Lukewarm latte and snitty attitude of self important staff member made an unpleasant experience deterministic: we'll never go back. My brothers visited. One drove over a hundred miles, the other over forty. Both are in their sixties and needed a mid-afternoon boost. We had enough time to get to Tempest before close and buy coffees and sit by the river. We got our order in by 2:45. They close at 3. One brother needed to sit because of the heat. Since it was near time to close we found a seat on the patio on regular chairs in the shade, so the staff could continue pulling in the cushions from other seats and close up. We were told nicely by one woman that they closed in 10 minutes. We acknowledged and said we would go outside and leave soon. As stated the lattes were lukewarm, so we were done in 8 minutes and about to leave, when a young blond came out and yelled in a testy-dare I use the pun-'tempestuous' tone from across the patio, "We are closed. It's time to leave." Remember we are on a patio outside, that only has a gate to walk through to leave, and she still had some clean up work to do. I know, because I saw her as we walked away. Instead of walking all of 15 feet-which she had to do anyway to finish up-to let us know she wanted to lock the gate, she decided to become irritated and express it That was my third and last visit. All three times the lattes were lukewarm and middling, but I thought it was the cold weather before. When the temp is 80 and it's lukewarm, then the barista doesn't know how to make them. This was also a second time near close. The last time it was about 30 minutes before close when I was told the kitchen was closed. I checked there website which states all meals are served "until close". It's a good thing the place has a captive clientele from the corrugated steel complex and hotel. The place is otherwise unpleasant. There is no good seating except the patio all a couple of months a year. Inside has no optimal table to sit. Either you are by the heavily trafficked entry and counter, which is also by the kitchen door and overflowing garbage can, or you are by the toilets. Wedged in between is the ubiquitous couch area of every pretentious yet mediocre coffee shop catering to the uber cool soul surfers. You soon realize that the seating area is 1/3 the size of the kitchen and drink prep area which means they really don't want you there. And when a basic waffle costs $12 it means they don't want to serve you either; they just want your money. My advise is don't go there. read more

Recently stopped in at Tempest with some buddies while visiting the Appleton area. I love my coffee and this place was awesome. From the number of coffee selections (hot and cold), to the pastries and other breakfast options, it will satisfy anyone. We ordered avocado toast, coconut donut, danish, macchiato and Americano. The avocado toast tastes really good. I ordered it with the egg on top but if I didn't it again, id go eggless because it simply didn't need it. My buddy had this waffle and I stole a bite. It was very flavorful and nice and fluffy. Very well done. The pastries were some of the best tasting pastries I've ever had...ever. I'm a huge donut fan, but not big on coconut. With that said, the coconut donut may have been one of the best donuts I've ever had. The coconut tasted fresh, the donut was a cake style but remained light and fluffy. The danish was amazing- flaky, buttery crust. The filling was the perfect amount of sweet. The drinks were well done. The hot drinks tasted nice with the added touch of the heart. The cold brew came in a big jar with a metal straw- first time I've ever had a cold brew with something other than a paper or plastic straw and I really liked this idea. The metal straw was cold so when drinking the cold brew it didn't warm the actual liquid in anyway before hitting your mouth. I'm not sure if Wisconsin requires something other than paper or plastic straws because there was another coffee shop in the area that did the same thing; either way, great idea. If you are around Lawrence University, this is a perfect place to have a cup of joe with friends! read more

Word of mouth spreads fast, and for this reason I am so happy to say I heard good things about Tempest, so I went. And now I will spread more good things about Tempest. The inside is GORGEOUS. I love the wall color, it is very calming. The tile floor is beautiful and CLEAN. I found the employees friendly and upbeat. The latte DELICIOUS. Tho, not very warm, but as read previously they do it that way on purpose to make it creamier or something and all you have to do it ask for it to be hot upon ordering.... i just forgot to do that. The avocado power toast is ridiculously good. That along with the maple french toast kept me full for HOURS AND HOURS. When I first reviewed Tempest, I was relatively new to the coffee scene, so I'm updating my review for my all-time favorite coffee shop, now that I have a better understanding of how Tempest is a truly unique place. In the past couple years of exploring the coffee world, I've tasted coffee in a number of different states from coast to coast. While different cities have consistently offered me good coffee, Tempest has gifted me genuinely great coffee. I've watched first-hand how the baristas at Tempest craft their drinks, down to decimal measurements of precision. Every time I return, there is always something new (and healthy) on the menu to explore. It takes one glance, one smell, and one sip to discern the quality of a cup of coffee, and Tempest knows how to impress. I'm delighted that I discovered Tempest. The baristas and their welcoming environment have warmed my heart while their drinks have warmed my stomach! :) (Also- I love the food menu and the bakery items. Love love love this coffee shop! I wish I would've discovered it sooner. My friend and I stopped in here last weekend and I could've stayed all day. It has a modern vibe and was a little louder than I'm used to for a coffee shop but the service, ambiance, food and coffee was all on point. We both had grilled cheese served with tomato soup which was super tasty. We also got the same drink - the black salt caramel latte which is to die for!!! (Weird combo with grilled cheese...I know). Great new addition at the riverfront. A bit tricky to find but there are signs to follow. The atmosphere is clean and open, great tables for a meeting or comfy chairs if meeting friends. There is a patio for outdoor seating when the weather improves. Beautiful view of the river. The ginger tea was very good, the ricotta lemon muffin was ok, a bit dry. Others in my group enjoyed a variety of drinks and breakfast foods. The menu for breakfast will bring me back to try something else. I will be back for some early morning meetings. read more

Where once I was greeted by name and recommended what single origin coffee I may like to almost like greeted with a grunt? To be fair I've gone to Tempest 4 times thinking what I was experiencing was maybe a glitch? But in the end it's come to this...I would rather drive through (dare I say it?!?!) Seth's bank drive-through or even Starbucks than give this guy another penny of my cash. The staff is rude if not down right dismissive. If you like the attitude "this is the hip place to be and you're welcome we allowed you to pay us" by all means go! I gave them 2 stars because the coffee IS good but the method of delivery is lacking. Sign me up for: Seth's smile AND great coffee or Starbucks ok coffee and the fact they look me in the eye. I've always loved this place (coffee, food, decor, and location), but just came back for the first time in over a year and was disappointed. They were completely out of decaf coffee and had absolutely no bakery items (on a weekend morning at 7:30am (?!)). I've previously always loved their coffee and lattes but my husband was disappointed in his mocha and said there were a lot of bitter chunks of cocoa in it. We expected better for a $5 8oz drink. That said, I've always enjoyed their fruit and granola bowl and it was as good as I'd remembered. We'll be back to give it another shot but I hope their service improves. read more

I had a great first experience at tempest coffee- the atmosphere was extremely cozy and bright, and the staff members were very friendly which is always a plus. The prices were reasonable and both the coffee and food were DELICIOUS, and came out shortly after ordering. My friend and I both ordered iced almond milk lattes with vanilla, as well as a bagel w/ cream cheese and the fluffiest waffles in the world. Had coffee with a friend, this was my first visit here. The staff were friendly and helpful. Everything is fairly priced, the overall atmosphere is quiet and refreshing, plus a great view of the river. The only thing I would recommend is to get a little better signage on the street. Love this place. They have indoor and outdoor seating. It is a more chill place so you do have to pick up your food from the counter and self-serve a bit. The drinks are yummy and unique. This place is not visible from the road or even the adjacent parking lot, but when you do find it, the result is well worth it. Come to think of it, the best view of the place is if you are floating down the Fox River. Nevertheless.......the coffee is excellent. And the Very Berry Muffin.........well, let's just say that if you like blueberry muffins, this one will not disappoint. Very modern decor and scenic view of the Fox River. Needed a spot to get some work done and wanted to try this spot out after reading some Yelp reviews. It's located in the secret underworld area of Appleton that I wasn't familiar with. Under the bridge on of College Ave there a couple of building that consist of businesses on the first floor and then a couple rows of apartment/condos. It's right by the river and a lot of people were biking by or walking their dogs. I didn't know where I was going and parked in the wrong lot, but it wasn't much of a walk to figure out where I was going. The inside of the coffee shop is very trendy and modern. It's very bright with the white walls and natural sunlight from the big glass windows. Lots of tables and chairs, and it was laid out nicely whether you were with a small group or just a friend. The outdoor patio looked unbelievable. It's a perfect spot to relax on a warm day and sit near the river. They have lots of different coffee and espresso drinks. I got my usual Earl Grey tea. One thing they did differently is they steeped the tea and had a timer for it. I had to wait a little longer than usual for a tea...but no big deal. When my stomach started to growl, the Grilled cheese dippers caught my attention. The cashier girl said those were her favorite. It was pretty simple, a grilled cheese with three cheeses, and it was cut up into strips so it was easy to dip into your chipotle sauce. It's easy to use up the chipotle sauce. If you ask, they will get you some more. Only thing that I think should be changed would be the placement of their menus. When you walk in and walk towards the cashier, you're looking for a board with their menu. Instead they have a filing wall hanger around the corner from where you walk in. It's not an obvious spot and I did see the cashier point to where the menus were. Maybe if there were on the other side of the wall so you see it when you walk by. Or maybe have a stand by the cash register. Menu placement shouldn't be your dagger for trying this place out. Come here for the food, coffee, and comforting atmosphere read more

Tempest is a great little spot right off the walking trail. The coffees and lattes have always been great, I've recently tried their ginger drink and cold teas and have also been pleased. We haven't tried any of the food but the beverages are always wonderful. Extra points for being dog friendly and always having water for our pups! read more
