It's nice to be able to customize sugar and ice levels, but that's pretty standard among boba shops these days. The milk tea itself has too much milk for the tea flavor to come through. The boba has great texture but is too sweet. So I'd definitely recommend less than 100% sweetness in your milk tea. This place is massive and decor super cute. I can see this being a great spot to hang out or (pretend to) do work on campus. Super disappointed. Our first time visiting we were very excited. I checked the website out first to make sure they would be open and that they had what we wanted. As we walk towards the entrance we noticed the signs that said call in or order online ONLY. No greeting no offer of assistance for my obvious difficulties and no customer service at all not even a glance. As we returned in 12 minutes to pick up the order was but very much not made as we ordered. Stopped in here with my girlfriend after walking around the university. The interior design is really nice, and the furniture is both interesting and comfortable, a rare combination. They use really good products in their drinks, and it shows in the final result. I ordered the hot mango green tea with boba, my usual drink at this type of place, at 25% sweetness. I'm used to a boba place that makes their drinks really sweet, so I usually cut back. Probably a mistake because this place uses less sweetener than my usual place, so I would have preferred it sweeter. User error, there. But the tea was really tasty and properly brewed. My girlfriend ordered an iced mango milk tea (all their milk teas are made with black tea) at regular sweetness. That was really good, and I wish I had ordered that, to some extent. The boba is soaked in honey, so it has that flavor added, but it was pretty good. The Fresh Plum w/ Lake Michigan is totally different from what I expected from the online picture, and the flavor is not plum at all, and the bubbles are too hard to chew. I strongly doubt the quality of their bubbles. The Hazelnut Milk Tea does not taste well either. It's very plain and the hazelnut flavor is too sweet and not smooth. I would give the tea a 7.5/10 (I ordered the oolong milk tea). While there was a little too much milk that I would have liked, the oolong flavor was definitely there and it was clear that everything was made from scratch. My friends who are regulars say that the boba is usually very good, however today the boba today was subpar - it was extremely tough and not as chewy. The service, ambiance, and tea itself were great, and I would otherwise leave 4/5 stars if not for one factor: price. Now I understand that ingredients are all organically sourced, and that there is a premium needed to be paid for it. However, for me to pay $7.17 for a large boba drink, it better be some of the best boba in the world; this place, while above average, would probably not last a week at its current price point if an average place like Kung Fu Tea opened next door. To further compare, the chain Boba Guys also sources organic ingredients, pays its employees well above market rate, and is located in the most expensive real estate in the US (SF, NYC, and LA). Even their tea is marginally less expensive while being superior in quality. This can only lead me to one conclusion: the pricing here is clearly exploiting the lack of competition and high demand in the University of Chicago vicinity to charge prices way higher than they should - and that is a deal breaker for me. Unbelievable new place! Great quality black green and oolong tea and homemade syrup made without corn syrup!
