively, literally) my favorite restaurant in the world and is honestly the best restaurant I have ever eaten at. We originally decided to eat here our first night in Rome because we were staying at a hostel on the same street and were too tired to wander far for food after flying in. What an excellent decision!! The staff was friendly, even giving us free bruschetta and just generally making us feel welcome. The house wine is cheap, but good. All the food - both pizza and pasta tasted fresh and delicious. The following night when deciding on dinner plans, there was really no debate. Back to Taverna Pretoriana it was. The wait staff remembered us, greeted us welcomingly, and even gave us a free liter of wine. We stayed until after closing talking with them and enjoying every moment of being in Rome. The place is decent size and the service was quite good. Then menu was quite huge and the cuisine was Italian. Right next to the Yellow Rome hostel and Alessandro's Palace hostel, so very convenient if you're staying at either of those two places. Being right in the middle of a bunch of hostels and hotels, you would think this place is overrun with tourists, but it's actually not. We ate here half a dozen times, and the vast majority of patrons are locals, which is a great sign. The waiters are all fluent in English, but it's very seldom heard in the restaurant. There's lots of regulars, most of them elderly Romans. This place also gets pretty crowded near meal times. The food is both authentic and delicious. As soon as you sit down, they bring you a basket of bread and some bruschetta with soft, warm bread right out of the oven and fresh tomatoes. There is a 1 euro bread fee per person, but no service or any other charges/taxes. My favorite dish here was the fettuccine with truffles, which had an amazingly strong truffle taste. It was creamy, but not overly so. The ravioli is also really good, along with the roasted chicken. I would avoid their pizzas and steaks. The red house wine, which is 6 euros per liter, is quite good. Service is fast and the waiters are really friendly. Most of them crack jokes and try really hard to make you satisfied and get things to you as fast as possible. Eat here enough and the owner starts giving you discounts! read more

I've realized a few things after staying in Rome for 3 days, theres so many sites and places, but the food.....the food is just not all quite there. Maybe its because they eat less portions compared to us? Maybe we've been over exposed by generations of Americanized Italian food, but here, it doesn't spark too much excitement. If anything, the pizza is where its at. Never have I found a disappointing pizza throughout Rome, and this place isn't an exception. Came here two nights in a row (after taking advantage of their awesome discount for hostel members and convenience) and it turned out pretty good. Food was decent, even though the house wine sucked horribly. -The pizza with the seafood and pretoria selection was most memorable with such a thin crust and fresh ingredients. -The salads and Salame/Cheese were ok. -Penne pasta with vodka sauce was good -Cannelloni and Bolognese sauce pasta wasn't good Next time, I'd probably venture further for some better food if time and cost wasn't an issue. read more

So, I'll tell you now so you don't have to read too far if you get bored easily. The €2 house wine is the best thing about this place. I understand waiting for fresh food but I waited about 40 minutes for absolute garbage. I just drank more and more of the wine cause the drunker you are, the better the food tastes. I got the roast pork and the spaghetti carbonara. The roast pork was cooked to death, brought back to life, and baked to death again to make sure they killed it the first time. The pig didn't die to be disrespected like this. It was so over cooked I couldn't believe it but I wasn't gonna walk anywhere after walking around all day so I forced it down. The spaghetti carbonara was curdled and lukewarm. CURDLED! Fam it was curdled. I thought Italy was supposed to have the best pasta but Olive Garden does better than this. Price, check; food, check; good customer service, check; finding an overall good Italian restaurant that is not snooty and expensive, PRICELESS!! This restaurant was about 3 blocks away from our hotel, Montecarlo on Via Palestro which is not too far from Termini Roma. The wait staff speaks English so that help for us that haven't mastered Italian. I can"t really recommend dishes because I am writing this review 7 months after the fact. Side tip: it is common for Italian restaurants to charge for bread. 2nd side tip: wine is way cheaper than water so drink up!! read more

Went here a couple of times because the food was so good. The reason for my 4 stars is because this place gets packed for dinner and the service becomes lacking, lunch is a little less crowded and the staff is more attentive. Was great food for a really great price. I had the pesto pasta and the 1/4 chicken. The chicken in particular was very delicious.
