I went to Japan recently. I want to start there because the Japan trip is directly relevant to this review in a way that will become clear shortly and also in a way that is deeply embarrassing and I have made peace with both of those things simultaneously. Japan was extraordinary. The food was extraordinary. The trains were extraordinary. The trains specifically deserve their own paragraph because I have never in my life encountered a public transportation system that operates with the precision and quiet dignity of the Japanese rail network. Trains that arrive at the exact second they are supposed to arrive. Trains that leave at the exact second they are supposed to leave. A whole society of people moving through stations the size of small cities with calm purpose and zero visible distress, consulting their phones, reading books, buying things from vending machines that should not logically exist inside a train station but do because Japan has decided that convenience is a human right and I agree completely. I tell you all of this to explain what happened at the train station when we tried to find pizza. Now I know what you are thinking. You went to Japan and you tried to find pizza. And yes. Yes we did. We had been eating spectacular Japanese food for several days running, food that made us question every culinary decision we had made in our entire lives up to that point, and then something happened in the group dynamic that can only be explained as a collective temporary insanity and somebody said what about pizza and instead of saying no we are in Japan and there is yakitori available within forty feet of us at all times, everybody said yeah okay pizza sounds good actually. The station we were in had approximately forty seven exits. I counted. Not all of them. I counted forty seven before I gave up counting and simply accepted that exits were infinite and directional signage was a suggestion. We had been told the pizza place was near exit B14. There was no exit B14. There was a B4 and a B41 and something that might have been B14 but was labeled in a way that required a level of kanji literacy I had not developed in the forty eight hours since landing. We walked for twenty two minutes. We passed the same Family Mart three times which I know because the same employee was stocking the same shelf each time and by the third pass he looked at us with an expression of gentle recognition and what I can only describe as compassionate pity. We never found the pizza place. We found a ramen shop instead and ate the best bowl of ramen of our collective lives and agreed to never speak of the pizza incident again except that I am speaking of it right now because it is directly relevant to the fact that when I came back to Dallas and needed Japanese food that did not require navigating a forty seven exit train station, I went to Tei Tei Robata Bar on Henderson Avenue and everything was immediately right with the world. Tei Tei has been on Henderson Avenue since the late nineties. Founder Teiichi Sakurai, who is also the man behind Tei An which if you have not been to Tei An please go immediately after reading this review and before doing anything else in your life, has been a James Beard semifinalist six times which is the kind of number that should be printed somewhere more prominently than it currently is, like on a highway billboard or possibly the side of a building. You walk in through a Japanese garden to get to the entrance. A Japanese garden. In Dallas. On Henderson Avenue. Between a taco place and a bar with a patio. I walked through it after the forty seven exit train station and my blood pressure dropped twelve points immediately and I have no medical evidence for this but I am confident it is true. Robata is the traditional Northern Japanese grill style. Wood charcoal. Low heat. Slow intention. Things arrive on skewers that have been coaxed rather than forced into deliciousness. The miso sea bass is the kind of dish that people describe by going quiet for a moment first. The cornflake shrimp is a thing that should not work as a concept and works completely as a reality. The daily special comes out in three parts, raw, robata, and more, and each part is a small argument for why you should be paying better attention to what you eat every day of your life. The sashimi sits in a case on ice near the kitchen and you can watch the chefs working with a calm precision that is genuinely meditative to observe, like a train system that runs on the exact second it is supposed to run, quiet and intentional and doing exactly what it is supposed to do without any drama about it. I sat at the sushi bar and ate things I will not fully describe because some experiences should be discovered and not spoiled. I thought about the ramen we found instead of the pizza we were looking for and decided that getting lost is sometimes the whole point. read more

We had an amazing diner at Tei Tei Robata Bar reminding us of our trip to Tokyo. Their robâta grilling specialties are so authentic. Fresh yellowtail carpaccio was delightful. The Chilean sea bass was outstanding. Loved the croquettes. The grilled sausages were a little too German for my taste. Their sushi Toro Diners demonstrated that this Japanese restaurant serves up authentic sushi, including their beautiful octopus Carpaccio. It also does not help that the menu did not have any labels on common allergens. Aside from the below, the sushi and sashimi were really fresh and high quality and our waiter was overall very nice and patient with our large party. I would not come here again with anyone with true allergy though - I notified the restaurant of gluten allergy in someone in the party at the time of reservation and notified our waiter the night of as well. However, when one of the dishes were brought out, it had an ingredient that may have been cross contaminated (regular wasabi) and my friend was not notified of this before taking a bite. This required her to preemptively take an allergy medication to try to mitigate the reaction. I ordered the crab and mushroom rice soup for my daughter who has an egg allergy. I did not realize that this dish contained egg as it was not included in the description. When I apologized and asked whether I can have it made without an egg, I was told that this is how the dish is made and not given any option.. For a restaurant of this caliber, I expected more attention to detail especially pertaining to dietary restrictions. Tei Tei is hands down one of my favorite sushi and robata spots in the city. The robata selections are equally impressive and really round out the menu with warm, smoky bites that contrast perfectly with the raw offerings. If I had one wish for Tei Tei, it would be to add handrolls to the menu--especially a snow crab hand roll. That would send this place into another stratosphere of perfection. Let me start by saying I cannot recommend this place enough. Amazing staff, awesome food, and an overall amazing experience. This place is a 10/10. I was stranded in Dallas trying to get back to Houston from on a 16 hour delayed and canceled flight from Europe, and Tei Tei and their amazing staff literally made my day. We called ahead to ask if they could accommodate the luggage we were stuck with, and they didn't second guess it. We uber there and they immediately grab our luggage and move tables to make room near us. Our server, Denis I believe recommended some awesome dishes. We got a lot but the eel bowl, the cornflake fried chicken, and the Negi toro roll were standouts. They checked on us often and their hospitality was really uplifting in the nightmare of a day that we had. All of this and the pricing is also very reasonable for the quality. After the amazing food and some necessary drinks, I left my sunglasses and hat on the table. Tei Tei instantly responded (even when closed) on their Instagram and shipped my items to Houston. Again with zero hesitation and with the upmost professionalism. In a world where customer service and quality dining is waning. Tei Tei is a shining example of absolutely everything a restaurant should be. I will eat her every single time I visit Dallas! read more

Japanese hospitality and quality service at one of its finest in Dallas. My interaction with the hostess already left me with a positive impression. I was running past the ten minute grace period to hold my reservation. Once the hostess received my text via OpenTable, she informed me they would happily hold my reservation. Parking is a little difficult as there aren't many free options conveniently nearby. Self paid parking lot is right next to the valet. Flat rate of $18 for 3 hours. Tei Tei honored my seating request in front the seafood display on ice. Our server, Tiffany, was very courteous and informative of the menu and was able to help us decide on what to order. I'd like to highlight: the Yuzu Pepper Cured Pork Jowl as it carried a tangy flavor and tender texture; the octopus carpaccio was refreshingly smooth balance to the grilled meat; the sautéed scallop were small but packed a burst of sweetness from the sea. All the staff took turns taking care of our party which was much appreciated. I asked for some grated radish for my tempura and Sakamoto san kindly handed it to me over the sushi bar. Eric R.'s parents treated us to a delicious meal here the night before my birthday. I made reservations a few weeks in advance since I have waited years to eat here. Tei-An is one of my favorite restaurants of all time, so I knew its sister would be just as amazing. Our server Zoe was very kind and helpful throughout the meal. I ordered Asahi on draft, Eric R. got hot green tea, and his mom ordered unfiltered nigori sake (she wanted sweet sake, but did not end up liking the idea of "milky sweet"). I tasted the sake and thought it was nice and smooth. His parents started with fried oysters, and Eric R. and I got the baby yellowtail carpaccio. We shared assorted vegetable tempura next, which had purple sweet potato, green beans, maitake mushrooms, and shishito peppers. Next we had the beef on hot rock where we each cooked slices of beef. That was fun and interactive. I ordered the octopus leg robata imagining it would be on a stick like we had in Japan, but it was actually sliced very thinly and served with yuzu kosho. I liked this a lot because the slices were tender and easy to chew but had a strong grilled flavor. I had never had octopus prepared like this before. Eric R. and his parents shared the baby back ribs since I do not eat pork. They seemed very tender. I ordered the yaki onigiri with yuzu kosho and shared that with Eric R. and his mom. It was a flavorful grilled rice ball with yuzu kosho served with daikon and cucumber pickles topped with bonito flakes. Our sushi course came last. I enjoyed Hokkaido uni gunkan and Spanish mackerel nigiri. Eric R. and his mom had Hokkaido scallop nigiri. We shared three rolls: negi toro maki, spicy tuna maki, and rainbow roll with real crab. Smoky, soft eel meat with very few bones, if any. The best value is still the beef curry, which I'll get every time I'm here. We were able to get a reservation at the bar where the chefs were able to give us the dishes on the spot. Every table has a hour and 45-minute time limit but dishes came out at a decent time. They do let you know that the robata dishes take the longest so they should be ordered first. Our favorite dishes includes the wagyu on the rock, pork jowl, and cornflake shrimp tempura. They were mouthwatering! On the other hand, the sushi and sashimi were not as good as we thought. For me, there was too much rice especially for the fresh eel. I bit into a few fish bones from the eel and bluefin tuna nigiri. Other than the sushi menu, I would highly recommend their hot menu items. Valet parking was available when we left the restaurant but we didn't need it since we had early dinner. There are plenty of parking in the back of the restaurant. Came here while in town for business. This place is legit! If you're wanting authentic Japanese food, this is the place to be. Was pretty hungry! Ordered the Baby Yellowtail Hamachi, Washu Beef, Chicken Karaage, Chilean Sea Bass, and Kurobuta Sausages. We sat at the sushi bar and enjoyed watching both the robata grill and sushi being prepared- dinner and a show! They have a lot of daily specials on top of the regular menu. We ordered a few different items as well as a bottle of Sake. Presentation of the items was well done and I especially enjoyed how the sake came in a little box with ice. Everything we ordered was delicious but the Octopus was a little too chewy for me. Highlights were the sushi rolls- one of the best spicy tuna rolls I have had in Dallas. Came here on a Sunday night with some friends. We were quickly seated and looked through the menu. We ordered the shishito peppers, the cornflake crusted shrimp, the beef curry, Rainbow roll, Tuna roll, California roll, and tempura roll. The service was very quick and our meals were brought out promptly. The standout dish for me was the Rainbow Roll. The fish tasted fresh and the flavors in the crab and avocado filling were absolutely scrumptious. The tuna roll was simple and delicious. The beef curry, as many have mentioned, is also a great hit. I was excited to try the cornflake shrimp. Although the crust was perfectly fried and crunchy, the breading overtook the shrimp and the natural sweetness of the shrimp was lost. The remaining dishes were standard and tasted good. Overall, I had a good experience. It was a tasty meal and I'd come back to try more of their robata dishes. read more

Tei tei is our home away from home. We are always greeted with warmth by Ryoko, Dylan, and Yonni. It is rare to visit a restaurant these days and be greeted by the same wonderful smiling faces every time--Tei Tei is one of those rare gems. The food is always impeccable. Our all time favorites: Karaage, Cornflake Shrimp, Hot Rock Beef, Asian Greens, Enoki and Seabass, Snow Crab California Roll, Spider Roll, Kurobota Sausages, Yuzu Pepper Rice Ball, Yuzu Pepper Pork Jowl and ALWAYS something off the robata, such as a fish collar. Ambience - 4/5: Both the exterior, traditional garden path leading to the door, and the interior, are exquisite. The open kitchen, from which wafts the smoky smell of the robata grill's charcoal, really adds to the experience. While the front of house was immaculate, however, the toilet in the men's restroom was quite literally loose and wobbly. Very strange. I'm told the women's restroom was much nicer. Service - 3/5: Definitely got the full "gaijin" treatment here. Tei Tei seems to be used to catering to people who haven't a clue about Japanese food, which can be good or bad depending on your background. For me, introducing relatively standard sushi fish detracts, rather than adds, to the experience. For others, that might be considered excellent service. Adding to the awkwardness is that Tei Tei does not seem to have a good way to get dishes from the kitchen out to the customers. One of the chefs was constantly having to lean over the gorgeous iced seafood display to hand off plates, which were then awkwardly intercepted by the servers. As someone who is used to the simplicity (and intimacy) of being handed plates by the sushi chef when sitting at the bar, this made for a notably odd experience. Food - 3/5: Some of the dishes here were notably better than others. One was truly bad, and a few dishes were outstanding. Details follows: Nigiri, Sashimi & Carpaccio - 2/5: While all of the fish was good (we had two samplers as well as some additional nigiri), I would say none of it was truly excellent, even when compared to other sushi places in the landlocked mountain and southwest regions. Unfortunately, at the very premium price point Tei Tei operates at, "good" is not good enough. I would outright skip the nigiri, sashimi and carpaccio here. If you must get sushi here, I would suggest the bluefin tuna chutoro. Grilled Artichoke - 5/5: A stand-out must-get winner. I've never been fond of artichoke hearts, and so never tried to eat the leaves roasted. However, the smoky flavor imparted by the robata grill combined with the wasabi-hollandaise dipping sauce was a combination to behold. If every dish here was on this level, this would be an easy five-star review. Grilled Sea Bass - 4.5/5: Also excellent. Some of the best sea bass I've had, but a bit of a small portion. Corn-Flake Tempura Shrimp - 1/5: Edible, but not enjoyable. The residue from the batter left an oily taste in my mouth. Inexcusable at this price point. Sake Ice Cream - 5/5: Exquisite. Think a nigori sake but very, very heavily concentrated. A bit strong on its own, but when combined with the frozen fruit and pirouette it is served with, a delightful combination. A must-get. At a lower price point, I would have been a bit more forgiving. However, Tei-Tei charges rather high end fine dining prices, and so those are the standards to which it should be held. While some aspects of the restaurant, truly did meet those standards, others fell far short. Regrettable. read more

Updating my review, because I (reluctantly) returned for a visit because my sister really wanted us to bring our parents there, and the server acknowledged my last experience (which is really all I wanted) and gave us a small gift certificate for a future visit. My parents, my sister, and I had a nice meal this time. Our server Zoe took good care of us. As usual, we mostly ordered robata items. We did also get some edamame, shishito peppers, and the cornflake crusted shrimp. My mom loved the shrimp so much and kept eating the cornflakes because she enjoyed the crunch. I had to tell her to stop so that she doesn't get too full before the robata items arrive. For robata, we ordered: - Whole black snapper - Whole branzino - Salmon collar - Whole squid - Grilled rice ball - Grilled rice ball with yuzu pepper - Sweet potato Everyone enjoyed everything. I personally preferred the branzino over the snapper, but I was glad to try both. The salmon collar was fantastic and was super meaty. The squid is always delicious and I love that they serve it with the "dipping sauce." The rice balls are always consistent. My mom did complain that it was salty, but I like the saltiness. I think it would be too bland otherwise. Lastly, the sweet potato is always a nice touch. It took quite a while to come out this visit. During a prior visit, it was one of the first items to come out, so I had to check with Zoe to see if it was forgotten. Sequence-wise, I think I prefer having the sweet potato at the end, so that it serves as a dessert. I was really glad that my parents enjoyed the food, and I did appreciate the acknowledgement that my prior visit was less-than-ideal. One thing that was kind of weird was that they gave me a gift certificate to be used later but it could not be used on this most recent visit. It simultaneously felt like an acknowledgment/apology and also a way to get me to come back again later. I mean, I will probably return at some point, so it's not a big deal, but it was interesting. read more

I don't know why it took us so long to re-visit Tei Tei. I frickin' love this place!! Tei Tei was where my bf and I had our first date and we loved everything but shy'd away from going back because for some reason, we always thought it was expensive? We did spend a lil over $200 for 2 people on our first date so when I decided to take my bf for his bday dinner, I expected to spend that much but our bill was less than $200 (tip included!) Drinks: - For me: a glass of Prosecco - For him: he got this refreshing cucumber/lime(?) drink. We were hesitant on ordering it because the description (it had compared it to a lemon drop. And I hate lemon drop coz it's too sweet), but this drink was the opposite of that! I actually liked it a lot Apps: - Cornflake shrimp tempura: my absolute fav. The texture! The flavor! The presentation! *chefs kiss* - Frog leg karaage: I liked it before.. but while I was eating it, I randomly thought about.. frogs. Lol. I hate *live* frogs, so thinking about it threw me off. My bf enjoyed it tho - Salmon sashimi: super fresh! I was tempted to order another but I was pretty full - Tomato prosciutto: just something simple, nothing too special but I did like the combination of.. the sweetness of the tomato with the saltiness of the prosciutto - Quail yakitori: okay, our mistake coz for some reason we were expecting quail EGGS. Not a big fan of this one. Tasted a bit bland? Entree: - Beef tongue curry: I mean, if you're going to Tei Tei.. this is a MUST. The beef tongue is so tender and it's such a flavorful dish. There is a bit of spice to it, and I usually can't handle spicy food but this dish had the perfect amount of spice - Sushi: Ikura, uni, amaebi (comes with fried shrimp heads), super negi toro (I can't remember the full name). The negi toro.. oh my goodness. I'll be thinking about that for awhile. But they were all fresh and tasty! Dessert: - Strawberry panna cotta: didn't feel like we had a lot of options for some reason, but I loved this one. Maybe get 2? Coz I could have eaten the whole thing by myself. I didn't care for the grapes on it though. It was almost a bit out of place. Kiwi & just strawberry slices would have been nice Ambiance: try to get a seat at the sushi bar to watch the sushi chefs in action! I forgot how much I loved their sushi bar (we sat at a table by the sushi bar but I liked how close we were to it). We went on a Sunday night around 6:30PM and we really enjoyed the vibe of the restaurant. Music at the perfect volume, not overly loud, other patrons being respectful of each other.. just nice & cozy Service: we didn't interact too much with our server too much but she was attentive and nice! Parking: complimentary parking available in the back of the restaurant. Otherwise, street parking may be available on non-busy nights *random tip: ladies, use the ladies' room and try out their toilet if you haven't. It's life changing. Bf said they didn't have the fancy toilet in the mens' restroom tho *if I had to ask for one change: I wish the walkway to the restaurant was better lit. So they require reservations due to Covid situation and I was able to book for 6PM. They allow a 1 1/2 hour time per reservation and I was a bit worried I would be rushed. However, every order came out in a timely manner and we were finished with our dinner in an hour! What a successful sushi night! Tonight was a special day so I wanted everything to be perfect but this restaurant surely met my expectations. Sushi & sashimi were both very fresh and once it reached my mouth, it melted away. I ordered the feed me roll which is a chef's choice of a special roll and I was hesitant to order it at first but boy was I glad I did because it was super delicious!! It had a taste I haven't experienced at other sushi restaurants and it was interesting . The cornflake shrimp was perfectly crunchy and the sauce it came with had a nice mixture of sweetness and spiciness. And the wagyu on the rock is just pure perfection. THE BEST EVER! Lastly, I had an Asahi draft to go with my meals and it was an excellent match! The overall customer service was good and the servers were kind to answer any questions I had. Even when the restaurant filled up and became busy, the servers checked up on us frequently. Just as nice the quality of the food is, the pricing can be high but every penny was worth it and I will definitely be coming back!! And one more thing to add, I love the outdoor of the restaurant and how forest-like vibe it gives you. It's been years since I've been to Tei Tei but we made a last minute late reservation a few Fridays ago. Valet is required. Has a nice warm and intimate ambiance. We ordered washu beef & potato croquettes, cornflake crusted shrimp, chef's special roll, yellowtail nigiri, and salmon nigiri. The croquettes were crispy on the outside but a bit too mushy inside. Bigger chunks of beef would've made it better. The cornflake shrimp was a healthy portion of 6 sticks. I really liked the crunchiness and the dipping sauce. The shrimp was a little fishy. The nigiri and rolls were delicious and fresh. Lots of things on the menu so I think I will come back to try more. read more

Amazing sushi spot! I've been here a number of times, date night, large group of friends, etc and it's always been excellent. Service and quality of the sushi! One of my favorite is the seating by the bar area, it's romantic and intimate for a date. We ordered a sushi spread and some apps to share. Love the baby back ribs, yellowtail app, shumai dumplings, and Chilean sea bass. Highly recommend ordering from their daily specials menu. Always fresh, and the best quality! read more

Notes: (1) Non bar seats require reservations a few weeks/months ahead (2) Street parking which can be challenging. Came here with a party of three to sit at the bar as you needed reservations way ahead of time. The restaurant itself is very well decorated and clean. I got the sashimi special platter and it was absolutely delicious! Unlike other places, these were not thin pieces and totally worth the experience. I also got the sea urchin and Wagyu beef on the rock (you cook the piece the meat yourself on top of a hot rock). Surprisingly, the beef cooked quick - 7 to 10 seconds and it was very flavorful. They also have a wide selection of Japanese alcohol beverages. It's definitely worth trying this place! read more
