This review is going to be one that is based solely on accountability and moral responsibility of business owners. My son who is 14 years of age is accompanied by his mother in attempt to get his hair dyed - perfectly ok on the surface - behind the scenes as his father I have already informed him and his mother that I did not approve. Without my consent my son is in the chair in the process of having his hair dyed - behind my back essentially - I figure out what is happening in the middle of the service and I call the salon to inform them of my concern. I inform them that this service has not been approved by me and should not continue. The salon owner dismisses my concern and decides not to take the step toward doing the right thing. Legally were they obligated to terminate the service - no - but again as a business owner you have some sort of moral obligation to do what's right. In no situation would I feel compelled to complete a service or sell a product to a minor without full consent from their parents and would be especially adamant about not moving forward if there was any push back from either parent. So Taylor Hair Dezign lacks the moral compass I deem adequate - therefore they are being criticized with a less than positive review. I prefer to do business with people and businesses that lean on the side or right. read more

I had very long hair, & wanted to get a lot cut off to donate my hair. They made the donation process easy and the whole experience was really pleasant. I'm so happy with the result. WOW, what a great experience I had with Taylor Hair Dezign. I came across the salon during a UPS store visit. I noticed the salon and the door was open. So I went in to be greeted by the most vibrant, welcoming young lady with a very bubbly personality. She presented compassion for my hair experience. Another stylist has completely destroyed my hair and I was a orange mess. The color was all wrong with patches missing. As an American African female we can be obsessed with our hair so being in this position I was lost. She made an appointment and assured me they could correct my hair. I felt heard. So I returned and was greeted by the most welcoming staff ever. The owner's personality was outstanding, and very comical. My hair color turned out to be a fabulous blond. I'm a loyal Taylor Hair Dezign Customer!! I've been going to this place for over 20 years now. When I was a little girl, my mother and I met one of the hairstylists for a wedding, and she gave us her card. I've been going there ever since. Growing up, I've gotten haircuts at other salons (and even Supercuts which was a NIGHTMARE). So, after many many MANY experiences at other places, I finally realized that nobody can be as good as the stylists at Taylor Hair Dezign. I've gotten my hair done for all my dances, formals, proms, etc., and they have ALWAYS done my hair EXACTLY how I wanted it. All I had to do was bring them a picture. All my haircuts and hair coloring have been done EXACTLY how I like them. Six years ago, I moved to New York, and there are so many different salons here that it makes me nervous. For my first 5 years here, I'd only get my hair done at Taylor Hair Dezign when I visit my family & friends in Chicago about twice a year. This past year has been a bit difficult for me, so after some in-depth research, I got my haircut at a salon here in New York. The stylist did an okay job, but I was a bit disappointed since she didn't do it exactly how I wanted it. So, after that, I've decided that I will only get my haircut at Taylor Hair Dezign FROM NOW ON!! The place is really clean, and the women that work here are SO nice and absolutely phenomenal! If you're getting a quick haircut, I'm sure you can get squeezed in. However, if you're doing something extensive, coloring, curling, hairstyles, etc, make sure you make an appointment, and when you do, tell them what you plan on doing, so that they can book you with the right person and for a right time. (Sometimes certain things would take a half hour, but some others could take 2 hours.) The prices are very reasonable for the quality of work that they do. Whenever somebody asks me where they should get their hair done, I ALWAYS recommend this place. No matter if you're all the way out in the 'burbs, it's worth the trip!! read more

Looking for a reasonably-priced hair stylist in the neighborhood, my mother-in-law recommended Taylor Hair Dezign. She has been taking her sons to this local for a decade, now, for their hair cuts. I called on a Saturday to get an appointment, and they booked me for that afternoon! I was thrilled! As soon as I walked in the door, I was serviced immediately. Rasmia was my hair stylist, and she gave me exactly the type of cut I wanted...did not cut too much of my long hair off! :) She also did not jabber uncontrollably, but she showed interest in my life/work. My husband loved the cut, especially since she straightened my normally crazy-curly locks. The price for the cut was only $30 - quite a bit less than the steep $150 I paid in Lincoln Park. Never been here. I just had to speak out about one of their employees. Honestly, I was told it was the owner. Anywho. I had the privilege to correct the "work" of said employee. The client had requested a Brazilian. A few days after her wax, she asked me to remove the areas of hair that the employee didn't get. I agreed & upon arrival I analyzed what areas she wanted fixed. And it wasn't areas. It was the entire thing. The amount that needed to be "fixed" was absolutely jaw dropping that she would leave her name on that.. claiming it's a Brazilian. Client called to speak about her issue and the employee stated "you should of come back" & "I was very thorough" & wouldn't refund her for the NOT THOROUGH "Brazilian" . Did I mention client is a returning client. Meaning she has been there several times. Not only did you expect her to feel comfortable to come back to you for a wax you clearly aren't trained to do, ( Or you gave zero shits about hers.) You lied to her about being thorough. She had no idea how much hair you had actually left on her , until I told and showed her. But you do. & now I do too. She expected she was in good hands. Professional hands. You chose not to refund her and offered her a free facial? A return client. Smh. You manipulated and took advantage of her. Or you took on a service you weren't prepared to do. Even this being our first time there, I came away "knowing" the owner, the barber, and a friend of one of the other stylists. I was also shocked to find out this little place has SO MANY SERVICES. An Awesome Experience!!! I recently attended the Hispanic Summer Program on it's 28th Anniversary and 2 week intensive course on Preaching and Colloquy at North Park Theological Seminary in Chicago. I came prepared, excited to learn, and looking for a great spiritual and cultural experience. Coming from Trenton, New Jersey, I figured I would get my hair done before I went to Chicago, because I would not be seeing my beautician for 2 weeks. Well, the moment I arrived at the Seminary, I was rained on, excessively and in need to get my hair done before the week was out. Without expecting much, I walked past Taylor Hair Dezign and wondered if the beautiful woman wearing a hijab in the window would be able to style my thick hair. After about 3 days I decided to book an appointment. The next day I came to my appointment and got my hair done. What brought me back 2 more times before I left was the owner, Rasmia Abulsheikh; the beautiful woman I saw wearing the hijab in the window. Her personality, charm, and professionalism made me feel very comfortable in a new City. I really appreciated that. I came back a couple of days later to get a facial and enjoyed the care and OUTSTANDING customer service. We immediately became fast friends and before I left North Park, I came back again, this time she did my hair and facial. We talked, got to know one another, and shared stories of family, faith, culture, and our homelands. The best time I had in Chicago was spent with Rasmia and her wonderful staff at Taylor Hair Dezign. It was an answer to my prayers and one that I will forever cherish. It helped me to see another Latin perspective through the life of this Puerto Rican & Palestinian woman and to see sisterhood through interfaith lens. Ive always had great service here. Rasmia has been cutting my hair for a while and does an amazzzzing job and she is FAST, but never compromises on quality. You get great quality, great service in a super quick and efficient manner. Another thing, this place is FABULOUS for hijabis. Hijabis struggle to find a place to get hair cut, colored and styled, Taylor Hair Dezign has a seperate area in the back for hijabis. The price cant be beat either! I loved this place -- I've made appointments and came in as an occasional walkin. Been to multiple hair stylists at Taylor over the years since I moved into the neighborhood and never had a disappointing cut. The stylists were always professional (almost) and friendly. Recently my personal choice is to have a basic cut to the lean, low maintenance crewcut. I would score these folks an easy 4 or 5 except for my last visit and why I haven't returned. On my last visit, the stylist decided to add a surcharge for the "extra hair" disposal -- I never had that happen to me before or anyplace else. I was so put off by that, I simply paid and said farewell. Despite the fact my cut took only 10 minutes allowing the next person in queue to jump right in, the stylist either got greedy or was having a bad day. Since then, I haven't returned. read more

I love this salon! I've been coming here since I was a child. Olivia can cut hair with her eyes closed, that's how awesome she is. Rasmia did my hair for prom back in 2008 & since then, she has gotten even more amazing with the hairstyles she can do! Sam cuts my son's hair & I was so happy to find him as my son's barber bc my son has thick, semi-course hair. They also do nails, waxing & eyebrows be 'on fleek' when you get them done here!!! Words cannot even describe the horrific time I had at this establishment. Due to heavy traffic, I was 10 minutes late to my appointment. Despite calling ahead of time and letting the receptionist know, my stylist (Olivia) complained the very MOMENT I stepped through the door. This place advertises that they are hijabi friendly and when I meet my stylist, the first thing she does is complain about my hair being covered. I had called the salon a week prior to confirm their separate area for hijabis and to ask if any of their stylists did African-American hair. Despite being assured that they did, this clearly was not the case. Once my hijab was off, my stylist kept making inappropriate comments about my hair's texture and thickness. She barely even washed my hair, and the whole time she kept saying that it was going to take too long and asked me if I had told the people when I called what my length and thickened was. I replied that I had and she kept telling me that she was going to have to charge me extra. Whatever. After the shampooing, which lasted all but 5 minutes, she took me to the back room next to the washing station (all behind a curtain) and kept complaining about the heat and not wanting to be in the back room for hijabis. At once point, another potential client came in for nail services and my stylist rudely told the receptionist that there was no way she could do it and kept repeating that I "had a lot of hair" and it was already going to make her go over schedule. She then told me while combing out my hair that I should "deep condition" my hair more and make it softer to get rid of my curls. As a Black woman who is proud of my natural hair, I found it offensive that my stylist (who clearly had ZERO experience with Black hair) was now telling me how my texture was supposed to be. She also made comments about why my hair wasn't chemically relaxed. When I told her that it was unhealthy, she replied "oh". An hour and fifteen in, my hair is being pulled and torn as my stylist attempts to comb through it with a fine tooth comb, even though a wide tooth comb should always be used with curly hair. She then asks me where I'm from. I reply that I'm from the state's and she has a surprised look on her face. She then asks if I'm Muslim, and I replied yes. She asked if I spoke Arabic and when I replied no, she said "Well you're Muslim, right? Oh well I guess you don't have to speak Arabic then." At this point, from her comments about my hair and how late it was making her, to my nonexistent Arabic and not looking Muslim enough for her, I was near tears. I was already insecure about my natural hair since I had recently cut it and she only made my uneasiness worse. She also got upset that she was not able to take before and after pictures since I covered my hair. She also kept assuming I would come back to her for this terrible service and made me promise that she could take pictures of the back and post them. Since she had complained so much about my hair, I opted out of the trim and stated that I just wanted her to finish the flat iron. Long story short, this entire ordeal was 2.5 hours. 2.5 hours to just shampoo, blowfly and flat iron my hair. For reference, I've had my hair colored, relaxed, washed, blow dried and flat ironed in 2 hours, so that time wait was ridiculous. On their website, the shampoo, blow dry, and flat iron deal was $20 and the hair cut was $30. I only wanted my ends trimmed (half an inch max) and thought that was pretty steep by itself. However, since I didn't have my hair trimmed, I thought for sure it wouldn't be the $55-the extra amount due to my hair's "massive thickness". When I get to the front desk to pay, I'm told that the amount was $55! I told the receptionist that I didn't have my hair cut, so it shouldn't be that high. She turns to my stylist who tells me that it was indeed $55, even without the hair cut! I'm baffled at this point how this lady managed to charge me almost $40 extra, but I was so fed up I paid the bogus amount and left. Long story short, this was the worst experience I've ever had. I'm livid that I paid darn near $60'to be insulted and talked about for almost three hours. I know my hair is thicker than what they're use to doing, but I've never had a stylist take three hours to just FLAT IRON my hair. That and the rude comments about my hair were out of line. To kept insinuating that your customer should either relax or keep flat ironing their hair to get rid of their curls is disgusting. I'm proud of my natural hair, and only straighten it when I want less maintenance as a treat. Safe to say this is my first and last time at this establishment and I will warn others about this place as well. Hope the extra money was worth it to these owners. Update: Owner called me personally on 6/10 and apologized for my experience and stated that what happened was unacceptable and invited me back to try the salon again. read more

HORRIBLE PLACE! I do not recommend it. The owner does not know how to cutt hair. She messed up my hair. It wasn't even! Botha sides of my hair are different lengths! She does not know what she is doing. She cutt my hair literally in 10 min. She didn't even measure it and talks the whole time. I am never going there again not recommending it. She needs to go back to school and learn! I don't know how the north park students do it. I don't let anyone cutt my hair and I don't know what I trusted that place. Only bc it has a groupon special. Biggest mistake of my life and when she did my nails my toes nails were not filed correct. They were all wavy and too SHORT! I'm not trying to get fungus. I needed a keratin treatment really bad, and my curtain stylist wanted to charge me outrage price and said it was because I had lots of hair and very long. I have thick hair but not that thick and not long at all. My sister recommended this place to me and told me to see the owner who has always done her hair. I had my daughters wedding coming up and decided I needed to really get my hair in shape and boy did I. I did the keratin treatment and went back a few weeks later for color and highlights and I was so pleased with the way my hair felt and looked. The best part about it was that Rasmia and staff were so nice and everyone talked to each other. I'm usually nervous about going to new places and don't talk much however this experience was the complete opposite. I LOVE this place. I have now been there for touch up, color, treatment for split ends, eyebrows, haircut and I will continue to go Taylor Hair Dezign. I love this place! I've been coming here since I was 19. Everyone has done my hair including Steve Taylor, he was the very first owner of Taylor Hair. Now I get my hair done by Rasmia, she is the third owner of Taylor Hair and for the most part Rasmia did a lot of improvement of the salon, very clean, very professional and the most important parts are very friendly place and lots of sense of humor. I also recommend Sam the BARBER the master of the blade, he does an amazing haircuts, fades, shaving beards and line ups for men. Eyebrows threading which he had done my eyebrows for 3 years, I just love it! Olivia had also cut my hair when Rasmia is not available, Olivia is also great when she layered my hair/haircut.
