My wife is Japanese and we're always hunting for places that make us feel like we're back in Japan. They nailed that here. I was a little disappointed in their Japanese Single Malt and Draft beer selection, only because those things are harder to come by in Texas and I was hopeful to find them here. I wish so badly I could give Tei Tei 5 stars, but the poor service was disappointing. The food is absolutely amazing and is easily one of the best places I've had sushi and robata in Dallas. Tried the yellowtail carpaccio, octopus suction cups, assorted sashimi, chef's choice roll, pork jowl, and the whole branzino. The raw items were insanely fresh and melted in your mouth. The branzino was super tasty, not needing any extra sauces or seasonings, and great to share. In regards to the service, I booked a reservation for my mom's birthday for a late Sunday night dinner in the semi-private area. One would expect great service for a birthday alone, but also because of the more private nature. Food came out very slow and even after people who were seated after, us which was very frustrating. My dining partner and I were looking for some great sushi and maybe some other dishes, and Tei Tei Robata really delivered. Since we had a long round trip driving, we opted to keep it light on the drinks, but my Cuco Drop (citrus vodka, cold pressed cucumber syrup, Cointreau, Yuzo, lemon, and sea salt) was refreshingly delicious, as was her Peachy Lychee. Moving on to the food, we opted for a few dishes. The 6 piece premium sushi sampler is meant for one, but we just had one bite each and made it an appetizer. The nigiri was sublime, absolutely delicious, especially the toro, which was the single best piece of fish I've had this side of Tokyo. Giant prawn was, well, giant. It was presented bisected, and had a great delicate flavor and texture. Served with a simple lemon wedge, it was really tasty dish. Other than the nigiri, though, the standout of the evening was miso marianated Chilean sea bass, It had a wonderful flavor and a flaky, yet substantial, texture, some of the best cooked fish I've ever eaten. New items we ordered this time were the sashimi special for 2, shishito peppers, Yuzu pepper pork jowl, and A5 Wagyu beef on the rock! If I had to choose, my faves from this visit were the sashimi special, pork jowl, and the A5 Wagyu! I think this was the first time I've had A5 Wagyu beef and it was a heavenly experience lol. We got: - 1/2 dozen kumamoto oysters - Toro and scallop sashimi - Anago sushi - Hot rock washu - Baby yellowtail collar Most of the dishes we ordered were from the Specials menu of the day. My favorites were the sashimi - both the toro and scallop were soooo good! If I had to choose, I'd go with the toro for sure. I also recommend the hot rock washu - the beef is so thinly sliced, and it just melts in your mouth! All that goodness. Service was fantastic - we were seated at the bar, and we got to talk to one of the sushi chefs. The owner of the restaurant was super chill and had a drink with us! We were told we had to wrap up by 9pm, but that was no problem, as we were pretty much done by then anyway. I got the tokio mule cocktail - very refreshing and lovely! This was such a lucky find! We went to a restaurant close by that had a long wait. So we left and ended up here some how. I can't tell you how glad we were that we ended up here for this culinary experience. I feel like pictures of this place do not do it justice because you can't taste the flavors through the viewing of these pictures. They seated us at the sushi bar and there was hand sanitizer waiting for us along with a QR code menu. Very safe and sanitary! For drinks, we ordered the Yuzu Collins and their spin on the Old Fashioned. The Collins was so refreshing (not too sweet but just right) and the old fashioned was definitely stiff but delicious. Ive been here several times and have enjoyed my experience every single time. While everything is not amazing, Im willing to look past some of the missteps for the overall great experience. Here are my notes throughout the times Ive been here. Washu Beef from Robata 5oz - pure pleasure. Expensive but totally worth it. Soft Shell Crab Roll - the crab in it was fantastic. Cocktail - they make damn good cocktails. Honestly anything you order you be enjoyable. Grilled Artichoke I really loved this. Has a great char but isn't burnt to a crisp. Shumai Dumplings not what I expected, but still good. Feels more like a meatball than minced feeling. Chilean Sea Bass - evenly grilled, coated in miso, and buttery to taste. A fantastic choice from the robata. Toro, Mackeral, Uni, Smoked Salmon, Amberjack, tomago sushi is all top notch. You can't go wrong ordering your favorites. The corn flake crusted fried shrimp are to DIE for! Beautifully golden brown corn flakes that brings a seismic earth quake of a crunch. The shrimp itself is super fresh and quite girthy in portion. It's like eating a whole prawn in size! Getting just the half order should be good enough, especially if you plan on ordering 6 other dishes. The pork baby back ribs were pure comfort food. They cook this fall of the bone to ensure you can pack away at the structure with chop sticks. The goy glaze just elevates everything! There were some parts that needed your hands but 90% of that dish could be eaten with just chop sticks. The pork jowls were not as magical as I hoped, but they were still a solid choice. Id say if you ordered multiple things, make sure you try to eat the pork jowl first. It's great when it's hot, but once it becomes lukewarm, its just ok. The surprising winner of this dish is the pepper yuzu paste. Holy crap that's stuff is good! It's got flavor for days! The quail were just ok. They could have had a more smoky, rotated quality, but that's just my preference. The skin also didn't have any crunchiness. Hands down, one of the best Japanese restaurants in the DFW area... and I think I've been to pretty much most of them! You have gotta get the beef tongue on hot rock. Got the recommendation from a fellow yelper and it did not disappoint. My kids even dived into it (which meant less for the hubs and I!) The kids also loved the grilled rice ball. Super crunchy and seasoned on the outside and delicious warm soft rice on the inside. We had the whole grilled fish (ate everything including the cheeks), sauteed mushrooms, lamb chops, and sashimi combination... Wow, hands down wonderful experience. First timers, the rave reviews had me excited but was disappointed in the long wait time and quality for some items... We ordered uni, chutoro, salmon belly nigiris, and 2 soft shell crab handrolls. Also the seared Hokkaido scallops with uni sauce and the house made shu mai dumplings. From the robata selection we did the miso marinated sea bass and whole squid. Felt like we got a good variety of items to really tell how the place was. Sadly it took OVER 30 minutes for us to even get anything to eat. This is pretty long considering we ordered a lot of raw foods. I understand the robata would take some time but that was the first thing that came?? We were sitting at the bar just waiting for what seemed like forever. We flagged down the waiter and asked if we could have something to snack on since we were starving. He gave us some free edamame but that came at the same time as the food.... The house made shumai dumplings were SO disappointing. It was super overcooked in the steamer. The dumpling wrap was falling apart and the filling was really dense. The scallops with uni sauce were too sweet, like they had added sugar or something to the sauce. Not a natural uni sweetness, it was OK. The sweetness of the scallops + overly sweet sauce. Scallops were cooked well. The soft shell crab rolls were tasty! I dont remember the exact name of what I ordered, but it was a very hot stone with pieces of extremely tender thin sliced beef that I could cook my self on the slab. I think it also came with a dipping sauce. This was possibly and appetizer because possibly ordered another one it was SO good! The atmosphere is also very cozy and modern with nice lighting. Just a heads up, its gets VERY crowded and dont know if they take reservations, so be prepared to wait at least a little while -- well worth it. Wait so you're telling me that Tei Tei has been opened for years and nobody ever emphasized to me how amazing and extensive their menu was?! Aaron L. and I were so lucky to score a seat here on a Sunday evening without a reservation. Valet (complimentary, but please tip) was seamless - in the back of the restaurant with The Porch; traveled down the side of the restaurant to the front entrance. We were seated within two minutes right in front of the sushi bar (personal preference: my favorite type of seats next to my arm candy man). Clear view of the daily specials (yes!), generous sake menu, and plenty of regular menu options that make any sushi/izakaya lover swoon. And as for those who regularly read my reviews, you know I go head over heels for tapas! Everything that we ordered was a hit. I was very impressed with the chef sashimi special - extremely fresh fish and the selection provided had much more variety than most others. Best part - bones of the Spanish mackerel are deep fried and brought to you later: edible - bones and everything! Several options from Hokkaido (my absolute fav) - tell me it's an Hokkaido ____ and I'll eat it without hesitation :) If you're really into izakaya, I want to say it's the best location in Dallas that I've tried so far in terms of selection and taste. Its difficult to control yourself from order the entire menu of specials, but hey there's always going to be another time in the future, right? Prices are a bit steep compared to other Japanese restaurants in the area. Unsure of Tei Tei's sake vendor; I was observing a bit of a larger [than the norm] margin for those. We lucked into two seats overlooking the grills and sushi making areas, This was an outstanding, real time way to understand the concept of robata (my first time!). We started out from the raw/fresh list and had the scallops. These might have been the highlight of the night between their perfect texture and natural sweetness. We enjoyed their taste so much we ditched the normal soy or other accompaniments. Next up were the potato croquettes which were huge with a perfect crust on the outside. They were delicious, but I was a little disappointed to find that they were cool in the middle. I believe this was a factor of them being too big to warm thoroughly. For round three, we enjoyed the cornflake crusted shrimp. I honestly didn't know it was possible for shrimp to be that big. They were delicious, with the cornflakes complimenting the briny sweetness of the shrimp. We ended the evening on the robata with the the seabass & enoki. It was light and rich at the same time. Delicious food and a fun dining experience. The sea bass was particularly good. This Omakase offers a good balance between raw and cooked seafood, with the wagyu beef as a nice bonus. While other high end Japanese restaurants can have you leaving still hungry (referring to Uchi), we were both very comfortable after this meal. He takes me to a nice sushi restaurant every year for my birthday and this place was hands down THE BEST! The entry made me feel like Alice in wonderland. We were seated right at the bar so we saw the chef cook all our meals plus other people's meal. We had the beef on stone rocks (one of my favorite from that night), of course sushi and sashimi, shishito peppers were really good (first time trying it).
