I've gotten my hair done by Brenda before and it looked really good. This time around I booked an appointment with Sunny. I asked for a balayage and this is what I got. I also came out with a chemical burn on my ear from the bleach. I feel pretty upset and sad because I used to come to this salon often but now I will not be going anymore. Last photo is a photo of my hair now ... I got it fixed in China town. Feel so upset about how much money I spent.
Thought I would review this hair salon, if only because reviews helped me a ton when deciding where to get my hair done. I live in St. Louis and am from California (aka where all the famous expensive hairstylists are), and haven't really found a place that is super experienced on asian hair in St. Louis--for anyone (asian) in St. Louis, if you're really paranoid about hair like me I would get your hair done in Chicago. I was looking for a place that offers balayage, babylights, and Olaplex, and this salon does just that! For a great price as well. And for anyone new to dying hair always get Olaplex, it does wonders for damaged, bleached hair!! I've been in twice so far. During my first session, I got a haircut, ash brown balayage + Olaplex on virgin black hair, with Brenda. I have weird naturally poofy, voluminous, frizzy, and wavy hair (weird for an asian), and this is the first time I've worn my hair natural (without a straight perm) since I was in elementary school. So I was super ambivalent both about cutting my hair and bleaching my hair. Brenda did an amazing job both cutting my hair, and lightening it up to a nice ash brown. And she was super sweet! During my second session (~3 months later), I opted for babylights + Olaplex to a super nice ash blonde, with Savannah. Savannah was also super cool, and did a great job. I've gotten so many compliments since, which always feels nice right? Haha. If I could do it over again, I probably would have gotten babylights first, just because if the end goal is any shade of blonde, babylights lightens up much more of your hair than a balayage does, and makes the end result a little more blended than balayage. Lastly, if you get lucky, there's easy free street parking on the side streets on either side of the salon. Otherwise you're stuck roaming around for a while and parallel parking.
So happy to have found Savanha at the Beehive Salon. She was recommended to me by a woman in Lincoln Park. I complimented her hair, her color was fantastic. She said it was Savana who colored it at The Beehive. I went to Instagram to see some of her samples and I found several hair colors I loved! After going to 3 different expensive salons, I thought I would give Savanha a try. Well, I can say she is fantastic! She listened to what I wanted and she explained everything for the entire color process. She was honest about the amount of time I would be in the chair and the cost which I appreciated. The last 3 salons did nothing but take my money. Thanks so very much! You helped me cross into the next phase of life!
I made the mistake of box dyeing my hair. I wanted to dye my hair pink balayage, and all the places downtown either hadn't tried a pink color or were offering it for $400. At a friend's request, I came here and got my hair dyed at a normal price and had a friendly hair stylist! Monica was really thorough and gentle with my hair. It was easy to make an appointment and I got a hair color close to what I was looking for despite my having box dyed it two weeks prior. Also, being Asian, my hair is not one that many salons downtown seem to know how to work with. The Beehive Salon was so professional, friendly, and still realistic about what I should expect. I will be coming back here, even if it requires me to take a long Uber ride, because this place is WORTH IT.
The Beehive puts the B in Blonde! :) I have gotten my hair done by Sunny for awhile now, mainly because she is so talented and knowledgable when it comes to coloring hair, but also for her uplifting attitude she has while working her magic. Her salon definitely makes me feel at home and happy. The space is very intimate and you really feel like you're getting the V.I.P. treatment. I always feel like a model coming out of the salon. Highly recommend it for a self pampering day! The prices are a lot better then the expensive downtown salons. Also I always find parking for free, which adds to the sound mind experience. :)
Loved this place I'm a hairstylist myself and I'm very picky about my hair and Senada did an amazing job!!! I feel like a Princess/mermaid with my new violet/red hair color!
I thought I was gonna be happy with this. I'm not. After looking in the mirror with better lighting I see I didn't get auburn highlights. I have blonde. I don't wanna go back because I don't wanna bleach my hair again. I also don't see I have many layers like I asked. My hair was curled so I couldn't tell. None of the top of my hair was dyed. So my highlights start randomly in the middle. I should have said something. Now I'm out to go buy hair dye in a box to cover this up. Pic shows what I wanted and what it looks like. I paid almost $200. I just had a baby and I've been neglecting myself and for the first time in 10 years I wanted to look nice but it didn't turn out that way
A-Mazing!!! Brenda gave me a perfect rose gold balayage and lob haircut. It was the first time I'd ever tried this style, and a drastic color change. She listened to my concerns and nailed it!! She was attentive through the 2 hour long process. I was her one and only client through the entire appointment. And it was really inexpensive. Only 140 for the cut color and hand painted balayage. I will definitely be back.
This is my 5th visit here,I love this place whether its for a hair color change (balayage is popular here) or just a cut and style I have always had a positive outcome. My favorite stylists are Monica and Brenda. I would definitely reccomend this place for a quality hair care experience.
I got my hair done here once last year (i dont remember who but it was an asian girl) and was in love with my hair. I came back last month in order to touch up my roots and blend my hair again. I got Melina as my stylist and i explained to her i wanted a BALAYGE to blend my hair. I even showed her instagram photos. She said okay we will give you some low lights/ foilayge to blend your hair. As she was blow drying my hair I see the choppiness and strands of highlights from the 90s. Do you see how uneven, choppy, blotchy my hair is in these photos? I was so embarrassed to walk around as nothing blended in, rather STOOD OUT. Then was charged $190 for this crap. Supposedly they use "guy tang" products so they charge a hella lot more than before. I had to wait a month to redo my hair somewhere else and the stylist took pictures for me and found blotchiness in my hair. **WARNING**I would never recommend anyone to go here as they are gonna mess up your hair. They probably wont even give me a refund cuz i read the owner fried someones hair off and she went through alot of trouble getting her refund. My sister also had a horrible experience with savannah as she splashed her face with dye, talked on the phone with her bf cuz he opened some credit card. This experience was horrible for the both of us and would NEVER go again. Your stylists need to go get some more training to color hair PROPERLY. Beehive please hire better and stylists. Your salon is going downhill.
I just simply love this place .You'll not only fall in love with the atmosphere, but also with the work all the ladies do. They're so welcoming , clean , very professional, and they do a fantastic job. Sunny is my girl. Totally recommend her. Hands down the best! Every time she's dyed , cut or styled my hair she never disappoints. I actually have a few people I've recommend to her and they've also loved the way she works.
After paying $300 at Salon Yangmi and not getting the hair I wanted, I was upset and unhappy until I found The Beehive! With a recommendation from a friend, I called the salon to book an appointment. The lady who picked up was super kind and asked me to send a picture of my hair as it was and the hair I wanted to see if it could be done. She told me what I wanted was do-able and gave me a price range, half the cost of what I originally paid for at the other salon! Monica was my stylist and she really knew what she was doing. She lightened my hair and got me to the ash blonde/ silver I wanted! It was a great experience and I don't plan to go anywhere else to get my hair done!
I love this place. Monica is an absolute dream and I'd highly recommend her for anyone looking for blonde balayage. She is so sweet and lovely and beyond talented. She also did my wedding hair and I was obsessed. The best salon EVER!!!

I have been coming here for years and have never left this place disappointed!! I also live in the suburbs so to find a place that I am happy with, is definitely worth the drive. I absolutely love Sunny! She always does an amazing job when she colors my hair!!! Sunny always listens to see what I want to do with my hair, give her input and I always leave there so happy! I can always tell that the service there is never rushed as well. The salon is really clean and also during this time with covid-19, precautions are there as well and everything is well sanitized. read more
I'm confused. I posted an update, or so I thought, but I just noticed it wasn't up. Anyways. I went back. And my results..........were FANTASTIC. I had a feeling my last visit was a fluke thing. I know the work these ladies do is great. It just sucks that sometimes, our hair can only take so much. After this most recent visit, my hair is looking healthy happy and vibrant. I've been getting so many compliments and I am confident enough to wear my hair down again. I will be back again soon for a touch up, but no bleaching this time...my hair can't take it. My tip? Be smart about what you do to your hair. read more

About time for an update since it's been nearly five years since my last review. Needless to say, I still LOVE the beehive. Sunny is still my hair fairy godmother. She always strives for excellence. For as light & processed as my hair is, it's in amazing condition! Can not stress enough how much I love the beehive. The salon has gone through an expansion & renovation as well. I love this salon! The service ia amazing and the results even better. My stylist understood what I was going for, the tone and style I wanted. I have lots of pride for my hair and having it taken cared for by someone who really knows what they are doing is hard to find in such a big city. I'm going back for my touch-up, and every time after that. read more

My cousin and I walked into beehive very excited because of the great reviews we had read, but unfortunately we didn't leave too happy. Let me start off by saying Sunny is very sweet& made us feel very welcomed. The problem came when our hair was done. I went in for an ombré within my natural hair color & I had showed a picture from the beehives Instagram page so I knew what I wanted. At first I really liked it, but it could've been the lighting at the salon. The next morning I straightened my hair & my hair looks exactly the same as it did before & very streaky. For what I paid plus tip, I'm not happy with what I have. read more

Savannah Lynn is absolutely amazing & always does so good on my hair. From haircuts to bold fashion color, she kills it every time. I'll never let anyone else touch my hair. She keeps interesting conversation and makes sure I'm comfortable before we begin. 10/10 read more

Sunny is amazing with hair, I love her!!! She takes time to listen to what you're looking for and bump out ridiculously amazing results (better than the pictures I showed!). Her salon is trendy and super comfortable. Sunny is extremely easy to talk to, her conversations aren't forced. I've had my hair dyed once and cried from the results. I trusted Sunny after seeing the work she did on my friends hair. She gave me exactly what I wanted, my hair was healthy even after my third session to get it as light as it got. Maribeth is amazing too! She does the eyelashes and makeup there, I had my first set of eyelashes with her and fell head over heels! I feel so naked without them . She was very detailed and explained everything she was doing as well as aftercare and what to avoid. Easy parking out in front or side streets to avoid the meter. I was there for over 2 hours (parked on the side street to avoid having to run out and feed the meter) which did NOT feel like it because they make you feel so comfortable! HIGHLY recommend!!! read more
This review is MOSTLY for eyelashes. 4.5 However. Sunny is the owner, and I had called to make an appt for extensions. She was so sweet and personable. It was like getting on the phone to talk to one of my friends. Great customer service! I was excited to try both eyelashes and have color done, based on the amazing results I'd seen, both on yelp and on their instagram (@thebeehivechicago.) She sounded very confident in being able to establish the blue-black I've been vying for, but never been able to achieve at other salons, like Asha. I was super excited because my friend got some beautiful eyelash extensions from Maribeth, at an affordable price ($150-$175). Come to find out, through their instagram... I've had two additional friends who've frequented this salon, and I didn't know about. hair and makeup results were amazing. Why have I been kept out of the loop!! But that generated a buzz... they've got somethin good goin on here. She gave me a number for Maribeth to set up an appointment directly. I had left a voicemail on Thursday and Saturday, to no avail. My friend recommended me to try texting, and i was able to reach her easily. My appointment was set up for Wednesday. My friend actually prepped me pretty well for what to expect. Don't wear eye makeup, don't workout afterwards... Maribeth did give me some pre-warning, but wasn't quite as clear. She ended up overbooking me, and I had to come back an hour later after my appointment. Because of this, she only charged me for the "classic" eyelash extensions at $150, rather than charge me $170 for the volumizing kind, which is what I received. Regardless... Maribeth was very sweet and patient for my appointment. I do eye makeup every day, butsomehow my eyes were twitchy and uncooperative, and i couldn't get them to relax. I'm sure eye was a difficult client since it made the extensions difficult to apply.. STILL. I loved the results. She was very knowledgable and had no problems answering any of my questions. I only wished they extended further towards the outer corners of my eye... it feels like they stop short. She said I didn't have much eyelashes at the corner to work with.. so hopefully on a refill appointment, that can be remedied. I've already gotten so many compliments, and I think I'm hooked. I don't think I can go back to being without a full set of lashes. She assured me that different looks can be achieved, based on eyelash placement. I can't wait to see the outcome! They feel nearly weightless. It's been 4 days, and I haven't seen very much fallout. Once was due to accidental eye rubbing (within 24 hours, and I'm sure the adhesive hadn't set). And the second time was today, 4 days later, where I woke up and I was probably sleeping on my side or stomach. I'll definitely be back for more! read more

It depends on how light you're trying to go, because it could take multiple sessions. It also depends on your hair length since they use more product for longer hair.
