Borderline 4, the atmosphere is great, cocktails are amazing, and the service was good. The food was good, but not up to the overall value for the costs. The paella was pricey for the actual quality and quantity of seafood, chicken, and sausage. Small bits of fish and rice that didn't appear to have been cooked in the actual paella pan missed expectations. The poached pear and barratta salad stood out. It was a great mix of flavors and presented well. I liked the creativity and took a note to try making this at home. Still, it's near Aspen so I guess you can expect some inflation. Last week, my wife & I decided on a last minute 3 day trip to the Roaring Fork valley. We decided on having a nice dinner for one night, and chose Tempranillo based on perusing the menu earlier in the day ant its proximity to where we were staying. My wife went with a chicken dish, and I chose the veal marsala. Unfortunately the mashed potatoes and vegetable sides with both main entrees were cold. The accompanying vegetables could have been taken from a crudite plate - undercooked, and uninspiring. Halfway through. the waiter stopped by, and we mentioned this. To be fair, he did offer two free glasses of wine, which we politely declined since we were well into the meal. Although my wife enjoyed her chicken entree, my veal was bland and nothing special. We were expecting someone from management to stop by, but that never happened. All in all, a disappointing dining experience, especially at this price point. The next time we are in the area, we will make the trip into Aspen, where there are numerous up scale dining choices available. read more

The most mediocre $300 dinner I've ever had. It's been several years since we have been here and I'm not sure what has happened. We went on Saturday night in January and the place was empty. I had the the "special" OssoBuco. The one I get off the shelf at Costco is better. The wife had the "special" paella. Also underwhelming. The cheese and meat board was ok ($35), nothing special. "Would you like bread?" That cost $7. Also, we were sat on the bar side. It was very bright (weird) and we felt like we were under a spotlight. I asked the waiter if that was normal and he responded "no problem, I can adjust". Never happened. Seems like a good place for dinner with a combination of Italian and Spanish menu items. However, execution is the key to success. Located on the main strip of Basalt's business district the location is easy to get to and parking is onsite. The menu has several delightful dishes and a number of nightly specials. We started with a special of grilled octopus which was a very small portion and not bursting with flavor. The Arroz Negro-- Squid Ink Rice with Calamari, Shrimp and Scallops wasn't well prepared and the rice was slightly undercooked and under seasoned. I had the Linguini Fruitti di Mare which was a nice portion of squid ink pasta that tasted fresh and was the star of the dish. The only downside to the dish was the calamari which was overcooked and as they say "chewed like rubber bands". The server was nice when he was available, but we did not like the fact that he reached over our guest to serve the plates rather than walking to the other side of the table. Same was true when pouring our water and he never checked to refill our waters or ask if we would like any additional cocktails or wine. They have outdoor seating on the expansive porch or on tables and couches located on the front lawn. There was one family on the lawn that didn't control their child, so the manager had to tell the child to stop climbing on the restaurants sign and sit back at the table. I'm sure if the child fell or was injured it would be a major issue. Unfortunately I gave the restaurant a modest score and would hope that they can improve on their service and consistency of the dishes. read more

Tempranillo is a lovely place. Located in Old Town Basalt, the restaurant is housed in a historic building that was once the town's railroad hotel. Adding to the charm is its spacious porch and patio that is especially charming in the evenings when the string lights are turned on. The food consists of modern Spanish and Italian cuisine, and the menu is pretty extensive. The kitchen is very accommodating towards dietary restrictions, and there are plenty of gluten-free options. I came for dinner with my boyfriend to celebrate his birthday, and we had the pappardelle mambo, gnocchi, and creme brulee. The food was delicious. The service is a different experience from the food though. Right after getting seated and before we even had a chance to order anything, we witnessed a rude customer and a server engaging in what escalated into a shouting match that resulted in the customer being kicked out. Aside from that, our server was pretty much absent the entire time. He was extremely slow and was hardly seen. It took forever to get our order placed and to get our food. However, the table next to us had the opposite experience. Their server was great, and we found out that there were plenty of specials on the menu thanks to overhearing her explaining them in details to her table. It would have been nice to have been told of the specials since they sounded really tasty, but we had already placed our order. With the location and food, we could have had a great experience. However, the service that we experienced completely shot that down. The service at Tempranillo is not bad. The service experience is a gamble though, and I would rather go to Vegas if I want to gamble and have good food. read more

Came into dinner on a Tuesday evening and it was a good time. Our table of four ordered 4 specials, lobster ravioli, cioppino , rib eye& lobster and the Branzino risotto. As an appetizer the calamari and a 2020 Tempranillo bottle of wine that our server Luka recommended. Thank you to Luka! He was knowledgeable with the menu and wine we were thoroughly impressed. I think he made our dining experience lovely. There was a hiccup with the risotto, it was actually undercooked but they brought us a new one right away. The manager came and made sure we were satisfied. The steak was also cooked a bit more than what we wanted (medium rare) but it came out medium and they ran out of lobster so it was replaced with shrimp. Slightly disappointed but We were okay though still good. The Branzino was cooked perfectly very crispy and the seasoning was well balanced w the risotto. Our favorite was the cioppino, wonderfully with a side of bread to dip. Luka brought out some dessert wine for us and we ended with the tiramisu and French toast dessert. Thank you Luka! The ambiance is nice, get some wine and pair it well with their specials. Would come back next season! read more

Service was good. Ambiance fine since this is off season was not crowded so not too noisy. Food was a big disappointment. Had the Valencia Paella and had asked for some scallops to be added, was told scallops comes in it Well the scallops were very tiny (maybe from a can) and were raw. The chicken was small square pieces that were like cardboard!. Calamari in this dish as well as the tappas dish that we had was very tough I couldn't eat it . A friend recommended this spot for a group dinner. We made reservations for 730pm on a Saturday and glad we did! The food was delicious and the service was great! I got the pear salad which was a special and it was very yummy! My partner got the pork medallion special and it was melt in your mouth delicious. Everyone else said their meals were good as well. The prices are a little high but it's a nice restaurant near Aspen so I didn't think it was too bad. I'd definitely come back again. read more

A blonde bimbo who apparently worked 11 straight days, gave us bad wine, we had to ask what the dinner specials were and she decided to give us her phone to see what she wrote as far as the specials. The music is cranked with 80s music. We had to give her our order twice. I found tinfoil pieces in my vongoli. As a long time local, this place was classy and now this? Tempranillo was good as far as service, apps, pasta and wine but the Pallea left much to be desired. For a spanish restaurant to not make this dish correctly was odd. The thing that seperates average rice from Pallea is the "socarrat" or carmelization of the rice. When my pallea arrived i tried it and noticed that it was missing the beautifully carmelized crust on the bottom so I asked if they could cook it longer. The server told me that they do not do this at this restaurant. This leads me to believe that it is just rice they precook and put in a warm pallea pan for asthetics. read more

We had dinner on the patio of this former railroad hotel that has been repurposed as a restaurant serving Spanish and Italian food. We started off sharing a Mediterranean salad that included organic greens, sundried tomatoes, pine nuts and goat cheese that was lightly dressed with a piquillo vinaigrette. We ordered mejillones a limon, but received clams a la vasca which we accepted without complaint though in hind sight should have been sent back because it was not particularly good. Our savory, paella mariscos was good though almost completely lacking socarrat. We concluded the meal with a chocolate mousse that was desirably light and flavorful. read more

If I could give this review zero stars, I would. We've been to Tempranillo many times over the last 10 years. It's been good and it's been just okay but last night, it was the worst experience we've had in a restaurant in a long time. My wife and I went there to celebrate our 19th anniversary, arriving promptly at 7pm. We got to our corner table in the front room and noticed right away that the table was totally off kilter by at least one inch so that drink glasses would spill for sure. We asked the hostess if something could be done (shove a napkin underneath the short leg, matchbook, etc.) and we were told with a flourish, "And THAT is the way your table will stay! But don't worry, your plates won't fall off!" My wife was dumbfounded. The busboy (wish I'd gotten his name) came over and immediately figured out how to fix the table. He was the ONLY bright moment in a night that proved to be unbearable. We waited nearly 15 minutes for our waitress and I had to get up to finally get someone to come over. We were hungry and wanted to order but menus took yet another 10 minutes and then another 10 minutes before our order was taken. Our waitress seemed disinterested and "chilly" in her attitude toward us or what we wanted. We ordered the traditional Tempranillo salad (which we have loved in the past), tapas and a main course. The salad showed up (again, taking way too long) and looked like it had been thrown together in the dark. The dressing also was "off" with far too much vinegar added. We powered through it because we were hungry and when the busboy came to remove the plates, we mentioned the issue. He was genuinely sorry and said he'd mention it to the chef. [Our salads were later comp'd.] As it took a ridiculous amount of time to get our main course and tapas, we had plenty of time to gaze around the place. The ceiling lights and coverings are COVERED in dust and debris that has blown into the place. The music (if you want to call it music) was so damn loud and overpowering, it became hard to block out. Another party of four was seated two tables away from us and from what my wife said, the woman at the table was some "well known person" or "actress". I didn't know who she was but our waitress seemed to know. I noted that our waitress was jovial, talkative and totally "there" for that table throughout the night. This was the complete opposite of how she would approach and treat us the entire night. I had to get up TWICE to ask where our food was and to remind staff how long we'd been waiting. I am NOT a "difficult" person but I was made to feel difficult by my honest requests. It's a horrible way to be treated when all you are doing is trying to get assistance. The tapas were mediocre and the main course was okay but nothing special. During our meal, it sounded as if someone turned the "music" up about five notches and it became truly unbearable and hard to talk over. After finishing our meal, our plates sat on the table for another 15 minutes before being removed. We waited for our waitress for the dessert menus but she was far too busy taking care of the other "more important" table. So I had to get up again and ask for the dessert menu. Got the menu finally. My wife loves Tiramisu and was planning on ordering it. But then we waited and waited and waited some more and she said, "Just get the check. I want out of this place." I agreed. We left a miserable tip for the miserable experience and will NEVER return. read more

For such a beautiful restaurant it's a shame that it's run so poorly. A group of 5 of us dined on the patio on a Friday night. In short: the management is very disrespectful and the service is extremely slow. The food and the servers are good, but don't waste your time here unless there's new ownership in the future. We had 7pm reservations and arrived promptly at 7. We decided on a few appetizers to start with, but were told by our server that because they were so busy we had to put all our food in at once for the kitchen to handle it. Slightly annoying and it defeats the purpose of tapas style, but whatever... we then decided on our main courses and ordered everything at once. As we were in the middle of placing these orders with our server, the owner came and pulled our server away to scold him about some credit card issue from customers at another table. So incredibly rude!! He couldn't wait 30 more seconds for the server to finish taking our orders? While we waited for our food, we proceeded to watch the owner repeatedly disrespect his servers. There was a lot of finger pointing and telling everyone else what to do rather than ever stepping in and helping himself. Not once did we ever see him pick up a plate or rag to wipe a table. (Although his wife was). Because of this, it was very clear to see that it was negatively impacting the servers who were extremely stressed under all the pressure. We had plenty of time to observe because we waited for our food for OVER TWO HOURS. Three of our five dishes arrived at 9:06pm, and one of them was lukewarm. The second two dishes didn't come until 9:13pm!! Right before leaving, the owner came over to our table to "apologize." Unsurprisingly, there was absolutely nothing offered to us in reconciliation. Not only that, but instead of just apologizing, he proceeded to make excuses to try and justify the severe delay by saying that a server didn't show up so he pulled one of their cooks to serve. How does that do anything but make the situation worse? The servers were excellent and working very hard and the food was good. But they are severely understaffed. The servers should not be the only ones cleaning the tables in a place like this, especially on a busy Friday night. My sister and her husband are local and have dined here before without noticing any major issues, but those were on slower nights so I think part of the issue is that they cannot handle being at capacity. But it seems like we saw the "true colors" of Tempranillo on this night. If you're dining in Basalt, spend your money elsewhere. read more

We live about half time in Woody Creek, and during the busiest season, Aspen is usually a pain due to traffic and parking is often nonexistent. As a result we prefer to come down valley. Tempranillo is the best restaurant in Basalt consistently. Great food, great service, and great wine at reasonable prices (especially compared to the 4x markups you get in Aspen). After an expensive bad meal in Aspen, it was time for us to try something different. With a little help from Yelp, we decided to try Tempranillo in Basalt specializing in both Italian food and Spanish tapas. They had both indoor seating and outdoor seating on their front garden/patio. It was perfect! I have always wanted to try tapas, my wife likes Italian food, and the child likes any place with a child's menu or child's portions. I ordered their calamari diablo, and a sampling of their Spanish sausages. My wife ordered their Linguine Fruitte di mare, and the child ordered the Rigatoni Bolognese. The Calamari diablo was calamari cooked in a spicy tomato sauce. The flavor was good. Everyone liked it. The sampling of sausages was different from what I thought it would be. It consisted of cut up Chorizo, Chistorra and Butiforra sausage, cooked in a tomato sauce. I thought it was okay, but I like my sausages whole. I would order something else if I had another opportunity to come here. The Fruitte di mare was almost perfection. The flavor of the sauce was spot on. It had plenty of seafood in it. My wife's only complaint was that there was not enough linguine. The Rigatoni Bolognese was also another great pasta dish. Their Bolognese was really a "pink" sauce with a little bit of cream mixed in. It was so good, that the daughter did not want to share it with me. Service was good. Our server kept our glasses filled, and checked up on us. She was new, so she didn't know what the specials were. But, she did a good job. Tempranillo gave us a good introduction to the town of Basalt, a town that I have never heard of, or had any intentions of visiting. They gave us a great meal and a great experience. Such an enticing restaurant on the surface. I was rather underwhelmed by the food, however. The menu looks as if it is rarely updated (hard laminate), and the tapas that we ordered were mediocre at best- canned artichokes, unimaginative salads, boxed pastas. For the price, I was expecting more. Also, we ate here in mid-July, and the tables were definitely NOT spaced appropriately for the COVID era. Oh, and while I loved that they had a play structure for kids, for the love of god OIL YOUR SWINGS once in a while so I am not tortured by constant squeaking for twenty minutes while I'm trying to enjoy conversation. My two star rating is for a decent wine list and a friendly, accommodating server. read more
