Took my parents here for dinner and it was a fun dining experience with the DIY spring rolls. Highly recommend calling in advance to make a reservation as the restaurant is pretty small and they may run out of the DIY deep fried catfish spring rolls. For 4 people, the medium size catfish was the perfect size! It came with vermicelli, assorted veggies, rice paper, and dipping sauce. We also ordered the crab fried rice, tofu clay pot, pork chops, and the rock and roll beef. I must say after finishing the spring rolls, everything else tasted mediocre. The fried rice didn't stand out and a bit too salty. The pork chops were a bit dry, the tofu clay pot was very flavorful but too salty as well. The beef was tender but the flavors was alright. I have been wanting to try the catfish wrap for a while and I finally made it. I called to make reservations and put in my order at that time. By the time we sat down and got our drinks and put in the rest of the order, the catfish was ready. It was fresh, crispy and perfectly seasoned. Absolutely delicious and I would definitely recommend. So one of my friend's said that I had to try this place. They are famous for their fried catfish. So I went there to check it out. It is in a strip mall across from the college. There is ample parking and we found a spot not to far away. When driving down Bruceville you can see their sign at the corner. However from the parking lot you really don't see any signage. We entered and there were only two tables occupied. They greeted us and lead us to a table. The lady brought us water and then an older lady came to see if we were ready to order. My wife said we needed some more time. The menu is huge with so many options. They even have Pho here too. We of course got the catfish and she said a small one since there were only two of us. I told her I ate a lot. I hop it was big or I anted a big one. We got the lemon grass pork and the chicken fried rice. Started with that. The lady said it was a lot. I was hungry though. She said we would have to sit at a different table since all of this food would not fit at the small 2 person table we were at. She moved us to a 4 person table. The food started coming out and there was a large plate of what looked like raw vegetables and pickled stuff to. A plate of vermicelli I think with green onions and peanuts on it. I asked the server what all this was for and she said it was for the fish. The pork came and then the big fish. It looked pretty big for a small one. I wonder what a big one looks like. The fish was really crispy and it was good. I am not sure it was worth the $60 bucks but I did like it. Plus it came with all the extras. I really loved the flavor of the pork. It was really yummy. I love catfish and some friends, well they're really family at this point, said they had a place that has catfish like we've never had before and they weren't lying. I love new food experiences and even more so when the food is good. We had the largest whole fried catfish I've ever seen. It's so hard to explain the flavor, the rub/crust was crunchy, salty And slightly sweet all at the same time. It comes with rice papers and veggies to make your own spring roll. Tay Giang is the only place in Sacramento that serves up DIY catfish spring rolls, and is great when you're craving something healthy and different. Grilled Butterflied Catfish DIY Wraps (Spring Rolls) 4/5* Tay Giang's version is ok and can satisfy my cravings, but it is a copy-cat version of the original slow-baked catfish from Southern California. It seems the catfish here is deep-fried, I believe to cut down on the wait time, but I still prefer the original Vietnamese version where they can take up to 45 minutes to slow roast the catfish. Still, this version is tasty with strong marination and slather of scallion/peanut oil. The deep frying creates a lot of crispy pieces for added texture to your spring roll. But warning.. if you order the small catfish, there isn't much meat and is mostly fried crispy parts, so I recommend the medium fish. Like all Vietnamese dishes, it comes with loads of fresh veggies and herbs. I also like that they provide the flattened vermicelli noodles (banh hoi) instead of rice noodles. They also give you a variety of sauces: tamarind fish sauce, regular fish sauce, and freshly chopped chilis to spice up as you'd like. Authentic Catfish Claypot 5/5* Catfish stewed in a peppery carmelized sauce. They didn't have the usual boiled egg with it, but this dish was bursting in flavor. Sweet, salty, savory, and lots of black pepper with hints of spice from the rest chilis. Best eaten with rice to soak up all the sticky sauce and flavor. This dish sends me back to my childhood days. Bun Bo Hue 4/5* Flavorful and lots of meats and veggies. I'm not a spicy eater, so I thoroughly enjoyed this BBH. Most other places make it too spicy right off the bat, but here they let you add your own spice. The noodles are springy and broth is perfectly salted to enhance the beefy flavors. Banh Xeo 1/5* Don't get this. This was terrible. The batter was so thick and deep fried, inside had too much bean sprouts and onions and not enough pork or shrimp. I've never seen onions in a banh xeo before and it was weird. The batter was what really ruined everything. Banh Xeo is supposed to be thin and crispy, but this was thick and crunchy. I've also tried their pho here and it was decent but not memorable. The star here, of course, is the catfish spring rolls. They do have an extensive menu though, serving a variety of authentic Vietnamese dishes and well as vegetarian-friendly. They've gone thru tough times during the pandemic and I've seen vandalism and broken windows, but I'm glad they survived the pandemic, because this is the spot when it comes to Vietnamese catfish dishes. *4.5* Update post over 1 year later! Tay Giang has gotten popular enough to the point where there is a chance you will actually not be able to eat in on a weekend if you don't call in a couple of days before to make a reservation, which is great news for them and not so great news for us. My family found this out the hard way when we showed up on a Saturday after a long day of driving and were unfortunately told they did not have room to accommodate us. But wait! They let us know we could order an entire catfish to go (although only small ones were left in stock), which from ordering to walking back out the door took exactly 25 minutes for the catfish and two plates of beef and shrimp skewers. They provided us with 3 boxes of fresh vegetables, which was way too much and therefore the perfect amount, rice paper, and many sauce containers. Eating this in the comfort of home was a revolutionary experience, and when we uncovered the metal foil lid we were greeted with a catfish that appeared to be the same size as the XL from the year before (see pictures for hand comparison) - the only kind of inflation I can accept. Tay Giang -- I've been here several times, so how could I not write a review yet? This place is one of my favorite spots and hands down has the best fish spring rolls in Sacramento--and maybe the only place around that does them this well. That's really what they're known for, and for good reason. The fish spring rolls are fresh, flavorful, and perfectly balanced with herbs. The dipping sauce is delicious without being overpowering, which I really appreciate. Everything else on the menu is solid too, but the fish spring rolls are the star of the show and worth the visit alone. For my party of 3 people, they asked us if we made reservations before hand (which we obviously didn't have), but decided to wait it out which took about 10-15 minutes before we were seated. Just by observing the place while waiting, it just seemed like they were short staffed and nobody was rushing to buss tables so there were a few tables open, they just weren't clean. Also, a lot of families come in groups here, so it did seem like a full house. We ended up getting seated in a tucked corner of the restaurant, and it took a while for us to get water and our orders taken. My table ordered the DIY spring rolls with the fried catfish, beef carpaccio, and the grilled pork chop rice plate. Overall, everything was very good!! My friend mentioned that the rice plate was supposed to come with pork skin, but they ran out, so they added extra vegetables to the salad on the side to compensate. The beef carpaccio was probably my favorite out of everything we ordered. It originally does come topped with a TON of peanuts, but we requested it to have none due to allergies. I stood in the lobby for about 20 minutes waiting to be seated. During that time, I was never acknowledged or even greeted by the woman at the front desk. Several groups who arrived after me were helped and seated while I continued to wait without anyone saying a word to me. From what I observed, the people who were seated ahead of me were Asian, while I was ignored. I can't know the reason, but it left me feeling like I was treated differently. After waiting 20 minutes without any acknowledgment, I left and ate at the place next door. The biggest highlight of my recent Sactown trip and only really decent Viet restaurant is Tay Giang. Most notably is their fried catfish with all the trimmings. The flavors they used to season and garnish the fish before and after a perfect deep fry/bake is amazingly crispy and flavorful. To enhance the experience further, the herbs, pickled veggies, lettuce and thin style rice vermicelli seals the deal inside a rice paper you prepare and roll up to your liking. The other dishes rhat were equally impressive are the shrimp wrapped in sugarcane and the beef carpaccio. The beef in particular is a marvelous balance of herbs, onions, lime plus presentation makes them top notch and so tender. I did have their three color pudding (che ba mau) and that was bland. You really have to plan strategically to dine here. No joke, my friend has been telling me about the fried catfish in forever. Their hours are 5-9 pm Thursday to Monday. I made reservations for Sunday at 5pm, I preordered the small catfish and we added the beef carpaccio. Everything was so fresh and DELICIOUS! I highly recommend this place and dish-well worth it! As we sat at our table which was close to the front entry, they turned many people away for not having a reservation. By about 6pmish (an hour after opening) not only did they turn people away-they said they ran out of the catfish. This place is open Thursday-Monday 5pm-9pm; closed Tuesday and Wednesday. The ambiance in the restaurant is nice and quaint. The restrooms were clean and overall and nice place and location for dinner. Ample parking. This place is a hidden gem-although not really a restaurant to go to as an impromptu-reservations are a must! It is a must experience. We had to ask for more wraps for a medium catfish. My husband and I finished 85% of a medium one. -kids meatball pho - I love that they offer kids meals and it's a decent portion. Just know that the food is amazing. The ambience was compressed as it is a corner restaurant and the seating was tight overall they made it comfortable for our party of five and we were able to enjoy our meal. When we arrived at opening time, there were already like two other parties waiting ahead of us, and it seemed like they had reservations as well. I wasn't sure how much food would come out with the catfish. I definitely feel that the recommended serving size is accurate. I would say that I would have preferred to have more rice paper and noodles to go with our dish, so next time, I would order extra. There is ample herbs, and the sauce is soooo good. The fish is so fresh and not fishy smelling! The fried texture of the fish is divine! I would totally order this dish again. Totally worth it and I understand the hype. My friend made a reservation and ordered the catfish in advance which made the service very efficient. The service was excellent. The food even better! I saw people ordering the fish and getting it for take out too. The fish is outstanding! It would have probably fed four. It's a nice place and we sat and ate for a while and never felt rushed. The smoky, flavorful char on the fish is unbeatable, and of course, it's not the full experience without the classic newspaper placemats--if you know, you know!
