I used to go to the Team Amvets on Sutherland but they have taken a major turn for the worse by converting to bins, so this Cardiff location has become one of my thrift go-tos. Bonus points for two other good thrift spots that I can hit in the same area. Parking here is a breeze, as there is a nice and spacious lot. Setup is similar to the Sutherland Amvets, and the store is large. Things are sorted by clothing type, not size, so be prepared to spend a good amount of time going through the racks. I have found many gems here, though there is also a good amount of Shein and stained/ripped items. Prices have been creeping higher but it's not as bad as other thrift stores in SD. They do military discount and 50% off on certain color tags daily. Overall this is my go-to thrift store and I look forward to discovering what gems I can find here. read more

Don't call and ask what donations they accept. They will tell you on the phone that they accept certain items , but then tell you the exact opposite after you've driven twenty minutes to drop those items off. Thanks for wasting my time. read more

It can get busy here! I've been coming for many years. They sell so many things from shoes to ski boards lol. Come check them out, you'll find unique items and I'm always surprise at what they have. They occasionally sale brand new items too! Great prices and they have specials everyday from 25-75% off a color tag. read more

I donate to this site very frequently, but today I made a purchase, and I am so disappointed in how they treat people here from the community. The cashier was extremely rude, raising/yelling. I understand their policies, but it is somewhat unnecessary to be unkind. We are a retired military family, and it makes me so sad that individuals are being treated so inconsiderately. read more

This place sucks found something the day before but needed some time to think to buy it because of the absurd price they priced it at. Plus I would not want to return something to a thrift second hand store if I changed my mind. I asked if they do 24 hour holds and that I would come first thing tomorrow to purchase and they told me no. I live super close, so this location is an easier drive for me than the pacific highway location. I always find nice stuff at both locations, but the management and staff at this location are so rude and dislike dealing with the public. My niece wanted to thrift and chose Team Amvets as our destination! They have an array of clothing, furniture, home goods, and more. I walked away with. 99 green pants, and blue docker pants for $4.99. The prices were extremely reasonable, and I loved that everything was color coordinated...only downfall is that it wasn't in order of sizes. Otherwise we had fun thrifting! The parking lot and the store itself are pretty dirty and run down, but the prices are fairly cheap and there is a huge selection. No public restrooms or fitting rooms can make it challenging though. Overall it was fine for thrifting but is in desperate need of a little love. read more

I recently went to drop off a large car full of donations. Probably worth about a resale value to them about $400 or $500. While I was dropping everything off, I was lectured by the Amvets employee who received the goods that I need to do a better job of sorting, my donations. He lectured me that there are YouTube videos that I need to watch on how to sort my donations. He was very upset with me. That shoes were mixed with other things or clothes were mixed with other things and basically was a turd at the end. I finally got frustrated and told him to shut up and do his job, I am a veteran and I do not need to be lectured by an employee that I am giving donations to. I was extremely upset and probably will never donate here again. I will probably donate only to disabled American veterans from now on. read more

I've been here a couple times and things have holes in them and are pretty dirty. Prices usually are pretty good IF it's the right color tag for 50% off that day. Today was super bummed to find they are over pricing things intentionally. A brand new pair of gap jeans with the tag on it. The tag from gap was on sale for $1.97 - I have gotten these good of prices from the outlet store - rarely but I have. So someone gave these to amvets for free and amvets priced them at $9.95. I showed it to an employee behind the register and they said that must be a mistake someone must have just stuck a sticker on it because gap would never sell for that price ... I said yes they would and that is the same sticker the outlets use for their clearance items. There was nothing she was willing to do to drop the price even a little. when you first walk in it does smell a little weird. big parking lot. i bought pants for $7 not a super good deal still kind of expensive for a thrift store, a lot better than goodwill though. the clothes are mixed in sizes so it is hard to shop and if you do go through the clothes it will take awhile. read more

I really love all the stuff I find every time I go to this thrift store the only problem is the shift or manager of this store. Countless times she has been rude to me and my peers. My friend gives her life to the military and we go, find some items and at checkout this women denies the military discount because her id was expired. I find this very rude and disrespectful serving member but we did not argue with her. The next time I go this SAME WOMEN who is ringing people up. I have her ring me up and I get some glass and she shuffles them into bags with no regard whether they break. Interrupts the transaction cuts me off and leaves without ringing up my peer. SO RUDE. And then we go to another associate and she actually gives us paper to wrap the glass and is so nice. I've shopped here for years, never had any problems. Then today I was shopping for my boys and a random guy comes up to me telling me I'm banned from the store and takes my picture with his phone. Apparently my mask was not covering my nose. He was so rude to me I had no idea who this complete stranger was yelling at me for no good reason. I covered my nose but that wasn't good enough for him or any employee their at the time. They seem to have to take orders from this random guy whom you can see has no employee badge or anything to identify himself with.....very bad customer service at the very least, very sickening to think he took pictures of me as well. Last weekend my mom was in your store. I believe it was Saturday that Your Store manager May accused my mother of stealing jewelry. She gets mistreated by her. She used to be that she follow her around the store but that didn't stop her from shopping. The biggest issue here is my mother was looking at rings with other customers around. The manager helped her and walked away for a minute to help another customer. She put the jewelry back and continued to go shopping. Your manager ran to my mom accusing her of taking a ring that she placed back on the tray. My mom went back to show her it was there. Accusing someone of stealing is something no manager should do especially if she didn't see it with her own eyes. The ring she accused her of stealing was in fact in the shelf. She embarrassed my mother in front of other customers and that is uncalled for! My mother deserves an apology and that manager needs to be disciplined for her action. An old worn out and ugly calvin klein puffer jacket being sold for $50 when it is only $70 brand new at macys. Honestly, what is wrong with you guys for up-charging old, worn out clothes for so much? She over charged me on things that were supposed to be on sale, double charged and messed up price tags and then I checked everything when I got home and seen how much damage she caused and it was a lot but once you leave the store they dont fix their mistakes and are very rude on the phone! Amvets is my favorite thrift store in San Diego. It's a serious thrift store, not one of your crazy overpriced vintage establishments. They have a ton of clothes, all neatly arranged by color. I would prefer it if they were arranged by size, but any classification at all is appreciated. They have gotten a little pricier in the past few years, but that's the economy for you. I especially like their selection of uniforms. In the past I've bought all sorts of military pants and jackets, doctor's scrubs (some with authentic blood stains), a UPS uniform, and even an neat set of yellow fisherman's rubbers that I loved but never wore. Amvets also has an huge selection of funny and random t-shirts. I once found a shirt that said "Dave Cummings Adult Films" on it (some of you know who I'm talkin' about). I later met the man himself at an adult convention I went to because of Boyfriend's job. Dave was actually wearing the same shirt in a different color. I told him I had it too and he told me that only the crew on his films had that shirt. Awesome. It's also particularly fun for me 'cause that's the store that my parents donate all our old clothes and stuff to. So I'll often see something that belonged to us on their shelves. Once, years ago during the baby-doll t-shirt days, I even purchased an old soccer shirt that had belonged to my kid brother. Three stars because you're not going to find any serious fashion at Amvets, but you can find some useful and fun everyday clothes. read more

It is said that ones man's trash is another's treasure, and that's what I found at this location. I had landed a job cleaning up the city and needed work clothes. I couldn't see paying top dollar for jeans that would take a beating daily. Well, at AmVets I found jeans in mint new condition! Levi Strauss jeans valued at $60 easily for only $11! I made out like a bandit. I ended up finding all sorts of neat stuff too. By shopping here I not only walked away completely satisfied, but helped give to a good cause I believe in. The manager of this establishment really needs a training course on how to speak and deal with customers. If she was an employee of mine she would no longer be employed by my company. Purchased an item, paid cash in full, went to pick up the item only to find out it is broken. It wasn't broken when we first looked at it before purchasing it. First refused to give cash back but only store credit. Remind you we hadn't even taken the item out of the store yet. Eventually she gave our cash back but not before being extremely rude and nasty. I am a big thrifter & have been coming here for years now. I usually come on weekends which is when they have most items with an extra discounted price. You can find some great deals here but it does take some searching through racks and racks of clothes. i would recommend coming in the morning hours because the place is a total disaster in the afternoon clothes are everywhere & kids are running and screaming through the whole store!
