If you like the taste of mediocre cookies from WalMart or Target then you will love Taylor's Bakery. I've stopped in twice and each time I've purchased only cookies, sugar and chocolate chip. Both times I felt I could have baked a cookie with far more taste. Do they even put butter in their dough??? Seriously, I wonder! Also the cookies are very crumbly and dry. I'm ok with dry but if I bite into it and feel like it turns into saw dust... that's not a cookie I desire. This is said to be a family run bakery for a long time now, so I wanted to give it a shot. Dare I say Taylor's Bakery was lifechanging? I'd been craving the perfect cinnamon roll for 3-4 months, and this time my family decided to drive way out of our way to find the best one. It was pouring rain, but totally worth it. We were in heaven at Taylor's. We ended up getting a ridiculously large variety of pastries for three people. The winners for me were the apple fritters and donut holes, which come in glazed, chocolate, and pumpkin spice. The donut hole flavors were each so delicious and so different that I'd strongly recommend getting a mix of them. Prices were amazing, and my only regret is that I didn't buy more pastries to try. The only disappointing part was that the cinnamon roll was just OK, so I continue my quest. I think they just used regular buttercream-type frosting instead of cream cheese. What a shame! I have to admit that I used to purposely avoid this place because of my loyalty to my favorite place Long's. But I gotta say, Taylor's donuts are really good. I do like the fact that they accept credit/debit cards unlike my aforementioned fave. Their selection is really nice. They have donuts, cookies, tarts, other kinds of pastries and they make cakes! Didn't know they make cakes but they do and they're beautiful. They had a couple on display. Their lemon tart-I loooove lemon and it was delicious. Not too overwhelming and the tart wasn't too hard. I liked their raspberry one too. They have samples of their treats on the counter. Not sure if that changes but, they had the original donut to sample when I visited. That's a nice touch for first timers if they're not sure if what to get or for those that haven't made up their minds yet. They have multiple people taking orders so it makes the process a little faster. And as I mentioned before they accept debit/credit cards. So Taylor's I won't be avoiding you any more. Hours outside of the 9-5 or other bakeries closer to downtown have kept me from Taylor's for too long. I'm so glad I checked them out recently. Came in on a whim before they were closing, expecting to be sold out of nearly everything. Not the case at all! Someone purchased me a birthday cake from here a couple years ago and I knew there were no other options for my girls sweet 16. Winter storm be damned we find out they were closing at noon. We wake up early and brave it. We drive from Brownsburg to 62nd and allisonville luckily the roads were not bad. Plenty of amazing cakes in the case. They even have little serving cakes. So I get 2 individual cakes one for each of my girls and a double layer cake. It was $38.50 which I did not think was bad for a special event. Never thought I'd have another bad experience with Taylor's for my birthday. Last year, we went to pick up my cake and there was a big crack down the middle of the cake. This year, there were two issues. On the original day for cake pickup (June 21st-my actual birthday), my sister went to view and get the cake. To her dismay, they made the cake order incorrectly. Instead of a yellow cake w/ caramel icing, she was given a cake with chocolate icing. Now, my family has been ordering the same order for my birthday ever year, so she knew immediately that it was wrong. She spoke with management and they said she could come back the following day to get the correct cake order. They still gave her the chocolate cake free of charge because the cake was needed for my birthday (side note, I've never been a fan of chocolate icing on a cake). To see that cake...it was just so disappointing. So the next day we got the caramel icing Birthday cake and when we pulled it out the box, the cake was coming apart (insert facepalm). I tired to enjoy the cake, but it didnt taste right. And the caramel icing even looked darker than normal. I hate to say it, but a family tradition might come to an end. I have no idea why I haven't put in a review for Taylor's before now! I have had many fabulous cookies and cakes from them over the years. The cakes are so much better than the grocery store varieties! You can so easily taste the real butter and other ingredients like grandma used to use to bake cakes from scratch! Prices are extremely reasonable. The cookies are fabulous! This is a great place to go if you need fun decorated cookies for a holiday party (they had fun turkey cookies in the case today!). They also have unfrosted cookies in classic varieties such as chocolate chip that are really top notch! What prompted this review today is that in addition to always providing great chocolate chip cookies to finishers after the Monumental Marathon, this year they gave coupons for free quarts of ice cream to all of us insane folks who ran one of the races last Saturday in the freezing cold (I'm only half-crazy so just ran the half-marathon). I hadn't tried their ice cream yet, and absolutely could not pass up this opportunity! I just had a bowl of the triple chocolate ganache, and oh my, I think I need to go for another run! I found this place on instinct, and drove out of my way on a hunch, and it was so worth the trip! The cinnamon Danish I bought my family is one of the best things I have ever had in my mouth. I am now having fantasy thoughts of driving back there from Chicago. Just as precious as the delicious cake was the classic old school service of the dear ladies behind the counter. We are fortunate that it is in our neck of the woods (or not as my toddler asks to get something every time we are on our way home)! So my mom has been ranting and raving about Taylor's bakery... She has heard nothing but good things, so I decided to grab a birthday cake for her from here to celebrate her 59th birthday. When I walked in, this place looks like a bakery but they have many things other than just donuts. They have flavored popcorn, chocolate covered pretzels, cookies, cakes, cheesecakes, the list goes on. I really appreciated the variety. I chose to get a round vanilla, white frosted cake and got a message on it as well. The cake is massive and I also got a few yeast and cake donuts. You WILL absolutely want the cake donuts over the yeast! Hands down. They are phenomonal. Lastly, I loved the service here! The young lady who helped me was a high school student. How do I know I love Taylor's Bakery? Here's an example. A few months ago, Taylor's had one of their delivery vans stolen. I remember reading the story and thinking to myself "This hurts." It then occurred to me that I had no genuine connection to Taylor's. I had no particular reason to be touched by this story other than the fact that it was yet another crime happening in our city. It just really genuinely bothered me that a local, family-owned and genuinely friendly business would experience such a thing. Yeah, I actually care about Taylor's Bakery. With two locations, 62nd & Allisonville and Fishers, Taylor's Bakery is the kind of family-owned business that it's easy to get attached to because they take both their products and their service seriously. While this review is addressing the Indy location, I've never actually been to the one in Fishers, the truth is that I can't imagine there being too much difference between the two locations. The Indy location is located in a small strip center just East of Glendale Town Center in a building that also houses a CVS, Dollar General, and a handful of smaller businesses. It's a nondescript locale that has been made up to feel homey as soon as you enter the bakery. It's easily wheelchair friendly and there's such a steady flow of customers that I can't imagine someone wouldn't open the door for you if it was needed. Yesterday, as happens on occasion, I was driving by Taylor's and thought to myself "I need a donut. Now." So, I stopped and picked up three (Who eats just one donut? Freak!) chocolate frosted cake donuts. When I came home last night, it occurred to me to look up my review of Taylor's and, much to my surprise, I discovered I didn't have one. Wow. It's easy, or maybe at least tempting, to forget about bakeries like Taylor's with the growth of the gourmet bakery concept in the Indianapolis area. The truth is that I've probably had better donuts, I'm thinking particularly of Long's, but I've seldom experienced the complete package like I do at Taylor's - great products, great customer service, reasonable prices, and that sense of belonging that for me defines the best businesses. Heck, even Long's can't quite master that last one. Taylor's does. Are you the type of person who forgets about that birthday cake you were supposed to pick up? Taylor's handles custom orders with ONE day's notice. Try to do that at one of the gourmet shops. They'll look at you like you're absolutely insane, promise they'll try, then jack up the price. Taylor's can do it. They do birthday cakes, wedding cakes, breads/rolls, donuts, cookies, pies, and other specialty cakes. I've never had a bad product from them - their donuts taste fresh even at the end of the day (I'm giving you the evil eye, Jack's). You know what's even better? I've never had anything less than friendly service. It ranges from competent service to "welcome back" to "Old friend, I haven't seen you in a while." Seriously. The prices are reasonable, unlike most of the gourmet shops that think $2, $3, and $4 for a donut is justified by their spiffy little logos and sprinkling god knows what on top of the donut. In case you're wondering, it's not. This ain't Tiffany's, just give me a donut. I contemplated moving down to a 4-star review, but the truth is that Taylor's Bakery is very likely my favorite donut shop in the city. I love Long's, but the service frequently is lacking and the line occasionally leaves me wondering if it's actually worth it. I like some of the area other area smalltown shops, but when it comes down to it Taylor's gives me everything I want from a bakery - incredibly good products bought from incredibly kind people at incredibly fair prices. You might accidentally buy lots of pastries when you only went in to order a cake. My most recent trip to Taylor's saw me hanging out in front of the complimentary donut hole basket. They were soft with the perfect density. I ate two and tried to sneak more. In my head, I ate about 10. I ordered six. I ate all six within 20 minutes and it only took that long because I didn't get any milk and was trying to savor the flavor of every bite. If you've never been to Taylor's now is a great time to go! Why? Because it's summertime and what better way to enjoy the season than to enjoy it with the presence of yeast !!!! Everything looks great so be prepared to tell the clerk to "hold on just a second", while you sort through your hunger munchies on the best option available.
