Every time I visit, I always try to order something different. My favorite is their steak salad. Their lemonade is really good and refreshing too! This tender greens is OK. I've been here a few times and it seems its a hit or a miss. Keep in mind when you order steak, you are getting exactly a $12 steak. It's not going to be good. It's a cafeteria (lemonade-esque) style where you walk up, order, pick up your food and pay up. I've ordered the steak hot plate twice and once the steak was SO tough and gross it was nearly inedible. The second time was ok. Their mashed potatoes taste like something out of a box and their salad is seriously average. They burn the piece of toast frequently as well. Out of impulse I ordered a glass of wine once and for $7 ish it was pretty bad, like worst than 2 buck chuck. Never order the red here. Overall, it's like a mcdonalds where you can expect consistency except it's almost $12 and trendier. I'll eat here if a friend demands it, but wouldn't really come here on my own. I'm sitting here in this lovely and crowded shop enjoying perhaps my 20th or maybe 30th hot plate meal here. The difference this time (buttermilk fried chicken) is that I forgot my wallet. The lovely staff here told me to enjoy my meal anyway even after I asked if I could possibly get a receipt for what this would have been so I can come back later and pay. The food is delicious with good ingredients and simple cooking without too much flash and bang and the salads are superb. The prices are a bit steep ($11.50) for what you get, but the quality of the food is pretty solid. I ordered the herbed / seared albacore over a kale salad, the steak over a spinach salad and a steak sandwich with an order of mashed potatoes. The salads were good, although the spinach salad could have used a stronger sauce and more of it (since I ordered this to-go). The proteins were fantastic and were good quality, so definitely worth it if you're looking for quality over quantity. The steak sandwich cost the same as the salads but was the heartiest. Love it! I'm a pretty healthy eater for the most part and I usually go to Whole Foods to pick up healthier fast foods when I'm pressed for time or too lazy to cook. Tender Greens is the perfect, if not better, alternative to Whole Foods salad/hot foods bar. Their salad greens are so fresh and so clean tasting that I wouldn't mind just eating greens and a bit of salt. I also had their albacore, which was perfectly seared and topped with a bit of, I believe, chimichurri sauce. My boyfriend had the uni pasta special and that was only OK. The pasta tasted like homemade pasta, but the uni didn't taste all that great. I can't really put my finger on it, but I think the way they cooked the uni killed the natural sweetness of uni. Good try, though. For those who like more indulgent meals, they also have your heartier fares such as steak, fried chicken, mashed potates, french fries, mac & cheese, etc. I really love this place for its freshness and higher quality ingredients in a casual, relaxed, cafeteria-style setting. read more

This is a great concept, offering quick healthy meals in the same style as chipotle where you pick and choose the items you want. The only issue I have is that the pricing is way too high, they are charging too much in comparison to the portion size. Veggie Grill is a similar style restaurant, but the pricing is way more reasonable and offers great combos. Tender Greens would do well to take note from Veggie Grills model and adjust their menu to reflect similar pricing. Well, after eating here seven times in the past few weeks I guess I am a regular. I have to say that this place satisfies all of my veggie needs. Whenever I have a bit of guilt from indulging in mexican food or fried rice, I always come here to make myself feel better. While I am not a vegetarian, many of my friends are, and Tender Greens has something for everyone! Lots of wonderful salad combinations and grilled steak for the meat-eaters. Since I am gluten free there is always something for me to eat without worry. Salads are the main fare but they have amazing mashed potatoes, seared tuna, grilled chicken, and different grilled veggies every night. The food here is simply fantastic. Everything tastes so fresh and delicious. I ordered the Mediterranean salad with fried chicken. The chicken was moist and the texture of the breading was spot on. The grilled bread served on the side of their salads is a nice accompaniment to the salad. It fills the "bread void" many non-vegetarians want in a salad meal. The ingredients were all fresh and the service was fast. The assembly line system at work in this restaurant really makes the line progress smoothly during the lunch rush. The best thing to happen to healthy eating! $10.50 for a hot plate. What I normally get is seared albacore with the tender greens salad and substitute the mashed potatoes for the grilled veggies (no extra charge). I have tried their steak and am happy with that as well. Their grilled veggies, which consist of cauliflower, eggplant, squash, corn, and green beans, are incredibly good. I am a huge, huge fun of their tuna and steak as well. The mashed potatoes can be a bit dry for some people as it does not come with gravy. The tender greens salad is delicious. One thing I wish I could change is their crostini. It's just way too hard, and it'd be better if they could just replace that with a softer slice of bread. Service is great. They have people walking by and asking you if you need them to take away your tray or plates. Don't come here expecting to get stuffed. This isn't a buffet. But for a tasty, healthy meal, this is the place to go. read more

I almost always get the marinated steak ... set with the Yukon potatoes and some salad I'm in the mood for. Head on to the counter, tell 'em what you want and walk down the little assembly line while they make your fresh food. My first time to a Tender Greens and I have to say I enjoyed the experience very much. First of all this location on Colorado in Pasadena was near both Parking and the Pasadena Civic. It was busy but not overly crowded and we were able to get a table very quickly. The food is served fast casual, where you order and then walk down the line as your order is prepared. I haas the Grilled Chicken Cobb and it was delicious. Instead of the typical chopped dry chicken breast, Tender Greens uses real chicken chopped up including the much juicier dark meat. It was a great salad. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 star is that it was bit expensive for a chicken salad and a beer, and the beer was not too good. It was a wheat beer that tasted way too hoppy... That being said, I would eat there again. read more

I've been hearing about this place so it's about time I try it. Unlike the typical salad places where it's either a salad or wrap - menu or customized, you can get: 1. Menu Salad 2. Grill item on sandwich plus a simple salad selection 3. Grill item on simple salad selection 4. Grill Item with yukon mashed plus a simple salad selection I decided on the Tuna Nicoise which is one of the salads on their menu. It comes with seared tuna, mixed greens, tomatoes, green beans, quail egg, potatoes and capers with sherry vinaigrette dressing. The salad was fresh and crispy and very delightful to eat. The tuna was very well seasoned and fresh. It comes with 3 pieces which doesn't seem a lot but they are pretty thick slices and you will be satisfied. The dressing is light with just the right touch of flavor. It's not overpowering. I also got a side of their mac and cheese which was a bit lacking in flavor but it was very healthy tasting and light. It wasn't all greasy and heavy. It could have used some salt but I decided against because it would defeat the purpose. Next time I would get the hot plate. I think it's the most well rounded selection and I probably should have gotten that to begin with. read more

I'm obsessed with TG's! Their salads and protein choices are delicious! The simple spinach salad with chicken is my favorite. A bit pricey, but I'm happy to pay that for fresh healthy food in a pristine clean establishment with helpful employees. Plus the fresh watermelon juice is a plus. Yum. A good spot for a quick lunch but certainly not a destination worthy of a special trip. The place has a cafeteria feel to it as you order your meal at the first register and then work your way down the "line". Gives it a "Subway" feel except your make all your choices at the first register and then, for some reason, walk down and wait in line to pay at a second register. Meanwhile, everyone is scrambling to get a table at this very busy spot. No need to be polite. First come first serve. The Pasadena soccer mom will have no hesitation saving a seat before they order so go for it. The kale salad and potatoes are excellent. Good selection of proteins from fish to chicken. Not sure what happened with this place, but it has totally changed in the last few months. I went in the other day in the afternoon. Place was pretty empty yet the tables were filthy. Employees sitting on their break eating lunch with the customers. AC was barely working. An employee said they had no control over it. Umm. Ok. I get the same thing every single time I'm in here. Albacore Salad. My portion was half the size I normally receive. This salad is Albacore and lettuce. That's it. So I paid a ton for a few tiny slices of Albacore. Was given a glass of water with something floating in it. Lady behind the counter went into the kitchen to get me a new glass. They usually get this from the front. So no I will not be drinking that water. Point of the story -- overpriced with small portion, and dirty tables. I thought the staff was nice, but will not be returning to this location. read more

This review is for this location, as opposed to tender greens as a whole. I absolutely love tender greens! This location, however, routinely underwhelms me. It's OK in a pinch, but almost every time I get a salad here, at least one or two items are left out of it and I have to go and ask for them (they are never out of the items, they are just forgotten). Tender Greens is obviously a "concept" chain developed to capture your "greens" and make you feel good that you are getting assembly line food that is sort of "haute" something. I have attempted to reach the management of this company to complain but the labyrinth of shell companies and lack of even a customer service person makes me sure they want continue to rake in green without our input, When a chain such as this makes your input unwelcome it says it all. Last night I ate at the Pasadena location and they were out of bread and out of straws. The staff told me they had cut the evening crew and that is why everyone had to wait . Tender greens could refer to this firm's sensitivity in raking in the cash without caring about the customer . Food is honestly not the greatest. For the price they ask for the amount served is pitiful and easily costs less than $10, so $11.50 for an airy salad and thinly sliced steak is a meh. Chicken is tough and dry, the flavor is obviously missing. Service was disappointing as well. My baby spinach salad came without goat cheese and hazelnuts (an understandable mistake as I had asked for no dressing) but when I returned to ask if I could get it fixed, there was no apology, no smile, just a curt "okay." Perfect for two health conscious girls, I had the herb ahi tuna with Caesar romaine salad, and she had a grilled veggie sandwich with arugula. Everything tasted delightful.. My tuna kind of lacked taste though, but the fact that this meal was quite light, fresh, and satisfying-- makes up for it. Tender greens, tender meats, what's not to love about this place?! The price may be higher than a normal salad/sandwich plate, but you definitely get what you pay for!! Freshness is absolutely the most important part of any meal, and Tender Greens delivers! If you're not a salad fan, there's also fish and delicious sandwiches with legit steak! They seriously have some of the best meats I've had in sandwiches. I tried the steak sandwich, and they give you quite a bit of meat. It's cooked to a perfect medium rare, and the sandwiches come with a side of salad too. I've also had their harvest salad, which was a special, with figs, pears, candied pecans, goat cheese but we subbed with blue cheese, and a vinaigrette. The salad was amazing, and until I learn how to make all the ingredients, I will gladly pay $10.50 for a salad over and over again. Their mint lemonade is really refreshing, lots of mint bits in the drink. It's the very sour type, so be prepared! Overall, this is one of my favorite places to go to whether you're catching up with a friend or grabbing a quick meal. I don't really think of this place as a healthy place because the food is just good, and when food is good, I'm going to keep eating even if it's not the best thing for you. One time I got a soup, sandwich, and dessert AND devoured everything; I felt like I just inhaled five big macs I was so full, but I definitely didn't feel like I just had a salad for dinner. My point is this is just a great restaurant, and if you truly want to be healthy then just don't eat so much. Also, they need to Starbucks-ize this place and build one everywhere. Having this place only a city over made moving out of West LA so much more bearable. And now there's an Urth Caffe across the street! It's like I never left. There's always street parking to be found within a 2-block radius of the place, so it's never a concern for visiting. The salads and hot plates are just as delicious as you've come to expect from Tender Greens. My personal favorites are still the Chipotle Chicken Salad or a Hot Plate with Seared Albacore Tuna. This is one of my favorite lunch places to eat. I always get the salt and pepper chicken on a hot plate with baby spinach salad. The hot plate including mashed potatoes that are to die for. They are Yukon potatoes that are smooth and creamy. The spinach salad is my favorite because they have goat cheese and hazelnuts that got really well with the spinach. My favorite part is the salt and pepper chicken its always juicy and nicely salted. The skin is actually the best part since it taste great with the chicken. One drink you have to try is their mint lemonade, its refreshing and has a nice zing to it. Had the Fried Chicken Salad and the chicken was amazing. Wish I could just order the chicken on its own. It's better than most "Fried Chicken" places. It was moist, crispy and sooo flavorful. I give the chicken 5 stars. The portions were on the small side for what you pay but I guess everything is "organic." So it gets 3 stars. The woman who took my order was horrible!! She didn't give me a number so when I sat down the bus boy came by to ask if I needed anything else. I was like "what??" Then he told me I should have gotten a number after I placed my order. I go back to the girl who took the order and asked for it and she says to me, "they should have given it to you." Uh, hello! It was you who took my order and didn't give me my number. Then later on she did something wacky as well. She came by to bring over a dish and we had asked for an extra plate or something and then she didn't come back with it until much later when we already got it from the busboy and then she got confused. What a great concept! What a colossal failure of execution! Yesterday (Sunday lunch). I ordered the potato-leek soup and the Thai shrimp salad. Husband had the Tuna verdura sandwich and the special "caramelized onion" potato side dish. We shared a huge chocolate cookie with toffee. I left hungry and will not go back. The shrimp was ice cold and cooked to the point of rubber. There was virtually nothing in the large salad but one kind of lettuce (tons of that) and some sliced green onion. The dressing was shiny orange acidic and vile. If you hadn't told me that the soup was potato, I could not have ventured even a guess as to its ingredients. It was thick, grainy, and utterly flavorless. Husband ate his tuna sandwich and said it was well-seasoned. He liked the ciabatta roll it came on. But the potato side dish was pushed away after a single bite. There were no "caramelized" onions. Instead, the potatoes were served refrigerator-cold and covered in an orange sticky sauce. Ick! The cookie was inedible. Just a little softer than a backyard brick and so chewy you could have kept a single bite going for hours. Those needed to come out of the oven a loooong time sooner than anyone remembered. We were so enthusiastic when we walked in. The place is clean and spacious, with a sweet little patio, and the service-model is fast and efficient. The wait and serving staff were responsive and helpful -- great attitudes.
