I ordered six hamburgers with everything no cheese. These low grade beef Hamburg's was like mystery meet they where made sloppy ketchup and mustard was pouring outside the bun all over the wrapper meat taste bland even the pickles had a weird taste in was standers . When did sliders start coming with one string of caramelize onion and not steamed out of 6 burgers only 3 had one small piece of onion on them and the others had none how do you make old fashion sliders and not put any onions on the burger there burgers if you want to call them that where totally trash and they went into the trash the ones the dog did mot eat not even close to the original Elmer's hamburgers will not stay in business to much longer serving this mess and. Detroit, cursed with a sea of blight despite parts "coming back" is blessed with tough little gems that have survived through thick and thin. The city always has grand plans to revitalize areas but plucky entrepreneurs rely on their guts and wits to keep their businesses going in the outer neighborhoods. These guys should run the city! Slider places are still scattered around Detroit serving their neighborhoods or what's left of them. I've hit most but Elmer's seemed to elude me, until today. With time to kill, and being close to the D. I set off for Elmer's. I took Oakman Blvd which has the most beautiful houses anywhere but then gives way to a pretty desolate area. Crossing Grand River looks more like the set of Omega Man (google it) than 2021 America. An empty mostly abandoned former retail Mecca. One winding block later, Elmer's. Seeming frozen in time the familiar white enamel exterior screams sliders. Like a big MCM fridge this icon holds court 24 hrs a day. I don't know if I'd go during the second 12 hrs of the day but 2 in the afternoon had a friendly steady stream of customers and was totally safe. I ordered 4 cheese burgers, fries and a Faygo! root beer. The wait was long but called in orders seemed to be the culprit and the girls behind the counter moved at their own measured pace. Ok the food. The menu featured a diner type menu. They even sell bags of ice! But I only saw sliders being ordered. Hey when in Rome. The burgers were larger than most sliders as were the cut of the fries. They were fantastic. I topped out at 3 and brought one home for Al H. IV. He concurred. The fries were good but could have been cooked longer. Faygo came with a cup of ice. $11.50 for it all is in line with other places and well worth it. They even take credit cards. I love a good burger. I have been giving thought how to approach this. As I was riding home on the old calorie destroyer, I was writing in my head several different reviews, and nothing seemed to fit. That is, until I remembered one of Janelle's reviews. So, without further adieu, let us do a throwdown of greasy hamburger joints in the D. Elmer's vs The Telway. ---------------------------------- Building: Both are white tiled affairs, a throwback to a simpler time when we all drove cars with strange names and even more bizarre designs. Elmer's has a wall of bulletproof glass separating the cook from the clientele. I'm really not a fan of sitting behind glass since I am a people person. Edge: Telway. Price: Ok, same burgers maybe Elmer's is a tad bigger, but honestly, 1.25 for a slider is a little much. The Telway has a good deal with their 4 for 2.25 while 6 burgers at Elmers will run you 6.30 plus tax. Edge: Telway. Neighborhood Oakman and Chicago isn't the best area in the D, but it's not the worst either. Telway isn't much better, but Michigan Ave has traffic on it. Oakman is so deserted you can ride your bike and not be overly threatened by passing cars. Tie. The Burgers. Elmers burgers are a little juicer than Telway;s are, and they do come with a few more onions well done, and pickles.as well. There isn't a lot of meat on either one, so I'm gonna call this one a tie. I didnt sample the fries or the coffee, but I will in the future, and I do promise to report back. This place has always been a good old fashioned neighborhood burger joint!! Just a small diner, with good food.

Great cheeseburgers come in many different forms. Some places pair short rib and sirloin (ground in-house, of course) with aged gouda, then place the perfectly seared creation on brioche, served with cornichons, heirloom tomatoes, spring mix, and caramelized pink Roscoff onions. Depending on the level of pretentiousness, aioli will be de rigueur. Other places smash ground beef of indeterminate origin onto a screaming hot flat top grill, then top the well-done patties with copious amounts of shredded grilled onions and American cheese. Brioche? Not on your life. Heirloom tomatoes? What have you been smoking? White buns, and no colorful toppings, are the order of the day at slider-style burger places across Metro Detroit, and the subject of this review is no different. While different styles appeal to different folks, Elmer's is there to serve the needs of those hankering for the latter style of cheeseburger, and it delivers. It's not my favorite slider-style burger within the city limits (that honor goes to Sonny's), but it's got what I want. Grilled beef and grilled onions are a match made in heaven, if you'll forgive the cliché, and such a union is made all the more holy with the addition of American cheese. Don't get me wrong; I'm a turophile, or lover of cheese. (Useless factoid for the day: Legendary New York Times food writer Craig Claiborne attributed the introduction of this word to Clifton Fadiman.) So, while perfect ratios of multiple cuts of beef seared to a beautiful rare demand a cheese of corresponding quality, ground chuck (or whatever the hell Elmer's uses) needs nothing more than American cheese. Elmer's cheeseburgers are salty, juicy, and greasy, just as God and nature intended. The French fries were disappointing, as they invariably are at other white-tiled burger joints. I haven't tried anything else on Elmer's menu, and likely never will. But that's okay, because I go to Elmer's for only one thing: very good cheeseburgers. read more

They definitely have the old time look going for it, and everything looks like it's right out of the 1950's, and looks very clean. I ordered 4 cheeseburgers (they are sliders) to go and took them home. The service and cleanliness were all great. However, these are not the normal gut-bombs you would expect from this type of establishment. They are freakin nuclear gut-bombs. I was hunched over in pain about 20 minutes after eating them. I just could not process that much grease all at once. I wish this was a better experience, and it might have been had I had a night of vodka in there to go to battle, but this was just a lunch. I got the slightly larger cheeseburger (there are three sizes of cheeseburger available) and I'll agree with the other review that the regular cheeseburgers are just a little small on the meat side (my buddy got the 6 regular cheeseburgers deal). I love Elmers. Their sliders are the best in the world to me. The burgers do leave a little more meat to be desired, but they are tasty. It's the old grill, and the taste that has been trapped in over the 50+ years, and the onions being grilled on top with the buns. Great sliders, and the coffee is on point as well. I began placing the order and she said ok anything else so I started to add items and her response was "no you cannot you would have to come in and place that order because we don't accept phone orders over $8". Was rolling on the west side and saw this gem of a burger joint and had to stop. I entered at the front and that didn't seem like the place to order. I quickly approached the bullet proof vestibule and paid $3.85 for two small cheeseburgers. Also met a guy named Diante that put me on the phone with DJ Rick Wilhite. We had a good chit chat.
