I had brunch here a couple of weeks ago and found that this place has really changed for the worse. Mass confusion and incredibly slow service. I ordered a pancake with poached eggs and it took roughly 45 minutes to get served. I was there with 2 other friends and we each took turns asking what was taking so long. When I finally received my order it turns out that the eggs were poached hard. I really did not want to have to wait any longer, but I brought the dish back to the host and she said there would be no problem redoing it. A few minutes later the cook came outside to where we were sitting and instead of apologizing he began to instruct me as to how to order poached eggs noting that I should have ordered then poached easy!! I replied that no, I just wanted them "poached" and he began to admonish me as to how I was wrong. Like I've only ordered eggs poached a few hundred times and 99.9% of the time they are exactly right. He walked away looking back at me like I was really being an ass about it. Always consistent food, always great, always busy. Its definitely got a funky charm to it. Have a member of your party grab a table while you order - even if its dirty, otherwise you'll be eating standing up. Really good food for very reasonable prices. Bring cash because as far as I know they don't take credit. Killer french toast, really good salmon and eggs, potatoes that are rockin. Petaluma is a place with many options for a good breakfast, but this tucked away cafe should *not* be overlooked. The lattes are abundant, perfectly frothed, and served in large bowls rather than little mugs. I ate the avocado omelet and the buttermilk pancakes with apple cinnamon, and both were different varieties of perfection. The service is friendly and nice to talk to, the atmosphere is relaxed. Just moved to Petaluma and this place came highly recommended. Sundays they have eggs benedict, delicious! Cash only though and it's kind of annoying to have to stand around waiting for a table (no rsvps or 'list' of any sort.. hawk out your table and stare down the patrons). This is very charming place to have brunch or lunch. They offer both sidewalk and indoor seating - the inside is cozy and artful and outside is east-facing so you can enjoy the sun throughout all of their business hours. The food is well priced and high- quality. I love that I can eat there with anyone - though small and hand crafted, their menu offers something for everyone; vegans, vegetarians, lean protein/diet types and those of us who like rich, cheesy, bacon-ey mouthfeel. The staff is cool enough to feel like a cafe but nice enough to answer questions. So long as you have cash, you will certainly enjoy your visit. read more

I was in Petaluma visiting a friend, and decided to drop by the Tea Room Cafe upon her recommendation. It has a cozy environment, a mix of vintage and modern. Seating is not all that strange, at least not by Bay Area standards. You place your order at the counter, get an order number, find a seat, and wait for your food to be served. The only potential for chaos is if it's busy and the tables don't turn over fast enough. I was there shortly after twelve noon on a weekday, and there was plenty of seating from which to choose. The menu selection is good, with enough options to pique interest but not so many as to burden the diner. I ordered a soup and salad. Both were generous in size, and I barely made a dent in my salad and had to take the rest home! The coffee is OK. It's certainly not bad, but it's not the reason to return to this place. I was intrigued by the mention of afternoon tea on the sandwich board outside the cafe. I was thinking they served High Tea, but upon asking the server I realized that they don't. Too bad, because it can be a nice and rare treat. Overall, the food was tasty, but not extraordinary. The average diner seems to be 60+ in age, but that may be because I went on a weekday at noon. I didn't find the service to be particularly unfriendly, though it wasn't as quaint as I had imagined a small town eatery to be. I was disappointed to hear of other Yelpers' bad experiences here. It makes me think twice about returning, although if bad management is the problem, this won't be the first or last establishment to be guilty of that crime. If there is any sub-optimal critique, it's that the staff seemed to pay more attention to regulars. Sure, that's a by-product of being geared towards locals, but smart management would know to leave out-of-towners with a welcoming experience. Word of mouth recommendations say and do a lot, hence Yelp. The staff that worked there on my visit were a mix of older women (perhaps one was the owner?) and some twenty-something hipster-esque student types. My order arrived after waiting 10-15 minutes, which I deemed a reasonable waiting time. Perhaps all the horrible customer service incidents arose when the cafe was busy? Not that that's a good excuse, but having worked in customer service, I know that some people don't work well under pressure. read more

I've heard a lot about this place, my daughter and her friends go here a lot. I was soooo looking forward to my breakfast. First when we walked in it was sort of busy, not too bad a couple of tables were open, but I couldn't find the menu? It was behind the close to six foot persons a head of us, so it was hard to read and the print was so small.... When we finally got to the counter to place our orders there was no "hello" no "how are you" no nothing :(. Just a rude guy who was actually looking over our heads not paying attention to us as we ordered my friend had to tell this guy three times what she wanted. He preceded to plop a cup down on the counter and addressed the next customer. I had never been here before so I wasn't sure what the cup was for? After walking to a table I noticed several people with tea pots so my friend and I decided that the cup was for my coffee ( which was wonderful) and her tea must be coming. After waiting quit a long time our food arrived, I got the eggs in a hole. I use to make this for my kids when they were little and thought it would be fun to have them made for me, not so much. The egg was way over done and the bread had a strange bitter taste maybe the cheese they put on it? It was way too DRY. The potatoes were the best I've had in a long long time. My sister and I used to come here every single weekend till the recurring issue of finding a hair led us to stop coming. The last time we had an incident the owner said she was going to comp our breakfast and when we went back she charged us for one plate and then had the audacity to say it could've been the potatoes. I know exactly what a hair looks like and they DONT wear hair nets. Such a shame because their food is good but the service is not and I don't like hairy food. Will not be going back. read more

The food is very high quality, well prepared, fresh and delicious, home-cooked or better. Really can't over-state how exceptional the food is. I am a fan of the pay-then-sit model they employ. I'm not a fan of their policy to only accept cash, but I can live with it. If I had written this review last week, I probably would have given 5 stars. However, my experience there yesterday was enough for me to consider not going back and so I am lowering my rating and hoping that the owner gets a chance to see this review. I have been going here every weekend for months, and have been frequenting this location for over 20 years (through multiple owners and businesses, since it was "The Westside Cafe" in the 90's). I have brought many friends and relatives along because I have so enjoyed the food. But yesterday my wife and I arrived at the Tea Room at 11:55am (on a holiday Monday) with the intention of getting breakfast/brunch. By the time we got to the register it was exactly 12:00 and when we started to order, the fellow working the register informed us that they stop serving breakfast at noon. I looked around and saw everyone was eating breakfast, so I asked if we could still order breakfast and he simply repeated "we stop serving breakfast at noon". I looked at my watch, which still read 12:00, and looked at him again. He was clearly unwavering in his assertion. I wasn't interested in having a sandwich (that's all they serve for lunch) so we were left with no option but to go find somewhere else to eat. It was very clear that we were looking to get breakfast and that we were leaving dissatisfied, but he did not offer anything, just watched us walk away. Look, I get that they stop serving breakfast at noon, I really do. But come on, it's not like at the strike of twelve, suddenly they don't have any more eggs. Hell, you can even order an egg sandwich for lunch, so fine, give me that without the bread! At least show some semblance of interest in serving your loyal customers. Maybe offer some options? Maybe even apologize? Or just tell me what is no longer available. But don't just tell me breakfast is over and leave it at that. I'm not stupid, and I can see everyone around me eating eggs, so if you're telling me breakfast is over, I'm pretty sure it's just a matter of principle at that point, and some employee getting some kind of pleasure in telling a customer "no". I don't know, it just seems to me that there were a lot of things the guy operating the register could have done to try to accommodate or placate us, but he didn't even bother, and that lack of effort really makes me not want to go back. As soon as you treat me like I don't matter to your business I lose interest in patronizing it, and that is exactly how I was made to feel yesterday. We got dressed and drove across town in terribly stormy weather to eat at your restaurant, and you proudly shove this "we stop serving breakfast at noon" assertion at us without any attempt to find a compromise or offer any kind of options? I'm not trying to be entitled; I'm just trying to tell you that this is how you turn happy, tipping, loyal customers into customers of your competition, and that is what leads to the demise of small businesses like this. Given how much I love their food, I'm going to give it another chance, but I really think they made a big mistake turning us away they way they did, and I hope we don't ever encounter that kind of treatment again or it will definitely be the last time. read more

tea room cafe is a clean, casual cafe not too big, not too small that serves an excellent breakfast. it's the kind of place with good lighting that makes you feel like you're in an old house with a large screened porch. you order at the counter, and they bring it to your table. breakfast is typical fare with gourmet touches. i had the french toast, which was a nice combination of crispy edges, tender bread with a little sweetness and hints of cinnamon. they lather it with butter, no syrup necessary. the fruit cup was a light addition, filled with fresh strawberries, apple slices, grapes and some melon. the bf had an omelet with goat cheese and avocado, super creamy and filling but not heavy. you can get fresh squeezed orange juice, and the usual coffee, tea offerings. they also start serving lunch around 11am. the environment is relaxing, and food preparation took about 15 mins. not super fast, but not slow, either. service was friendly. read more
