Happened to walk by the store and saw the sign for tieguanyin soft serve and tea flavored ice cream is really my soft spot so ofcourse I had to get one to try. I walked in on a Sunday around 5pm and it was empty. $8 for a soft serve is quite pricey but you can get 20% off if you order a drink. The soft serve itself was smooth and had a nice tieguanyin flavor, but a tad on the sweet side and I would've like it if the flavor was a little more intense. The portion is generous as it should because it's $8! I used my spoon to eat it and there were ice cream completely filled from top to bottom. Overall, it's not a must get item whenever I'm in the area given the price but it's a nice treat every once in awhile. read more

I haven't visited Ten Ren's in a long time, but today I wanted to stop by to buy some loose leaf tea and try their bubble tea menu. This visit I wanted to buy some loose leaf jasmine tea and from what I saw online I knew that the shop had a few different grades in stock besides the jasmine pearl. As soon as I walked in, I got to sample tea brewed with the jasmine pearl leaves (the smell was very fragrant). I only wanted to buy a small quantity to test it out but the saleslady kept on trying to upsell me to buy a whole tin which costs almost $40. She also let me smell the tea leaves before trying to upsell me to buy a whole tin again. After telling her I was only interested in buying a small amount, she went to the front where they keep the giant golden tea tins and scooped out 4oz for me. As soon as I was finished paying, it felt like a transaction and she no longer had any reason to assist me like not even a thank you or anything. A very dismissive attitude simply because I didn't give in buying a whole tin of tea like she suggested. There are plenty of other tea shops in Chinatown so I probably won't be visiting here again. In the front, I ordered their jasmine green tea with no toppings and 50% sugar which was a mistake. This drink definitely needs 100% sugar because at 50% it tasted like jasmine tea with a bit of milk added to it (save your money and go down the street to Molly Tea instead). Prices on the menu are before tax and toppings cost extra FYI. read more

TenRens been closing in LA Socal, so its nice to see a Ten Ren still exist in NY. They are known for selling tea leafs. When you enter the shop, you will smell the tea. It is located in the center of Chinatown, there isn't parking around as it is in the middle of NY. However we tried this place once but the tea was slightly too sweet in my honest opinion. The guy tried diluting it twice, but really I wish he would've just fixed the drink instead. I got an oolong milk tea to go and the taste is good but I wished the tea flavor was stronger since the milk has diluted it. We love boba. It's delicious, and it's refreshing. Since we visited during a heat wave, we knew it would hit the spot for us. In the week that we visited NYC this time, we went to Ten Ren's Tea shop at least 5 times. Each time, we purchased boba and some tea (loose leaf or bagged, depending on the variety) to take home with us. But we noticed that, each time, our drinks became more and more expensive, even though we placed the same order - and inside of the same week. This suggests to me that they started overcharging us at home point, and it was pretty annoying. Additionally, the last time we purchased tea, a lady in her 60s or so charged me $.50 for a bag, although she had not charged me for a bag on our other visits (during which we had also purchased the same 3 boba and at least 2 or 3 packages of tea to take home). It struck me as insanely stingy to charge a customer for a bag when they're buying $20 in boba and $36 worth of loose leaf or bagged tea in addition. I am only giving 2 stars because my boyfriend liked his Lychee Slushie with normal sweetness. I otherwise would give 1 star. I tried to order Matcha and should have known better after the lady at the register thought I was trying to order a Matcha Slush or Matcha Milk Tea. I asked multiple times for just straight matcha but she did not understand me. My boyfriend asked if they could make me Matcha instead, and they said okay. While they were making it, I was devastated to see them take out a sad, lifeless, ugly green powder and scoop it into the blender. This was followed by condensed milk. My heart stopped. I knew I made a huge mistake. When he handed me my drink he called it Jade Tea.... Why. I tried to stay positive as I took the first sip. It felt like a sandstorm in my mouth. You might as well get matcha from starbucks based on what they are providing. But really, there are so many better matcha and tea places in the area and the city. Go to San Chen instead. I wanted some boba and was passing by this place to get to Big Wong's so I went in. I know this is a big Taiwanese brand so I knew I was in good hands bcs the Taiwanese ppl have perfected the boba recipe. There were 3 ppl part of the same group in front of me and they were tourist. The cashier was nice and helped them patiently with their questions. Finally like 5 minutes later, it was my turn. I asked if they had fresh taro and he said yes! Alright! I love fresh taro drinks. So I got a small taro mil tea with boba, cold. He said hot was better but I was actually quite hot and needed something cold to cool down. Then I asked about the crispy chicken on the menu and he said that they actually only serve the tea eggs. Well I can make tea eggs at home and they are quite tasty, so I passed. They only accept credit card if the order is over $10 and mine wasn't so I had to dig for some cash in my bag. The drink took quite a while to make as there was only 1 drink maker. When my drink finally was ready, it wasn't what I expected. I had some really great taro with boba from Shake Shack (another Taiwanese brand situated in Hawaii) and this was nothing in comparison. It was lukewarm first of all and it was quite foamy bcs they had blended it. No ice, no slush... not cold. I had to ask for a cup of ice. The cup was also quite flimsy, it felt like I was going to break it at any moment. The taste was ok. The boba was a bit overcooked, it was hella slimy and fuzzy (if that makes any sense) on the outside and not that firm texture. To be truthful, I actually got a little stomachache after drinking it. So I didn't get pass 2 sips. 3 stars bcs I have had their other teas in the past and they are quite lovely. I think next time I'll stick to the red bean slush. read more
