The inside is clean, welcoming and beautiful decorated. It's clearly family owned with love. Our waiter kept asking personal questions like what we had for breakfast which was endearing and kind, like he has been coached on making small talk. I first visited in early 1980s, and it was the rock n roll sushi spot across from the Roxy and Rainbow on Sunset Blvd. I was a regular and always impressed how kind yet serious the family was in running their family business. It was a dark and not so stormy night - this place is across from the Roxy and just west-ish of the Whiskey and The Viper Room. Thursday night was very quiet at 8pm. Staff was relaxed. The food was good, but sushi was unavailable. There were signs regarding curry plates, but we had teriyaki chicken and that was good. Went in today with my boyfriend around 2pm for lunch special. No greeting. Self sat. Waiter dropped menus off. Didn't tell us about any of the specials. Really not friendly service. Ended up just putting an order in for chicken curry, teriyaki, pot stickers, lemonade, waters. The food tasted like it'd been sitting around for a day or maybe day old food. Chicken was rubbery. Overall quality pretty low despite this place getting 4 stars. Also, service was non existent and we never got refills on water or our lemonade that we ordered. This is an LA staple it is still family owned. They've been there for years. Their sushi is the freshest cleanest sushi I've ever had. If you want to try some thing that's fire. Try their jalapeño roll or their soft shell crab roll. Also, their sushi salad is to die for the dressing is made fresh there. Everything is fresh and made to order. I would not miss this. I used to be a regular at Tenmasa when I worked on the block. I did not eat there for a decade and kept wondering how it was doing and whether it was still as good as I had remembered (places rarely are). Tenmasa still has the most amazing Miso Soup, made lovingly by the woman who owns the restaurant. It is truly the best Miso Soup I have ever had! She works on the Miso for many years and that sort of dedication to quality food is hard to find outside of Michelin Starred Restaurants! Her son still waits on tables and together they provide the sort of "family dinner feeling" that makes eating at Tenmasa truly a lovely experience. There are other sushi places with higher end fish and more elegant dishes. There is no place I have ever been with better Miso Soup and authentic family-style service. Their cooked dishes are also excellent and worth trying in addition to the raw fish. All-in-all, a wonderful place for lunch or dinner (and ... to make this an even better bet ... they have a free private parking lot just to the East of the building, next to the large 9000 building!). read more

My company just moved into an office building nearby, and Tenmasa popped up when I looked up lunch options in the area. I saw that they had lunch specials so walked on down to check it out. The restaurant itself is clean, and well-appointed, and service was quick and friendly. The food was solid, but I was so disappointed that they had removed all of the sushi-related lunch specials, and are only offering heavier comfort food for lunch menus now. I really wish they would bring back the roll + salad combo - I would be here all the time! If it were a cost issue, a $1-2 upcharge would totally make sense given how reasonable prices are as a baseline. Quality in general was solid, just wish they had specials that might appeal to more health-conscious lighter eaters, especially with Summer coming up. read more

Hidden little gem. Outside looks very nondescript but once you step in the restaurant the layout looks completely different. The atmosphere was very calm and peaceful and I was greeted by Mrs. T herself who took my order in a very quick manner. She crafted the rolls for me personally. The food was legit as the rice and the fish was extremely fresh. Note she is very authentically japanese and all in all my experience was great. Can't wait to visit once more. What an awesome delight. Tried this place a couple of week ago and so good i had to find an excuse to see a friend who lives down the street from here :). Food is fresh and simple (in the best way) that each bite really had me enjoying the full taste. I ordered scallops and yellow tail sushi, gobo (root) in olive oil, and soft shell crabs- I had a mix of things! I wish the menu said what is the 911 and Papasan roll tho. The menu is a little skinny for the sushi but it's understandable with the pandemic. I deeply appreciate that the menu offers comfort Japanese food too like curry, udon and soba! I also can't wait to come back when indoor dining is back. The place looks super cute and from prior photos I think the chef can make more than what's on the menu right now. read more

First time for lunch and a totally different scene. The lunch crowd all had on orange and neon green vests from a local construction site... because there is always construction going on! Discovering Tenmasa is still up and running with efficient service and a well priced lunch was a treat. Always start with the Miso soup, then followed by the spicy salmon roll salad, the dressing was light, the ginger on the side was delicious! My friend had the teriyaki chicken special... only demerit was being served in styrofoam. that didn't really make sense... my lunch arrived on a glass plate... so aesthetically and environmentally not pleasing.
